Got the night wrapped up

Going to the Salty Dog pub up the street and partake in a beer or two, with some nachos. Time with Ray and Robbo was nice… looks like Robb’s moving to Seattle sometime before thanksgiving, and Ray’s getting on well with Rose, his GF.

Saw get carter, and it was pretty ok, if rather choppy and conveluted. Saw Cowboy blues with Ray, and it was quite good! excellent soundtrack.

Nobody wants to go out late tonight, Robb needs to work on his proj, and Ray’s spending time with the girlie. Suzy’s sleeping, getting ready to drive the cab at 6am. Who knows… maybe I can gab with folks at the bar. It’s saturday night.

Scotto’s plans for immediate future

a few things.

1. out to supper and maybe see the exorcist with Robby
2. spend some time with Suzy?
3. sleep with the weirdling gear on
4. bring poor Cathi a care package for her cold.
5. play with Newtie
6. wrap Kevin’s birthday present.
7. give Kev his present!
8. spend time with little bro

hey! apple jacks are now in pink and green! when did that happen? weren’t they originally all pink?

also. Newt likes apple jacks!

They don’t taste like apples, but we eat what we like!

Freedom.

Went to Suzy’s hearing today, and it started off bad… but the end results were good… she’s going home today, with a reinstatement of her probation. Did she learn anything from this? Nope, I don’t think so. I, however, learned that our court systems are incredibly lenient, and that odds are good that the innocent are very unlikely to be crimed for things they did not commit…. as are criminals who did do something, you really have to be able to prove that the bad guy did something. I’m not saying all of our laws are good, or even valid… but if you break the law, someone has to try very hard to get you in trouble for it. (apparently there are a lot of people trying very hard, though… look at our prisons!)

Anyhow. Suzy free (as free as probation, anyhow.)

no more collect calls from jail, or taking messages for her friends. (so called…. they wouldn’t even visit.)

I’m guessing she should be back in a cab, driving, by next Monday.

As for myself, I suppose going to the DMV, getting a new photo ID was a good thing… I can now not get bothered when cashing my check, and so on.

Talked to the brother last night. Going with him to a new gym on Sunday.. I’ll be ready for some serious working out, now that he’s joining me. I look forward to being stronger, healthier, and looking a little better than I’ve been lately.

Yipes

boom, boom, chicka-boom boom.

good day, fellow LJers! The sun is shining, the sky is blue, and someone in my parking lot lis blaring some badly transmitted bass (the musical tones, not the fish) through concrete into our office. yech.

Sending someone outside to take care of it now.

Getting prepared for visit to prison tomorrow… if her hearing goes well tomorrow, she’ll be out on friday… if it goes as expected, she’ll get 7 months, out in 5. if it goes poorly, she’ll get up to a year (one of the tickets was kicked out…) I’ll be glad when she’s out, if only to put a cap on the collect calls from jail I get…(at $2.50 minimum to start, at least 2x a day…for almost 3 weeks now… it adds up)

Ahh.. the booming has stopped. 🙂 good job, Bheesham. (the guy who told bass-man to get quiet.)

Anyhoo… to work, and some veggie dogs… maybe taco bell if I can convince Pixie next door to run and get it. 🙂

OH! Donated blood this am…I’m going to start keeping my tally here, if I remember to. (I’m officially at over 10 gallons! They gave me a nice certificate and stuff.) one of the best things about going in every 2 weeks is that you really get to know everybody, and all the keen freebies you get… for doing charity, I get tshirts, frequent flyer miles, free lunches, and the adoration of several nurses. A good gig. I highly reccomend it.

Another day, another $.34 (after taxes.)

woo. Or even Wu! (Doug, that is) harper #1 in my book, and all around swell guy apparently called danny up last night, giving out his new phone number… sadly, he either doesn’t have the line hooked up yet, or some other weirdness is causing conection trouble. but rest assured that we’ll hear from him soon.

I have no plans for saturday…what to do. maybe just have a rest? my forward week is looking busy, update ID, take car eof a few bills for Suzy while she’s in the pokey, birthday goodies for Derek & Kevin. I should spend some time with Danny and Ray this weekend, I really haven’t spoken to Ray since oh, maybe a month or so ago. Perhaps Saturday will be good for that.

reviews on the googly eyed scotto are mixed… I think I’ll save it for ‘surprised or hyper’ moods when I get my paid account.

Doing a contract job for food for the poor. I have mixed feelings about feeding people overseas when there are hungry folks in my city. Is it wrong to want things better locally first, and then spread out from there? Another tactic is to hit the hungriest first, and go to the less hungry, I suppose… but how does a person calulate that sort of stuff? “Well, 1000 people died here last week… only 800 in haiti died.” The economy of human life is a difficult one for me to calculate. Is it wrong to feed the hungry at all? Opposing nature? (Don’t look at me, I’m totally in favor of good works… and opposing nature. If I wasn’t all my friends with glasses would be much worse off, not to mention the my back, athsmatics, and other ‘defectives’)

hey again!

Pretty much just waiting on the judgement on Suzy’s case. A little worried. I got a letter from April last night… explained a few things, and I’m glad she’s getting her head in order.

weirdness in technology right now, my email is echoing big time from egroups, all my mailing list stuff is landing in 2 or three of my bins at once. bah.

getting an employee at work repremanded for surfing porn at work. tsk.

Back to work! ::whip crack::

Sakes. Didn’t I just leave?

New info on Suzy, she has her hearing tomorrow, with a Judge that’s apparently not very ‘probation-friendly’. From the sound of it, she could lose her apartment, her car, and her job if she spends a considerable amount of time in jail. Right now, the figuring is about 9 months, mostly for breaking probation. Her Hearing is 8:30 am tomorrow, where she’s going to try and push the next hearing forward, in the hopes a different Judge will get her and show more mercy than her current one… getting rid of her lawyer and going with a puvlic defender should allow her to move the schedule along. I was talking with pals over at worldwide, and they think that she should get a ‘real’ attorney. Unfortunately, those cost some $$$… looks like a $5000 retainer is in order. I can’t help her there, as I’m not packing that sort of liquid assets. More to follow tomorrow after the first hearing.

JAILS VS. PRISONS

JAILS

Jails are most often run by local governments and/or sheriffs.

Jails hold individuals who are awaiting trial or are serving short sentences. In Florida, inmates sentenced to serve 364 days or less, serve that time in jail.

Jails have a short average length of stay. Some admissions are for a few hours. Other pre-trial detainees are held for several years awaiting their trial. For that reason, the “average length of stay” data is skewed.

Jails must be able to accommodate all arrestees from those charged with misdemeanors to violent criminal offenders. For that reason, most jails are designed as maximum custody facilities.

Jails must provide all ranges of medical and mental health services, and be able to handle any medical emergency. It is estimated that 12% to 18% of jail admissions in the United States are individuals with acute or chronic mental illness.

Jails operate work release programs, boot camps, and other specialized services. They try to address education needs, substance abuse needs, and vocational needs while managing inmate behavior. Inmate idleness contributes to management problems.

Jails try to link departing inmates with services in their local communities such as veterans’ programs, AIDS/HIV counseling and treatment, and mental health counseling.

There are approximately 3,600 jails in the United States. The Broward Sheriff’s Office currently maintains three major facilities: the North Broward Detention Center, the Main Jail and the Division of Community Corrections. The number of beds in the entire system currently is 3,730. The average daily population is 4,300. When the new Joseph V. Conte facility opens, 1,024 beds will be added.

The BSO jail system is the 13th largest local jail system in the United States. It is one of only 3% of the local jails in the United States to have earned accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation for Corrections.

The federal government also operates several “jails” across the country which hold persons awaiting trial in federal court. The Federal Bureau of Prisons’ Miami Correctional Center is such a facility. All branches of the military also operate jails (brigs) to hold military personnel prior to court marshall.

PRISONS

Prisons are operated by state governments and the Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP). Prisons are designed to hold individuals convicted of crimes.

Most prison facilities are exclusively either maximum, medium, or minimum custody facilities. Rarely are inmates with different classification levels mixed in the same facility.

State prison systems operate halfway houses, work release centers and community restitution centers — all considered medium or minimum custody. Inmates assigned to such facilities are usually reaching the end of their sentences.

Prisons are much different than jails. The constant turnover of inmates in a jail doesn’t happen in a prison. Prisons offer programs designed to rehabilitate inmates. About 97% of inmates committed to a state prison will eventually return to the community.

rules for visiting people in jail

Visiting, Writing & Phoning Inmates

Visiting Rules & Regulations:
Accommodations are made for one 2-hour visit per week. Visiting days and hours vary according to the BSO jail facility. Inmates are informed of visiting days and hours and are responsible for relaying this information to those who wish to visit them.

Due to limited visiting space, only two adults or one minor supervised by a parent may visit during the weekly visiting period.
Photo identification — such as a driver’s license, military identification, passport or state-issued ID card — must be presented by each adult visitor. Visitors who do not have proper identification will not be permitted to visit.
Visitors must be appropriately dressed. Shoes, shirts and appropriate underclothing must be worn. Visitors wearing suggestive clothing, transparent fabric, short-shorts or mini- skirts will not be permitted to visit.
Visitors under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian who must present either a birth certificate or court documentation showing appointment of legal guardianship. Minors must be supervised at all times by the parent or legal guardian.
Visitors must remain in the assigned visiting room/area during the visit and will be denied further visitation if determined to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
Visitors may not give anything to — or take anything from — an inmate.
Proper behavior of all visitors is required.

Yikes.

Pay your tickets, folks.

My pal Suzy, who is a cab driver (was a cab driver, I’m guessing now.) went to her cab today, on her way to drive me to work. Two policemen were waiting for her, and took her to jail for unpaid parking tickets. She was warned numerous times, but apparently one squeaked by, and she got nailed for it. She’s guaranteed a minimum of 10-14 days of jail time while she waits until the judge has time to see her plead her case, and then (due to her past record) she might end up spending between 90 days to 15 years in jail.

I have mixed feelings about this. I’m concerned for her even though I know she’s safe in holding right now, so I’m not overly concerned about her physical well-being. When I talked to her on the phone (I had the honor of being her call, since Her other pal only has a cell phone. Can’t call those from Florida jails. I hope that this will teach her a lesson, albeit a harsh one. I hope she gets tested for drug use while she’s there, ideally so she can clean up her act, if it isn’t already. (I suspect that she’s using, but don’t know)… also it’ll be good to maybe scare some sense into her.

While she’s in lockup, someone has to start and stop her car a few times a week to keep the engine form seizing, and we have to make sure her rent gets paid so she’ll have an apartment to come home to. (she lives in an efficiency, and pays week to week) Not only that, but I get to call her mom, dad and sibs to raise $$$ for a lawyer and commissary. (commissary is like a px, or store when you’re in jail… trust me, you need it) Jail isn’t free for prisoners, they have to pay for uniforms, meals, and etc, either immediately or at the end. (usually a combination of the two)

I was totally not expecting these extra responsibilities. I’m sorry, Brad, but it’ll be another month before I can have a paid membership here. It also looks like I’m going to be tossing some bucks to the judicial system in the next some weeks. ow. September birthdays are going to be leaner this year too. (By the way, it’s the day after Suzy’s birthday today! Nice Present! )

Know something people. Save your money, because if you live paycheck to paycheck, you can get knocked totally off-course. Seriously, have something to fall back on. Try your best to save 5% of your paycheck, at least. Worst case, you’ll have money in the bank when you need it, best case, you can retire comfortably.

Next few installments, how to get a bail bondsman, how to visit people in prison, how jail is *not* like the TV show Oz, How it *is* like Oz, and why Scotto associates with known felons.

I’m not sure how busy I’ll be the next few weeks, and how often I’ll be updating, but I’ll certainly be doing it all from work, so I can keep the phone free. (I can take incoming phone calls… but the net doesn’t deal with call waiting.. just ignores it, so I’ll be offline evenings.)

Flibbertogibbet.

Not been very into posting today… not had anything of value to eat, as I’m brokebrokebroke. 2 cookies from the PD plate at work, and lots of water. I will be so happy when payday comes. I brought myself up short this week, but fortunately, Danny will be buying me breakfast tomorrow, and I get paid at 12:30 tomorow, so I should be back on track. I overextended myself by loaning $$ to Suzy, which she’ll pay back by giving me rides into work the next little while.

Scott mopes a little…

I don’t know what it is, but it seems I attract friends that are super-transient. I don’t think I’m going to chum up with computer programmers anymore especially as I’ve had the worst luch with them moving off to Texas, California, and other points west, near places with deserts. Ray & Kathleen, Alex, Jim, and no doubt, shortly (when leases are up?) Robb, Brian, and Heather (If she and Brian can keep it together. I’m pretty surprised it’s lasted this long… maybe she needs to marry a guy, before relationships start to fragment? Maybe Brian was what she needed? Who knows? I’m happy if they’re happy, and I’ll be saddened when it they go through what I feel is the inevitable breakup.) I’m very fortunate to have a few friends that are more securely anchored. Danny, Dave, Cathi are solid… Suzy’s good, but more needy on that spectrum.
