6894 – please vote, and don't eat corpses with wasabe.

via ldy

Fellow Americans, if you haven’t yet registered to vote, or need to re-register due to a change of address or legal name, please go here:

http://moveonpac.org/vote/

Online form. Takes all of two minutes, if that. Seriously.

Print it, sign it, slap a stamp on it (and maybe a piece of tape) and you’re good to go. You don’t even need an envelope.

Do it right now, if you can. Many states have early October deadlines to register. That’s just two weeks away.

If you’re not sure whether or not you’re registered, you’re probably not. Register again.

I don’t care whether we’re voting for the same guy or not.

Just register and vote, k?

It ain’t a right, it’s a responsibility.

Thanks.

Also, For people without printers: 7-11 stores are carrying piles of voter registration forms.

American citizens overseas who need to request absentee ballots can get information on how to do that (including the standard federal form to request them) at http://www.fvap.gov/ – that site will point you to state election sites for voters in the US.

6869 – Tuesday Morn…

Broward PSA

All Broward County Public Schools will remain CLOSED Tuesday, September 7, 2004 as restoration efforts from Hurricane Frances continue. Students, teachers and other school-based instructional staff should NOT report to the schools. Principals and Assistant Principals should report to their respective schools.

District offices and facilities WILL reopen tomorrow. All full-time District employees, including administrative and supervisory, clerical, maintenance and facility service employees should report to their normal work locations. All food service employees should report to their respective work locations as well.

The decision was made to keep the schools and offices closed for another day because of the power outages that persist at several dozen District schools, along with potential hazards to children presented by downed power lines, busy intersections where traffic signals are not operating due to power outages and storm debris that may prompt children to walk in the street to school and bus stops. There is also a concern with the ongoing restoration efforts involving the use of chainsaws and heavy vehicles to cut up and haul away downed trees and branches, as well as the major operation by Florida Power & Light Company to restore electricity to the area.

An additional issue involves scattered sewage and water disruptions throughout the county as the result of power outages. Pumping stations and sewage treatment facilities have been impacted, causing some sewage backups, sporadic water service and boil water orders.

Students, parents and District employees should monitor the District’s Web site at browardschools.com, call the District’s Rumor Control Hotline at 754-321-0321 or monitor local media for updated information regarding the status of the schools.

scottodoodle – Regular Scotto-Entry –

Ah, how nice to sleep in my own bed. It’s been a long few days. Thank goodness I didn’t go to a shelter… I would have gone totally insane. I’m very thankful. The funny thing about hurricane Frances was how many “experts” came out of the woodwork.. like they all have a direct line to Thor/Zeus/Mamma Nature. I wonder how the homeless folks did, under bridges or other semi-public cover? Bro did ok, as did the Mother.

Ivan 5-day Tracking – Ack. D&J may have a houseguest again. I’m not officially worried yet.

Yum… fresh oranges. Nice breakfast, and for some reason, I rarely get ’em. Tasty, and good to eat in the middle of the night as a snacky-snack.

Off to work after a quick phone call…Let’s see how things go. Power was off at the company building earlier, so I may go to an off-site location (probably Big Kahuna’s house) to continue. I *think* RI is off this week.

I love the fourth piccie of Newt. He’s got a little Santa beard! (he caught a light-monster in his jaws.)

Freeware replacements for commonly warez’ed programs

I use openoffice and it’s excellent. I’m going to make a point of sniffing around phpEDIT and SharpDevelop

If you’re not in the mood for useful utilities, there’s these nifty games. (many are decent clones of $$ games) I’ve dug FreeCiv for a while now… good to fall back on when between other games. There’s a palm version in the works too! (hasn’t been updated since June ’04. ouch!)

As always, check for spyware!

America’s Army looks really nifty… I’m pulling that down tonight.

My noggin was throbbing for about two of the days… I suspect it was the pressure change, and my general cabin fever-ness.

I’m really looking forward to The Incredibles.

Good team. A stretchy, a brick, a speedster, invisi-forcefields, ice… looks like what little I’ve seen is well-written, too.

Dear M. Night Shyamalan,

It seems you can’t make a good movie without Bruce Willis. Call him back for the next flick you make. I loved 6th sense, and Unbreakable.

Signs and The Village, while having good bits in the middle at times, had poo endings.

Turn Gmail storage into a mountable file system

GmailFS provides a mountable Linux file system which uses your Gmail account as its storage medium. GmailFS is a Python application and uses the FUSE userland file system infrastructure to help provide the file system, and libgmail to communicate with Gmail.

GmailFS supports most file operations such as read, write, open, close, stat, symlink, link, unlink, truncate and rename. This means that you can use all your favorite Unix command line tools to operate on files stored on Gmail (e.g. cp, ls, mv, rm, ln, grep etc. etc.).

Cool.

Woo! I got my check from Google Adsense! Good deal, I wasn’t totally ripped off, after all. A lot of little financial windfalls lately!

Mike from Satan’s Laundromat photographs Critical Mass bicycle riders getting arrested Friday night and finds himself arrested and in jail overnight.

“they suddenly decided to start making arrests without warning, penning people in and arresting entire blocks’ worth of people, including hapless tourists and people getting off work who just happened to be in the area watching. And they couldn’t have been bothered to clean the diesel sludge off the floor of the holding pens where they made us sleep? Someone will pay.”

I hope *somebody* catches hell for that.

I’m glad to see that Cap’n Pete in Disney’s Three Musketeers cartoon has gone back to having a peg leg. Of course, the novel itself is public domain and available online. (you can always download and print it out if you prefer text on dead trees.)

It’s also the origin of GrayPumpkin & Katt’s little cow-kitty’s name. D’Art! (The first Kitty I was ever really social with.)

Hmm… Hurricane Frances travel projection looks like it’s headed this way, around midday Saturday. A lot can happen over the course of a week, but I’d wager it’ll hit the states *somewhere*.

6829 – snippets and bites

Well, no dice getting together with the oneeyed and the gang… one of their number wanted to return home once the power was on, so it’ll have to be next time. Maybe I’ll take a day-trip north to see the Edison / Ford Estates and lunch their neck of the woods! I’m glad they made it home ok, and that there was very little personal damage waiting for them.

Bro scammed the Mother out of about $150, claiming it was court costs. Lawyer said there were none, and Bro claims there wasn’t any receipt. Liar. That dumbass burned that bridge, now, too.

I convinced the PR department to not do Donkey Basketball as a fund raiser. Plenty of other fun ways to bring people together and donate money… no need to bring any animal cruelty or PETA picketers to the table.

Apparently T-Mobile was giving away free service all hurricane weekend. Good for you guys! You deserve some praise for that!

I fell asleep far too early last night, something like seven or so… I think I was fatigued from all of the stress over the missing Alabama boy. We were really scrambling the whole time I was at the office

I woke up at about 2:30am, got a drink of water and puttered for about an hour before trying to go back to bed. I really am a night person at heart… That was one of the nice things about IMT – the 4pm to midnight schedule.

Wow… Friday already. this week was nuts. I’m on call much of the weekend, but I managed to hand a good chunk of Sunday off, though 4-7 I have to be on top of things. No major walkabout, it seems. I think I’ll do the Wolfsonian, the week after.

Bro’s case yesterday was just a calendar call. he’s on one hour notice for a hearing that should take place sometime next week. Apparently Andy was there, smelling of beer and looking rough, bro was clean and in a tie.

We’ll see what that week brings. He hasn’t been terribly communicative lately.

So far, my ad-links are paying about $90-100 a month on average, all told. I’m amazed… this is almost as good as what designers in there were making about six months ago. I don’t know how long it’ll last, but I’ll happily take the money until they decide to stop paying me.

I notice that all of my adsense links are for public service items today… a result of the hundred dollar hump?

6787 Mango / Spyware / Pi Approximation / Look out.

Dang. It’s obviously mango season again. They’re hanging fat on any tree that hasn’t been harvested yet. I imagine every office in the city has someone bringing in grocery bags full of ’em, pulled of before they can be allowed to rot on the ground…They have been known to make the local birds and other small animals drunk when the fruit is consumed after fermenting in the sun for a few days.

That puts me in the mood for a tropical fruit salad… maybe some mango/banana/lime/coconut.

I won’t go into what a raging mango is. Them that know, know.

New Tech seems ok, so far. Intelligent, but I worry that along with that comes a fundamental laziness. He reminds me a bit of my old buddy ramscan, in that he’s quiet and laid back, but once you open him up, he seems nice, and likely lot deeper than you might see on the surface.

My good deed of the day – (figured I’d share, after helping 3 people pull if off systems yesterday.)

I’m on call this week… and need to find another person or two we can hire to help take up the slack when the Kahuna’s out of town.

Doc agreed with the specialist… I called to start the wheels in motion for a time for my surgery. I’ve also been discussing the idea seriously about buying a condo. I figure that even if I don’t keep it, I’m all for putting my rent toward equity rather than just in some other person’s pocket. The consultant I talked to said that I can comfortably work out a regional one at about $125k on my income and credit. If I decide to turn it around and sell it later, I should make a tidy profit, too.

Random mental wandering.

I’ve almost always dwelled near a large body of water, usually the shore of Atlantic Ocean. Between growing up near Cape Cod (note to self, write about the cranberry bogs sometime) and the summering in Florida Keys, I’d say that the furthest I’ve lived from the ocean was when we were in Alexandria, Virginia. (Even then, we were right on the Potomac, a *DANG COLD* river, even in the summer, if memory isn’t exaggerating over time.) Contrary to popular belief, I’ve never had a residence under a bridge, in order to eat passing goats or unwary travelers unwilling to pay a toll.

I remember folks being really afraid of the beach when Jaws came out. I was only about six years old, but the killer-shark hysteria was amazingly high. All of those shore-bound places where I’ve lived naturally had a significant amount of tourism by the beach, and the year that movie was released, the visitors began acting even more irrational than usual. Lots of folks were too frightened to even walk along the water… somehow, some way, a ravenous, blood-lustful, twenty-foot man-eating fish with triple rows of pearly white and razor sharp teeth was going to leap onto shore, grab them, emit a long, deep, haunting laugh of pure aquatic evil, and finally bite ’em in half, twelve feet away from where the water stops and the sand begins. The real telling element was how you could see people scanning the surface of the water, looking for that one dorsal fin that spelled total carnage for the poor victim splashing, flailing and generally having fun fooling in the “deep end.”

I figured they were *looking* for a monster to get them. Having spent enough time by the water, I was pretty aware of sharks, and knew something about their behaviors and mannerisms. I knew there was the merest likelihood of being attacked by a shark, even smaller by a colossal great white. Even in recent years, when there’s been a notable increase in the number of attacks along the East coast, the amount of them is still tiny. I had no fear of being attacked by a shark when I went into the water. Sure, if I saw them, I’d get out, but it’s not something that gave me pause. I had more immediate things to worry about: man-o-war stings, and mean ol’ crabs that pinched your toes if you stepped on them by accident Most worrisome was the undertow.. my brother’s surfing drove that point home one time when I was about sixteen, and he got pulled out really fast. I’m glad that my dad was a strong swimmer and was able to recover him quickly. I didn’t even realize he’d gone that far until dad was out there calling to him.

That said, I can’t remember the last time I went diving, surfing, or swimming in water more than chest deep. Perhaps that’s overdue. I’d like to float out and around Red Reef Park for a bit. I’d like to see some stuff from the snorkel perspective.

Again, this year, It’s October, and I’ve heard nothing about Oktoberfest (which generally starts in the last half of September). On researching, it looks like I missed it this past weekend. Ah well, there’s always Bavarian Village.

Speaking of the season, a good story from a couple of years ago – increasing mobile phone usage is destroying ghosts, possibly through the disruption of electromagnetic fields that would otherwise be causing lightweight hallucinations. But why would it be disrupting them, rather than strengthening them? Why aren’t we getting more ghost sightings and flying saucers and unexplained senses of presence, now that the air we walk through is thick with wireless transmission? Continue reading

I still feel free use the term “fairer sex”, because as a whole, I do find women to be more pleasing to the eye than men. If politically correct monkeys don’t like it, they can lump it. On looking up fair maid, I think definition two is rather comical. I may yet use that in the future.

I’m looking forward to this… Apparently it’s running trailer son Finding Nemo (when you can get there in a timely manner). The Incredibles – Pixar. Oh, you can bet I’m looking forward to it. Pixar supers! I notice that the music is like a slower version of OHMSS.

Also, Columbia Pictures has bought the rights to Marvel Comics’ most famous black superhero, Luke Cage. Ben Ramsey (THE BIG HIT) will write the adaptation of the long-running character. Luke Cage is a former gang member from Harlem that is framed by his best friend and sent to federal prison on drug charges. While in prison, Cage volunteers for a medical experiment that ultimately gives him super strength and bulletproof skin. Using the new powers, Cage escapes and becomes Luke Cage: Hero for Hire. Avi Arad will produce for Marvel Studios. I wonder who could play him well? As long as it’s not Will Smith, I’m cool. What about Iron Fist? Luke Wilson would be horrid, yet well cast, I think.

Sweet Christmas!

There’s a weakness in my heart for zombie movies…I hope 28 days later is good. I’ve heard some positive things already.

COMFORT TV OR COMFORT BOOKS?

Comfort books, unless I’m too tired to even read, but unable to get to sleep. (Which happens a lot when I’m in need of comfort.) Cartoon Network, Discovery, and History Channel work wonders.

WHAT COLOR IS YOUR FAVORITE SHIRT?

My current favorite shirt is a black white and red Tie-dyed “Pirates of the Caribbean” shirt I got from Disney world back in 2000. It’s comfy, has hippy and pirate context, and reminds me of a lovely little vacation.

DO YOU WRITE? IF SO, WHAT DO YOU OVERUSE?

I write, and probably rely too much on detail of the area rather than cutting to the point of the story. Too much scenery. (It’s the first thing I start trimming.)

BAND YOU HATE MOST?

Any that’s playing too loud outside my bedroom window. I really like all sorts of music.

PUNK IN DRUBLIC?

Nah, I don’t even drink all that much in private.

DUDE, I CAN’T *BELIEVE* PEOPLE…
Worry so much about the opinions of strangers with no apparent knowledge about what they’re talking about. I’m concerned with opinions of folks that matter to me, and professionals in the field…not Joe Blow off the street. (Even most professionals don’t matter to me, either, honestly.) The opinion of someone I know and respect however is very valuable.

FIRST BOOK I REMEMBER READING ALL BY MYSELF.
I can’t recall much of my very young childhood, but an issue of Spidey Super Stories (a kids comic cross-promoted on The Electric Company television show.) Sometime in the early 70s. Easy Reader was in it, and Spidey was fighting the Lizard, while Spidey teamed up with Easy Reader to fight the Vanisher. (Edit) In fact, after a little googling, I just found a picture. April 1975 issue (so I was about 6 years old), picked up at the grocery store. I’m sure there were books before that, but that one stands out in my mind because I bought it with my own money and made a point of reading it on my own. There was a teenage-girl named “Thumper” who likes to dress like Napoleon Bonaparte and uses a boxing glove she hides in her vest to whack people in the back of their head when they’re not looking. Her origin? “When the Thumper didn’t get a Yellow Pony for her birthday… she got very angry and turned to crime. Dressed as the great French Hero Napoleon, the Thumper looks for someone to Thump.” It was something very close to along those lines.

Hmm. You know, I hear that’s the exact same origin Mysterio originally had. Except replace the line about ‘someone to Thump’ with ‘someone to try desperately to frighten with rubber bats’.

I’ve come to a conclusion. Morgan Freeman must reprise his role as Easy Reader in the next Spidey movie.

I need to go to a comic book store and pick up a copy of this just to have again. Three Villains, Lizard, Thumper, and Vanisher. Pretty good for a kid’s comic. 35¢ well spent.

the comic in question

Yup… my g: drive is just about toast. It keeps saying that it’s been removed. It could be the cable, but I doubt it as the machine hasn’t been moved very much. Next time it comes back up, I’m mirroring it over to f… I hope that it snaps back long enough to do so. Fortunately, I’ve only been using it primarily for just kazaa and temporary games.

The G: was the last remaining part from Astley’s old “gray market” machine, short of the case. It was only a matter of time. I’ll replace it with a bigger HD as a self-gift this coming holiday.

Poor Dave is banned from getting any more toy soldiers to play mage knight with me, at least for the time being…which I think is fine. We both have more than enough pieces to play a big honking battle, plus we’ve been trading amongst ourselves to our mutual benefit. (I’m not planning on getting any more myself, unless something really amazing comes out in the next expansion… like pirate ships or something.)

Little knot on my skull seems to be ok… sore to the touch, but the swelling has gone mostly down, and I don’t notice it unless I run a finger over it.

I’ve discovered that whenever ER is on, it’s always about the abandoned little Russian girl. I can’t say that I’ve ever seen any other episode, though I’ve run over this one about five times.

The Accexpo is coming soon…I thought it was thanksgiving weekend, but it looks like it’s the weekend before now. It looks like they need volunteers.. maybe I’ll take on a shift for free tickets. Security or door monitor is easy work, and you get some lovely perqs… free t-shirt and all. The gaming schedule has very little listed…the Marvel heroclix and mage knight head to head looks like the only things there that tickle my fancy, thus far.

Ok, enough lollygagging…off to work. See you later, dear journal.
