8842 – sunday

Mother’s Day went well – Called my mom up and went out to breakfast with BHK, LB and CB for blueberry pancakes. Amongst things discussed was the Gaia hypothesis, which I adore. I like the fact that LB is so pragmatic about the earth continuing on, despite her ailments.

After, we went home and read on the shady part of the porch while we drank sun tea. That was probably my favorite part of the weekend. I suspect that was the only alone-time BHK and I had together all weekend long. The book I started was L. Sprague de Camp’s Tales from Gavagan’s Bar. After that brief solitude, We went back to the in-laws for a little cookout with them and TM. The spread was quite plentiful – Grilled hot dogs (meaty and veggie) with all kinds of fixings – chili, slaw, kraut, dill pickles, deviled eggs, teriyaki green beans, cake from the bake sale on Saturday (tasty yellow with chocolate icing), and who knows what else. Plenty of leftovers for Monday and Tuesday’s lunches!

JD’s b’day party this weekend – going to try to go if I can, sounds like a great time – 2 bands, lots of people looking to have some fun.

8841 – Saturday

Friday – CB shanghaied BHK almost immediately after BHK dropped me at work… CB was in the mood to shop and play hooky, so BHK was happy to be an accessory of sorts. About 4pm, BHK called to let me know that LB would be picking me up due to the severe shopitis that had overtaken CB. CB’s a member of the bataan death march school of outings, it seems.

While BHK was trudging through store after store in pursuit of CB’s bargain-quest, LB and I decided to head to the blue house to put some final touches on the camaro before Saturday’s car show, drove to Tina’s to show it to her, and then off to Thursday’s for a bite of dinner and conversation. Seven O’Clock came and went, so we toddled down the jetty to do a little fishing – more of an excuse to take in a nice bay breeze as the sun went down. We caught (and promptly released) a striped perch… who knew that there were actually fish out this early? Sorry, mr pisces!

They still hadn’t returned by dark, so we went back inside and hung out with Ms. Tigger and watched CSI / played PSP until they got back home at about 10:30.

On the way out, I noticed the in-laws clematis flowers were blooming nicely – took a few shots.

Saturday’s Car show was a hoot – got some color due to being out in the sun, saw plenty of classic bits of automotive technology, enjoyed LB’s company while BHK and TM went to an assortment of yard sales. Biggest prize was a $3 sheet cake obtained at one of the Yard / Bake Sales. I’m all for a tasty yellow cake with chocolate icing, enough to feed a roomful of people comfortably. BHK also picked up two antique books for me, one Legends of the Old West and another on the Rivers of the Chesapeake Bay, and obtained a huge serving platter for CB for mother’s Day for a pittance.

Car-type Pictures from Saturday – likely only interesting to me

8836 – Moan-day

Got the mortgage payment in today – that’s the scary thing about trying to do the automated system on a Sunday. If it’s down, there’s no human out there to run wingman for you. Chase has been really good about customer service and system uptime since I started using them as the primary banking for the Deerfield place. Additionally, it seems like they’re being quite helpful law-wise regarding the condo commandos. BHK is sending them an information packet about recent shenanigans, and I think that they’ll lend quite a strong arm to our side. It’s good to have a law school graduate in the family (not to mention attorney-type contacts all over the region, too).

I feel a bit for Lileks situation. To go from fun writing (colorful opinion pieces and slice of life type stuff) to straight news can’t be fun. Additionally, he can’t telecommute anymore. I may not often agree with his politics, but he’s an entertaining writer. At least he wasn’t Dooced.

It seems like the season for gig change with many of the folks I read. Both parenthood (especially Motherhood) and relocation appear to be common themes. Come to think of it, I just got my current gig about a month ago, and am still seeking a more permanent and lucrative venue in the meantime.

I am picking up some skills that I didn’t have before in a few of the software fundamentals arena; Altiris is pretty snazzy, though I lean a bit more to remote desktop for just straight-up handling. I’ve put more ram and HD into systems in the lase four weeks than I have in probably a decade, and had a lot of fun investigating city wireless for police and others – not wifi, but alternate private formatted networking. As for the public service side of things, all but a very few exceptions are laid-back and grateful for any help.

I think that I forgot to mention what sort of ice cream we had at Aardvark’s; BHK had a play-doh shake (vanilla colored a perfect yellow, with sugar cookie dough mixed in, tinted pink and light blue-green), and I had a double scoop on a sugar cone. Birthday cake and play-doh, making it the first non-chocolate related ice cream cone that I can remember. Usually, I get at least mint chocolate chip.

I’m long overdue to send a note to talk with Danny, Todd, Steve, Kevin, GP & Kat, Chad and countless others. I don’t know what’s happened to my social email skills, but they’ve atrophied greatly. Maybe it’d be simpler to telephone some of them to touch base and say a friendly hello just to see how everyone is doing? I’m not sure if it’d take more or less time to do so.

Adam’s last sporting event as a high-scholar is this afternoon. Tennis match, a week or two of remaining exams, and then he’s off to University of Maryland . I was pleased to hear that he and Kendall went to prom together romantically rather than just buddies; that’s a time for slow dances and some heart-shaped fireworks. They’re a terribly cute couple, and clean up nicely. Pictures may follow if Adam shoots me an email soon.

It has been difficult to look for a job when a good chunk of each weekday is spent actually working. I don’t really have many chores at home to do, but the workday is quite full.

I feel really good about this bit (insert 52 image here from scans daily) with the Dibneys. Return to the Thin man and Topper style days… I’d totally go for a mystery-solving phantom couple.

I keep forgetting that google document has a post feature. It works a bit more simply than just posting from the mobile phone, unless of course I do a voice entry.

Summer is coming, and I could do with a lime-vanilla ice with my beloved after a promenade down the boardwalk.

Dreamt about riding eurail to Florida to look for lost papers, brother renamed to carrot, stolen id notes.

Pidgin 2.0 is out… will it kill my trillian freebie at last?

Back to Monday – work is being kind to me this morning, for which I am thankful. I tucked into bed far too late last night, given that I was drowsing as of about 5pm; I fully intended to take a little nap once we got home, but the siren call of

Pente.net seems to be down for good. I’ll miss it, but fortunately I have my pente-pal as a live-in partner now! Plus, we have a game board should we wish to do the turn-by-turn sort of thing with real pieces and all. We still haven’t hooked into freeciv or freecol, though it’s looking now like freecol may be the one for us. (I’d also like to play some counterstrike with her, too)

Kite flying yesterday was pretty fun; we all managed to get some fresh air, and even BHK’s little ‘el Bastardito’ made it up with a minimum of fuss. TM’s pink albatross was probably the most difficult to get airborne; the tail wasn’t keeping the nose up very well. Once it made it up, however, it glided nicely and other nearby seabirds wanted to check it out. I’d venture that my frog kite was the easiest to send up this time around. Adam’s little stunt kite was certainly the most maneuverable – he’s able to let it skim the water and then flick rat-tail raindrops on whichever bystanders he chooses to moisten.

8819 – Earth Day!

Biggest thing is that we have roto-tilled the garden… a fitting earth day event. LB, CB and BHK all are really pushing forward with it today. The weather is perfect for it… 79 degrees and sunny. A top day to be out in the green and dirt. House windows are open and those of us confined to quarters are doing ok, too.

So, What did the boys do for earth day? Lounge in the sun while I did my gig seek –

Heard from Steve Mancour yesterday – I guess he found my website vanity surfing. I wonder if Steve Jacoby will ever stumble over my LJ? Mancour was mentioned only twice – 1/14/2004 6403 , and 11/28/2005 7959

He seems to be quite the world traveler now – Germany, Panama, Spain and the UK. I’m glad things look to be going his way.

[edit – I may’ve found Steve J by way of Broward County Records Search. I’m glad that I remembered his middle name. ]

Had a lovely night last night – BHK made falafel, (including marinated cukes and feta cheese) along with some really good potatoes with dill for TM, the in-laws and me… it was really delicious. Tina seems a little glum over DR’s absence, but he’ll be along fairly soon for vacation. They all left fairly soon after dinner, and we did some light chores hither and yon both before and after our visitors were at the HQ.

We still haven’t watched Borat… I suspect that it’ll get absorbed into us by next midweek, whenever TM can make it over for more than an hour in front of the TV. (And not watch Dresden )

Still getting used to some aspects of married life – seeing someone lurking (i.e. innocently petting Pyewacket in the living room) around the house in the middle of the night while I’m half-asleep, shutting down for the evening. That makes me yelp, which in turn makes her yelp, leading into a low-end feedback loop of startled-ness for a moment. Flipside, she also makes me break into hysterical laughter fairly regularly. (American Idol the night before last, as an example – I have no idea why I was cracking up so much.)

8810 – RANDOM ACCESS

Work is interviewing for the network position today. I wonder when or if they’ll be asking me to sit with them today? I’m curious about the number of applicants.

When playing punch buggy my eyes tend to detect color first, then shape. I’m much less likely to see a white, black, gray/silver or navy blue bug than standouts like yellow, red or the brighter variants of blue and green. However, The “toaster” look of the Honda element is a good standout for me over colors. I can lock onto one of those much more easily than the bug. The dual-color ones seem to be easier for me to spot than the one-tones.

I have to dig up my birth certificate in order to get my driver’s license. It seems that my Florida state id isn’t enough. Bah.

Didn’t mow the lawn, and didn’t roto-till the garden, as it was too wet from the lovely rainy weekend. That’ll probably happen next Saturday.

Tomorrow, I’ll have been working for the county a month. That seems odd to me, somehow. I guess Friday will be a true work-month due to days off, etc.

Tina’s back from points elsewhere today, so we’ll probably have her over for an early dinner of falafel tonight. After that, I’m going to have to get one the stick, regarding the quest for more continuous employment.

Limited News source says that there are 21 dead at Virginia tech [edit- 32 dead, 28 wounded] – I don’t get how this happens. How broken in the head does a person have to be to run around a campus and start killing people with twin 9mm pistols? Sadly, my first mental image was that of the Shadow, with twin .45s barking out hot metal justice, but he’s a pulp fiction vigilante, not an actual insane non-fictional type being.

Found out that bro is breaking his probation already – Mom and WV went down to where they’d set his apartment up, and discovered that the place was empty. His probation officer called her looking for him, so it’s only a matter of time before he’s back in the clink. Turns out neither his rent, cell phone bill, nor his car insurance have been paid, so he’ll be driving with a suspended license in an uninsured vehicle. I’ll be checking the net periodically to let me know if he’s back in the pokey. [edit – he was evicted on 4/11]

I think I like stones and jewelry made from organic substances more than inorganic.

Pearls, amber, mastodon ivory, bone in general all had some sort of life-aspect about them before they were put into settings or whatnot.

Could the ghost of an oyster / tree haunt pearls / amber?

JD offered me some deer meat that he got while hunting. He bagged 13 last season, gave 10 to the hungry, and kept 3 in his freezer. The county electrician is apparently a great butcher.

Visited with the inlaws for a late breakfast and chit-chat, bugged out and proceeded to tina’s to do a little kitty-loving while she’s out of town, and then headed home to take care of some lingering duties I had left. Paid the cable bill, took care of this year’s taxes – I have about $700 coming back to me this year due to the interest paid on my condo. (it would’ve been only about $280, otherwise). I also logged about a dozen pepsi caps into the online car-contest thing. I’ve been harvesting both those and coke lids from the workplace (and in the case of coke, from our fridge) for about 3 weeks now. The coke site was down for repairs, but hopefully one or both of those will turn into something spiffy soon.

Busy busy – rep from dell isn’t coming in though, so that’s work saved for another day. Dead motherboard in a new box needs a swap.

Today’s lunch looks much like yesterdays, except you can swap the apple for green beans teriyaki w/almonds, and remove the tasty, tasty doughnut.

After work yesterday, I was surprised to see the in-laws with BHK had come to pick us up. CB,BHK and I took an early supper at Salsa Rita’s, while LB swung by 5 guys to grab a burger before joining the rest of us. I had a veggie burrito with a splash of enchilada sauce on top, as is my custom. Apparently, they did a little shopping on Solomon’s Island before picking me up… CB got BHK a peridot ring that is apparently quite stunning. (I haven’t seen it yet, but it sounds lovely.) Also planted is the seed of a stacking ring to go with her wedding band… perhaps with a channel-set green stone similar to peridot? Topaz is available in that same shade and hue, and is able to be cut thinly to make that sort of ring. Perhaps for our first anniversary or second (depending on cash flow issues) it would make a nice present. The huge beastie of a ring that CB got was a $3800 item… I’m a bit stunned at the cost, but I’m a guy who only wears one item of jewelry – my wedding band. (I had a necklace for a while, but it was hand-made by friends and was also sentimental. I still carry my red-thread wristband from Lisa on my hip-loop all the time too, primarily because my wrist is too large for it.

After dinner, LB and I went to Hot Licks to look at the guitars whilst BHK and CB headed over to the office depot to scope out supplies. Following that, we did a quick pop into the library for 1040 instruction sheets and state taxes for CB. No luck on the 1040, as the post office isn’t interested in carrying those items any longer – irs.gov will have ‘em online in any event.

Signs are up all over the neighborhood about a missing cat – we thought it was for Tigger, but it turns out the missing kitty is a male named Tiger with similar markings. If it’d been for Ms. Tigs, the postings were well over 2 weeks after she had been adopted. I feel bad for the family with the missing cat – the sign says that the children are distraught. I know I’d be more than very concerned if Newt or Pye got lost.

Less restless last night, though I re-tweaked my back a little. The ol’ spine is much better today, about the same tightness as the night prior. I’d say another week and I’ll not even notice it.

Riddle me this, Batman. If you’ve been at a gig just about 3 weeks, do you sign the sympathy card for someone at the office? I’m right on the cusp of doing so, but I’m not sure if it’d be appropriate.

[Edit: I signed it – kind or sympathetic wishes are rarely a bad idea.]

I was reminded by KE that JM’s position is opening at the county, so I’ve got to get on the stick and get a Maryland Driver’s License. I’m thinking a trip to the MVA this weekend is the way to do it. I did a little parking and turning last weekend, and it’s pretty straightforward.

I’m about 4 days behind in putting my lj entries online – It’s been difficult to do the doogie hauser routine in front of the home-based box with so many other things going on. My Lj will be seven years old in a couple of weeks, and these last few months are the most difficult it’s ever been maintaining daily entries. Of course, when I look back, there’ll still be one a day, every day… just put in the day’s slot nearly a week after the fact.

We do a lot of things here and there, even if it’s just entertaining or being entertained by family & local friends – Little wonder that BHK so seldom updates her own lj. We were in Lusby not too long ago, and we got to talking about CEJ, and to a lesser extent, KTM. I wonder if I’ll ever cross paths with either of ‘em, since I’m pretty much a local, now? We went past a seafood place called the Frying Pan and not a few doors down was the old church that CEJ took several photos of, years ago. If I were more curious, I’d see if I could dig ‘em up on archive.org’s website backups. I think I’d prefer to take my own piccies, anyhow.

Since danigolden gave grindhouse a positive review, I’m re-enthused about seeing it.

Nice crew here at the County – working in the courthouse annex for the last week or so has been nothing but pleasant. Broad variety of issues and concerns, from migrating systems from 2000 to XP to major server concerns. Calvert is blessed to have so many skilled employees in the tech department. There are some politics, but those follow in any place with more than 5 workers. The department as a whole seems quite cohesive, and able to run as a pack. Additionally, it’s a pleasant surprise to see it pretty balanced gender-wise. Most of the tech-rooms I’ve been in have been either heavily male-centric locker rooms, or a mostly female-type library environment. The more balanced, the better it seems to me.

Since I’m temping, I don’t have a lot of security access or the like – my primary duties are getting the phone and setting up service tickets, since I’m still not totally in the loop regarding policy and can’t change many things from my end. I have, however managed to be useful, in addition to doing the standard help desk stuff like talking people through navigation on the file server, power user stuff like outlook or excel questions, and imaging drives for new machines. I would really like to see this gig change to a more permanent position, but that may or may not be happening, depending on what the county wants or needs.

One of the people over in GIS made a comment about snatching me up, too, so there is a possibility of a paradigm shift, I suppose. Mapping software is something I have a knack at, so I figure I could be of utility there.

This gig came at a good time… my savings were getting close to the depletion point, and it’s nice to have the ability to pay the basics off every month, and even maybe recover some a bit.

I have Good Friday off, and maybe that weekend will be a good time to go with BHK to Washington , DC for the cherry blossom festival. (http://www.nationalcherryblossomfestival.org ) I’m way overdue to donate blood, too. Maybe a trip to the Red Cross can happen then, as well. I’d prefer to give platelets, but if I can only do whole blood, that’s fine. I missed the blood drive last weekend due to my cough and my back, and it’d been nagging at me for a while.

St Marys College Campus, originally uploaded by garyfgarcia.

Spring has really Sprung here… I’m used to evergreen Florida , but the shock of things coming back to life really drives the contrast here after a season of winter. There are all sorts of things flowering already – white popcorn-type trees, pink and yellows dotting here and there amongst the yellow-green of fresh shoots and leaves beginning to show. There are still a ton of bare branches out and about, but the blooms are just making things look so awake and alive.

BHK has gotten a real fascination with reality TV in recent months – America ’s top model, American idol, my sweet 16 and that pussycat club thing (I enjoy watching American idol with a group, primarily due to the social factor – I’m not as concerned about the outcome as I am the comparisons and discussion about it). My preferences are more in line with House and The Riches, though the 2nd episode wasn’t as good as the first. Dresden Files is surprisingly entertaining to me too, so far. I’m looking forward to new episodes of Venture Brothers and Hyperdrive – I’m hoping the next season of Dr. Who is better than the last. Heroes, I’m waiting to watch a season at a time, and I tried 24 again, but it wasn’t my thing. Polished off Police Squad on my PSP at lunchtime at work, so my next series in hand will be Red Dwarf and Invader Zim. (I still have the Incredibles on the memory card to fill the little Zefrank synch void left behind. I’m getting better at PSP’s Grand Theft Auto – Liberty City Stories, too.

My time on the Emergency preparedness committee hasn’t been as fruitful as I’d hoped. I fear that for it to be effective, I may have to take charge of it. I really just wanted to be on a team, but if I have to take the bull by the horns, I will. I’d like to plan out an evacuation strategy for North Beach, including how to contact as many people as possible – I’m going to try to push CodeRED notifications through for that, in addition to emails. It’ll cost the city about $5000 a year, but it’d be well worth it. I wonder how much it costs the city to put up a Stop sign, for usefulness comparison.

Newton and Pye are getting along pretty darn good these days… my only complaint is that Pye picks on Newt while he’s trying to eat or use the little box… both of which should be safe zones. Newt is still a bit hissy with Pye, too… it can be hard to tell when he’s playing and when he’s really POed.

Adam’s now on the Tennis team. From what I’ve seen, he’s a great athlete, but really needs to practice in the Tennis Department. Jimmy’s playing too, but I missed seeing his stuff. On the romance front, it seems that Adam and Kendall are going to prom together as ‘more than just friends’.

In-laws are going to Salem next week to work on the house… I wonder if BHK is going to want to visit them there at all for Easter? Tina is planning an Easter dinner with BHK and me, but that’s all I know so far on that front. I’d like to check out the dawn services just to see what North Beach ’s congregation looks like compared to Fort Lauderdale … plus, I do enjoy seeing the sun come up over the bay.

Taking it slow and easy today – back got pretty bad last night, but dr bhk and the nurse-kitties set me to feeling better this morning. Watching movies and internetting are about all I’m up to doing today.

I wonder how much of my cough is from springtime? The plum trees, japanese magnolia (I think) and willows are all ready to rock and roll. BHK brought me some flower seeds for our garden out back.

I just remembered… the best part of 300 was a preview for HOT FUZZ. – it looks great.

Found out bro is living with the girl who sent him to jail, and lied in court to cover her butt. He’s been behaving quite badly since he got out, and I suspect he’ll be back in before we know it. (he got a year’s probation, narrowly dodging 3-5 years in the clink)

BHK and I saw and *really enjoyed* Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon… much better than I’d thought it would be, and held well to mockumentary and the original subject matter’s convention. I suspect it’s not going to be a huge draw though… lucky we caught it on it’s first and possibly last weekend.

Chris and Larry adopted Tigger last night after a marathon shopping at Ikea. My first time there… I enjoyed the odd named stuff and the semi-corporate weirdness. However, we shopped too long, and I got plumb tuckered out. Young Ms. Tigger seems quite happy in her new abode.

Did the devil just shiver? Or was that the White House?

Congress just passed extensive protection for whistle blowers, including scientists who think their work is being suppressed for political reasons:

The House of Representatives today overwhelmingly passed the Whistle blower Protection Enhancement Act, which would, for the first time, grant federal scientists and contractors the right to expose political interference in their research without fear of retribution. The bill passed by a 331 to 94 vote, with 229 Democrats and 102 Republicans voting in favor.

Yeehaw!

But 94 voted against it. Hmmm. Here’s an interesting little tidbit: not one Democrat voted against this bill. Not one.

All 94 nay votes were from Republicans. All of them.

There are currently 233 Democrats and 202 Republicans in the House. That means 4 Dems abstained, both Independents, and 6 Repubs.

Hmmm.

So this bill had essentially 100% support among Democrats, but only about half of the Republicans.

Hmmm.

Are you a Republican? Did your rep vote against this bill? Maybe you have something to say to them.

Events of the day –

I got a short term gig doing help desk for Calvert county. Not the gig I applied for, but it’ll be nice to get some clinking coin while I look for bigger gigs.

Bhk and I hit the McD’s for another round of shamrock shakes! Yum-a-lum-lum.

Almost immediately afterward, we braved the icy rain and went to outback with the in-laws and Louise.

BHK’s finest find at the thrift store was a very clean Paul Frank cap of a monkey riding a John Deere tractor – Was ostensibly for me, and then for us to share, but I think she’s loving it more than me. Pictures to follow.

Watched two new Shows last nigh t- Jeff Goldblum’s new detective bit called Raines… if the pilot is any indication, it’s a far too predictable profiler show. A pity, because I like ol’ JG’s acting stuff, usually. It seems to be too much of a one-trick pony with weakish writing.

Flip side, we also caught The Riches, which wasn’t at all what I was expecting, but I quite enjoyed it. It could’ve been terrible, but the writing and the subject matter was pretty fascinating stuff.

Our Internets are WORKING! As a reward, I pass around a link which I love, despite it being full of old hat. http://www.icanhascheezburger.com/ subtitled cute animals.
