6792 – Offer not good after curfew in sectors R or Q.

Snickers with almonds is very tasty when frozen, but I preferred the chilled tangerine I also had for breakfast. Tasty morsels. I don’t use the word morsel often enough. Or Scrumdiddlyumptious. Ok, ok…I lied, dear journal…. I say scrumdiddlyumptious at least once or twice a month. Though, to make up for the “morsel” imbalance, I also hardly ever say “Oh, snap”.

The soft, spicy odor of incense, wafting in from the corridor between my bedroom and bath brings me calm on hectic days. It’s getting easier for me to realize when I’m tense lately, and once I know that I’m stressed, I can channel that attitude out to make way for more productive behavior.

When I decide to veg out…I usually sit Indian-style or other comfortable position, usually with Newt nearby. I let all the random jetsam spinning around in my mind slowly settle onto the floor of my mind for proper storage or disposal. Sometimes whole books hit the ground when the mental wind slows down, but usually it’s closer to fortune-cookie slips of paper and multi-colored index cards with quickly scrawled information on it, including “continued on card number XXX” written on the bottom. Sometimes the connected card is nearby or someplace that I can retrieve it quickly, other times, it’s probably in one of the piles off in one of the corners.

I picture my mental room as octagonal-shaped, having hardwood floors and highlights, a network of bookshelf-columns radiating out from the center, and glass walls leading up to a covered dome with a skylight on top. Secret Memories of an ancestor that was into trepanation? I don’t see any self-surgery in my future. The amount of light inside reflects my mindset, with thick drapes that could blot out an atomic blast when darkness is absolutely needed.

There are monkeys, too. Or Ghosts. Maybe Monkey Ghosts. That’s it. Probably genetically enhanced… or with some sort of mystic talisman thingie.

Storywise, sometimes I don’t see myself as a main character. It’s easy to fall in the role of support, or walk-on… no limelight, but more like Wilson on Home Improvement, though, if I was to stretch the example, I suppose that I could grab the Al role here and there. I try to be helpful and am mostly soft spoken, a little too off the beaten path to be a primary focus. I suspect that’d change if I was under the same roof with my sweetheart, rather than having us end up being the wacky neighbors.

Then again, there was the Grizzly Adams TV show. Random trivia… Ben the bear was named for Ben Franklin.

6786 – politics, monsters, training

Brother, can you spare a job? A cartoon in classic old style, featuring narrative audio by GWB.

Want to know where I currently stand, politically, dear journal? Well, it’s like this.

The “anyone but Bush” mindset is one I can’t support. I know that I certainly don’t much care for the man… But is Kerry any better? Every time I hear him speak, my opinion of him drops. His only selling point to my mind right now is “well, he’s not Bush”. That’s not valid enough. Is he going to do anything for the environment? I haven’t heard. Stance on big business? I don’t know, for sure. Is he really the lesser of two evils… I don’t have enough quantitative evidence to know. If I played the odds and was forced to pick, it’s *likely* that Kerry’s a better guy, just because Bush’s policies are horrid to my mind… but likely isn’t good enough. I’d like to know one way or the other.

All I’ve seen so far is “Nyah-nyah” crap debate, and it makes me unhappy with any choice that can be made.

Will I vote? Oh yeah. Will I adore who I vote for? Oh, no.

New Citizens Say GOP Took Away Their Right To Choose

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Dario Cruz has lived in the United States for 16 years, but just became a citizen last week as he and about 200 other immigrants were naturalized.

One of the things he had always wanted to was register to vote, but when he was offered the chance to do that right outside the ceremony, he knew something wasn’t right — the place on the form where you’re asked to choose Democrat, Republican or independent was already filled out. Lots of local construction, but I never hear the hammers or workers.
Things just sort of grow here.

Nice Freebie Gothic / horror fonts – also links to classic Eerie Comics. (I actually had the issue with “Swamp Monsters” in it. Warning, may not be safe for the squeamish.

I now work with one of the Florida Marlins, a retired Miami Dolphin, and Kenny Rogers’ brother. Somehow, if we all walked into a bar, there would have to be some kind of wacky punchline at the end.

I have to ask how Kenny feels about the drunken, mentally deficient, kitten-eating MadTV representation of him.(see also, KR’s Jackass – big file, let it buffer a bit)

Woo-hoo! my littler-big-sis hooked me up with a Seal-tooth,a familiar-building method to make use of it, and a lovely-large load of meat for use in KoL. Funzies! Thanks, ldy!

Hooray for Bollywood Torrents! Hum Tum is pretty nifty, for a he-said / she-said sort of movie.

Word of warning… surfing for a website for the above movie gave my mozilla a case of vbs.redlof.a. My Systems combo of Norton Antivirus and MSIE seemingly has immunity, due to caching differences.

According to Wired,

322 municipalities and four states — Alaska, Hawaii, Maine and Vermont — have Patriot Act resolutions… calling on Congress to repeal or change parts of the USA Patriot Act that, activists say, violate constitutional rights such as free speech and freedom from unreasonable search and seizure.

Check to see if your region is one of the 322.

6761 – Socknapper

Man Accused of Stealing Boy’s Socks

COLUMBUS, Ohio – A man accused of grabbing a 9-year-old boy, carrying him behind a Kroger store and stealing his socks has been arrested on kidnapping and robbery charges.

Maurice C. Teague told officers he has more than 500 pairs of children’s socks.

Investigating officers said they couldn’t confirm the number but said they found “a lot” of socks at Teague’s home, police spokeswoman Sherry Mercurio said on Tuesday.

Police said Teague, 28, accosted the boy Friday evening and dropped a piece of identification as he fled. They arrested him at his home on Sunday, Mercurio said. He’s jailed on $75,000 bond.

“It’s odd, obviously — someone going after little boys’ socks,” Detective Guy Patete said.

Police said the child was on his way home from the grocery around 6:30 p.m. when Teague asked to buy his socks for $5. The boy refused again when Teague offered him $10, and Teague picked him up, ran behind the store and pulled the boy’s shoes and socks off his feet.

Police said the boy picked up Teague’s identification and his mother called police. Teague, who has no criminal record, at first denied the account but then admitted grabbing the boy, police said.

6755 – Journey, part 3 – brides, brides everywhere, and not a one to wed

Many women in bridal gowns or the like were there on Saturday. I suspect a photo shoot for a magazine, but there wasn’t a lot of camera technology there.. just handheld cameras, none of those wacky reflector-umbrellas, makeup folks or people with light meters that I saw at the last shoot I witnessed in Fort Lauderdale. Maybe they didn’t need it with all of the natural light as nice as it was? Maybe the production values were just lower. In any event, they added a nice ambiance to the visit.

More Pictures, mostly of women in gowns and gardens

6754 – Journey, part 2 – Vandals, Statues, Lego

O Muse!
Sing in me, and through me tell the story
Of that man skilled in all the ways of contending,
A wanderer, harried for years on end…

Something worth mentioning about the trip of Saturday… It seemed like every common room had large white urns in them, with remains of someone or other inside. It was interesting at first and later became almost the theme of the house, which was fairly ostentatious.. makes Cinderella’s castle look like a grass shack.

I had hoped that the misting garden was open, but it wasn’t.. it’s a great way to cool off if you don’t mind getting a little wet.

6747 – Angry Ghost Rips Worker's Arm Off

A fire extinguisher sprung a leak and shot 12 stories into the air, taking off a construction worker’s arm in a freak accident that prompted his co-workers to pray in order to appease angry spirits.

The accident occurred in a building, in Hong Kong, that many believe to be haunted after a fire eight years ago killed 40 people and injured 81.

Workers were demolishing the Garley Building to make way for a shopping mall when the sudden leak in the fire extinguisher propelled it into the air on Monday.

The 36 year old man who lost his arm, identified only by the surname So, remained in hospital in a serious condition on Wednesday.

Newspapers and television footage showed workers in safety helmets praying on Tuesday in front of a small altar full of incense and food amid the rubble at the demolition site.

Ghost-appeasing rituals, once common in traditional Chinese society, are rare in modern day Hong Kong.

A Reminder from dictionary.com

Q. What is the plural of virus?

A. Viruses.

It is not viri, or (worse) virii. True, the word comes directly from Latin, but not all Latin words ending in -us have -i as their plural. Besides, viri is the Latin word for ‘men’ (plural of vir, “man,” the root of English virile). There is in fact no written attestation of a Latin plural of virus.

If you have some knowledge of linguistics and Latin, you might be interested in the morphological analysis of the word from the Perseus Project.

I *really* like my new clothes. Losing weight is a good thing… I figured it out – Garganticus and Foomy got shorts from George Foreman’s collection at the “Big and Tall” (or Looming and Vast, depending on how far you go… You could put a sharp dress suit on the Hulk right off the rack.)… my new pants and shorts are comfy, and I’m not “lost” in them anymore. It’s nice to have some shorts that fit properly. I picked up a nice linen tunic-looking jersey, too. (For days that I’d like to dress like Barney Rubble) I held back on the Hawaiian shirts…a bit expensive, and wasn’t what I was really there for. Maybe next time. It seems sort of feminine or at least “metrosexual” to be this happy about new clothes, but that’s what’s up. Small pleasures. Man, the prices online are horrid… either that or I stumbled into a lot of good sales.

Bro came by and borrowed a few DVDs. I hope I see them again. Five Deadly Venoms, Tank Girl, Titan AE, MechaGodzilla, and a few others. The only ones I’ll really miss are the badly dubbed kung fu and giant rubber monster movies. Upside, he was clean and pressed… either looking for work, or doing something where he’d have to look non-scrubby, anyhow. I’m happy to see him looking sharp and attentive to detail.

I would really like a multiplayer computer version of Car Wars online, akin to City of Heroes. It’d look a bit like CoH’s Boomtown, I think.

Beautiful Morning today… cool, not humid at all, and just about the perfect temperature.

Rhode Island was in a mood… I suspect that she has either too much or not enough on her plate. She’s got micromanagement all over Newbie. Kahuna is out of town for at least the next two days, so we’ll see how that goes.

What’s Really Visible from Space

There is a longstanding myth that the Great Wall of China is the only manmade object visible from space. It and several variations on the theme are great fodder for water cooler arguments. In reality, many human constructs can be seen from Earth orbit.
