Shauna D.’s Review Of Famima!! (4/5)
My friend was out of toothpaste and we figured Famima would have some. They did but he didn’t want Tom’s of Maine. Silly guy, I would have taken it! Don’t you want clean teeth?
Anyway, since I was… (via Scotto B. on Yelp)
Shauna D.’s Review Of Paper Source (4/5)
This is a great store for a casual paper crafter or even a complete newbie. They have tons of paper and supplies. But if you’re a crafter or artist on a budget, you can get a bit carried away. I… (via Scotto B. on Yelp)
Shauna D.’s Review Of Paper Source (2/5)
When I first started getting into paper crafts back in ‘99 (though, I had always done collage and random rubber stamping before then), I had heard about this fabled store, Paper Source. I was totally… (via Scotto B. on Yelp)
Shauna D.’s Review Of Shaab Restaurant (4/5)
About 9 p.m. last night, we straggled in from marathon shopping around Old Town. I had bookmarked this place earlier in the day thinking of trying it out. It took a little convincing from me to get… (via Scotto B. on Yelp)
Current Song
Some cracked up 4-year-old version of this sung in a sing-song voice:
“I am slowly going crazy
One two three four five six, switch!
Crazy going slowly am I
Six five four three two one, switch!”
Instructions found on internet kids’ site read:
“Repeat it over and over and over until your head explodes, or somebody forces you to stop. ”
Um yep that’s about right!
I counter-attack by putting on a Scottish accent and calling her (my niece) PERRRRRR-Snickety. This makes her scream “I am NOT snickety!”
This is met with a formidable combo of: the Spongebob Squarepants theme song and chatter about various kitty cats she knows and whether they have claws and whether or not they are nice and whether or not they can jump high.
For the grand final I pretend I have gone deaf and make smacking noises on my lips. I am defeated by a tongue lololololol-ing and fingers in the ears.
My husband will be lucky to find either of us sane by the end of the day. I hope he’s ready to take us to Chuck-E-Cheese and spend ridiculous amounts of money for skee-ball games….oh and whatever games my niece wants to play.

8943 – Thursday
Emily arrived safe and sound about an hour ago… she’s all tucked in – BHK and I will be turning in for the night shortly, too. Until tomorrow, dear journal, here’s some stuff.
Can’t Forget!
The Red Line has resumed normal service
after a suspicious package closed the Dupont Circle, Woodley Park, and Cleveland Park stations for several hours.
Metro Transit Police bomb technicians X-rayed the box, then safely disrupted it with a water cannon. The box contained paper and cardboard. The train was taken to a nearby rail yard for further investigation.
Sad to hear that Dresden Files was canned – I was digging it. It didn’t look like it was too expensive to produce, but who knows what was going on under the hood.
Ah, well… The nice thing about one less good tv show is that it’s one less tv show, period. More time for me to focus on other things.

Mixing Icehouse and Second Life? I’m lucky that I’ve got BHK and the lads to intervene or I’d be wasting hours fiddling with that. (If it were 2 years or so ago, I’d probably be in there right now, working on the code and looking at what was what.) I haven’t tried Regular ol’ Torpedo yet, but it looks like fun.
Speaking of Doodles (last entry) and Pyramids, here are some more random doodles drawn on the bus. I’m fiddling wit hthe idea of a multi-tiered gameboard – some standard chase-game variant like monopoly or sorry, with different abilities or events on each level. also thinking about a Rock/Paper/Scissors element to the nests/trees, as far as landing and capture are concerned – big beats middle, middle beats little, little beats big. I’d like to finish it in time for this year’s Ice Game Design Competition, but I doubt I’ll make it. Maybe next year!
Heck, have a recent Newtcam pic, too, dear journal!

8941 – Wednesday
One year until 08/08/08!
I found out today that the family across the street from us has lived in that house for the last 23 or so years. Adam, the youngest son at age 18 has lived in the same home his whole life. I wonder how often that happens anymore? I don’t think I’ve put more than five years of life in the same building – I didn’t even spend more than 2 years in the same school until I hit 9th grade as my folks moved around quite a bit.
I’m not sure I can even imagine how intimately familiar a person comes to be with that sort of environment… that kid must know every stone and fence within a 10-mile area. He must’ve seen some very significant changes over the last two decades.. North Beach was a bit of a biker town before it got an influx of bay front property money. There is quite a cultural microcosm these days, but the upper-middle class seems to be taking the lead.
Today’s weather is *evil* – Current Temperature is 100°F, “feels like” 109. And that’s at “partly cloudy”. How much hotter would it be with full-bore sun?
Totally random thought formed on the train – do the words cowherd (someone who herds cows) and coward (someone who shows fear in the face of danger) have a connection? I need to research that.
[edit – Well, I guess not. Word History: A coward is one who “turns tail.” The word comes from Old French couart, coart, “coward,” and is related to Italian codardo, “coward.” Couart is formed from coe, a northern French dialectal variant of cue, “tail” (from Latin c
da), to which the derogatory suffix -ard was added. This suffix appears in bastard, laggard, and sluggard, to name a few. A coward may also be one with his tail between his legs. In heraldry a lion couard, “cowardly lion,” was depicted with his tail between his legs. So a coward may be one with his tail hidden between his legs or one who turns tail and runs like a rabbit, with his tail showing.]
She’ll be visiting from Thursday through Sunday. I expect a *lot* of fun and a probably a couple of interesting challenges. (She’s little, and will likely miss her folks on one or two nights.)
After thinking about it, I feel that a variant of Oshi might work well with the Icehouse pyramids. (Other possibilities at the World of Abstract Games )
