Didn’t watch the Superbowl. Whoops. I suppose I’ll find out who won sometime this week.

It snowed tonight, and was quite brisk today. We took a walk into the bay (it had frozen, and the water retreated quite a distance back. The [edit to complete]

cold weather iced over the bay, allowing BHK and I to walk out on the mud flat and take pictures from the water zones and ice toward the beach. Found all sorts of nifty old bottles, shark’s teeth and horseshoe crab carcasses frozen in the ice. Too cold to go out without gloves, however, so I took pictures here and there, but kept my mitts in my sleeves like an amputee cut off at the wrists.

Slow-ish day, mostly work and stay at home errands, with a nice dinner cooked for the in laws by bhk here. We now own a george foreman grill (regifted to us at Christmas, but received the top of this month) -Veggie burgers, hot dogs with chili and french fries for din-din. Discovered that Larry doesn’t go for any mustard but yellow – Honey mustard or spicy brown doesn’t work. Fortunately, we had chili, so it’s all good. Birthday cake for dessert.

It was a nice day, all told.

Yesterday, at the regional home show, there was a huge display regarding “DRYER FIRE” – it turned out to be a $1 bottle brush renamed “Dryer lint safety brush”, and selling for $20.

I say, “bah, a mostly synthetic danger cooked up by lint brush salesmen… if you clean the lint trap, how can can it be?”

If I were a more superstitious fellow, I’d fear cruel irony, as we’re doing laundry.

That said, I got the idea for a new item.. the smoke detector smoke detector… to detect if your other smoke detector is on fire… because you know that more than nine out of every ten smoke detector fires is started inside a smoke detector. (I wonder how many house fires have started from an electrical short in a smoke detector?)

Pomonkey – best local Amerindian word / Town name ever. Aww.. Po’Monkey got no nanners! Possibly a place to get a gig re:security and etc, too.

Garden plan –

Tina, the In-Laws, BHK and I have a garden planned for our back yard – planting begins in March for the first crop.

It’ll be in our back yard… Larry’s going to bring in a few truckloads of topsoil and rototill by the end of this month… BHK and I will be working the section with broccoli, peas and parsley in March, and then continuing to pumpkin, watermelon, cantaloupe, cilantro, sunflowers, green beans and garlic at the top of may.

Other crops tended by the gang will include potato, onion, carrot, radishes, a few varieties of tomatoes, grapes, blueberries and all sorts of others. I expect it’ll be a fun and educational experience… I haven’t grown anything on this scale before, but we’ve got a master gardener, an engineer and a farm boy on our side to help keep things a-rollin’.

Had a lovely Birthday yesterday. BHK had a party for me, and we had a goodly sized gang over… Cathy, Tina, The In-Laws, Jimmy, and Adam for Baked Ziti, lemon cupcakes (with raspberries), yellow b’day cake with chocolate frosting, maple cookies, mint oreos, all manner of mixed nuts and veggies for snacking. Oh, and M&M’s.

We had a nice time… chitty chattiing while the teens played Destroy all humans and SSX Tricky. Newt and Pye were polite little boys, too…social but not beggars or meanies. We caught up on some TiVo’d stuff when the tube wasn’t monopolized by any other activity.

EM and Buga wished me a voice mail happy b’day in the early AM, and Emily called back later and sang Happy B’day to me quite nicely.

I hope my wish comes true on the blown-out candles… Adam buttered my nose *again* (in addition to BHK’s two hits) right after extinguishing them. I really don’t have any demands, just requests… I really have more than I could possibly have hoped for already.

I didn’t see my shadow this morning. No more cold?

Well, I got my Nose buttered twice by BHK already – (In a few places around the world, the traditional birthday trick is what is often known as ‘grease face.’ The same custom is known in parts of the Maritime provinces of Canada as ‘buttered noses.’ As early as is convenient on the birthday someone tries to reach from behind the birthday boy or girl and dab on their nose a fingerful of grease, often butter. This is accompanied by best wishes for the year, now lubricated with the greasy face. Among schoolchildren this custom sometimes takes the form of pushing a sweet, creamy cake in the face) (See also BHK’s entry from about 6 years or so ago)

Also, my morning was brought to a lovely start with blueberry pancakes and a cheese omelet for b’day breakfast. YUM!

Candlemas Day (February 2nd) is known as “La fête de la chandeleur” among the francophones of the West Coast and is celebrated with a beribboned bachelor King visiting houses of eligible young women. Elsewhere in the province it is known as a day to watch for bears’ shadows in order to predict the weather. Candlemas Day is the same date as the American Groundhog Day but retains the old Christian calendar name, which derives from the tradition of blessing the annual supply of church candles on that day, the official end of the liturgical Christmas season. Gentle day, all told – Went out to Jerry’s for lunch, shopped for party food, got a haircut ( short, but I think it looks good. More importantly, the Mrs. Digs it.) Made it home at a decent hour, and watched TV – News Radio and Ugly betty, followed by Holy Man. a nice, relaxing evening with just Bhk and myself… quite nice.

Pretty slow going today – applied for work at a few places. The biggest excitement was loss of electrical power from 6:30ish to about 7am. Got a lot accomplished, and BHK had some solid work at the local law office today. I spent most of my time at home taking care of the usual tech / job app issues… and playing with the kitties.

Tina came over to have dinner and watch American idol with us – not a bad show, but it’s more of a social event than actually getting into the TV. I have now seen three episodes of a non-COPS reality show.

It took the better part of the day, but the commode is finished. Before starting, we had a big pancake breakfast, courtesy of BHK – Chris and BHK went shopping while Larry & I worked on the plumbing… timing was good… we finished about 15 minutes before they called to let us know that they were heading back, and we ended the day with Chinese food, and watching Men In Black.

Got a nice call from Danny, too – his wife is in Bangladesh, reviewing a clothing place’s quality control. I wonder what the quality of life is of the workers there.

Birthday is on Friday – Still not sure what, if anything will be happening for it. I suspect a quiet get-together with some family & friends… I’d like to see as much of the local gang make it if they can, but Friday night has got to be a tricky one, especially if it’s short notice. Given the current financial limits, I suspect the Wii will be a rain check item.

Started installation of a new commode (the old wax seal was going and was beginning to leak), and got sort of side barred into a trip to the Marine Museum on Solomon’s Island. It was a fun trip with the in-laws and BHK to points exceedingly south. After the museum, we waited a long while to eat at Outback, but the food was tasty and plentiful. (I think it made Chris more angry than anyone else) I think I’ve gone out to eat more in the last three months of marriage than I have in the last twelve of bachelorhood! I’m trying to eat a bit better, though, and keep it at least moderately healthy. The waistline is doing a bit of a retreat, which is good.. I think that’s primarily due to all the running around town and moving that’s been done.

Brother and Father in law jamming a bit last night before dinner. Adam was about ready to fall asleep, I think. Another swim meet tonight, if all goes as planned. BHK and I are going to take Tina with us this time! That means a bit of shopping and dinner tonight too, I expect.

Things have been quite great lately… I think that once I get a good solid gig, I’ll have nothing to complain about at all.

Side note – I’ve agreed to be on the City’s Emergency Preparedness Committee – maybe I can help out CodeRED a bit, and help to insure my region is more prepared in the event of rough tidings… not to mention, possibly network into a gig.

Quite a little stud muffin – he’s very popular with the ladies, especially while being all sporty. He’s really a great guy, and is very talented across the board – Physics, guitar, athletics. If he wants, he could go anywhere or do anything he might choose. He suffers a little bit from teenager-itis, but he’s generally a gentleman and all-around good guy. I’m glad to have him in my family.

DSL issues with verizon continue.. more like customer service issues. They’ve just barely edged ahead of Comcast in the piss-poor service department, playing telephone tree and random disconnect for over 5 days worth of calls.

Flurry or Heavier Squall tomorrow! Snow snow snow, baby! As long as it doesn’t hurt anyone, I’m all for more of the magic white highlighter coloring everything. (plus, being snowed in with the Mrs. is a dandy prospect. We’ve got doughnuts.

Zombie Astronaut is Featuring Ray Bradbury!

Tomorrow is Adam’s swim meet – should be interesting… Adam competing vs Larry’s School.

Dreamt last night about BHK and me being “gun runners” to south of the border… we were storing ensure and other high-vitamin products in the stock… the guns themselves didn’t work, but were easier to bribe past the border patrols rather than food for the hungry. at one point, I though t of making the guns themselves out of chocolate or some sort of dark-colored food, but that was nixed for dream-reasons I don’t recall. I remember clubbing one of the patrolmen with the butt of one of the mock-rifles and having a pinkish milkshake type substance come out… hopefully it was full of strawberry flavored protein shake.
