8340 – Friday 5

1. Have you ever been to Mexico?

Yup! Mostly for Ruins and Diving…. I’ve never been to TJ. Climbing a pyramid is hard work when you’re used to being at sea level, by the way.

2. Do you know anyone who is currently in the military?

Sure, tons of ’em, some in my family. Though the majority are retired, there are plenty of active folks. Best known I’d say is Cousin Kelly – Marine.

3. What is the last party you attended?

hm. Good question. Birthday, I think? J Peters had one at the club a month or three ago.

4. What do you think about President Bush saying that the United States’ National Anthem should only be sung in English?

Heck, I don’t care. If someone’s heart is in the right place, knock yourself out in the format. Spanish, English, Esperanto, ASL, Klingon, while dropping acid like Jimi or grabbing your crotch like Roseanne. That’s sort of what the USA is supposed to be about.. that whole Melting Pot thing. If it were another country besides this one, I’d say stick to the native tongue.

Bush isn’t the first to try to remove native loyalties – Woodrow Wilson’s greatest fear was the 15 million immigrants that flooded into the United States between 1900 and 1915. The single largest ethnic group in the United States was German-American. Then there were the Irish-Americans — with the Irish Republican Army launching an uprising against British rule on Easter, 1916. Wilson feared that these two groups would not be willing to take up the fight for the USA. In fact, Wilson proclaimed, “Any man who caries a hyphen around with him carries a dagger that he is ready to plunge into the vitals of the republic.”

5. French fries or freedom fries?

French Fries. And it’s Sauerkraut, not Victory Cabbage. Kee-ripes.

(Funny that Cinco De Mayo is about defeating the French.)

Just heard a commercial for Mega-M&M’s.

I thought I heard “maggot M&M’s” Ugh. Not at 6am, please. Ack. Ptui.

Nice to see that there are a few alternatives to fighting the masses of humanity that are going to be at Sunfest and the Air & Sea Show this weekend.

I might do #10 – Try to get my head around the fact that the Ancient Spanish Monastery and St. Bernard de Clairvaux Church in North Miami Beach is the oldest building in the western hemisphere. It was built in Spain in the 10th century, purchased by William Randolph Hearst in 1925 and finally reassembled in Florida in the 1950s. Cistercian monks lived in the building for its first 700 years of life. 16711 W. Dixie Highway. North Miami Beach, 305-945-1461. 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, but call ahead because it closes for the many weddings and receptions that are held on its grounds. Admission: $5 adults, $2.50 students and seniors, $2 children 12 and younger.

Who knew that a 1000 year old building is right up the street?

Moment of Lyric – REM by way of the Cardigans – MP3

Oh, life is bigger
It’s bigger than you
And you are not me
The lengths that I will go to
The distance in your eyes
Oh no, I’ve said too much

8337 – Only Thursday… or is it Thursday Already?

I remember back when you could go to Pizza Hut to have a nice sit-down meal with a friend or three. Are any of them still like that anymore?

That’s one of the things I sort of miss about PamM.I’ve got about a decade’s worth of memories of High School world and times after… and all of my real cohorts are either dead or gone. Steve Jacoby vanished into obscurity, Brent died, and Pam and I probably will never speak again. I don’t have anyone left to really reminisce with about those times anymore. Kev’s about as close as it gets, but he was at a different school… and the memories are of a different sort.. Kev was one of my “Computer Pals” (like JimG, who I still hear from every year or so.), Those mentioned before that were my gaming/school friends. It’s kind of funny… Pam lives less than four miles from me, and we share some common friends, but I don’t know if I could communicate with her on a reasonable level if I ever saw her again. We were good friends, and unfortunate foes – for the same personality reasons. Maybe someday we’ll talk again, but I’d put odds in the slim to none range. A shame I can’t just reconnect with the good parts of that friendship… I don’t really care to see what happens to social politics when we mix, but some of the in-jokes and “good old days” sort of stuff.

That’s the funny thing about compartmentalizing friends… if you lose a smaller amount, that chunk fades totally into the past. Old Computer buds from back when I had a 110 character per sec modem… ran fidonet and BBS systems is pretty fun to talk about… but similar memories of going to the complete strategist and gaming in the living room form that time are gone. Watching TV while talking on the phone and chatting… Matt Frewer on Doctor Doctor caused us to laugh our heads off. Trip to Disney was probably one of the first signals of how we were bringing out the less than stellar sides of one another. Halloween costumes. Watching Zardoz and comiserating about our folks, when we were both still living at home with parents.

Ah well.. the nice thing now is that I can make new memories with old friends, new ones, and those that fall in between. Learn from my mistakes, profit from my successes.

Carrageenan is awesome stuff. I first learned about it on a cartoon segment (Undersea Adventures of Captain Nemo – about a pod of whales and a seaweed farm) in an episode of Captain Kangaroo.

Does impersonating W’s voice and Goober from Andy Griffith show sound the same to anyone but me? IQ 85 southerner sort of vibe?

Hooray for mail!

Yesterday I got two lovely bits of mail…. a postcard from Bubbles, and two bookmarks from ilene! The postcard was a pleasant surprise… Bubs has the best handwriting… able to fit a lovely amount of content onto a mailer. The Bookmarks are even nicer than I’d hoped they would be. A monkey on one, and Newton on the other.. what more could I ask for?

Upon yesterday’s weighing, I’ve gained all the weight I lost on WW point plan back. no good. I’ve been eating poorly since October, and it was building up for a while before then. Time to go back to the plan, account for everything, and lose it again. This time, no going off plan.

Starting Today, I’m back to using the palmtop to monitor everything. This time, no sloughing off once the holidays roll by… Rather pesky that I’m starting from Square one again, but at least I know of a system that works for me.

Bro called again (at 11:30pm), to do an arrest lookup for him. Some guy on coke charges – looked rough in the mug shot. Bro first told me it was some girlfriend’s dad, but then I saw the guy was born in ’65. I asked how old his GF was, and he said 28… caught him in a lie there. He changed his story afterward – Next call I get from him after 10, I’m just going ot ask him to call me during more civil hours.

8332 – MAYDAY! MAYDAY! MONDAY! ARGH!

The Sarah Jane episode of Dr. Who didn’t disappoint, and it was delightful to see both her and K9 again. I do think that if the Doctor had been a little less “devil may care”, a lot fewer innocents would’ve been killed.

In other TV news, I was enjoying Charmed, until they added the blond “cousin oliver”. See also the addition of the kid on Gilmore Girls. They’re just counting down to the end.

Is it true that 1 human being out of 5 is a Chinese farmer? There are a lot of 20% breakdowns on google.

A few –

  1. one in every five Americans are currently infected with a sexually transmitted viral disease.
  2. One in every five Americans, experiences some type of mental disorder each year
  3. The bacteria that cause meningococcal disease are carried by about one in every five people.
  4. One in every five people in Nairobi is HIV positive
  5. About one in every five people have genital herpes
  6. one in every five people in Jordan have made pledges to UNICEF
  7. One in every five people lack access to safe drinking water.
  8. one in every five people on the planet is a Muslim.
  9. One in every five people in Seoul owns dogs or other pets.
  10. Mild side effects of the Japanese Encephalitis Virus Vaccine occur in about one in every five people who receive it.
  11. one in every five people has a reading problem
  12. One in every five people in the developing world is chronically undernourished
  13. By 2030, one in every five people is likely to be 65 or older
  14. one in every five people who work for the State of California works for the Department of Corrections
  15. one in every five people in the world is surviving on less than $1 a day
  16. One in every five people with sight problems has another disability
  17. One in every five people with HIV is a prison inmate or a former inmate
  18. In Michigan, nearly one in every five people is out of work

To the best of my knowledge, I don’t fall into any of those groups.

I’d say I know folks that fall into group #1, #2, #4 (but not from Nairobi), #5, #6, #8, #9 (in Seoul), #11, #13 (I think GP falls into that group… I’ll be 61), #14, #15, #16, #17

8331 – silly aim prank bots – “I say, old bean, have you seen my hat?”

I keep getting hit by the aim bot that starts out with “i say, old bean, have you seen my hat?”, usually aim user chewableputty.

An explanation of how the bot works is here.

Check out the google search – it seems to be happening to quite a few people.

The greathatsby bot scans LJ users for AIM screen names then sends two people the same message and relays their replies to each other so each person thinks the other person IMed them out of the blue.

Sort of a new version of the 3-way calling prank. I’ve gotten pings (even when invisible to aim) maybe once a week for the last 6 weeks. a nifty part of the trick is that it auto translates your im name to the bot name when you’re in chat, too. so if you identify yourself as “I’m biglug23” it’ll say to the other side “I’m chewableputty”.

a way around it is to break it up with spaces or some other character – b’i’g’l’u’g’2’3′

8330 – Guten Drudennacht! Time for der Hexen-Orgie!

We’re directly opposite of Halloween at this point. The season started with Candlemas / Groundhog’s Day has come to an end.

May 1 marks the final victory of Spring over Winter, but before departing, the witches and their cohorts have one last fling. The night from April 30 to May 1 is called “Walpurgisnacht”, the night of Walpurgis or Walpurga. The festival is marked by numerous rituals to ward off evil. Legend has it that on Walpurgisnacht the witches would gather on the Brocken, the highest peak in the Harz Mountains. Because of the Walpurgisnacht scene in Goethe’s Faust, in which Mephistopheles takes Faust to the Brocken and has him revel with the witches, the witches gathering became widely known.

Under Christian influence Walpurgisnacht became a fest to drive out evil spirits. Walpurgis derives its name from Walpurga or Walburga. Walburga, Abbess of Heidenheim near Eichstätt, a Catholic Saint, was known as the protectoress against witchcraft and sorcery. On the Eve of May 1, bells may toll in some areas and prayers may be said; there may be blessings with holy-water and blessed sprigs can be found in homes and barns. The most widespread remedy against evil spirits during Walpurgisnacht is noise. As soon as the sun sets, boys of all ages may make noise. Their equipment ranges from boards to beat onto the ground to pistols for firing shots.

In Bavaria the night from April 30 to May 1 is called a Freinacht or Drudennacht. For youth it is an opportunity to play tricks. They may stroll in groups through the streets and wind toilet-paper around cars, smear door-handles with tooth-paste, unhinge garden doors and carry them a few meters away, and they may displace shoe scrapers. It is said that at one time boys took a sparred-frame cart to pieces and reassembled it on the roof of the house of the owner.

May 1st marks the victory of Spring over Winter, but before departing the Hexen have one last fling and make an attempt to assert their power on Walpurgisnacht. This Hexennacht is the best known in the seasonal cycle. The roots for this fest extend back to a pre-Christian Frühjahrsfest, which was perhaps celebrated in an even more rowdy fashion, as the Valborgs maessafton is still celebrated today in Sweden, Thueringen and elsewhere. Under Christian influence it was probably transformed into a fest to drive out the Hexen. The festival became widely known outside Germany due to Goethe’s use of this theme in Faust.

The festival is marked by numerous rituals to ward off evil. On the eve of May 1st the bells toll in Luxembourg and many prayers are said, there are blessings with holy-water and blessed-palms in the homes and barns. In Schmalkalden in Thueringen the little girls, dressed as Hexen themselves, chase out the Walpermännchen. They wear paper hats and sometimes carry sticks in their hands. Similarly, in the south Harz region, the young boys ride stick-horses and chase the Hexen out of the fields. The most widespread remedy against evil spirits during Walpurgisnacht is noise. The boys begin making noise as soon as the sun sets. In Bohemia boards are beaten onto the ground in front of the houses, accompanied by this chant: “Hex geh raus, ‘s brennt dei Haus.” Whoever hears a pistol shot on that evening is supposed to say, “Schiess mei Hex a mit!” In Lippe the noise is referred to as “Maiklappen.” A lot of noise is especially made in front of the houses of married couples who are childless, because it is believed that it is necessary to “further the blessings.” In the Berner Jura the shepherd boys, on the eve of May 1, stand atop the manure-piles and crack whips in order to drive away wolves. The wolf is the incarnation of evil, and symbolizes the departure of winter. The manure-pile symbolizes fertility of the fields and gardens, and therefore is often the locale where prayers are said. Farmers who don’t have as many cattle help each other out in the summer. They make a pledge-group, which takes this form in Donaueschingen: they go to a nearby chapel and pray, then they climb together onto a manure-pile, hold hands, and say “Mir (=wir) gmaren miteinand,” which means “we are helping each other to bring home hay and grain with our cattle.” [i.e. they are sharing each other’s manure-piles, which is sprayed onto the fields as fertilizer].

So, folks, there is a parable here — when we lapse into slinging mud at each other, we should look at it from a higher perspective — we are really fertilizing each other’s fields!Geotarget

On the way to the meeting yesterday, a 16-wheeler ran over a piece of steel, which spun off to the right, and caused Elsie’s window to explode into the cab of the car. She was lucky… it took a big divot out of her doorframe. If it had hit an inch earlier, she’d probably be at least in the hospital right now. Fortunately, she’s unhurt. I got a spray of tiny glass fragments in my lap, too. I think this’ll be a good opportunity to clean out her car.

Socialists: Give apes human rights

The Spanish Socialist Party will introduce a bill in the Congress of Deputies calling for “the immediate inclusion of (simians) in the category of persons, and that they be given the moral and legal protection that currently are only enjoyed by human beings.” The PSOE’s justification is that humans share 98.4% of our genes with chimpanzees, 97.7% with gorillas, and 96.4% with orangutans.

The party will announce its Great Ape Project at a press conference tomorrow. An organization with the same name is seeking a UN declaration on simian rights which would defend ape interests “the same as those of minors and the mentally handicapped of our species.”

According to the Project, “Today only members of the species Homo sapiens are considered part of the community of equals. The chimpanzee, the gorilla, and the orangutan are our species’s closest relatives. They possess sufficient mental faculties and emotional life to justify their inclusion in the community of equals.”
