According to identity management firm Cyber-Ark’s annual ‘Trust, Security & Passwords’ survey, a whopping 88% of IT administrators would steal CEO passwords, customer database, research and development plans, financial reports, M&A plans and the company’s list of privileged passwords if they were suddenly laid off. The survey also found that one third of IT staff admitted to snooping around the network, looking at highly confidential information, such as salary details and people’s personal emails.

9407 – Friday

Hell of a long day at work, but BHK and I started to make her Birthday weekend roll with dinner out at Saigon Palace for dinner. We’d never been there before, so it was a bit of an adventure… Our traveler’s luck served us well this time:

0822082136.jpg. 0822082057.jpg

The place was pretty empty for a Friday night… food was delicious and our servers very attentive and friendly. I’ll happily go back there again and again – lots of veggie goodies to try, and the Pho will be super come colder months ahead. (I got the bird’s nest, bhk got the lemon tofu. I think she won, but mine was mighty tasty, too!)

Hopefully this puts us on a solid roll toward Birthday goodness!

Ray Bradbury is 88! Happy birthday, one time great writer, now crotchety old guy! Dandelion Wine is still my one of my all-time faves. Thanks for that… I wouldn’t have a lime-vanilla ice, otherwise.

In an online survey, 42 percent of Internet users admitted to logging into other people’s email and social networking accounts without their knowledge. The poll doesn’t ask if passwords were found, granted, or stolen — which would make for further interesting results. The write-up summarizing the results defines the respondents as part of an “educated tech-readership” and questions the ethics of logging onto someone else’s account, and whether those differ depending on the person and relationship.”

Magpies can recognize themselves in a mirror, confounding the notion that self-awareness is the exclusive preserve of humans and a few higher mammals. It had been thought only four species of apes, bottlenose dolphins, and Asian elephants shared the human ability to recognize their own bodies in a mirror. But German scientists reported on Tuesday that magpies, a species with a brain structure very different from mammals, could also identify themselves. It had been thought that the neocortex brain area found in mammals was crucial to self-recognition. Yet birds, which last shared a common ancestor with mammals 300 million years ago, don’t have a neocortex, suggesting that higher cognitive skills can develop in other ways.

Had the blues, went for a walk on the boardwalk, took some pictures of flowers and crabbers, napped, watched some tube, had veggie cheeseburgers and salad with chocolate mousse for dessert! yum. Grocery shopping, watched dr who, and first ep of primeval…I liked the end of the dr who 2-parter (He’s a professor at a school in 1913, and is in deep cover…unknown even to himself.)… but the punishments went by pretty swiftly.

My blues have mostly faded now… I’m a bit exhausted but doing ok.

meme swiped from eryx_uk

01. How has LJ changed your life?
Got me married to the wonderful and love of my life BHK and introduced to friends both new and thought to be long lost.

02. What do you do before bedtime?
watch some tube, play a board game or read

03. What are you going to have for dinner tonight?
We had burgers and salad! yum!

04. What is the ONE place you want to go before you die if you had the money and the time?
I’m pretty open to traveling and experiencing new things.. I have no one place I must see… but I want to see as much as I can!

05. What scares you?
The thought of hurting others, even accidentally.

06. What do you do in your free time?
Walkabout with BHK, playing games both digital and analog, relaxing

07. If you could speak another language (meaning one you currently don’t know), what would it be?
I’d love to be fluent in German, so I could talk more effectively to relatives overseas.

08. What personal belonging do you have with you everywhere you go?
I take a lot of stuff with me, but the most personal is either a gold $1 coin or the pressed penny.

09. What was your favorite song or musical group when you were young?
Definitely a Beatles kid, but if young counts as high school (sophomore – 1985) than I’d lean to They Might Be Giants or Maybe the Talking Heads.

10. Are you a risk taker?
Depends on the risk. I won’t bet my life on things, but I’ll venture a gamble here and there. Not generally.

11. Is being tagged fun?
It depends on the tagger, and expectations thereof. It can be!

12. Where do you see yourself in ten years?
Nearly 50. Hopefully still surrounded by loving family, and perhaps more friends that are local.

13. If you could be anyone for one day, who would you be?
I’d like to try being who I am based on what other people think I might be for a day. Depending on who is looking at me… big, sweet guy? evil thug?

14. What kind of person do you think the person who tagged you is?
No one tagged me. I nabbed the meme myself. Eryx is a nice guy and I’d like to meet him in person someday.

15. Would you rather be single & rich or married but poor?
As long as I’m married to BHK, I prefer married.

16. How many children do you want to have, if any?
I have no idea.

17. Is reality objective or subjective?
Objective, but some may *think* it’s subjective.

18. If you fall in love with two people simultaneously, who would you pick?
What does that even mean? The one on the left? The one I’d be more likely to get along with in the long run? Heck if I know.

19. Would you have 100% safe sex with a stranger for $10,000,000?
Not likely. That’s too weird a scenario for me to buy into. Besides, I’m married!

20. What is your favorite color?
Rust-orange at the moment.

9385 – Sunday

Off to a slow-pokey start today – I think we got out the door at something like noonish. BHK and I went on a little journey to St. Michael’s, primarily to hit the maritime museum we missed last visit.

The place is a good bit of land to walk over… thankfully, much of it is inside and nicely air-conditioned. I liked the sense of humor that a lot fo the exhibits had… some fairly off-color quotes about sailors and fishemen. I wasn’t totally wowed by the place – one visit was good, but I don’t think that I have any great need to return.

The Solomon’s Island Museum is a lot smaller, but they have River Otters (Two- Bubbles and Squeak) on site, which is very tough to compete with.

In fact, I think that BHK and I had more fun seeing the occasional wild squirrel, duck or jackrabbit than the exhibits.

Headed home, once we were appropriately sun-baked. Sundown on the bridge. We stopped at Holly’s Restaurant for a little nibble that turned into a massive pile of food. I’d say the big win there was the cream of crab soup… french fries were a little soggy, and were the weak link.

Pictures from the trip – at flickr – for st. peter’s church and bunnies and duckies and cute little squirrels eating pine cones and sunsets and bhk trapped in a sailboat thingie and my head being pinched by a crab claw and the ATW man looking all scary.

9339 – Sunday –

Spent the bulk of the day moving in our new couch, shelves and end tables – our house is looking more like a home and less like a dorm every day.

Mom contacted me re: my bro – it comes as no surprise (somewhat like agent “!”.) – got to add another link to the mugshot page.

(Agent ! –

Known otherwise only as “Malcolm,” a homeless man who dressed in a garish outfit decorated with exclamation marks (possibly referencing his predecessor, the Quiz) drawn back to reveal his chest is actually a gilded cage containing a miniature jet with bird-like feet. Despite his odd appearance, he “comes as no surprise,” which allows him and anyone around him to be unnoticed or any attacks made by them to be seemingly out of nowhere. He mentions his desire to find the element of surprise, which may mean that his powers of “stealth” are not what he wants; Malcolm finds the element at last when dying during the final battle between the Brotherhood and the government.)

Once we got home, we settled in and watched the cats enjoying all the new surfaces to explore. Newt seems to like the couch and the low end tables, Pye likes the bookcases, and more “cubbyhole” sort of spots. There’ll be more rearranging before the dust has settled, though.

We watched the first half of Astronaut Farmer while eating celebratory Chinese food – food was good, the movie was less than engaging for me.

Worn out, we’re heading to bed early tonight.

Forgot to post this yesterday –

0621081520a.jpg
ATW man Crabbing.

First thing we did today was view Swarm of the Snakehead at 1 am, when BHK woke from her Pizza Hut induced torpor “nap”.

We weren’t disappointed. Swarm of the Snakehead was exactly what we were looking for (and didn’t get) when we went to see Grindhouse. A fun, cheesy, “bad in a good way” sort of horror flick. It’s most certainly more a comedy film than horror, despite the periodic moments of gore. I’d love to see this on a large screen somewhere, or better yet as a movie shown outside, on the beach… maybe projected on the side of a large white building.

Head and shoulders above any other made for Sci-fi channel stuff, ten pound would likely do quite well to shop the film to them, or a similar venue.

I may be a bit biased, because it was filmed right nearby, primarily in Easton and Oxford – a hoot picking out local spots.

I can’t believe that Gunnar Hansen was both Leatherface and the “Quint from Jaws”-style Fisherman! There’s range for you!

I think I’ll write up a much longer and nicer review of the movie soon – I want to get some input from BHK about her perspective on the film, too. I’d say it was the highlight of our weekend, though.

After the delightful midnight movie with BHK, we tucked back into bed, and snoozed… I’d say we got up and out of the house by 11ish.

Polished off the last of the croissants from the farmer’s market (I had chocolate, she had almond), BHK decided to venture forth to Aardvark and grab our waiting games. Mike and Tara were out, but the employees were swell to us.

The day was gorgeous and since we wer euntethered by any other family responsibilities (in-laws took tigger to Salem for a long weekend), we meandered around Southern Maryland, looking for a nice new spot to grab some lunch and just enjoy each other’s company.

After much tooling around of St. Mary’s, we eventually ended up at the Reluctant Navigator. After eating there, I understand his reluctance. The food was somewhere between meh and ok. Service, not bad – environment when we first walked in the door was “we’ve made a terrible mistake” but after getting past the foyer filled with old boat motors, chainsaws, and crab traps covered in dust, the clean dining area changed our tune to “oh, this is probably all right.” I’d put the food at medium-low quality. somewhere in the 3-5 out of 10 range. I seriously doubt that we’ll be back, unless something amazing causes us to return.

We continued on our journey, with food in our bellies – after putting some petrol in the tank, we wandered into Cecil’s Old Mill, a general store and post office – pictures to follow sometime after I upload ’em. Meanwhile, check out what somd online has to offer. When I saw the logs in place, I had two thoughts. first – that’s perfect for an old movie villian to strap a maiden to, and let the hero try to save her while he gets away. The second was the gravity gun usage in last night’s HL2.

The old post office was my favorite, though. Lots of memorabilia everywhere.

We bought a pair of homemade brownies and a diet pepsi, and toddled on home, to water our plants right before a huge, thunder-filled rainstorm.

We had tasty sammiches for dinner, and watched our last tivo’ed Monk – where he reunites with his pop. Not a bad character dev show, but a lousy mystery solution. “We found the tie!”

Now, bedtime. Gnitght, dear journal. Have some lovely linkies.

Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds Barbie Doll

Just so you know that your family isn’t so bad, dear journal –

‘Cannibal relatives ate boy alive’

A seven-year-old boy was kept chained in a closet as relatives hacked off pieces of his flesh to eat, a court has heard.

In a case with echoes of the Fritzl family horror in Austria, Ondrej Mauerova was partially skinned in the closet in a cellar at his home in Kurim near Brno, in the Czech Republic, according to reports.

The abuse – involving members of a religious cult – was uncovered by chance last May when a neighbour’s television baby monitor picked up graphic pictures of what was happening next door.

Ondrej and his nine-year-old brother Jakub were locked and chained in the cellar for months by their mother Klara, 31 – a member of a group called the Grail Movement.

He was caged, beaten and gagged to stop him screaming, according to reports.

Mauerova had the monitor installed so that she could watch the abuse from her kitchen but the images were picked up by a neighbour who used an identical system to monitor a newborn baby, the regional court in Brno has heard.

Police were called and the two boys as well as what appeared to be a 13-year-old girl were freed.

But the girl later turned out to have been one of the alleged abusers, 34-year-old Barbora Skrlova.

She subsequently fled to Norway before being brought back to the Czech Republic earlier this year.

Mauerova has admitted abusing her children but she said she had been manipulated by Skrlova and her own sister Katerina.

The accused are Klara Mauerova, her sister Katerina, 34; Barbora Skrlova, 33; her brother Jan Skrla and a friend Jan Turek.

Shots, and off to southern states to grab a couple of pepper plants – saw an adorable pair of kids. Little girl in riding pants and very friendly, and her little brother who reminded me of JD at 6 years old. We also picked up some thistle seed for the finches (so Pye and Newt have a little outside wildlife to watch)

After that a lovely church wine and craft show… We got a Christmas ornament with a pair of origami cranes (cherry blossom pattern paper) inside of a rounded cube…. and a lovely packet of bake sale goodies. Aggression cookies (oatmeal), molasses and chocolate chip.

Episcopal church had the following on the bulletin board:

The comedian Robin Williams is an Episcopalian, and he has created a funny “Top Ten” List of reasons to be an Episcopalian.

10. No snake handling.

9. You can believe in dinosaurs.

8. Male and female, God created them; male and female, we ordain them.

7. You don’t have to check your brains at the door.

6. Pew aerobics.

5. Church year is color coded!

4. Free wine on Sunday.

3. All of the pageantry, none of the guilt.

2. You don’t have to know how to swim to get baptized.

And the number one reason for being an Episcopalian:

1. No matter what you believe, there’s bound to be at least one other Episcopalian who agrees with you.

I can dig that.

After the Church shindig, we Shakespeare on the Boardwalk – Much ado about nothing. TM’s neighbor Kevin was in it, as was Guppy (twin beach players )

after a bit of local and classic culture, we headed home to catch up with The Office and My Name is Earl.

she wasn’t taking my ride. I halfway wonder if the phone was even active.

9245 – Saturday

Extremely tentative plans for a little yard-sale review (sale-sailing?) after my shots today. Hopefully we’ll find just stuff that’s awesome… the whole town of North Beach is having a village-sized yard sale next weekend. Maybe I’ll put out my old computer monitor for some lucky strong-backed mule to cart off the property.

Potential other things post needle-stick are the Eastern Shore, Marine Museum and maybe General Tanuki’s.

Or Maybe something different! It got to 87 degrees yesterday.. we might have to find a place to play in the shade!

Evening update-

Saw a yard sale on the way to shots – Neighborhood cul-de-sac family collection on Limerick Lane. BHK got a spiffy cap for 50 cents – another Mao-meets surfer girl type cap. Not much else out there for us.

Got Stuck for allergies. Hardly a soul there, so it went quickly.

Skipped the Eastern shore – Decided to hit the Vegetable Garden in Rockville, by way of a long, meandering tour through DC. Flew through Chinatown and some of the more seedy parts of town en route.

From there, a bit of an extended shopping trip. Eyeballed some workout equipment, picked up some ram for my laptop at Micro Center,  (checked out the EEE pc  – cute, and maybe in a month, once the 900 model is out) – Bought the father in law a e-tuner keychain, bhk an ipod clock-radio dock alarm clock, and myself an evil universal remote keychan.

Continuing on – Dream Wizards for Balloon Cup  and Gloom (and a ten in ten die – opaque d10 inside a transparent one. pretty nifty.)

Casual Male XL for a few pairs of work pants, some v-neck shirts, and a new pair of shoes.

Back home the short way, for supper of pb&j on rice cakes. (sideline – made hot dogs for in-laws and BHK last night – both dinners were dandy)

Watched some TV, and now, it’s time for bed. g’nite dear journal.

Hey, WotC have a bunch of classic D&D modules available for download – Including White plume mountain ! Probably the third commercial module I ever played after Keep on the Borderlands and Isle of Dread – certainly the first one I played that wasn’t included with a set of the game rules itself…

Wiki info on White Plume Mountain here.

Of the three, White Plume was the most fun.. I had characters that had a decent skill set and abilities, but it was still tricky – held a goodly dose of puzzles and challenges. All of the S-modules were fun, but I liked plume more than tomb of horrors, and  Barrier Peaks. (Peaks was cool – great setting, but just too deadly for my lower level guys to deal with. It could be nicely reworked into something a bit more survivable and plotted, I think.)

If I had to pick my favorite low-level module, I’d have to go with Against the Cult of the Reptile God – I think the setting was a lot more fun than any of the other 1-3 level modules we played back in the day, and it was the first one I successfully ran for the library group as a DM. Sort of funny to see them listed as classic – I remember picking them up when they came out – still wrapped in plastic, most of them 3-hole punched at the factory.

Larry’s coming along nicely with the electric guitar. He’s got the body just about done… needs holes for the pickups in the back, and then some stain and coat next. This is the first time in a while that he’s taken time to work on it – it’s a beautiful bit of craftsmanship thus far, and I look forward to hearing how it sounds. There’s talk of him making me a bass after this one is finished, too. (Made from the maple that’s growing far to close to our house’s foundation… not to mention the branches that could take out the roof in a bad storm.

I wonder how his projects will be affected when they rent out the blue house? The workshop half of the two-car garage there… not sure how tenants would feel about him running power tools here and there. Of course, that also begs the question of where I’ll run off and hide to wrap Christmas presents, come next Yuletide season.

Ah well, no big fears either way.  I expect he’ll continue to do projects for many, many years to come. This weekend, we’re tilling the garden – and hopefully planting my blueberry seedling.  BHK has already potted the daisies and put them outside – I’m looking more forward to plants that produce food items, and the possibility of keeping a beehive.
