9106 – Xmas eve

Went to get shots but couldn’t get them.

Drove to Maerten’s – Picked up BHK’s Prezzie, but stopped by Aardvark and got Hacienda.

Stopped at maerten’s then booked it home so BHK could cook mac and cheese and shepherd’s pie for X-mas eve dinner.

Had dinner at in laws with mom and Wilton, Cathy and Dave, Tina and Matt and Larry and Chris.

opened old fashioned crackers and got cute presents and funny crowns ate and ate then played apples to apples and stayed up way too late!S6301029.S6301028.S6301026.S6301025..1224071038.jpg.

9097 – sun

Snow… where is my precious snow? None fell today… just wet ol’ rain.

I don’t mind… I like gray days just fine. All sunshine makes a desert, right?

Bulk of the day was spent doing holiday decorations and prep for my Mother and Wilton coming up for the holidays. I like that tree is all gussied up and has the train underneath. Officially Yuletide now.

Larry and Chris came over and we all slurped some veggie soup. BHK also made a Cheese ball and Chef Boyardee Pizza that was really quite good. The in-laws bugged out early, but we got a little Adam visit for an hour before bedtime. He found the pickle on the Christmas tree in about 3 minutes. I suspect Bugah will find it more rapidly.

The robot is now packing the moniker “Pickle”, at least as a nickname.

We played Wii for a bit – Mario brothers is older than Adam… and he’s going to College. That’s sort of frightening.

Christmas lights, Pye in a Wreath, Newt and the train, Pretzel Walruses, our two favorite new ornaments… robot and ship in a bottle.

Tannenbaum Express-cam will be set up online shortly… probably by midweek.

9096 – sat –

Today seemed both brief and extended at the same time, somehow.

Took off early this morning to snag a few allergy shots, and then we swung by Maerten’s to check out plans for BHK’s ring. I was going to have it be a surprise, but when design considerations came up, I opted for her input… she’s the one that’ll be wearing it after all.

I wonder how many people buy an engagement ring for their spouse, 14 months after the wedding day?

We hashed out a few designs with Heather, and I think that the one that was finalized will be lovely. I’m looking forward to the CAD images sometime this week before the casting. If this one works out well, I think a Mexican Day of the Dead “skull ring” could be next on the list.

Later, we went to the local farm grocer, grabbed lunch and a broad assortment of candy-type stuff to put in X-mas stockings.

The chocolate drops intended for Larry were not destined to survive.

They were, however, delicious. He’ll get other candy, love it and never be the wiser. We’re not bad people.

The in-laws had a little trouble finding the train store, so we met with them for a little bit… Larry and I talked trains while BHK and Chris went to the kids bookstore and got a little treat or two for Em and maybe Bugah.

We parted company – BHK got a flash of brilliance – and we stopped and got the final piece of Chris’s prezzie…. not mentioned in case she’s reading this. (I don’t think she is, but better safe than sorry.)

Following that, we hit our favorite friendly neighborhood gaming store, Aardvark’s – got some goodies for Louise, Cathy and Dave. Added bonus, Mike gave us the Fluxx Party pack and a Larry the Zombie to go with our Looney Labs purchases. Score! I’ve been wanting a radioactive potato, and now we have two! (Larry {the card, not the father-in-law} is the zombie equivalent.)

I think we’ve got everyone covered for presents except for Adam and Matt. That shouldn’t be too traumatic.

I ran out of juice by the end of the day… not sure where all my energy went, unless it was the sugar blues post about 1000 chocolate drops.

9093 – Wednesday

Downright warm today at 61F. I really didn’t even need to wear a jacket today.

I like the word folderol.

I still have a little trouble understanding how Aflac or similar programs could be beneficial to me over and above my other health insurance… it doesn’t seem like it’s of much utility to my situation, but perhaps I’m mistaken. I don’t know it it’s me, or if the folks explaining it sort of missed my personal buttons. (Most of the talk sounded a bit like standard insurance fear-mongering.) The whole medical / insurance system really gets my goat sometimes – there’s always a feel of a protection racket itching in the back of my skull.

Heard through the grapevine that my ex’s home went into foreclosure. I pity her, but I don’t know the whole situation. I hope that she and her family find a good place to crash and get cover… seems like a heck of a thing to happen at Christmas.

Thinking good thoughts about BHK today. She has been working very hard for quite some time on multiple difficult projects. Digging up old records is tough … the chain of information is full of weak links. I remember how annoying it was just to shift information between Comcast and Verizon – slip that same information between state and federal agencies, and it only adds to the mountain of paperwork, receipt of careless service and red tape.

I have the urge to map out my office building (at least the floor I’m on), our house in North Beach, and maybe some of WMATA in a fps engine like counterstrike or half-life, just to do it. Home wouldn’t be a huge undertaking, and I have the layout of the tower… but the subway might be tricky. Given the huge number of mods out there already, it wouldn’t surprise me if it already existed in some rippable form.

I wanted my own radio station when I was in High school… call letters WMBT – wombat radio.

After work, we visited the in-laws for a bit…. watched The Santa Clause. It’s sort of nice to have fun family nearby. Nobody else had seen the film, which was received well enough.

9089 – Saturday –

We woke up fairly early, but not so much that we left on time for the Friendship Trees spot for a Tannenbaum.

The in-laws caught up with us about an hour and a half after we were slotted to leave… some mist made me wonder if we would make it outside before rains came.

In-laws saw the tree they wanted before they even left the car. BHK and I spent a solid span of time roaming the lot looking for just the right one… the gigantic 15-18 footers caught BHK’s eye, but sadly, they wouldn’t fit in the house if we had opted to take ’em home. I thought it’d be cool to plant a live tree outside, but indoors is where the presents and the train will be, so the tree must surely follow. I was having some back trouble, and the uneven ground got me pretty solidly… end result was that we left those grounds without any tree to show for it. Instead, we went by the North Beach Volunteer Fire Department, and spotted one that looked just fine…. it fits just perfectly in the house and is nicely symmetrical and full.

Added bonus, we met a guy named Cheeto (Was a contender for Newton’s name, but not seriously), who shook the tree for us…. and a friendly Freemason by the name of Bobby, who delivered it to our porch.

There was much rejoicing.

We picked up the in-laws who had split from us to go decorate the blue house, and we all flitted over to Deale to snag a bite of lunch (I had grilled veggies on a baguette with a side o’fries, plus diet coke with a splash of cherry soda from the fountain)

After the nosh, a quick stop to visit good deale bluegrass, to peek at a sweet double bass. I wouldn’t much mind playing one, if I had the time to learn it. One thing at a time… bass guitar first.

We started to approach midday, so we headed back to set up our tree… she looks good! Pictures to follow, I’m sure.

After we got the basics in place, we all bounded over to the in-laws, and repeated the process there…. by the time we got to a stopping point, it was already 9ish at night, so it was feeding time again – Subway, this go ’round.

BHK was pooped and slept on the recliner while Larry, Chris and I hung out. We primarily talked trains, photography and printing technology; I fear that we may have bored poor Chris to death. I learned a few things, and got to see some pictures of BHK from when she was maybe five or 6 years old… still cute as a button. Those pictures may also be soon to follow.

Back is a bit better, but still needs work. MRI appointment is forthcoming.

A study from Mental Health America ranks the most depressed states in America. Here they are, ranked from happiest to saddest. (via fallentoad)

The study ranks the 50 states and the District of Columbia based on rates of depression and suicide. Researchers found that states with easier access to mental health resources had lower suicide rates. (see also – Smaller babies grow up to be sadder adults / Study links low birth rate to depression, anxiety later in life)

Depression is a serious medical illness that comes in many forms with a variety of symptoms.
If you have any of the following symptoms for a prolonged period, it may be time to seek help.

  1. Persistent sad or anxious mood
  2. Feelings of hopelessness or pessimism
  3. Feelings of guilt or worthlessness
  4. Loss of interest in hobbies or activities
  5. Fatigue or decreased energy
  6. Difficulty concentrating or making decisions
  7. Insomnia or oversleeping
  8. Changes in appetite or weight
  9. Thoughts of death or suicide
  10. Restlessness or irritability
  11. Headaches or chronic pain

Of the above, I tend meet the qualifications from number 6 (not so much), 10 and 11, though I don’t think that I suffer from depression, rather, physical issues are causing them.

Speaking of which, I went to the doc for a reviewing of the back situation. Aside from the standard “eat better, exercise more” bit, there wasn’t much else to report just yet. I make an appointment for an MRI tomorrow.

9079 – Sat

Nice morning, until I got out of bed, and pulled my back. At that point, I was in extreme pain and after much shrieking and frightening BHK, I took a shower to loosen up a little bit and went to urgent care. I’d say it took me about 45 minutes to work out how to walk from bed to the shower…the pain was pretty significant. Agony is a good word, that sounds about right.

Needless to say, I missed my allergy shots. I get to call on Monday to see what I can do about rescheduling.

After getting looked at, I was given a ‘scrip for an anti-inflammatory and a narcotic to knock me out for when I got home. The 800 mg of Ibuprofen given to me took quite a bit of the edge off, as did the change in position from sitting to standing. I was feeling good enough to grab a bite to eat and a haircut… Ledo’s calzone for me, and BHK nom nom’ed on some tortellini. We shared the spicy ravioli appetizer… probably the highlight of the meal.

Seen in the parking lot, after my trip to ouchie-land: if clicked and embiggened – License plate reads “Sons Confederate Veterans
1201071458.jpg
How do those folks rate a plate? I guess money talks. It is interesting to note that they don’t want any connection to the KKK around the Confederacy… The sad fact is that when I see a confederate southern cross “battle flag“, whatever else has happened, I assume the worst. Despite the wealth of history and culture… it just smacks of white supremacist behavior to me. I have to wonder if the owners of such plates get into or out of more scrapes with other people… Is a police officer more or less likely to give a ticket instead of a warning? If they drive through different parts of town, do folks cheer or give him the finger?

I wonder the same about pro-life or pro-choice bumper stickers and plates, too.

First Christmas Present arrived… From Kev, via Amazon (His isn’t due to arrive in Guantanamo until after his item is released on the 18th… not telling what it is here, in case he reads this. I haven’t peeked at the invoice, so my present is a surprise, too.

Rested at the in-laws – Chinese food and we watched Flyboys. Not a bad flick. It fed my desire to see biplanes vs triplanes in arial combat, so there you go. I was pleased to see a zeppelin, disappointed that they took a huge pile of liberties with history. (I didn’t mind that so many “Red Barons” were there… but it was pretty goofy from a historical context)

A yearly thing I’ve been doing for a while now… Not always on his birthday.

Things about my dad at 38, as far as I remember: The Year was 1983 – Married, but signs were there that it was on the way out. Living in Boynton Beach, Florida. Had a son in High School(14), and another in the last year of elementary(10). Favorite movie in ’83 was likely Vacation – I think he liked it more than Octopussy, which is what might’ve been my next guess. Both He and his wife were working as Real Estate agents – Residential, primarily. Financially pretty well off – not living in a mansion, but a 4 bedroom, 2 bath house in the softer ‘burbs of Boynton Beach, Florida. The Family had three cars – two for showing property to clients and a bang-around one for the weekends and taking kids places. Sundays were more often spent with the family as a unit rather than everyone going separate ways – Saturday it seemed like the afternoon was for chores and then “Every man for himself.” That year, we went on a shorter vacation to Orlando – Stopped for a day at Kennedy Space Center, where he was rolled around in a wheelchair most of the time due to horsing around on his youngest son’s skateboard… and landing flat on his back. He always had back issues, and this didn’t help matters. Despite this, he was a trooper and was rolled around both Disney and the Space center with very little by way of complaint. (I wonder what happened to my plastic shuttle with “real working cargo bay doors” that I got there?) Friends of his were: Greg at the Auto Shop (Drinking Buddy), Brother in law Bob (His sister’s Husband, about 10 years his junior), Assorted Business contacts. Fond of Watching Documentaries on TV, especially Jacques Cousteau and WWII / Korea / ‘Nam stuff. Slowed down hunting about this time, but still went fishing regularly with Bob and his sons. Cooking Methods preferred are the Charcoal Grill, or Gas if he was in a hurry. Fast food was generally pub or local fare… french fries and a burger. Preferred to Watch TV on the couch, but to read outdoors. Had the kids do yard work and wash the car – sometimes followed up with the trimmer or a wax job himself. Enjoyed Fast Cars, and driving them at speeds not permitted by law. Lost his spleen in an automobile accident when he was 18, and never did learn his lesson. Alcoholic Beverage of Choice was a Budweiser. Smoked an occasional pipe of tobacco, ceased to smoke cigarettes, but occasionally rolled a joint. Kept about $5,000 on hand in $100 bills in a fireproof strongbox in the closet, along with his stash. The box’s lock was easily picked with a paperclip.

Some of his Strengths: Brilliant at math, History, and how things are put together, strong sense of fun and horseplay. Would walk into a pool of lava without complaining if it was for his kids. Charming, knew how to sell. Excellent at debate. Knew how to box, and how to fight dirty. A lot of upper body strength. Good teacher.

Some of his Weaknesses: Liked the Beer quite a bit, stubborn as a mule, no depth perception, sometimes a little hard of hearing (TV up *VERY* loud), Easily goaded into combat, either verbal or physical – though he rarely threw the first punch. Ruthless, and bloodthirsty when angered. Impatient if he had to repeat himself more than once. (Due to his being hard of hearing, everyone had to repeat themselves to him frequently.)

Random Celebrity Factoid: used to spar and box with Marvin Hagler at the YMCA, back in Brockton, MA in the Petronelli brothers gym, and they’d have coffee and Doughnuts afterward at the Mister Donut. This was about 1969-1970.

A comparison –

Scotto at 38: – 2007 – Happily starting the second year of his marriage, living in Maryland and working around Washington DC area. Wonderful Wife, 2 cool kitties, aged 4 and 8. (Favorite movie in ’83 was Wargames, even more than Return of The Jedi.) Favorite movie this year – Possibly Hot Fuzz, or maybe Meet The Robinsons in 3D… unless I’m forgetting something. Works as a the Manager/Director of IT at a Trade Association involving the freight industry. Financially is recovering pretty well from a move and going into a new career. Living in a 2-bedroom (3, if you count the office), 2 bath home in North Beach, MD – a “bedroom community” of DC’s. His family has one car, but that works pretty well, considering that he commutes by bus and train back and forth to work. Weekends are spent relaxing, doing some chores, and going on walkabout / drive-about with his wife, Both happily joined at the hip. This past years vacation was really his honeymoon trip along the East coast through a few Ripley’s Believe it or Not locations, including, but not limited to Myrtle Beach through St. Augustine. Saw his first snow in over 20 years a few months ago. Still doesn’t drive a vehicle, though DC traffic doesn’t look to be as bad as Miami’s. Recently Reconnected to A few High school cronies, but hasn’t kept up too well with them, or with his ex-coworkers in Florida. Current up-close and personal friends (i.e., talk on the phone at least every other week, or visit in person) are Danny (old time gaming buddy, lives in FL), in-laws Larry & Chris (Live about 5 minutes away, and are always game to visit and hang out), and of course the aforementioned BHK and the kitties as wonderful loves, lights and companions. Doesn’t do much outside the office with current coworkers – everyone seems to have their own life going on. Fond of watching science fiction / docu-science cooking shows / some sideways action-sit-coms like The Office, Chuck, Ugly Betty and so on. Cooking methods preferred are Grilling outside, or enjoying his wife’s masterpieces. Fast food is ok now and then, but as a vegetarian, prefers dining out on Mexican, Chinese or Italian food to most other fare. Has had back surgery twice, second time was to repair scar tissue from the prior. Herniated disks in the back, had an nerve damage down and along the left leg. Non-smoker, doesn’t do any recreational drugs. Alcoholic beverage of choice right now is Strongbow Cider, though woodchuck is good, too. Doesn’t keep large sums of money on his person or in the house… ATMs and bank cards work just fine for now.

Some of His Strengths: Attacks problems from a different perspective than usual, excellent with children and animals, willing to compromise on most disagreements where it is fair, strong sense of rhythm and beat, can be very sympathetic to people / animals in need of help. Courteous. Good at debate. Reliable. Knows how to fight, if need be. Protective of loved ones.

Some of his Weaknesses: Can be moody when overtired or sick, prone to sentimentality but mercy is wildly variable depending on the situation, aggressively dislikes “practical jokes” or pop-up surprises. Memory is sometimes poor if items aren’t written down. Poor runner – especially now with the back/leg issues. Messy housekeeper.

Random Celebrity Factoid: Once met Bill Daily (friend of an old employer) – nice guy, laid back, I was stunned that he was as old as he is… (mostly because before then, I’d only seen him in TV reruns). We chatted about radio stuff, primarily.

Again, for any who care – “Black Friday” is *not* the busiest shopping day of the year. (Though it is generally in the top 10)

Today in a nutshell:

Allergy shots – quick like a wink.

Greek Festival – crafts were interesting – more art glass and felting.

  • More nifty to me was the interior of the church.
  • Jesus has a little smudge on his face.
  • Gold Bells
  • Augustine and Helen Mosaic.
  • Devil and Squid.
  • Merman and angels? No answer from guide. Photos to follow. Squid says “I don’t care! I don’t care!”. Satan is balding, but has braided pigtails.
  • Marble vs Ivory.

Homestead Gardens – 3 new ornaments.

  • robot – retrobot reminds BHK of me.
  • love bugs – BHK and I all snuggly.
  • popcorn – our fondness for movies.

Preacher cookies at the in-laws. (Chocolate cookie, made with oats. yummy.)

nap, no sleep, just rest.

Picked up dinner for the crew, and we saw will at the Chinese food place.. is he making a resurgence? He seemed to have seen us, and appeared to hide out in the Roland’s while we got our food. We saw him head back to the Chinese food place as we were driving off.

Back at in laws for General Tso’s Tofu and a viewing of Christmas Vacation – I dozed off a few times.

Home again, and deep sleeps.

A year away from ACIM. Who’d have thought it? Good to have moved on, though I’m very proud of the good I accomplished while I was there.

I’m so thankful that I’m here now… I have a loving family, some nice local friends, a good job… let alone the default things like a roof over my head, regular feedings and the ability to read!

To hear BHK and me gobbling, listen to last year’s holiday entry.

Pictures to color! Embiggen at will!

Ze has a good talk about thanks, from a year ago.

Off to the in-laws with BHK… she prepared a quorn “turkey” roast, veggies, cake, stuffing, and all manner of goodness. I don’t know how it could possibly beat the shepherds pie she made for me last night, but if anyone can do it, she can. I’m truly blessed to be married to such a warm, loving, beautiful, brilliant woman who can cook, too!

Baconsalt – Our mission in life is to make everything taste like real, delicious bacon, without the fat or calories. (Vegetarian friendly!) I like that they call themselves “Bacontrepreneurs”

I tend to agree with Mr. Fry’s assessment about Americans (as opposed to folks in the UK) and debate. Just because I disagree with you, it’s not an attack on you, personally. (Scroll down to “Getting Overheated).

Newtnewtie and Pyepyecam1 have been activenewtcam … BHK sent me samples of lunchtime travels.

I’m glad Newtcam continues to get a good workout!

They’re getting more and more tolerant and friendly with one another – see below.

Just because someone isn’t on my “friends list” here on LJ, it doesn’t mean I’m not reading other ones… I wonder why folks are so surprised when I comment on something that they wrote and I don’t auto link them? There are a lot of reasons not to… maybe I don’t want them reading my “friend’s only” posts… or maybe they write so often that it floods out my aggregator. Or Maybe I’m just nosy, and want to peek in on random people from time to time, rather than every day.

meme from talonvaki

1. When you looked at yourself in the mirror today, what was the first thing you thought?
“Teeth are cool… I wonder how you’d replace them with Gemstones, like in Miracleman’s Adrian Cream”

2. How much cash do you have on you?
Very little. Maybe $.045? I’m overdue to hit the ol’ ATM

3. What’s a word that rhymes with “DOOR?”
Score!

4. Favorite planet?
Earth works best for me… excluding the obvious, I like Uranus, because it has a sideways axis, rings, and is a childish word-joke for some folks.

5. Who is the 4th person on your missed call list on your cell phone?
Larry, about a week ago. Probably trying to call me re:dinner plans.

6. What is your favorite ring on your phone?
one sounds a bit like dance of the sugarplum fairy… gentle, but so quiet I can hardly hear it.

7. What shirt are you wearing?
Green longsleeved button-down

8. Do you “label” yourself?
Why do I see finger-quotes on this one? I tend to label myself as the helper-guy or the nice guy.

9. Name the brand of your shoes you’re currently wearing?
Crocs, baby. closest thing to barefoot, these days.

10. Bright or Dark Room?
I prefer a room that’s pretty shaded, unless I’m trying to read.

11. What do you think about the person who took this survey before you?
We have pretty divergent interests – makes for interesting reading. Never really met her.

13. What were you doing at midnight last night?
ZZzzZZZzzz.

14. What did your last text message you received on your cell say?
BHK letting me know she’s out front, so I can pick up the cake for work!

15. Where is your nearest 7-11?
A 10 minute drive from here. There’s a little unaffiliated convenience store about 5 or so blocks away, though.

16. What’s a word that you say a lot?
Cheers!

17.Who told you he/she loved you last?
BHK!

18. Last furry thing you touched?
Pye… or maybe Newt. Does my goatee count?

19. How many drugs have you done in the last three days?
Caffiene and vitamins are about the only drug-like substances entering my system, short of perscriptions

20. How many rolls of film do you need developed?
I have a few pictures on cd/hd that would be pretty printed out… but no film.

21. Favorite age you have been so far?
Hmm… I liked myself most physically at about 21. I rather like where I am mentally and socially, now.

22. Worst enemy?
I don’t have any active enemies, that I know of.

23. What is your current desktop picture?
BHK at St. Aug on our honeymoon.

24. What was the last thing you said to someone?
I love you – to BHK.

25. If you had to choose between a million bucks or to be able to fly what would it be?
Fly… how? Like superman, effortlessly? On the surface… I’d take flight. If I lived in the “real world”, I’d fear all kinds of crazy scientists and the like trying to track me down and dissect me for my secret… if that’s the case, I’ll take the cash.

26. Do you like someone?
Sure, I like lots of people.

27. The last song you listened to?
Alice’s Restaurant – Arlo Guthrie

Bro released from the pokey… just in time for Thanksgiving. I wonder if he’ll be in attendance with the Momster and Wilt? Right now he’s in in Delray Beach, with plans to be heading for Sebastian soon. I wish him the absolute best of luck. My expectations are low, but hopes are high.

[EDIT: via momster- Hi There! Derek looks great! He’s got a good tan, body in good shape and clear headed.I gave him your cell for after 5pm.He is going around to get a phone, food stamps, medicare and go to Delray to see if he can get the $$.He said if he gets the cash he will head north,if not he will look for work here.I asked him to call me tonight about the day. I invited him to join us for dinner tomorrow (we will pay) but he said he would feel uncomfortable with Ana Richard and Don. I understood. Let you know what happens..really was good to see him well, hope it continues.]

So… Thanksgiving tomorrow… 4 day weekend! Hoody hoo!

Last night, we went to the Annapolis Mall for a lovely date night of Dinner and a Movie… I was feeling a bit like a teenager, as we went to the food court… I got Panda Express while BHK picked up some Chik-fil-a. The place is really starting to spin up for holiday shopping… I fear the crowds will be thick as chilled molasses once Thanksgiving has come and gone.

Beowulf. Entertaining in 3-d… I’m not sure how well it’d hold up in a 2-d theater. That said, I liked it for the most part. I had a few difficulties with the Thicker Dane Accents, especially in regards to Grendel and his mother. I didn’t realise that Neil Gaiman was part of the writing process… that would explain some of the more comedic moments of the film, I suspect. The 3-d bits really made it work, additionally, the amount of eye trauma (or threat of same) made me enjoy it more than I thought. The benefit of expecting a total stinker helped, too. I wasn’t expecting so much motion capture and the broad range of “fine human detail” to “Shrek” characters so easily mixed.

Almost better than the movie were previews for movies I want to see… some more than others.

Cloverfield – I like giant monster movies, but I’m worried that this one is jumping the shark or pulling snakes on a plane sort of maneuver.. .too much and too little released at the same time… It’s not getting my interest so much as it’s irritating me. Still… giant monster movie. I’ll see it.

I am Legend based on the novel – (Basically The Omega Man… the mutated seem more interesting in this version, though.) From Warner Bros. – “Robert Neville (Will Smith) is a brilliant scientist, but even he could not contain the terrible virus that was unstoppable, incurable, and man-made. Somehow immune, Neville is now the last human survivor in what is left of New York City and maybe the world. For three years, Neville has faithfully sent out daily radio messages, desperate to find any other survivors who might be out there. But he is not alone. Mutant victims of the plague — The Infected — lurk in the shadows… watching Neville’s every move… waiting for him to make a fatal mistake. Perhaps mankind’s last, best hope, Neville is driven by only one remaining mission: to find a way to reverse the effects of the virus using his own immune blood. But he knows he is outnumbered… and quickly running out of time”

Journey 3-D – based on another classic – Journey to the Center of the Earth – I’m a sucker for 3-d Movies, and if it has Dinosaurs and Xenobiology in it… so much the better.

A 3-d version of Gaiman’s Coraline – Pretty nifty, and probably very well-suited for the screen. I suspect BHK will enjoy it quite a lot.

National Treasure 2 – I’m looking forward to this one.. especially given my current environs. Plus, Ben Gates must have quite a resource pool after the first movie. I thought for sure that I’d never see a sequel, and I’m glad I’m wrong. I suspect strongly that it won’t be a stinker.

Golden Compass – Based on a book series that I’ve never read. Still… three words: Armored Polar Bears. Seriously, why not just call it “Scotto, come see this movie. We’ll buy the corn for you and everything.”

Sweeney Todd – We’ll see it, but I suspect it won’t shine a light as bright as our expectations. Cannibalism, insanity and revenge with a straight-razor on Burton sets should be pretty fun, regardless. We’ll see how the singing side of things will go. It’s a shame we didn’t get to see the stage production back in July, but who knows? Hopefully it’ll boost the play’s popularity in more venues locally. We were pretty thrilled to see it as a stage play almost right after we’d seen the stage production on DVD.1120071852.jpg

In response to yesterday’s entry about BHK’s ring, some superstitions about lucky / not so lucky stone types.

Today was a nice one… we raked some leaves, the in-laws came over to do a little yard work with us… Pye came out with me on the leash for a little bit.

Not much to report, aside from the gutters are cleaner, now… and the leak isn’t really a leak, but an impact from something, probably around halloween on the side of the house.

Last of the hot peppers harvested for the year – next garden is going to be even better than our first, I bet! What I thought was going to be a “vanity garden” certainly bore a huge bounty.

Once it got dark, we hit Mama Lucias for supper… veggie pizza for Chris and Me, while Larry and BHK enjoyed pepperoni.

We returned, played a little Rayman, and then hit the sack after watching our
yardwork, dinner at mamma lucias, rayman, caught up office and old eps of news radio.

In a nutshell –

Slept in a little, but we made it for my allergy shots by 10am.

After the obligatory injections, a quit stop at starbucks for a lackluster peppermint latte – we won’t go back there again. The Giant across the street has a starbucks inside, and if I’m going to pay $5 for a coffee, I’ll get one that’s excellent – not that poorly assembled mess I had for breakfast. The sugar cookie was ok… I think the fac tthat it was shaped like a penguin added flavor.

Headed out to Maerten’s – went to look at BHK’s ring lemon quartz in white gold… sort of our own lime-vanilla ice. The staff there was very kind and helpful; Jamie in particular had more than a few good ideas about setting the stone and we’ll be meeting for sketches soon. I’m glad we could find a place that we like and trust so much to do what we want.

went to Aardvark – picked up a few fun little items to fool with in the days and years ahead.

Easter Island (I love the game pieces ) Reminds me more than a little of Laser Battle, but with added nifty bits here and there.

This game speculates that the easter island statues were, in fact, beam weapons created by two very powerful wizards. These wizards used the statues in a giant game, with the island itself as the board. You are now one of those wizards…

Easter Island lets you place your statues and move them into position. Then, when everything is ready, call upon the power of the Sun to topple your opponent’s statues and thus your opponent.

If fishes were wishes – again, the game pieces are cute.

“Players are fishermen, trying to catch the most valuable fish and sell them in the market for the best prices. With limited space for storing caught fish, players must use their wits to get the right fish to market at the right times. This is where the granting of wishes is most helpful. Just catch the fish who will grant the wish you want, throw it back, and you get your wish. Sounds simple, but the game does require a bit of thinking and planning. The wishes can help you increase the value of fish when sold, grant you extra storage space, and several other useful things.”

Spree – Shopping, gunfire and violence. How could I resist a Cheapass Game we didn’t already have?

“Springtime. Midnight. The Mall is beckoning.

Welcome to LeGrand Mall, the oldest and most poorly secured indoor mall in the world. It’s as airtight as the Titanic and as solid as a wet paper bag. This place just begs to be robbed.

Enter you, and your infantile collection of friends. It’s not enough to simply loot this mall. No, you have to do it with a certain amount of flair. Which boils down to an all-night looting race, with shopping carts, flashlights, and guns.

The object? Park your car, dash into the mall, and load your shopping cart with the goodies on your list. You can snitch stuff out of the stores if you like, but it’s even more fun (and easier) to steal it from your friends. And that would explain why you’re carrying a huge gun.”

– includes a variant of “a bunch of extra violence we’ve never tested”, such Running People Over.

In addition to our normal game purchases… BHK convinced me (with very little arm-twisting) to pick up some comics – all miniseries at the moment.

Current story lines about –

Started getting hungry and went on a quest for a Pizza Hut… Stuffed Crust pie, in particular. When all we could locate were take-out places, we chanced upon the Do Dah Deli. Good find. BHK had a foot-long corn dog and shared pinwheel fries with me – I had a build your own sammich…. I just went with an assortment of cheeses, sprouts and veggies with honey mustard. It was all quite tasty, though there was a mix-up with our order. Easily fixed, and no worries.

Side Track Hobbies – I think we’ve found a place to fill Larry (and my own) Model train needs. The place looks tiny from the outside, but once you’re in there, it’s warehouse-level storage of all sorts of stuff, from z-scale on up to big ol’ yard stuff. The Marklin Selection was really quite nice. I wish I’d had access to this kind of loot when I was tabletop gaming… I bet Danny’d have a field day with dioramas.

Lastly, we hit the Children’s Bookstore next door. We got more than a little bit of Christmas Shopping done there.. not all for kids, either. Bugah and Em were the highlights, however. Once the lady running the place found out that I did computer stuff and having a little discussion of her fondness of Mac over PC (I feel it’s a religious discussion… only seldom to people get converted one way or the other) – I showed her how to upgrade both her MacBook and PC workstation’s software. She was an older lady, maybe in her early 80’s, but was very vital and possessed of strong opinoins and beliefs.

Comments of note from her included commentary on Univeristy of Maryland / Virginia Tech teachers from the 1950s, fairy dolls, and her firm beliefs about Macs vs PCs. However her most memorable comment to me was – “Pomonkey indians are in a terrible state, especially since they started intermarrying with colored folks”.

(In early Colonial days, Pomonkey was known as “Pomonkey Indian Land,” for it was heavily populated by “Pomonceaks” as John Smith called them on his map of 1608. Pomonkey is a plateau of land surrounded by the Great Mattawoman Swamp. The Indians had followed many trails from every point in Southern Maryland for the rich hunting and fishing in Pomonkey. These converging trails became roads for the European settlers. Hence, Pomonkey very early became a site of local commerce.)

A slight Soda-spill later, and we headed on home, with a brief stopover at the in-laws. We caught up with My name is earl, and then hit the sack.

Not a bad day, all in all.
