8563 – What *is* the melting point of a gorilla’s head?

Yarrr! It be Talk like a pirate day and Adam West’s 78th B’day!

First Columbo movie was fun…the M.O. of letting the bad guy be lulled into a false sense of security by a bumbler is a solid one. The writing has held up, and the acting is a lot better than other shows of the period. Nice use of Double Indemnity on TV as a story within a story.

Wow… the menstrualhut has over 2250 members now. When I first started it, I had no idea it’d still be growing and active five years later, pretty much on its own. I’m going to have to swing by the Museum of Menstruation when I’m in Maryland. His site is a goodly part of why the hut got rolling in the first place.

Washington D.C. (AHN) – A heap of debris taken from quarry trash in Mexico has yielded a stone block inscribed with what researchers believe is the oldest writing ever found in the New World. Researchers say the serpentine block dates back almost 3,000 years and was created by people from Olmec civilization.

8561 – Fart Knocker. Heh.

Went to the Seminole Casino on Coconut Creek as a mini-walkabout. I dropped a few bucks, trying slots, and I *really* don’t get it. I totally felt like a monkey pushing a bar to get a banana pellet…. the only trouble was, I had to feed the machine banana pellets to make it work. Poorly.

Not really on a par with the hard rock, but interesting to see the variety of machines and people doing the pushbutton thing. Retirees, doctor-types in scrubs, people smoking and eating chili dogs, all poking that spin button over and over again, putting in bills of all denominations, or the really hardcore just using some special sort of debit card.

I’ll just keep my banana pellets to myself, and cut out the pellet-stealing machine, thank you very much. My Fave machine to look at was was “Blues Brothers” themed… most were branded in some way, Wheel of Fortune, Monopoly, and Tobasco Hot Pepper sauce all had slot machines.

Poker was upstairs, and doubly smoky… I couldn’t find the high-speed bingo anywhere.

Odd that the Seminole Flag is very similar to the German Flag, but with a white bar on top. I guess there are only so many color combinations you can hit with stripes, before you have some replication going on.

Slept soundly last night, with odd dreams of being underwater.. maybe because the road trip in October might include the Georgia Aquarium, now? It’s so big that they have flippin’ whale sharks! Maybe I won’t have to wait until my last day on earth to visit a chunk of the great barrier reef, after all? A little scary… I saw Jaws 3-D, after all.

Reclusive German, reading reclusively in his grotto? Sounds right.

No, I don’t agree with that. Though it can be a solution at times, when finesse isn’t available.

So ya want a Jedi Name young padawan?
Here’s How:

For the first part of the name take the first 3 letters of your last name and merge it with the first 2 letters of your first name. For the last name, take the first two letters of your mother’s maiden name and merge it with the first 3 letters of your hometown.

Here’s mine – vongr Rabro

(I suppose it could also technically be Bersc, Berpr, Bergr, vonsc, or vonpr due to my first name not really being my used name, and last name being all krauty and such)

I had no small amount of difficulty getting solid sleep yesterday morning – I had four different instances of being awakened just as I hit that deep, solid sleep phase… four jangled wide awakes while really snoozed out. Fortunately, I got a couple really solid ones last night, and a little naptime today will set me right!

I’m becoming a costumed crimefighter — what should I have on my utility belt? – comments section pretty handy!

I’m glad they’ve given Greg Behrendt his own show… I hope he’s successful. I’ve never met the guy, but I’ve enjoyed just about everything I’ve ever heard him say.

Other recent addition to my synch (both itunes and psp)- refrederator – daily video podcast of vintage cartoons (Dover Boys [7/14/2006 – download] is an all time fave of mine)

“Unhand her, Dan Backslide! Unhand her, Dan Backslide! Unhand her, Dan Backslide!… (Say, we’re getting in a rut)… Stand up and fight, you coward, bully, cad, and thief!”

It seems someone bead me to the syndication of the site… a typo in the name, but that’s ok by me – refederator, but it looks like itunes is a lot more reliable than lj’s dodgy rss grabber.

8559 – Sucking on an applehead at 4am

So much for getting a good night’s sleep… Sometime after 8:15pm, my tech’s phone stopped working. I got my first wake-up missing kid page at 12:15am, and then this latest one out of Sarasota at 4am. I’ve got to launch an expansion at 6, so it seems that a solid 7-8 hours straight is going to be impossible until after Fatima leaves at about 11ish. Maybe I’ll try to nap on the porch while she’s working cleanup. Upside – Taking call Friday night will pay for the cleaning service on Saturday. If ECN doesn’t contact me, I’ll get the funds for working Saturday, too… but I’d rather have the day free to do my walkies or sleepies or whatever in peace.

I sort of fell asleep on autopilot… I somehow managed to take my meds, but neglected to put on my cpap before bed – sort of a poor move, because my throat is a little snore-sore now.

Re-watched Charley Varrick while doing my Friday night putter. Fun flick, and probably one of Walter Matthau’s best non-comedic roles. I like a good caper flick… I’m looking forward to showing it to my sweetie over a big bowl of popcorn on a rainy day sometime soon. On the dvd now is Key Largo. Funny How different Florida looks in the old movies… Men in shirtsleeves and ties, and baking for it, because there’s no A/C and nothing but palm fronds and gin joints… the docks look like something out of a popeye cartoon.

Morningstar vegetarian corn dogs are a *billion* times better tasting when heated in the toaster oven at 350f for 20 minutes, rather than super-nuke in the microwave for six minutes. Absolutely worth the additional 14 minute investment. (plus, you can heat a vegetable or soup in the micro while you wait, to round out the meal)

I’ve subscribed to Matt Kindt’s online strip, Superspy. It’s sort of fun to turn on the PSP and have a fresh bit of art on it to peruse.

8554 – Repeat after me: I am not a pleasure unit.

Yesterday was a long one at work, but I had a plethora of goodies once I made it to the grotto proper. A very handy copy of the Washington Post, a wonderful card, two lovely magnets and an assortment of my favorite candies. (Including a Skybar and Caramel Creams!!)

Kind of neat… Triple-O Eight in Our Man Flint was played by Landon from Planet of the Apes.I didn’t recognize him until this most recent viewing.

Sex Baiting Prank on Craigslist Affects Hundreds – waxy posts a very thorough article on the recent lj/craigslist drama. How’d I not catch this on Monday?

On Monday, a Seattle web developer named Jason Fortuny started his own Craigslist experiment. The goal: “Posing as submissive woman looking for an aggressive dom, how many responses can we get in 24 hours?”

He took the text and photo from a sexually explicit ad (warning: not safe for work) in another area, reposted it to Craigslist Seattle, and waited for the responses to roll in. Like Simon’s experiment, the response was immediate. He wrote, “178 responses, with 145 photos of men in various states of undress. Responses include full e-mail addresses (both personal and business addresses), names, and in some cases IM screennames and telephone numbers.”

In a staggering move, he then published every single response, unedited and uncensored, with all photos and personal information to Encyclopedia Dramatica (kinda like Wikipedia for web fads and Internet drama). Read the responses (warning: sexually explicit material).

Instantly, commenters on the LiveJournal thread started identifying the men. Dissenters emailed the guys to let them know they were scammed. Several of them were married, which has led to what will likely be the first of many separations. One couplein an open marriage begged that their information be removed, as their religious family and friends weren’t aware of their lifestyle. Another spotted a fellow Microsoft employee, based on their e-mail address. And it’s really just the beginning, since the major search engines haven’t indexed these pages yet. After that, who knows? Divorces, firings, lawsuits, and the assorted hell that come from having your personal sex life listed as the first search result for your name.

Is this guy just a jerk, or suicidally stupid? I can’t imagine hundreds of angry local men won’t have at least a few violent thugs amongst ’em… Or at least someone that knows a good lawyer?

Also… why is it so much easier to become famous (infamous?) for being a creep than a good guy?

Is this true?

If you have to introduce a second cat into your house, your first kitty cat may have trouble getting used to the new intruder. If you put a little perfume on both cats, so that they will smell the same as each other, they will trust each other more.

Crazy busy activity outside on the way to the bus this morning. Folks inside stores, renovating, and the parking lots and roads seemed fairly bristling with manned vehicles.

October 25, 2006 – 2pm. Going to be good.

vade mecum: a book or other thing that one regularly carries about. (Vade mecum is from Latin, literally meaning “go with me.”)

Hm.. outside of essentials, like money, bus pass and keys, I always carry my little tokens (whisker, monkey bead), PDA and digicam (in a utility pouch on my belt).

I wonder what other stuff folks carry daily… do people do rabbit’s feet anymore? Pocket dictionaries? Penknives?

Strange activity on my Myspace page –

Sorry for the inconvenience. 9/12/2006

“Special Maintenance?” What does that mean?

I really only use the page to keep tabs on a few buddies that can’t be bothered to do anything in lj. (or supplement lj with other stuff there) I have a lot of buddies that have multiple journals, and it’s sort of odd to me… I can hardly stay on top of this one, these days. Some folk have a type pad and a vox and a GJ an LJ a DJ and whatever other “J’s” there are… I don’t seem visit many sites hosted by blogger anymore. I wonder why that is?

I’m just glad that I have a “blogroll” that I can click up and down, and see who’s updated what, and when.

Also caught the first House of Season 1 – interesting character adjustment, but I don’t think it’ll last for very long.

Lovely, giggly day yesterday. Tracheotomy Pooh-bear and stories of “Sleeping Booty” made it dash by.

Michael Jantzen’s Wind Pavilion is a nice facelift to the rotating apartments concept that debuted in Curitib, Brazil back in 2004. This particular version of the wind pavilion is proposed to be a lightweight structure primarily made of fabric to randomly rotate in the wind. Rotation would not only provide the building with an ever changing shape, but also electrical power to light the building. Michael proposes that the building could be made out of various materials and could take on many different functions such as an apartment complex.

After watching the first season of the Shield… weird that they didn’t work with Vic getting shot much past the episode where it happened. they seem to get on top of most details like that interlocking.. he sort of just healed up and moved on.

Light-Emitting Shirts from Philips – very keen… I could see this as being quite entertaining, with the right applications. combine this with some sort of transponder of gps technology, and your clothes or nearby furniture/curtains could give information like arrows directing you to a certain location, or color-coded type reference tabs for people… It’d be kind of neat to have a glowing digital clock or scrolling message/logo on a t-shirt, too. Maybe link it up to wifi and rss to read updated journals each refresh? Pretty handy for cycling at night, too… complete with illuminated turn signals or goodyear blimp type ads, probably.

On the Effectiveness of Aluminum Foil Helmets: An Empirical Study

Conclusion – The helmets amplify frequency bands that coincide with those allocated to the US government between 1.2 Ghz and 1.4 Ghz. According to the FCC, These bands are supposedly reserved for ”radio location” (ie,GPS), and other communications with satellites (see, for example,[3]). The2.6 Ghz band coincides with mobile phone technology. Though not affiliated by government, these bands are at the hands of multinational corporations.

It requires no stretch of the imagination to conclude that the current helmet craze is likely to have been propagated by the Government, possibly with the involvement of the FCC. We hope this report will encourage the paranoid community to develop improved helmet designs to avoid falling prey to these shortcomings.

The Momster was pretty dang hep to the plans for October… she’s going to be in the region and will be able to come. I’ll be interested in seeing how Linda and Wilton get along with Chris and Larry. I’m elated that everyone is enthused and happy. I still have the urge to isolate some folks from others, just for sanity’s sake, but I know I love ’em all.

Testing out geotagged photos in flickr – seems to work ok.

Went to a Animal-health benefit at a comedy club in Boca last night. 2 local comics, a b-lister and an “a-lister”. Locals were cute, but too much unfunny ethnic humor that “I’m half black and half Korean… I keep robbing my own dry cleaning store”, b-lister was a lot more fun (I’ll have to look up his name again, but he did some clever bits that had a nice combination of shock value & cerebral), and the a-lister (Artie Fletcher) was just totally lame.

Note to comics – If the crowd has a big percentage of the crunchy granola / vegan / animal lovers, doing jokes about abusing your dog or Steve Irwin dying is probably a bad idea.

I’m making it sound worse than it was. I had a nice time with GG, and her buddies Heather and Lisa over a couple of baskets of fries (I had diet cokes, and they were drinking apple martini-type stuff) We got there at 8ish, expecting to be late, because the card said that they started at 7:30, but I’d say the first comic came up at about 9pm, and the whole thing ended at about 10:30.

Something a little odd – I bought raffle tickets, but didn’t win any of the critter baskets (there was a cat one that’d have been a Newton-nirvana), or any of the other loot… however a friendly person gave me a book on “Whistle blowers book of 1001 secrets: consumer news you can use” – It’s published locally – Pompano Beach, FL – copyright 1999, so who knows how accurate the stuff in it might be these days. Seems pretty entertaining.. a bunch of little one-paragraph entries on things like credit-card fraud, energy-saver light bulbs or swordfish depletion. It seems to be put together by a member of the tinfoil cap crowd, but sometimes those guys have a little signal amongst the noise.

The Go game want to paying me $75 for a 3-hour (maximum) Event in Miami on Sept 13. They’re looking for other extras, so if you want to meet me in south beach at the mall for a few hours, let me know! Here’s a flash demo what things are like in the game.

Thanks for the initial go game tip, ldy !

The only downside is that 9/13 is a Wednesday, so I’d have to miss a few hours of work to do it.
