9036 – fri – posted from the train station
While Larry’s at Homecoming, Chris is going with BHK and me to a mineral and gem seminar / dinner up the street. Maerten’s loves Both the girls to death, and we get invites to all kinds of things like that.
I’m digging Little People– A tiny Street Art Project. Makes me want to keep my eyes extra open!
Watching the original (black and white, not the colorized fouling) Night of the Living Dead on the PSP while riding the train into work is rewarding… especially when the “hands in the windows” scene starts while you’re in a tunnel, and the train stops.. and all the cabin’s lights go out for about 10 seconds before starting back up again. Good timing. I’m just glad I didn’t have Jacob’s Ladder in there. Want to watch Night for free? It’s in the public domain you can view it there or download it – or just see it in 30 seconds, reenacted by bunnies.
Other classics that are free and legal to download and/or view online – Last Man on Earth for horror, or Suddenly for a bit of Noir.
Back in August, the Skull-a-Day blog (a new skull, every day!) ran this papercraft skull with moving jaw – including a downloadable PDF so you can print and assemble your own. Timely! Link (via Paperforest) More spooky paper toys here! (including a few games… like gravedigger , midnight banshees and phantoms vortex. Throw in some Halloween-themed paper dice!
I think my favorite character design in Nightmare Before Christmas is the little kid on the leash with his eyes sewn shut.

9035 – thurs HAPPY ANNIVERSARY TO BHK AND ME!
I’m so happy that we’ve found one another!
Song lyrics in my head – The Zombies seem terribly appropriate, given the sentiment and the season.
The warmth of your love’s
Like the warmth of the sun
And this will be our year,
Took a long time to come.
Don’t let go of my hand
Now the darkness is gone
And this will be our year,
Took a long time to come.
And I won’t forget the way you held me
Up when I was down.
And I won’t forget the way you said
“Darling, I love you.”
You gave me faith to go on,
Now we’re there,
And we’ve only just begun.
This will be our year,
Took a long time to come.
The warmth of your smile,
Smile for me little one.
And this will be our year,
Took a long time to come.
You don’t have to worry,
All your worry days are gone.
And this will be our year,
Took a long to come
And I won’t forget the way you held me
Up when I was down.
And I won’t forget the way you said
“Darling, I love you.”
You gave me faith to go on,
Now we’re there,
And we’ve only just begun.
This will be our year,
Took a long time to come.
Yeah, we’ve only just begun.
And this will be our year,
Took a long time to come.

Tonight we saw Nightmare before Christmas in 3-D… just the thing to get us into the seasonal mood. Visually appealing, but the music still doesn’t do much for me. Supper at the viet-thai place was ok, service sub-par, but the sauce was yummy!

My Partner in Crime.
Happy 1st Anniversary my beloved husband.
Thank you for making my heart light and and my life full of laughter.
For me every silly love song is about you.
Love doesn’t come in a minute,
Sometimes it doesn’t come at all
I only know that when I’m in it
It isnt silly, no, it isnt silly, love isnt silly at all.

BHK made some tasty quiche last night, and it was even more delicious as lunchtime leftovers today. Two kinds – Mozzarella & Garlic vs “Chicken” and Gouda.
Yum. In the battle of the quiches, I am the winner.
Yesterday’s lack of rain caught up with us today… the plants must be loving it, given how dry stuff has been.
I may try something new with pictures… since flickr does a by date, maybe a link in the archives will be fun. not sure how long it’ll last.
Annoying discovery yesterday, re: installing software via Citrix – add/remove is the way to go – it caused a pretty serious bit of havoc with some regularly used tools. fortunately, the tools were easily recovered and put in place. The error made no sense to me at the time – I may have to rethink application security if folks are putting stuff on there haphazardly. I did appraise the key folks of the situation and I don’t foresee it happening again.
App compatibility guide is very helpful.
Having a bit of difficulty with insurance – claim I’m not on my policy! Silly error, but it’s a bit of a hassle getting bills that insurance should just process. Spoke to our rep, and it should be fixed by the end of the week.
After work, we went with the in-laws to Jasper’s. Fairly unsatisfactory experiance. BHK was quoted as saying that it had all the style and panache of an Appleby’s. (I have to remember to update the review in the link above.)
I’m thinking that I’d like to take BHK and maybe others to Udupi Palace– I keep meaning to try, but it slips my mind when I’m in the region. It was mentioned to me by one of the bus drivers on my local route… and she seems to know what she’s talking about, based on the reviews.
Halloween doodle of the moment –

More fall pics!
I wonder if fearsome critter stories are fading out? The Hidebehind and hoop snake were the subjects of some of the very first books I picked up from a RIF function back when I was maybe 6 or 7 years old. I rarely hear mention of any of the critters in westerns I read these days. While whimsical, the tales could take a pretty nasty turn, not unlike most fairy tales from Europe.
With the exception of ATW man, I haven’t seen hide or hair of any Oktoberfest activities. That’s not to say there’s nothing going on. Perhaps it got lost amongst the Harvest Festivals, Haunted Houses, Corn Mazes, etc?
I’m already tired of hearing about the new “News nightmare” of super staph infections. Though, flesh eating super-bacteria is a nice element of October Halloween horror.

Dawn was a nice start to the day – red sky in morning, sailors take warning – it didn’t rain, but was cloudy throughout the day.
Thank goodness for UPDATE `INFORMATION_TABLE` SET `MODIFIED_DATE`=NULL WHERE (`MODIFIED_DATE`='0000-00-00 00:00:00')
or update INFORMATION_TABLE set `MODIFIED_DATE`= replace(`MODIFIED_DATE`,'0000-00-00 00:00:00',NULL); for that matter.
That line of code saved me about three hours worth of cleanup. Let a robot do the searching and replacing, eh?
Also, Mini York Peppermint patties. One is just enough.

Stalin’s half-man, half-ape super-warriors
(I think I linked to this a year or two ago, but it bears repeating. There are monkeys involved.)
THE Soviet dictator Josef Stalin ordered the creation of Planet of the Apes-style warriors by crossing humans with apes, according to recently uncovered secret documents.
Moscow archives show that in the mid-1920s Russia’s top animal breeding scientist, Ilya Ivanov, was ordered to turn his skills from horse and animal work to the quest for a super-warrior.
According to Moscow newspapers, Stalin told the scientist: “I want a new invincible human being, insensitive to pain, resistant and indifferent about the quality of food they eat.”
In 1926 the Politburo in Moscow passed the request to the Academy of Science with the order to build a “living war machine”. The order came at a time when the Soviet Union was embarked on a crusade to turn the world upside down, with social engineering seen as a partner to industrialisation: new cities, architecture, and a new egalitarian society were being created.
The Soviet authorities were struggling to rebuild the Red Army after bruising wars.
And there was intense pressure to find a new labour force, particularly one that would not complain, with Russia about to embark on its first Five-Year Plan for fast-track industrialisation.
Mr Ivanov was highly regarded. He had established his reputation under the Tsar when in 1901 he established the world’s first centre for the artificial insemination of racehorses.
Mr Ivanov’s ideas were music to the ears of Soviet planners and in 1926 he was dispatched to West Africa with $200,000 to conduct his first experiment in impregnating chimpanzees.
Meanwhile, a centre for the experiments was set up in Georgia – Stalin’s birthplace – for the apes to be raised.
Mr Ivanov’s experiments, unsurprisingly from what we now know, were a total failure. He returned to the Soviet Union, only to see experiments in Georgia to use monkey sperm in human volunteers similarly fail.
A final attempt to persuade a Cuban heiress to lend some of her monkeys for further experiments reached American ears, with the New York Times reporting on the story, and she dropped the idea amid the uproar.
Mr Ivanov was now in disgrace. His were not the only experiments going wrong: the plan to collectivise farms ended in the 1932 famine in which at least four million died.
For his expensive failure, he was sentenced to five years’ jail, which was later commuted to five years’ exile in the Central Asian republic of Kazakhstan in 1931. A year later he died, reportedly after falling sick while standing on a freezing railway platform.
