9231 – Tuesday.

BHK and I aren’t watching as much TV as usual… I suspect we’re hitting an ebb tide right now. However, things may change once the new shows start rolling in again. I believe that there was a new Samantha, Who on last night, and I imagine that once Psych and Burn Notice start to roll again, we’ll be watching at least a few hours a week.

After supper last night, we came home, had some razzles and read (or did Internet research on the Tidal Basin Inlet Bridge – had to find out what was up with this sculpture/grotesque on the side.)

50 things you’ve done meme continues at 47 – I…

47.’built more than a few models as a kid. Not always well-done…. but I always did ’em to completion, even if some got the lighter treatment for “battle damage”. At my youngest, I did snap-together models of cars that could be played with right afterward – pretty rewarding… the more advanced ones like aircraft carriers and tanks always had guns and tiny airplanes that would easily fall off or break if played with too roughly…. plus, dust and dirt wrecked paint jobs.

This might be why I’m a little attracted to Warhammer or just painting minis. Models you can play with are something extra special. I still don’t know if I want to do Warhammer Fantasy or some other system… meanwhile, I may just get some paints and work on army men / mage knight leftover figures that could use a little color or customization. I’m due to make BHK and myself some updated figures, as I don’t have long hair anymore, and I never did make one of her.

Maybe it’s time for us to investigate Fimo and the like, too? Image on the right is an ancient one of Danny and me fending off a few zombies on a papercraft bridge.

9229 – Monday – palindrome… May a moody baby doom a yam?

Help me. I have the “One Day At A Time” theme stuck in my head.

This is it! This. Is. It.

This is life, the one you get
So go and have a ball.

This is it! This. Is. It.

Straight ahead and rest assured
You can’t be sure at all.

So while you’re here enjoy the view
Keep on doing what you do
So hold on tight we’ll muddle through
One day at a time, One day at a time.

So up on your feet. Up on your feet
Somewhere there’s music playing.
Don’t you worry none
We’ll just take it like it comes.

One day at a time, one day at a time.
One day at a time, one day at a time.
One day at a time, one day at a time.
One day at a time, one day at a time.

and I were working on the same frequency this morning, regarding gags about prying the gun from Charlton Heston’s cold, dead, hand.

Body mightily resisted getting out of bed this morning, but I had to do it. Home now… only 4 more days until the next weekend!

Chris drove me to my stop this AM, but BHK picked me up. It’s hard to spend even 8 hours away from her, after I’ve been so spoiled by a 3-day weekend. We zipped to California Tortilla for dindin, and now we’re going to have a lovely night!

It’s getting warmer, and the trees are getting greener every day. Sure, I’ll be hot and sweaty sometime soon.. but then we’ll have fireflies.

Every season has something awesome.

DC pics from Friday for later ref – this area, mostly. Our walk was about 3-4 miles total, but the ground was hilly.. I wonder how much more that added?

9227 – Saturday

Yesterday, we went to DC to check out the cherry blossom festival – post rain they were at about 70% bloom, still lovely – it was overcast, made for mediocre photography, but I did get to visit the Jefferson monument, and the FDR memorial (which is probably my new favorite …. giant, tells the story well, and beautiful. I’d never been to it before – didn’t really know much about it.)

Best of the pictures to follow in a later post – but here’s a link to what was taken yesterday.

A ton of spam journals have added me recently… had to go through the console and ban_set them.

We went to the aquarium last night! pictures and details later – what a nice idea of BHK though… open until 9pm friday night.

Things on the agenda:

Allergy Shots.
Alice’s Party.
Dinner out – Maybe Paper Moon or some Baltimore location.
Rest, relax, recharge.

Got Next Friday off – BHK and I are going to check out the cherry blossom festival or some other fun thing as a little spring fling. I’m almost more interested in people-watching than taking in the beautiful blooms. Hopefully, going on a weekday will reduce mob issues. (Friday’s cherry blossom events ) I wouldn’t mind paying the Jefferson Memorial a stopover, or riding a paddle boat in the tidal basin.

The Examiner reports that Metro’s oldest rail cars have become so worn, their aluminum floors are cracking under the carpeting. Metro says the cracks pose no immediate safety risk to riders, and that when cracks are spotted, cars are pulled from service and the aluminum is welded back together. The old cars aren’t due to be replaced for at least five years.

50 things you’ve done meme continues at 45 – I…

45.’ have been in few physical fights in my life, and most have only lasted a short span… as a result of those melees, I’ve discovered that it is better to fight tactically with a cool head, than when angry… of course, if you’ve got a cool head, who wants to fight? I’ve never had much choice, as I’m a poor runner – easier to take down an opponent than to run away at a speed where I’ll be taxed and overcome, anyhow. When overly emotional, I’m a more frightening combatant. Unless common sense overrides fear or rage, I will continue to attack an opponent (no matter what they’re condition is in) until I’m exhausted. It’s a wonder I never killed anyone including myself during puberty.

These days, and for a long time now, I’m quite passive. I can still get the short hairs on my neck up if life or loved ones are threatened, but for the most part, I try to channel my energy into more useful pursuits. My skill at fighting is poor… I could stand some updated martial arts training, even boxing would be good – my primary strengths are the ability to take a hit, grappling and hitting my opponent hard and heavy.

The last time I was in a real fistfight was more than a decade and a half ago…and that one was more of a “grab-punch-done” sort of scenario. I was working at the bookstore, helping a woman out in the kids books. A guy, probably in his late 30s, early 40s (I was maybe 23?) comes over, grabs my arm and says “you’ve helped her long enough, it’s my turn”. His physical contact caused me to tense up, and I told him if he didn’t let go of me, then I’d punch him in the nose. He responded with “yeah, right”… I counted to three, and then popped him one in the face. He landed square on his backside, and I told him in a phrase littered with profanity to get out. He did, but he also contacted the store manager. Despite my feeling that I was in the right, I was fired the same day. My next job was assembling furniture while I finished off my Bachelor’s Degree.

Since then, I’ve been in a few low-level conflicts, but nothing that would cause me to “go in swinging”, usually because the issue was defused befor eI had time to build up a full head of steam. I’ve been hit in the face with a pool cue… but it was an accident. That did stop us from kicking the guy off the grounds, but I didn’t press any charges.

Worst fight in my life was with a jerky in my freshman year of high school. I really had no experience in the HS arena, and the guy sucker-punched me in the gut and then kneed me in the privates. I pretty much keeled over immediately. He dropped out before I got a chance to plot any great revenge on him – I suppose it’s just as well, because I’d probably be doing time to this day if I’d done any of what went through my mind that week.

My favorite encounter involved the end of my senior year in the cafeteria during 2nd lunch. A fellow senior and I were doing the ape behaviors of open-palm pushing one another, building to a bigger fight. My brother, looking to protect me, took one of the aluminum food trays and slammed it loudly over my enemy’s head. It was loud, but didn’t do any real damage, save to break up the fight with laughter on both sides.

9191 – tuesday

Watched the last two episodes of Alien in America while BHK snoozed on my arm last night – pretty good.

BHK got some nerds jelly beans (sold as “giant chewy nerds”) when we went to Aardvark last weekend.

The Orange were my Fave, Green were hers. (as is our usual) The crunch really added something – I liked them a lot more than standard jellybean fare, even though I like jelly belly soda-pop flavors quite a bit, too.

On the C7 bus this morning, we passed another bus (R3) with the front banner flashing “call 911 – emergency, call police” on the front. I alerted my driver, and she said that it’s a common accident – the other guy likely pressed the alarm button by accident and doesn’t know better. I suggested that she call the station just to be sure, and she stated that it wouldn’t be needed… someone else is bound to do it.

That puzzled me… what if the guy were in actual trouble? I got off the bus and contacted to police to let them know… they haven’t called me back. I wonder if they’re even following up on it?

I figure it’s better be safe than sorry… If I see a sign that says “HELP!!”, I’m going to act on it – especially if it’s as simple as dialing 3 numbers on my phone.

50 things I’ve done meme continues with items 27-29. I…

27.’ran my own BBS system back in the early 80’s – an Atari 800XL with two ways to connect – a 300 and a 1200 baud modem…later I added a third modem that ran at 9600 baud. It used 3 floppy drives to share data. It boiled down to a simple message board with a few instances of trade wars on it. I was also the co-sysop of three other atari boards out there – the community was small, but there was a lot of signal – very little noise. Brent had his own soapbox on there.. “Kaiser’s Korner” where he did goofy right-wing rants – primarily to bait people into responding. His section didn’t last long, thankfully. My bbs eventually faded into a website, and then after quite a bit of rattling and rolling, a place for my own journal. Livejournal and current blogging software is a lot easier than hand-rolling every html page and uploading it.

28.’have a mortgage, and own (with the bank) a condominium in Deerfield Beach, Florida. I have been considering selling it, or keeping it as a backup crash pad of friends and relatives that want a place to be while in the sunshine state. It’s a one-bedroom on the third floor, with a huge porch. I’m especially fond of the iguanas that live out by the lake in the courtyard.. the ibis are a fave, too. Newton prefers the squirrels.

29.’Have been member of both the Civil Air Patrol and Boy Scouts – both were pretty positive expeiriences, and I’d advise anyone to try both, despite the boy scout complaints about deisim or sexism.

Guy on the bus yesterday evening reeked of old sweat, recent booze and other items too gross to go into. It wasn’t so bad, except that he got up, changed seats and sat directly in front of me… with no escape mechanism for me. My nose was tingling for about an hour afterward. brings to mind the following – Bus trips from DC to NY- Free wifi for the trip, too. (sort of like dc2ny ) I wonder how long they’ll stay “clean and fresh”?

Secaucus, N.J.-based Boltbus, a division of Greyhound Lines Inc., said tickets went on sale Monday for the service that will start March 27.

Boltbus will run between Metro Center at 11th and G streets NW and two stops in New York City — near Penn Station at 33rd Street and 7th Avenue and in south Manhattan at 6th Avenue and Canal Street.

Boltbus will compete with the Washington Deluxe, Apex Bus, Vamoose Express and DC2NY, a service that started in July 2007 between Dupont Circle and Penn Station in New York with a stop at the McPherson Square Metro station.

DC2NY launched in July and marketed the service by offering free water and high-speed wireless Internet service onboard.

Boltbus is not only also offering wireless, but it is also using a first-come first-serve incentive to sign up riders.

The company said one-way tickets start at $1 plus a 50 cent booking fee and become more expensive as the bus gets full. Also, Boltbus is offering a free one-way ticket for every eight round trips purchased.

Tickets for each bus company vary, but are typically between $30 and $40 round trip, which is significantly cheaper than Amtrak’s cost of about $140 and up for a round-trip ticket.

The buses tend to attract travelers and students who are looking for an affordable way to get between the cities.

Boltbus said it will offer eight trips daily, starting at 7:30 a.m. from D.C. to New York.

Well, we got plenty of ice… about a quarter-inch on the porch alone, to say nothing of the roads. Forget the salt and sand… send out a fleet of zambonis! Is the plural of zamboni zambonies? Zambonii?

Worked form home today, though there were moments of spotty internet access. I suspect that I got more accomplished at the house, given the lack of sidebar interruptions.

Federal agencies in the Washington, DC, area are OPEN under an UNSCHEDULED LEAVE policy.

This Means . . .

  • Employees who cannot report for work may request unscheduled leave for their entire scheduled workday. Employees must notify their supervisors of their intent to take unscheduled leave.
  • Emergency employees are expected to report for work on time.

After work was over, BHK made some yummy thai-style spicy/ sour soup – even more awesome than the stuffed peppers made earlier this week.

Larry’s wonder-truck braved the ice and made it over to repair our kitchen light fixture and reap the rewards of Tivo by watching the train crash top gear!

S. 781, the “Do-Not-Call Registry Fee Extension Act of 2007,” which extends permanently the authority of the Federal Trade Commission to charge fees to telemarketers required to access the Federal “do-not-call” registry and specifies the fees to be charged.

Happy Valentines Day!

Got a lovely Kermit the frog card from BHK. Words can’t even begin to describe how much love I have for her. I hold her dearly in my heart. She makes every day a valentiney sort of day. Hard to get too worked up about a day that’s all about love and affection when I’m immersed in it all the time.

That’s a good thing!

As ol’ Bill Shakespeare put it,

Let me not to the marriage of true minds
Admit impediments. Love is not love
Which alters when it alteration finds,
Or bends with the remover to remove:
O no! it is an ever-fixed mark
That looks on tempests and is never shaken;
It is the star to every wandering bark,
Whose worth’s unknown, although his height be taken.
Love’s not Time’s fool, though rosy lips and cheeks
Within his bending sickle’s compass come:
Love alters not with his brief hours and weeks,
But bears it out even to the edge of doom.
If this be error and upon me proved,
I never writ, nor no man ever loved.

Tonight, we exchanged chocolates, and BHK made tasty mexican bake for me and the in-laws. (well, Chris… Larry had Hot dogs.) Dessert was 3-chocolate ice cream and orange cake with milk chocolate icing. nom nom nom.  More fun din  din news to follow, I’m sure.

I would so totally pay three dollars for that. (But then again, I’d dig a Han Solo in Carbonite mini-fridge, too)

Big wins of the day – I had a leftover birthday macaroon tupperware-sealed in my desk in the office! Nice treat for mid-afternoon.. still moist and delicious. Added bonus, going out for Monday night half-price falafel night after work with BHK and the in-laws – with special guest Adam!

Adam seems to be adjusting to living in an apartment near campus quite nicely… better place than I had in school, for sure… private bedroom with a private bathroom. I think he’s adapting to a land full of college age girls very happily.

We picked up 8 new dress shirts and a pair of sweat pants at Value City for under $60. I still don’t know how BHK’s shopper-sense works, but I’m glad she uses it for the powers of good, rather than evil.

Got an hour or so of TF2 in before bed… tried to play with Helen and Mattie, but their server was maxed at 32…. I’m discovering that I like playing the medic and the scout.

I can’t believe that I never knew that there is (soon to be “was” come 2009) Library of Congress police force.

The Library of Congress police force were formed in 1950 as an unarmed force that was designated to control entry and exit procedures for the library and its tunnels that connect the buildings to the rest of the Capitol complex. As of 1987, the LOC police have carried guns.

Note to self – Legit, free downloads of ancient games I never got around to playing when they cost money. Maybe my rickety old laptop will run ’em comfortably? Wild metal!

also, favorite freebie little game of the nanosecond – Shift. Clever little thing. I dig it – once I find a way to port it to the palmtop, woe is my value on my commute home!

Wow… quite a turnout re: Anonymous vs Scientology. interesting pictures. shots from the DC protest.

Supporters of Anonymous, the loosely organized group of internet activists who have attacked the Church of Scientology recently with videos and server hacks, appeared outside D.C.’s Founding Church of Scientology center on Sunday. The protest was part of a planned “global day of action” with the stated purpose of setting off a government investigation into how Scientology got tax-exempt status.

The Feb. 10 protests, which took place in dozens of cities, were initially announced last month after a video attributed to Anonymous coincided with an online effort that managed to temporarily knock out servers belonging to the Church of Scientology. The date was chosen for the protest because Feb. 10 was the birthday of Lisa McPherson, who died of a pulmonary embolism in 1995 under the care of a branch of the Church of Scientology. (via DCist)

Just heading out to dinner and a movie with BHK – Juno is on the agenda, not sure about dinner yet. Most likely Cheeburger2… but California Tortilla, Johnny Rockets and Potbelly are also in the running. I could go for just about anything – looking forward to having a nice slow weekend. In-laws are going out of town, so we’ll be peeking in on Miss Tigger. Maybe I’ll get a little Wii or Portal time in, and I wouldn’t mind doing some exploring with BHK to points outside of our walls, either.

Oops, there she is now! Until later, Dear journal. Have a link or two, a meme and a psa to tide you over.

This animated music video was created by 64 Communications students from Concordia University in Montreal as part of the Open-Source Cinema project. The students “rotoscoped 1-3 seconds of video each, over a period of three weeks. (Most of them had never used Flash before.)” The results are fantastic – with a variety of engaging styles in the final product.

They say: “We were inspired by Bob Sabiston’s digital rotoscoping (as seen in Snack and Drink, Waking Life, A Scanner Darkly), and our readings and class discussions about copyright and creativity. (Course textbook: Christine Harold’s OurSpace: Resisting the Corporate Control of Culture.)”

Friday 5 –

1. What’s your favorite shape?
I’m pretty fond of pentagons and 5-sided stars, but I’d have to say the simplicity of a circle is my favorite.

2. Who is the craziest person you know?

Dangerous to themselves crazy?

Dangerous to others Crazy?

Just insane?

Goofy?

I know a lot of people that are definably nutso.

3. Sweet, salty or savory?

I love ’em all! depends on my mood.

4. Best ice cream topping?

Simple hershey’s chocolate sauce for me.

5. Do you ride horses?

I’ve ridden before, but not for a loooong time. I’m not the best at it, but I don’t look like a monkey humping a football when on a canter.

Temperatures are expected to remain well below freezing again overnight, which can mean danger for the District’s homeless population. The city has put out a reminder to call their Hypothermia Shelter Hotline should you spot anyone trying to sleep outside when it’s this cold.

By calling 1-800-535-7252, the Shelter Hotline can provide transportation to emergency shelters and distribute items such as blankets, gloves and jackets.

If you live outside the District, Express has compiled a list of numbers to call in Montgomery County, Prince George’s County, Arlington County, Fairfax County and Alexandria.

“A DARPA-funded research project at UCLA has wrapped up a set of animal trials testing the effects of inhalation of the brain chemical orexin A, a deficiency of which is a characteristic of narcolepsy. Monkeys were deprived of sleep, and then given a shot of the compound. ‘The study … found orexin A not only restored monkeys’ cognitive abilities but made their brains look “awake” in PET scans. Siegel said that orexin A is unique in that it only had an impact on sleepy monkeys, not alert ones, and that it is ‘specific in reversing the effects of sleepiness’ without other impacts on the brain.’ Researchers seem cautious to bill the treatment as a replacement for sleep, as it is not clear that adjusting brain chemistry could have the same physical benefits of real sleep in the long run. The drug is aimed at replacing amphetamines used by drowsy long-haul military pilots, but there would no doubt be large demand for such a remedy thanks to its apparent lack of side-effects.”

9094 – Thursday

Tomorrow is the Christmas party at work. I wonder what the following week before vacation is going to be like? I suspect it’ll mostly be business as usual.

Got BHK David DeBoy‘s Crabs for Christmas CD… gave it to her early… as a cd of christmas music on christmas day has a very limited shelf-life. (At least until next year) She was more than delighted – it really is pretty much “Our” holiday song, after all.

The other songs on the CD are pretty groovy, too. I was a little worried it might be a lot of filler, but the tunes are a lot of fun – especially if you’re a Marylander.

Found out how to add everyone on my lj friends page to an rss reader directly... That’s pretty dang handy.

Also, drawings of Bears in Ill-fitting hats.

“By an overwhelming majority Metro board members approved today the largest increases in subway fares and parking fees in the agency’s history after months of contentious debate among directors…

“The board members essentially approved a plan offered in recent days by Maryland members that lessens the impact on suburban and long-distance riders. That plan followed a public hearing that drew more than 400 comments from riders, many of whom said that proposed fare and fee hikes were too high and not merited by metro’s unreliable service.”

A study from Mental Health America ranks the most depressed states in America. Here they are, ranked from happiest to saddest. (via fallentoad)

The study ranks the 50 states and the District of Columbia based on rates of depression and suicide. Researchers found that states with easier access to mental health resources had lower suicide rates. (see also – Smaller babies grow up to be sadder adults / Study links low birth rate to depression, anxiety later in life)

Highlighted below are places I’ve spent the majority of my formative years, plus my current setting of Maryland.

We’re number 5!

I know I’m a lot happier in Maryland than I was in Florida, but that environment could travel with me anywhere, and I’d feel better…. just as long as I have BHK, Pye and Newt along for the ride.

Depression is a serious medical illness that comes in many forms with a variety of symptoms.
If you have any of the following symptoms for a prolonged period, it may be time to seek help.

  1. Persistent sad or anxious mood
  2. Feelings of hopelessness or pessimism
  3. Feelings of guilt or worthlessness
  4. Loss of interest in hobbies or activities
  5. Fatigue or decreased energy
  6. Difficulty concentrating or making decisions
  7. Insomnia or oversleeping
  8. Changes in appetite or weight
  9. Thoughts of death or suicide
  10. Restlessness or irritability
  11. Headaches or chronic pain

Of the above, I tend meet the qualifications from number 6 (not so much), 10 and 11, though I don’t think that I suffer from depression, rather, physical issues are causing them.

Speaking of which, I went to the doc for a reviewing of the back situation. Aside from the standard “eat better, exercise more” bit, there wasn’t much else to report just yet. I make an appointment for an MRI tomorrow.

  2. Feb – Gentle day, all told – Went out to Jerry’s for lunch, shopped for party food, got a haircut ( short, but I think it looks good.)
  3. Mar – Chatted a bit with graypumpkin online about gaming, road trips and whatnot while I was doing online research about gigs and following up on resumes (not to mention found info about MCSE server 2003).
  4. Apr – Rode with Tina and BHK to urgent care over chest congestion – seems like sinus infections related to allergies is the rule of the day.
  5. May – BHK and I might do something special for May Day.
  6. Jun – They offered me the gig!
  7. Jul – We spent most of the day out and about, Geocaching with the Newsoms.

  9. Sep – Rennfest was a hoot! Much larger venue than South Florida’s, and more professionally done.

  11. Nov – Skipped the jacket on the commute to and from work today – 55-65F isn’t too bad with a long sleeved shirt.
  12. Dec – Nice morning, until I got out of bed and pulled my back.

Pretty nifty stuff… flickr now has a halfway decent photo editor built in! The freebies are all I really want, so it’s golden. (I suspect that I’ll use color fixing and cropping the most.)

Writer’s Strike has finally hit us in the recorder… looks like all of our shows are in repeats already. I guess Netflix will start earning its keep for a while!

I’ll be missing House and The Office the most – I suspect BHK is feeling it most from Ugly Betty.

BHK picked up Big Brain Academy and Elebits from the rental place… I really dig BBA… Elebits, not so much. I’m glad that we get a chance to “try before you buy” on the Wii, as Elebits might’ve gotten snapped up due to the very cutesy aspect of the game.

I suspect that BBA will be purchased sometime soon… I like the little brain-stretching minigames.

So far my strengths and weaknesses are:

  • Identify (Visual-themed questions) – ok
  • Memorize (Memory-themed questions) – worst
  • Analyze (Reason-based questions) – ok
  • Compute (Math-themed questions) – ok
  • Visualize (Logic-themed questions) best

Which seems to follow with my other games of a similar ilk for the psp.
