dork mode, activate!

http://www.geocities.com/st_uss_enterprise/episodes.html – via Joel ‘Hello Taxi’

Here are the stories of the first four episodes of Enterprise.

pictures are elsewhere on the same site….I like the lo-tech tonka toy designs.

Some things of note – The sickbay doesn’t have those silly workout blocks over it, and I wonder about Porthos, Archer’s canine companion. So.. um.. what is that doctor? Looks likt that little elfy guy from voyager.

I especially like the middle top pic, very old school, and neat.

dork mode… deactivate.

hey! I said deactivate!

Now!

hm.

oh yeah, I want to see all the new superhero shows, .too

mutant x(featuring heroes with density control, telempathy (emotion sense/control), electricity blaster, animal gal(sounds like another pesky cat-girl…see dark angel.), and a smartie leader… or how I like to refer to them – vision (or stone boy & phantom girl’s love child), saturn girl, lightinging lad, chameleon, and brainiac 5) , live action tick and smallville too.

dorkus malorkus.

bring back the lone gunmen!

ok. it’s out of my system.

MORE RED DWARF!

ok. done, really. Just letting you know that this is the first time I’ve wanted to watch more than one new tv show, in a loong time. (Since descovering cable. Or ABC’s cartoon line up of dynomutt, clue club, and jabberjaw… was grape ape that same year, too? I was maybe 7 at the time.)

all done

nite night.

sweet dreams.

user #3397 – we now get about 2100 new users every *day*

LJ has a different feel now… I wonder if it’s the difference between a small village and a big city. I can remember wayyy back when it was new to me, and I was just looking for a place to link to my web page, and keep an ongoing journal of my thoughts online. ( directed me here after looking at her site. I’m glad I went… that was the only reason I went with LJ, as it was the first one I’d heard of that was comfortable. Blogger at that time was still sticky, and LJ had a spiffier client, plus a build in friends and comments feature.) I miss a few of the features that have been (temporarily, I hope!) sacrificed to allow for more growth, like seeing where a person has recently posted, the regional search engine, etc… it was nice to peek around and see who in your neighborhood was posting. I think you could break it down by age, too… nice to see (forgive my ageist ways) folks 19 and up in my zone, who have gaming as an interest…it’d make organizing a group very simple.

I’d love for the gp search engine and picture host to come online soon, preferably after they get the machinery to work properly again. all the weirdness is floating out at http://www.scottobear.com/lj/ right now, unindexed, just hovering. it’s begun to add up, over the year+ of entries… and I really don’t put as many pictures in as some folks do.

my first LJ icon

I’m reading my entries from this time last year.

I was good! These days, there’s not enough desire to write. Seeds aren’t being planted as much.

how to fix it ? I don’t know… but I’ll go through my notebooks, and see if I can’t polish some old pebbles in the meantime. I think part is just getting into the habit.

thoughts about gaming

There are some things I *do not* miss about gaming.

Gamers, as a whole, can be a loathsome lot. (Much like the rest of humanity, you might say….if you’re a cynic…) First off, I’m not a ‘serious’ gamer. I see it as an excuse to get together with folks of a like mind, and over junk food and good times, tell a good story, and maybe stage a little combat on a hex-map, involving miniatures and a nifty prop or two. I can comfortably skip a week of gaming, and go to a movie, play cards or do some other social thing instead. I’m not hard-core.

That said, let me break down ‘the gamers that bug me’.

1. They wrecked Monty Python for me. (And almost, the princess bride) Pure and simple. I’d never seen holy grail. I’d heard every pesky, probably originally witty line of the film a dozen dozen (that’s 144 for you counting at home. a gross) times before ever seeing it on film. the result? Something that’s supposedly very funny is reflected on by me as passable, but no great shakes. Honestly, I think Life of Brian is a far better film.

2. There’s no question that there’s a sort of “dork aura” that surrounds some gamers and turns them into spasming little social retards. We’ve all had the occasional discussion about why this is, exactly, and what causes it. I don’t think you can fully codify it, though. It’s more like there’s a whole bunch of different personality traits, no single one of which is necessarily offensive on its own, but in certain combinations they cause this regression into infantilism.

3. Personal hygiene. Bathe Regularly, please?

Memories of con folk –
I run into my first Smelly in the dealers’ room today. He lumbers around the corner as I’m passing the WotC castle – morbidly obese, covered with a slick of sweat, an expression on his face like he’s just suffered a massive head injury and is now watching the great unknown come to him out of the lighted tunnel. One second after I pass him, his wake hits me, and I literally retch. Right there in the middle of a crowd of people, I lean against the wall and make a horrible face. It was embarrassing but completely unintentional – I just couldn’t help it.

Poor hygiene is the perennial Con joke, of course – How do you get a bunch of gamers to agree on something? Threaten them with soap. But actually I’ve been pleasantly surprised at the nonodorous nature of the crowds. This guy made up for all I’d missed. Someone like that can’t be explained away by mere social ineptitude; I would not be surprised to learn that Mr. Stinky is to some degree or another mentally ill. You just can’t get like that without some fundamental disconnect between yourself and the rest of the world. I’ve hung out with homeless people who smelled better than that.

I’ve gamed with some folk that really had a sickening funk about them. it was so bad, I used it as a valid reason to quit, and later, to check to see if I was to enter a new group… If I can smell a person’s reek, I’d just as soon go home and read a nice book inside my own fragrance, thanks.

4. Rules Lawyers. I don’t mean people who can quote rules from the air, or take time to look ’em up. Those folks are generally very helpful. I’m referring to folks that dance and debate around a rule-set to make an event go their way. (and usually go another way in a similar situation for the enemy). That’s not fun, that’s just annoying.

5. Folks who take the whole thing Waaaaay too seriously. I’ve had players in my group *Flip out*upon finding out that someone else’s character had died.

Ok, Time out. another description for Role-playing games is ‘cooperative storytelling’. It’s a story. That’s it. I can understand enjoying a role… but come on. Do you threaten breakdown when a character in your favorite book dies? It’s a valid plot point… see Romeo & juliet, or countless other tales of folks dying heroically or romantically. This is a game. The weirdest thing to me about this is they often also fall into a very strong reality haze. see the following.

6. (almost 5b) Folks who Identify maybe a little *too* much with the role. Ok, Now some folks are method actors. I’m not. These are the folks that allow personal reality to slip focus, to varying degrees of badness.

Example – If you’re a graceless, nonathletic fumblethumbs afraid of butterflies… (gosh, I’m glad she doesn’t read this journal), it’s perfectly natural to want to play a pantherlike, limber, master thief and assassin (as another side note… why do girls *love* to play master thieves and assassins so much? Dang!) Coming to the game dressed as the part… well, for me, since it’s not a larp, I think it’s interesting, but a little weird. Same person plays the same sort of character for a long time in assorted games….and starts buying her own presskit. No… I’m sorry, young lady. (At the time, I think she was 33? Well older than my 27) . You’re not a ninja/master of sorcery/acrobat. you play one in a game. Bragging that you can fade into another reality space doesn’t make you cool… it makes you at the least… Comical. at the worst, delusional.

even my buddy Dan is not exempt from this… although I prefer to hope that he did it as a joke rather than something else… Crossing the street holding his arms up to stop cars, and exclaiming “Nothing an stop MAN OF IRON!!!” Always gave me the heebie-geebies. I rarely chastised him for it at the time, because the once or twice that I did seemed to amuse him, and egg him on more. (I know he reads my journal here sometimes…I wonder what he’ll say to me about my bringing it up )

What do you folks think? What do you especially like/dislike about gaming? Can someone explain to me why the reality and socially impaired gravitate to the hobby, and cause so much bad press and bad playtime for the rest of us?

miniMAX – Scotto’s PC

egame- 1999, live – 1996

miniMAX

Life’s always been a little odd for Will Piper. At seven, he won a science fair
prize for showing that meta-abilities can exist in plant life. (Sadly, the
experiment was lost after the fern in question found a suitable ‘host’ to
control, and fly it to somewhere in South America. The pilot returned with no
memory of the incident.) At twelve, he and his younger brother (six at the time)
inexplicably stopped a bank robbery by blinding the robber with Fire
extinguisher spray & locking him in the vault. Events like those happen to Will
on a regular basis… this is not to say regular things don’t happen to him, but
it seems that oddities are more frequent with him around. He’s a product o f a
boy’s club style family. (His mother died when he was 13, leaving behind a very
busy father, and a younger brother.) Will thrived when he took on the household
responsibilites, acting as cook & maintenance for the family, as well as tutor
and confidant to his younger brother. Aside from the occasional peanut-butter
omelette (Which younger brother August enjoys eating…), Will did a great job
keeping the family together and maintaining excellent grades at school.
Excelling in science, Will got a scholarship to U Penn, and later was recruited
by Sabretech to pursue his theory about loosening the bonds surrounding matter
(Desolidification) surrounding matter to allow for safe, unhindered movement
from place to place. Cars never need crash, police need never be shot, and
freight trains could fit dozens of cargo cars overlapping in the space of just
one. The procedure involved a chemical bath of the object, and subjecting it to
a ‘phase-altering’ radiation. Unfortunately this experiment never came to
fruition, as on the fifth day of testing, the laboratory building suffered some
sort of electrical surge, exploding the containment tank, and dousing visiting
brother August, a lab Chimpanzee and Will with an upsettingly large amount of
the chemical. After a quick trip to the emergency room, and showing no ill
effects, both of them began exhibiting a high level of control over the
molecules in their own body. The chimp somehow gained a much higher intelligence
as well. (One guess is the Neurons of his brain formed new connections and
‘jumpers’ as a result of the accident. INT. of about 13-15), and communicates
via a hand powered voice box on his chest. (acts as Will’s Lab assistant, now.)
Will, by extending or contracting the distance between his atomic structure can
shrink to a small, physically dense man of about 4 inches tall and grow to a
powerful giant of nearly 3 or four stories. August’s abilities are not similar
to Will’s, he can bridge seemingly empty gaps in space with a thought. August
has since gone to boarding school to learn to control his abilities. Shortly
after the accident, Will left Sabretech (and destroyed the notes he had
there) when it was revealed that the lab was making weapons for a terrorist
group. Hired by Vanguard he and the ape (Who has taken the name Owen, and under
sentient beasts law, exists as a citizen) continue work in subatomic physics and
molecular biology there. Eventually Sabretech came looking for him, to take
notes back, and to have him build weaponry for them. He refused, and instead
decided to take the law into his own hands to destroy the lab. Donning a costume
and building a few items that would help in the attack, Will (as miniMAX)
infiltrated the lab’s complex, made sure no people were there, and laid waste to
the computer & written weaponry information. No longer safe at Vanguard’s labs
in Hershey, Will and Owen transferred to the ABE area branch within the last 3-4
days. After getting a taste of pummeling bad guys, Will has decided to devote a
serious portion of his time tracking down the baddies, and seeing to it that
they get picked up by the rightful authorities. (Once fully trained, he hopes to
send for his brother, and work as a team. That, and he misses the little
booger.) A side effect of his molecular shifting ablitites, Will takes more
damage from electro-magnetic attacks.

The other players would know of a blue-suited giant crimefighter with a gadget
bent. (I don’t imagine the shrinking would make the papers as much, except that
he seems to manage to leave the scene very quickly, and he does wear a silver
jetpack lately.) Other things known would be he used to appear in Hershey, but
is now in ABE, is known to put protecting innocents in front of capturing
criminals… has medical skills to some degree. Apparently has a flippant but
friendly attitude to non-violent types and authorities, and is seemingly appaled
by violent folk.

Appearance-wise, he’s a handsome man, with the build of an an athlete who
engages in regular workouts. Sandy-brown hair, cut short for comfort, low
maintenance style. Eyes are blue. If I had to pick a look, I’d go with Gil
Kane’s Hal Jordan (Green Lantern) about 1965 or so. Think Johnny Weismeuller
without the stupid look on his face. In costume, he wears a Blue & black
jumpsuit (akin to a S.H.E.I.L.D. uniform, with black knee-boots, long Black
gloves & a black riot helmet w/mirrored visor for keeping the identity a
secret. An ‘elevator-like’ logo on his chest, with a green tringle pointing
up over a red one pointing down, on a yellow oval. (He keeps the costume shrunk
on his person, in a pocket…about half the size of Ken-doll clothes…when
changing, he shrinks down, takes a half phase and grows to fill.) When not in
costume, he usually wears polo-style shirts, Khaki pants. In the lab that’s
augmented with safety goggles and a lab coat.

Help! Help! Here come the Bears!

In The Wonderland Zoo,
There are certain bears who,
Stay at home every night,
Never quarrel or fight,
Hey! We don’t even bite!

Hair BearBubi BearSquare BearHi!

Fodder for a new icon or three or four. It’s nearly 30 years later, and I’m still trying to figure out the invisible three-man (three bear) motorcycle.

the guys on the invisible bike

I talked to my brother last night, aroud 11pm, midnight…. they got a windows cd, but still have a defective sound card. next weekend I’ll bring one of the spares up and set him tright… he really want to play hellcab, and some of the other games. I know how annoying it can be to work with a hobbled machine. Note to self, send off mail for assorted mailfolks today. I have treats for a few people to drop at the post office.

Sakes, Monday again. Makes sense…the weekend was good, but didn’t seem too short. Well, best be off on my daily routine. Going walkies, then a nice shower before dressing for work. see you kids later on.

I have perhaps 20-25 homemade burned CD’s of old time radio… (Jack Benny, The Shadow, Dragnet, Sgt. Preston of the Yukon, etc). I figure about 11ish hours apiece. I can’t believe I’ve listened to all of them , and am now restarting from the beginning of the stack. I’d estimate I listen to about 2-4 hours a day, after folks go home… My Office-mate isn’t big on 1930s-1950s variety stuff. I can honestly say, that there’s a pile of quality entertainment on those CD’s. I’m not sure why my tastes run to nostalgia from before I was born.. it seems a little more honest, and not quite so… oh, I’m not sure. I’d just much rather listen to an episode of Suspense than Watch Buffy the Vampire Slayer, even though they share a lot of elements. Weird Science, Horror, Fantasy… but without some of the more ‘modern TV’ trappings. Maybe because it’s sound only.. you can fill in your own special effects, character appearances, and I think they deliver a more solid story base sometimes. Also, you can have a show about only one or two people (Like the Shadow, and Margo Lane) and not know what/who the bad guy is in a mystery, or who might get killed. I think the hitchhikers guide is better as a radio show, than a tv miniseries, too (although both were quite fun). Added Bonus, you can listen in the dark, in bed, eyes closed.

Odds are good that the vast majority of folks today rarely listen to anything aside from music or talk stations on the radio anymore… and I think that’s sort of a shame. Drama, comedy and so on. Radio plays are a thing of the past… admittedly some of them should stay there, but there’s a lot of potential for good stuff, even as webcasts. http://prairiehome.org/ does webcasts of the one exception I know. Prairie Home companion is nice… music, comedy, drama, and homespun stuff, to the tune of our current age. I actually tune in once a week to hear the fresh stuff. It’s good. (The website’s better, because you can pick and choose the stuff you want to listen to during the show… So I can Jump right to News from lake Woebegon and Guy Noir.) Plus they have show archives that go waaaaaay back to the mid 90’s if you can’t get enough of it. (I’ve listened to them all, a little at a time… usually a classic episode after listening to a particularly good regular show.)

Not sure what point I’m making, other than “DRAMA RADIO GOOD! MONGO LIKE!”Site Meter

I wonder how Tman & Pix are…. I’ve not heard from either in a while. They’re both nice folks, and a cute couple… but so *busy* all the time. (Note to self, let pix know her program is done, if she still wants it.) School, work, or my wor cuts into any hanging out time we might get. Same goes for my younger brother. I need to set aside some time to spend with him this week… maybe Sunday night, after my sweetie’s gone to bed, or sunday am, before she gets up. I need to put a good sound card in his system, and just goof around some. We don’t see each other enough, considering how close we live to one another now.

Also, now that Dan’s done teaching summer school, I think we can get together some morning and get a smoothie or so at the groves (did I mention that I’m right behind Mack’s Groves, now? I should count the steps from my front door to the cash register there. They’ve not called me lately about the website… I wonder if it’s finally stableized enough that they’re happy, or if they took the nephew off the net.

quick comment about the HTML post, earlier… a lot of the last bit was tongue in cheek, thus the 😉 at the end… I may not have gotten that idea across very well. (Some of the e-mail replies to the list are, to say the least, very misinterpretive of what I had to say.)

not so evil news –

The Flying Woman finally crash lands

Historic plane wreck ‘spotted’ from space
The wreckage of Amelia Earhart’s aircraft which disappeared in 1937 may have been found.

That’s too cool. I love when old mysteries look like they’re getting solved…. Call Leonard Nimoy! ‘Time for an In Search Of’ reunion!

Hunter S Thompson – I love his writing, and life.

“We had two bags of Grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half-full of cocaine and a whole galaxy of multicolored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers…. also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of Budweiser, a pint of raw ether, and two dozen amyls… but the only thing that worried me was the ether. There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible than a man in the depths of an ether binge…”

“There was madness in any direction, at any hour. If not across the Bay, then up the Golden Gate or down 101 to Los Altos or La Honda… You could strike sparks anywhere. There was a fantastic universal sense that whatever we were doing was right, that we were winning….

And that, I think, was the handle — that sense of inevitable victory over the forces of Old and Evil. Not in any mean or military sense; we didn’t need that. Our energy would simply prevail. There was no point in fighting — on our side or theirs. We had all the momentum; we were riding the crest of a high and beautiful wave…”

“Strange memories on this nervous night in Las Vegas. Five years later? Six? It seems like a lifetime, or at least a Main Era — the kind of peak that never comes again. San Francisco in the middle sixties was a very special time and place to be a part of. Maybe it meant something. Maybe not, in the long run … but no explanation, no mix of words or music or memories can touch that sense of knowing that you were there and alive in that corner of time and the world. Whatever it meant….

History is hard to know, because of all the hired bullshit, but even without being sure of “history” it seems entirely reasonable to think that every now and then the energy of a whole generation comes to a head in a long fine flash, for reasons that nobody really understands at the time — and which never explain, in retrospect, what actually happened.”

a flash of memory

Does anyone else remember the Computer game Syndicate Wars, in particular the open cut-scene?

The background was roughly that every human worker had a chip implanted in their brain that caused them to see everything as right, bright and happy. The syndicate agents don’t have the chips, and operate in reality, where a powerful religious movement is running around deactivating people’s chips and causing all sorts of disruption. The character in the into is walking down a pleasant city small-town street, the sun is shining, the birds are singing and Mr Policeman is is smiling at him, wishing him a good day.

Then his chip is deactivated.

The sky darkens, the small puffy white clouds stretching out to a perpetual fog. The building shoot up into massive skyscrapers, dirt and grime running down their sides. The bird song turns out to be the noise of the city. The policeman isn’t wishing him a good day, he’s telling him to move on. And he definitely wasn’t carrying an assault rifle before the change.

The actual game dealt more with blowing things up than it did with philosophy, but it was a keen background.

“There are ranks and orders. There are faces at every window. Just be thankful they didn’t send the Men in Mauve.”
