We gotta get out of this place…

The day was hot and heavy with the weight of boxes. I packed and moved them from my office, my bedroom and closets. The sweat dripped down my face as I struggled with the load. The boxes seemed to multiply as I worked, their contents a mystery to me. I wondered what secrets they held, what memories they contained.

My in-laws and wife were there to help me with the packing and moving, which made the task a little easier. We took a break for lunch and had some delicious veggie sausages. They were savory and satisfying, the perfect fuel for the rest of the day’s work.

The sun beat down on us mercilessly as we carried on with our task. The world was a blur of heat and dust, the sky a hazy blue. I felt as though I were in a dream, a nightmare from which I could not wake.

But still we carried on, driven by some unknown force. The boxes grew heavier with each step, their weight dragging us down into the earth. And yet we could not stop, could not rest.

For there was something inside us that would not let us rest until the task was done. Something dark and terrible that whispered in our ears, urging us on. And so we carried on, through the heat and the dust and the pain.

And yet still there are boxes left to pack and move, and the house is not yet empty. But we will carry on until it is done.

Very hot day to move. 🔥🥵

Journal Entry: June 18, 2023

What a weary and dismal day it has been! I have labored and perspired under the blazing sun, in no small part due to the transfer of some articles of clothing and boxes from the house to the moving van. It was a chore of monstrous proportions, but I did not falter from my obligation. We had to abandon our efforts prematurely, for the sun was a despot that tormented us with its infernal beams. I gulped down abundant amounts of water and coated my skin with some preventive salve, but I still felt the heat sear my flesh and bones.

After that, I proceeded to the home of my father-in-law Mothman, a bizarre and enigmatic man, to commemorate the day devoted to paternal figures. He received me and my wife with affability, and we accompanied him and his consort in watching some episodes of Brokenwood Mysteries, a series of stories involving homicides and sleuths in a distant land. It was an amusement that matched his macabre and inquisitive disposition. We indulged in some snacks and beverages and conversed about the show and other subjects.

I must admit that I feel a certain appreciation for having such an odd and diverse family and friends in my existence. They fill me with a blend of delight and terror, and they support me in all my endeavors. I wonder if they realize how much I value them. On the morrow, I will rest and recuperate from the busy day.

Packed up for the day.

Me, packing up the Sacajawea logo U-Haul for our journey.

The sun was setting over the bay as our family gathered around the U-Haul truck. We had to leave ourl home and move to a new location because humans were encroaching on our territory.

The jackelope stood tall and proud, her antlers glistening in the fading light. The mermaid was busy packing boxes with her delicate hands, making sure everything was secure. The mothman and I loaded the truck with our powerful, shaggy arms.

It was a difficult task, but we worked together as a team. We were determined and persistent, even when things got tough. We didn’t need any humans to help us, we had each other.

I couldn’t help but feel grateful for my cryptid family. They were there for me when I needed them the most.

The bay was quiet, except for the sound of our truck settling after the most recent load, and the rolling door locked shut for the night. We looked out at the trees and water we were leaving behind, wondering what adventures awaited us in our new home. We will know soon enough!

The Woman in black

The Woman in Black: A Mysterious Figure in Roanoke’s History

Roanoke, Virginia is a city rich in history and ghost stories. One of the most well-known is that of the Woman in Black. In March 1902, she made several appearances in Roanoke after having been sighted on numerous occasions in Bristol. The apparition reportedly only made herself known to well-known married men as they walked home after hours.

According to legend, she appeared suddenly and unexpectedly to men who had stayed too long at their club, insisting they go home as quickly as possible. Sometimes she was said to hit, pummel, or knock a man down to the ground or slap him to the earth with a swish of her phantom garments as retribution for his sins. Her alleged appearances had the salutary effect of keeping married men home with their wives and families rather than going out each night.

There are many theories about her identity. Some think she was the wife of a man who was murdered on his way home. Others think her husband was unfaithful to her and she tries to keep the men honest. There are also those who believe she would flirt with the men to test their faithfulness. Either way, it has been thought that her intention is to keep other wives from having to go through the pain of losing their husbands like she did.

Dumb Elon strikes again.

According to a report by The Washington Post, Elon Musk overruled a significant number of Tesla engineers who warned him that switching to a visual-only system would be problematic and possibly unsafe due to its high risk². Despite their warnings, Musk was unconvinced and overruled his engineers. In May 2021, Tesla announced it was eliminating radar on new cars and soon after began disabling radar in cars already on the road³. This resulted in an uptick in crashes, near misses, and other embarrassing mistakes by Tesla vehicles suddenly deprived of a critical sensor².

Umwelt

In 1909, the biologist Jakob von Uexküll noted that every animal exists in its own unique perceptual world — a smorgasbord of sights, smells, sounds and textures that it can sense but that other species might not. These stimuli defined what von Uexküll called the Umwelt — an animal’s bespoke sliver of reality. A tick’s Umwelt is limited to the touch of hair, the odor that emanates from skin and the heat of warm blood. A human’s Umwelt is far wider but doesn’t include the electric fields that sharks and platypuses are privy to, the infrared radiation that rattlesnakes and vampire bats track or the ultraviolet light that most sighted animals can see.

The Umwelt concept is one of the most profound and beautiful in biology. It tells us that the all-encompassing nature of our subjective experience is an illusion, and that we sense just a small fraction of what there is to sense. It hints at flickers of the magnificent in the mundane, and the extraordinary in the ordinary. And it is almost antidramatic: It reveals that frogs, snakes, ticks and other animals can be doing extraordinary things even when they seem to be doing nothing at all.
