8838 – Ice and sugar is amazing stuff.

Pictures from the day. Steve the Caterpillar is missing, Lime vanilla Ice, Kitty hugs, and green leaves.

Have you seen Steve the Caterpillar?

Tuesday was pretty straightforward – work, come home, feed the birds, water the plants, have a nice dinner with BHK and the in-laws.

Things that made it a little different from other days –

Lime-vanilla ice (and a maui-wowie ice)

Re: the significance of same, see chapter 28-29 of Dandelion wine.

A brief recap for you cliff’s notes versions at home.

Chapter 28-29 (The Swan) — Bill Forrester, with Douglas at his side, orders lime-vanilla ice at the soda fountain. His unusual request catches the attention of ninety-five year old Helen Loomis who invites him to visit her house tomorrow. Bill complies, and he and Helen start a friendly conversation about the appearances people keep up for each other, that soon diverges into Loomis acting as a “Time Machine” similar to Colonel Freeleigh to transport Bill into the pyramids of Egypt . Bill comments on how comfortable he feels talking to her, and Helen replies by reminding him that she’s only an old woman. While lounging in his chair, Bill attempts to envision her as being young again; he succeeds for a moment in seeing “the swan,” which he unintentionally says out loud, strangely disquieting Helen.

Bill continues to visit Helen every day for two and a half weeks, but only on the last day does he tell her what motivated him to visit her in the first place: a photograph taken of her when she was twenty. He had seen the picture in the newspaper for the town ball and intended to go to the ball to seek the beautiful girl it showed, until someone told him that the picture had been taken a long time ago and had been used by the newspaper every year since then to advertise the ball. Helen replies with an overview of a young man she once knew in her youth who was handsome but wild and reckless; he left her, but when she saw Bill at the fountain that day, she was strongly reminded of him — almost as if he was a reincarnation of her former companion.

Some time later, Bill finds Helen writing a letter addressed to him. Helen explains to him that she will be dead in a few days, and that the letter she is writing will come to him then. When Bill attempts to protest about the lack of time they have had together, Helen says that she believes that they will meet again sometime later — possibly in reincarnated forms. She tells him to marry and live happily, but says that he has to die before the age of fifty in order to ensure that when they are reincarnated, they will be of the correct ages and be able to meet and fall in love with each other.

Two days later, Bill receives the letter. Inside it is a note reading, “A dish of lime-vanilla ice.”

I’m glad that BHK and I got our time worked out this go around.

Examples of local news – The Saltine Bandit. Much better than Broward, I think.

On 4-28, between 8:00 AM and 3:47 PM, an unknown culprit forcibly entered a residence on Coyote Ct., Lusby, and ransacked several rooms. The only thing reported stolen at this time is a box of crackers. TPR Chirichella is handling the investigation.

8836 – Moan-day

Got the mortgage payment in today – that’s the scary thing about trying to do the automated system on a Sunday. If it’s down, there’s no human out there to run wingman for you. Chase has been really good about customer service and system uptime since I started using them as the primary banking for the Deerfield place. Additionally, it seems like they’re being quite helpful law-wise regarding the condo commandos. BHK is sending them an information packet about recent shenanigans, and I think that they’ll lend quite a strong arm to our side. It’s good to have a law school graduate in the family (not to mention attorney-type contacts all over the region, too).

I feel a bit for Lileks situation. To go from fun writing (colorful opinion pieces and slice of life type stuff) to straight news can’t be fun. Additionally, he can’t telecommute anymore. I may not often agree with his politics, but he’s an entertaining writer. At least he wasn’t Dooced.

It seems like the season for gig change with many of the folks I read. Both parenthood (especially Motherhood) and relocation appear to be common themes. Come to think of it, I just got my current gig about a month ago, and am still seeking a more permanent and lucrative venue in the meantime.

I am picking up some skills that I didn’t have before in a few of the software fundamentals arena; Altiris is pretty snazzy, though I lean a bit more to remote desktop for just straight-up handling. I’ve put more ram and HD into systems in the lase four weeks than I have in probably a decade, and had a lot of fun investigating city wireless for police and others – not wifi, but alternate private formatted networking. As for the public service side of things, all but a very few exceptions are laid-back and grateful for any help.

I think that I forgot to mention what sort of ice cream we had at Aardvark’s; BHK had a play-doh shake (vanilla colored a perfect yellow, with sugar cookie dough mixed in, tinted pink and light blue-green), and I had a double scoop on a sugar cone. Birthday cake and play-doh, making it the first non-chocolate related ice cream cone that I can remember. Usually, I get at least mint chocolate chip.

I’m long overdue to send a note to talk with Danny, Todd, Steve, Kevin, GP & Kat, Chad and countless others. I don’t know what’s happened to my social email skills, but they’ve atrophied greatly. Maybe it’d be simpler to telephone some of them to touch base and say a friendly hello just to see how everyone is doing? I’m not sure if it’d take more or less time to do so.

Adam’s last sporting event as a high-scholar is this afternoon. Tennis match, a week or two of remaining exams, and then he’s off to University of Maryland . I was pleased to hear that he and Kendall went to prom together romantically rather than just buddies; that’s a time for slow dances and some heart-shaped fireworks. They’re a terribly cute couple, and clean up nicely. Pictures may follow if Adam shoots me an email soon.

It has been difficult to look for a job when a good chunk of each weekday is spent actually working. I don’t really have many chores at home to do, but the workday is quite full.

I feel really good about this bit (insert 52 image here from scans daily) with the Dibneys. Return to the Thin man and Topper style days… I’d totally go for a mystery-solving phantom couple.

I keep forgetting that google document has a post feature. It works a bit more simply than just posting from the mobile phone, unless of course I do a voice entry.

Summer is coming, and I could do with a lime-vanilla ice with my beloved after a promenade down the boardwalk.

Dreamt about riding eurail to Florida to look for lost papers, brother renamed to carrot, stolen id notes.

Pidgin 2.0 is out… will it kill my trillian freebie at last?

Back to Monday – work is being kind to me this morning, for which I am thankful. I tucked into bed far too late last night, given that I was drowsing as of about 5pm; I fully intended to take a little nap once we got home, but the siren call of

Pente.net seems to be down for good. I’ll miss it, but fortunately I have my pente-pal as a live-in partner now! Plus, we have a game board should we wish to do the turn-by-turn sort of thing with real pieces and all. We still haven’t hooked into freeciv or freecol, though it’s looking now like freecol may be the one for us. (I’d also like to play some counterstrike with her, too)

Kite flying yesterday was pretty fun; we all managed to get some fresh air, and even BHK’s little ‘el Bastardito’ made it up with a minimum of fuss. TM’s pink albatross was probably the most difficult to get airborne; the tail wasn’t keeping the nose up very well. Once it made it up, however, it glided nicely and other nearby seabirds wanted to check it out. I’d venture that my frog kite was the easiest to send up this time around. Adam’s little stunt kite was certainly the most maneuverable – he’s able to let it skim the water and then flick rat-tail raindrops on whichever bystanders he chooses to moisten.

On our way to the store, we drove past a nearby graveyard and region of greenery that was amazing. The photos don’t do it any justice at all, but some shots were kind of nifty, anyhow. I dig the one where we’re in motion and looking backwards from the car. (the 2nd and 3rd from the end)

Free Comic book day yesterday was extra bonus awesome at Aardvark. Free comics are even better when you can double your haul when you bring a partner with you – 4 books each! I think the winning books were the Umbrella Academy (Hellboy meets nextwave) and Charlie Brown ones. Aardvark is pretty cool… ice cream/ video / gaming / comic book store in a prime location. Friendly, knowledgeable manager/ owners, too.

We picked up a copy of Monsters Menace America for half off… I can take it off of my amazon wish list now.

Also obtained were a few packets for the Bella Sara game. Nice untapped market for card games… young girls from 5-10 years of age. We stopped at Moes for a tasty Mexican-ish lunch to open and review our cards.

Finally met Alan… I’ve heard a lot about him, and he was quite nice. I look forward to getting together with him and meeting JC in the future. We had veggie taco/ burritos for din-din.. I got a bit ill, but all and all, it was a nice night.

8834 – Cinco de mayo

The 5th of May is not Mexican Independence Day, but it should be! And Cinco de Mayo is not an American holiday, but it should be. Mexico declared its independence from mother Spain on midnight, the 15th of September, 1810. And it took 11 years before the first Spanish soldiers were told and forced to leave Mexico .

So, why Cinco de Mayo? And why should Americans savor this day as well? Because 4,000 Mexican soldiers smashed the French and traitor Mexican army of 8,000 at Puebla, Mexico, 100 miles east of Mexico City on the morning of May 5, 1862.

The French had landed in Mexico (along with Spanish and English troops) five months earlier on the pretext of collecting Mexican debts from the newly elected government of democratic President (and Indian) Benito Juarez. The English and Spanish quickly made deals and left. The French, however, had different ideas.

Under Emperor Napoleon III, who detested the United States , the French came to stay. They brought a Hapsburg prince with them to rule the new Mexican empire. His name was Maximilian; his wife, Carolota. Napoleon’s French Army had not been defeated in 50 years, and it invaded Mexico with the finest modern equipment and with a newly reconstituted Foreign Legion. The French were not afraid of anyone, especially since the United States was embroiled in its own Civil War.

The French Army left the port of Vera Cruz to attack Mexico City to the west, as the French assumed that the Mexicans would give up should their capital fall to the enemy — as European countries traditionally did.

Under the command of Texas-born General Zaragosa, (and the cavalry under the command of Colonel Porfirio Diaz, later to be Mexico ‘s president and dictator), the Mexicans awaited. Brightly dressed French Dragoons led the enemy columns. The Mexican Army was less stylish.

General Zaragosa ordered Colonel Diaz to take his cavalry, the best in the world, out to the French flanks. In response, the French did a most stupid thing; they sent their cavalry off to chase Diaz and his men, who proceeded to butcher them. The remaining French infantrymen charged the Mexican defenders through sloppy mud from a thunderstorm and through hundreds of head of stampeding cattle stirred up by Indians armed only with machetes.

When the battle was over, many French were killed or wounded and their cavalry was being chased by Diaz’ superb horsemen miles away. The Mexicans had won a great victory that kept Napoleon III from supplying the confederate rebels for another year, allowing the United States to build the greatest army the world had ever seen. This grand army smashed the Confederates at Gettysburg just 14 months after the battle of Puebla, essentially ending the Civil War.

Union forces were then rushed to the Texas/Mexican border under General Phil Sheridan, who made sure that the Mexicans got all the weapons and ammunition they needed to expel the French. American soldiers were discharged with their uniforms and rifles if they promised to join the Mexican Army to fight the French. The American Legion of Honor marched in the Victory Parade in Mexico , City.

It might be a historical stretch to credit the survival of the United States to those brave 4,000 Mexicans who faced an army twice as large in 1862. But who knows?

In gratitude, thousands of Mexicans crossed the border after Pearl Harbor to join the U.S. Armed Forces. As recently as the Persian Gulf War, Mexicans flooded American consulates with phone calls, trying to join up and fight another war for America .

Mexicans, you see, never forget who their friends are, and neither do Americans. That’s why Cinco de Mayo is such a party — A party that celebrates freedom and liberty. There are two ideals which Mexicans and Americans have fought shoulder to shoulder to protect, ever since the 5th of May, 1862. VIVA! el CINCO DE MAYO!!

8833 – Friday –

Dawn rises on a new day. I crashed hard last night and was a clumsy oaf this morning… it seemed like only 7 out of 8 cylinders was firing for the first two hours of wakefulness. BHK was good about taking up my slack, however.

There was a little bit o’ hustle first thing this morning at work – some folks are out due to nascar being in town, and others are heading to the 400th anniversary of Jamestown near Williamsburg . Apparently the Queen of England is there right now, before she’s off to the Kentucky Derby.

Speaking of the Kentucky Derby, BHK and I both are enjoying Ace of Cakes… the pilot episode had them making a cake for the big Maryland horse race. I don’t much care for the people’s personalities, but looking at the local color of the scenery and landmarks is a nifty thing… plus the architecture of both the local buildings and the cakes is pretty fascinating to observe. So far, my favorites are the University of Maryland Terp and the Taj Mahal cakes, though the Scrabble cake was pretty dang neat, too.

I’m slowly but surely turning BHK onto Good Eats with Alton Brown, too. She pointed out that he certainly has a fondness for deep frying – and on that same note, she made some awesome falafel for lunch (with Cathy and Lyn) yesterday. Partially to thank Lyn for the legal help regarding the condo board issues we’ve been having.

Blood donation –

Appointments are recommended and can be made by calling 1-800-GIVE BLOOD or 1-800-448-3256. Or the Chapter Directly 301 934 2066

I need exercise. I want some fresh air. I’d like to do good some works. I want to avoid bending in the middle for the time being, and not get sunburn.

I wouldn’t mind a replay of last weekend… a day with just bhk, and a day with friends and family.

Maybe we can go geocaching this weekend?

I miss George as a radio station; random access of assorted good tunes is a lot better than 24/7 gospel, at least to me. My only complaint about the place was that there was no visible rhyme or reason between songs at all.

Congratulations on Cath555’s engagement! I look forward to hearing how things continue and develop as time goes by.

Tomorrow is Free comic book day, and I want to go get me some. Green alien head, hopefully, if not, someplace local that will shower me with pretty four-color paper comics and toys available just for the asking.

Maybe they’ll have a Zombie lawyer in the loose hero / horrorclix bin.

Quick aside, the heartbeat sensor in the new Volvos both piss me off and make me say keeno! (I’d love to see alternate usage for the thing like “don’t drive angry!” for high heart rates) Remember! A heartbeat sensor won’t protect you from Zombies, Mummies or other undead that are lacking a heartbeat!

Hmm, will it detect ghosts that do the lub-dub noise? Recordings? Beat boxers? I think that bears investigation on my part.

Reprinted from last year

We’re directly opposite of Halloween at this point. The season started with Candlemas / Groundhog’s Day has come to an end.

May 1 marks the final victory of Spring over Winter, but before departing, the witches and their cohorts have one last fling. The night from April 30 to May 1 is called “Walpurgisnacht”, the night of Walpurgis or Walpurga. The festival is marked by numerous rituals to ward off evil. Legend has it that on Walpurgisnacht the witches would gather on the Brocken, the highest peak in the Harz Mountains. Because of the Walpurgisnacht scene in Goethe’s Faust, in which Mephistopheles takes Faust to the Brocken and has him revel with the witches, the witches gathering became widely known.

Under Christian influence Walpurgisnacht became a fest to drive out evil spirits. Walpurgis derives its name from Walpurga or Walburga. Walburga, Abbess of Heidenheim near Eichstätt, a Catholic Saint, was known as the protectoress against witchcraft and sorcery. On the Eve of May 1, bells may toll in some areas and prayers may be said; there may be blessings with holy-water and blessed sprigs can be found in homes and barns. The most widespread remedy against evil spirits during Walpurgisnacht is noise. As soon as the sun sets, boys of all ages may make noise. Their equipment ranges from boards to beat onto the ground to pistols for firing shots.

In Bavaria the night from April 30 to May 1 is called a Freinacht or Drudennacht. For youth it is an opportunity to play tricks. They may stroll in groups through the streets and wind toilet-paper around cars, smear door-handles with tooth-paste, unhinge garden doors and carry them a few meters away, and they may displace shoe scrapers. It is said that at one time boys took a sparred-frame cart to pieces and reassembled it on the roof of the house of the owner.

May 1st marks the victory of Spring over Winter, but before departing the Hexen have one last fling and make an attempt to assert their power on Walpurgisnacht. This Hexennacht is the best known in the seasonal cycle. The roots for this fest extend back to a pre-Christian Frühjahrsfest, which was perhaps celebrated in an even more rowdy fashion, as the Valborgs maessafton is still celebrated today in Sweden, Thueringen and elsewhere. Under Christian influence it was probably transformed into a fest to drive out the Hexen. The festival became widely known outside Germany due to Goethe’s use of this theme in Faust.

The festival is marked by numerous rituals to ward off evil. On the eve of May 1st the bells toll in Luxembourg and many prayers are said, there are blessings with holy-water and blessed-palms in the homes and barns. In Schmalkalden in Thueringen the little girls, dressed as Hexen themselves, chase out the Walpermännchen. They wear paper hats and sometimes carry sticks in their hands. Similarly, in the south Harz region, the young boys ride stick-horses and chase the Hexen out of the fields. The most widespread remedy against evil spirits during Walpurgisnacht is noise. The boys begin making noise as soon as the sun sets. In Bohemia boards are beaten onto the ground in front of the houses, accompanied by this chant: “Hex geh raus, ‘s brennt dei Haus.” Whoever hears a pistol shot on that evening is supposed to say, “Schiess mei Hex a mit!” In Lippe the noise is referred to as “Maiklappen.” A lot of noise is especially made in front of the houses of married couples who are childless, because it is believed that it is necessary to “further the blessings.” In the Berner Jura the shepherd boys, on the eve of May 1, stand atop the manure-piles and crack whips in order to drive away wolves. The wolf is the incarnation of evil, and symbolizes the departure of winter. The manure-pile symbolizes fertility of the fields and gardens, and therefore is often the locale where prayers are said. Farmers who don’t have as many cattle help each other out in the summer. They make a pledge-group, which takes this form in Donaueschingen: they go to a nearby chapel and pray, then they climb together onto a manure-pile, hold hands, and say “Mir (=wir) gmaren miteinand,” which means “we are helping each other to bring home hay and grain with our cattle.” [i.e. they are sharing each other’s manure-piles, which is sprayed onto the fields as fertilizer].

So, folks, there is a parable here — when we lapse into slinging mud at each other, we should look at it from a higher perspective — we are really fertilizing each other’s fields!

Wide Variety of apparel at the concert tonight – from dudes in kilts to gypsy girls, to yuppie-types in suit and tie to casual looks.

Bigger onslaught of oddball text messages and spam comments in the journal. Detail to follow.

New AV guy started today – 7 hours a week. Primarily for commissioner webcasts. Looks a little bit like Jim from The Office.

There’s a lien on the Deerfield property – threatening foreclosure. It’s over a $1600 assessment which appears to be illegal. Approximately 20 people out of the 35 members being assessed for C & D building are refusing to pay, and BHK agrees that it’s a form of extortion by a corrupt condo association. So, we’re holding off for now.

Very sleepy this morning – 6:45 was gray and cool… good hibernation weather.

I forget if I posted this – the difference between working in broward and calvert counties – rec’d in my email box last week or so:

“I found a $5 bill on the floor in front of the drinking fountain. If it belongs to you it is at Gypsy’s desk.”

Now THAT is funny to me.

8820 – Misc Steve memories

Well, go figure! I post about Steve J, and he goes and finds my LJ. That makes 4 folks from high school reconnected! ( Clayton Griffin, Jim Goodmon, Steve Mancour and Steve Jacoby.)

It seems that SJ has been quite busy these last two decades or so. (I guess that’d follow!) He is now married, has a beautiful family, and has had broad assortment of careers. He still looks just the same – actually, probably a bit healthier than I remember. I imagine that chasing the little ones around helps a lot as a form of working out (in addition to martial arts training.) I was apparently way off on the Broward county search; He’s now on the opposite side of the continental USA in Seattle . When I got the reply to my last entry, I first thought it was from one of my LJ buddies having a prank on me. I was suspecting that perhaps Robert or some other Seattleite (Is that a word? Must be … spell-check seems to like it.) was pulling my leg. Not so – even though Steve Jacoby is a pretty common name on Google & Yahoo (The name of one of the victims from 9/11, not to mention countless others.) Beau Brumfield is less so – which led to his finding my LJ. Not sure how long he’d been reading it before yesterday when I mentioned that I’d like to hear from him – it’s been quite a while since he came up in online conversation.

Steve and I sort of lost touch after high school… he was focusing primarily on the Arts crowd and I’d slid into a more Technological Track. The last I’d heard, he had headed North to Tennessee (or perhaps Kentucky , as third hand information tends to degrade rapidly) when I was in college, and we never really kept up. He and I both gave up on Brent about the same time – Once BA started hanging out with Jaques and the LWC post-grad crowd, things degraded pretty rapidly. I sort of slid over to the James Dawsey / Robin Tunkel gaming crowd.

Random notes about Steve – both he and Brent were in my first car on the first day I was driving.

He had a VW that seemed to have one headlight perpetually out. My first experience with hearing an air-cooled engine. I can’t even guess at how many rides he gave me to places. I rode to school with Randy Leipzig (who later killed himself over a depression / girlfriend issue) and [whatshisname Justin, maybe? – curly haired guy w/ glasses.]

Horsing around the swimming pool at Lisa Gordon’s house (one of our first meetings with Lisa and Pam M), I went to push him into the water. And missed by about three feet. He got scraped up a bit, and I felt amazingly bad about it. Most likely I was especially guilty due to my being a show-off in front of Pam. Steve was a bit po’ed, but was a pretty dang good sport about it.

Pre-high school, when I went to Congress middle, he frequently helped me with my stuff onto the bus – a heavy book bag (1/3 school stuff, 2/3 reading materials not part of the curriculum D&D, generally) and a Tuba (or Baritone, depending on the day I was bringing stuff home)

Steve and I were both thugs in the LWC movie “The Arthurian Project”, and we made an assortment of goofy movies like “Raiders of the Lost Sock”. We both picked up on some very rudimentary stop motion techniques. I wonder if I still have that video tape in storage at the Deerfield Condo? Might be fun to digital transfer and post those.

All you can eat Po’ folks country fried steak night… Steve passed out and was rushed to the hospital in an ambulance. I thought he was goofing at first.

Steve’s dad always had tastycakes on top of the fridge, and smoked.

Ken Krupowies lived not too far from Steve’s place.

Steve, Scott Clark and I playing impossible mission and eating pizza at Clark ’s place. Clark ’s mom had a gentleman caller, and we could hear them enjoying each other’s company through the wall. I made a little comment about it and Clark turned up the TV volume, and I was never invited back. Steve said it was because I left pizza under Clark ’s bed, but I really think it was my comment. When have I *ever* left pizza behind?

Of the old gang, Steve was the nice guy of the group, and I think probably the most physically durable.

We went on a few road trips here and there – Complete Strategist, other gaming stores, the Xanadu KFC, Kevin Cummin’s Father’s cabin

Steve’s silly recreation of Clayton Griffin’s Print shop obsession

“HE’S SO MAGIC!” – a la Flaming Carrot

Playing D&D with SJ, BA, LG, PM – pre-canned sessions of silly polyhedral stupidity, Arduin grimore dungeon crawl, with day-glo orange covers.

I need to flesh each of these out some more… so BHK knows what I’m talking about, at least.

Today at work, I had First Jolly rancher in about two decades – grape. Yum.

8819 – Earth Day!

Biggest thing is that we have roto-tilled the garden… a fitting earth day event. LB, CB and BHK all are really pushing forward with it today. The weather is perfect for it… 79 degrees and sunny. A top day to be out in the green and dirt. House windows are open and those of us confined to quarters are doing ok, too.

So, What did the boys do for earth day? Lounge in the sun while I did my gig seek –

Heard from Steve Mancour yesterday – I guess he found my website vanity surfing. I wonder if Steve Jacoby will ever stumble over my LJ? Mancour was mentioned only twice – 1/14/2004 6403 , and 11/28/2005 7959

He seems to be quite the world traveler now – Germany, Panama, Spain and the UK. I’m glad things look to be going his way.

[edit – I may’ve found Steve J by way of Broward County Records Search. I’m glad that I remembered his middle name. ]

Went with BHK to visit Amy and her family at a nearby flyball event. The dogs were adorable and seemed to be having a really good time. Strange to see an event with such a wide variety of breeds.

Stumbled across Woodbine (at the juncture of the Patapsco River, the B&O Railroad, and the road that runs north from Lisbon to Winfield, Maryland on Liberty Road (Maryland Route 26) and through to Westminster, Maryland. The original road from Baltimore to Frederick runs just north of Lisbon, following a slight ridge line westward halfway to Woodbine (the road was finally paved in the 1960s). This was the original trail that existed before the National Road was built (the road that runs through Lisbon).

Rebel calvary crossed the Patapsco River at Woodbine and at Hoods Mill, just a few miles eastward on the river and the B&O Railroad scouting the Union Army that was on its way to the Battle of Gettysburg. The main road at that time ran just west of the existing road and up the west side of a creek that runs south and that joins with the Patapsco River just 100 yards west of the existing road. That original road, now partly unused runs north 100 yards from the river and then eastward to join up with the existing road today. There was no bridge at that time, just a ford in the river.

The town straddles the Patapsco River both north (into Carroll County) and South (into Howard County). In the 1920s and 1930s the town had a large canning factory on the Carroll County side of the river . There was another small canning factory, from the turn of the century, run by water power west of Woodbine at the foot of New Port Hill. Remains of the factory still exist and the sluice where water came to run the machinery is still visible in the wooded area below New Port Hill leading north to the dam, no longer existing.

Just north 300 yards and west of the existing road was a wormseed distillery, where wormseed oil was steam-distilled during the 1930s and 1940s; this small factory was later converted into a tomato and corn canning factory.
