9343 – tuesday

We have blooms on our rose bushes – it appears that we have tea roses instead of the regular large sized ones… but BHK seems to be ok with that.

Garden progressing nicely – I swear that I can see the cucumber plants grow by inches every day.

If being captured and tortured makes you ready to be president, there’s a whole Guantanamo full of candidates the Republicans haven’t even considered.

I’m actually a bit fearful of McCain winning. I shouldn’t be, but I was burned by Kerry and Gore, both of which I’d have thought had it in the bag.

Dave’s trying to put me at ease – I hope he’s right. (Though I am annoyed about Obama’s recent campaign actions, too – the aforementioned Supreme Court tossing the D.C. gun ban / Obama’s faith based initiatives / pandering like flags on lapels and “values” as part of a campaign ads.)

Ray Harryhausen turned 88 a couple of days ago – I thought he had passed on. I’m glad I was wrong.

Looks like our condo issues are about up, now. The new management company has contacted us, our bill to be paid actually has an itemized list we can agree with, and it should be smoother sailing as far as that building is concerned.

I’m often surprised when I meet people who are… well, to put it in gaming terms, “built on a lot more or a good deal fewer points” than me. I keep myself in the thought of “everyone is created equal”, but it’s really just not true. I’ve met a couple of people that are practically super-heroes, and pulp-style doc savage types, at that. (I worked with his opposite number at the library, years ago, too) Here and there I come across a person who is amazingly put together – talented, good-natured, physically, socially and mentally fit. Granted, it’s not often that this happens – I figure most people have at least one or two attributes that are at least along the mean, if not sub-par. Then there’s the other side of things… someone who is neither kind to the eyes, particularly intelligent, healthy or easy to get along with. How did they get such a short end of the stick?

I know it’s a pipe dream, but shouldn’t everyone be beautiful and ugly somewhere obvious after talking to them for a moment or thirty? When I get blindsided by folks falling on one side of the bell curve or the other, I have this need to find something contrary to the rest of the model… and I get a little distressed if I can’t spot the hidden flaw or silver lining of the cloud. I know it won’t always be obvious, like Hawking’s mind trapped in his body (or Anna Nicole Smith’s Body [at prime] trapped containing its brain.) Those two aren’t the best examples as I’ve never met either before, but I suspect that they’re fair ones.

I think that the first thing most gamers do when given a system of measuring certain skills and abilities is to build themselves, just to see where they stand. (or, if you’re extra goofy like I am, you’ll do your whole game group, and then compare notes.)

Last night, while watching Astronaut Farmer – Chris asked if the main character was going to die. My answer of “yes, eventually” was not well received.

Ten original designs have been submitted in the 8th Icehouse Game Design Competition, and anyone willing to rank at least two of the ten designs is welcome to serve as a judge. The deadline for judging is July 18th. For details on judging, as well as links to all of the designs, head to the Icehouse Game Design page. (I don’t have any entries this time, but Logger looks fun, at least in theory, as does Ambush.)

I most certainly prefer German-type boardgames (somewhat abstract, largely non-confrontational, and relatively short in playing time), rather than American-style (games that are heavy in theme, aggressive, and requiring an entire evening to play.)

That said, I think we’re going to slow down on our game purchases now – our closet is pretty full. I’d like to trot out a few games for the 3-4th of July time off, especially since we’ll have Alan, Jesus, The Mama, Chris, Larry, BHK and me available to play, plus the possibility of Tina and Matt. I suspect it’ll turn into Apples to Apples fest, but I’d like a few other 3+ player games to get a workout then too… maybe Witch Trial or Super Munchkin would be fun and easy enough for a bigger crew… I’d even like to see a mob-sized Carcassone H&G game.

Other Possibilities are Clue, Aquarius, and Fluxx (Zombie, eco, family or regular… or a mix!)

I doubt we could get ’em to do Chrononauts. That’ll be for when Amy comes over. BHK and I love it, but the gang might not be into the learning part. (same for Crime Lords or Arkham Horror )

We could play Werewolf if we get at least 8 people that want to play. It’d be better with 13… I wonder where Adam, Eric, Jimmy and Joe will be this weekend?)

Speaking of Gaming –
Game Table Online is moving from subscription-based play to free, open gaming for all users as of July 1. (Lord of The Fries ! Kill Dr. Lucky !

9337 – saturday

Went Yard-“sailing” this morning with Tina and BHK – Mostly a bust, but one stop got us a half-dozen unopened buried blueprints puzzles (forgive the ebay link – they’re out of print.), copies of mastermind and upwords, a couple of good books, Max Payne 2 , recipe software, not to mention some other loot that BHK picked up for a total of $8.

I stopped off at the doc’s for shots, bhk and Tina hit wal-mart for some supplies.

After, we hit fab brew, where I got an Italian Soda (cherry), BHK and Tina each got some sort of coffee drink, and then we bounced over to Gallo’s Deli it just opened this week – I got a 3-cheese sub, bhk got meatball and Tina got Turkey & cheese. We’ll be back – it’s pretty average right now, but they’re still getting things in order – it’s no Selby bay sub shop, but they’re three blocks away from the house, and there’s a lot of potential there.

Came back home, crashed out for a nap.

Got up, hung out with the in-laws while they worked the garden, hot dogs, garden green beans and roasted corn for supper! We ate late, and I consumed far too much delicious food.

Watched some National Treasure, Fawlty Towers (drunk chef with a thing for Manuel episode), a moment of the Brothers Solomon (don’t bother) and Army of Darkness.

If you’re heading out to the G-Fest in July, you’ve got a treat in store: the premiere of Godzilla Zero Hour, a high-quality fan film about Tokyo’s notorious mega-monster Godzilla fighting giant flaming, flying turtle Gamera.

Scientists think that Mars’ alkaline soil might be able to grow asparagus.

Although he said further tests would have to be conducted, Mr Kounaves said the soil seemed “very friendly… there is nothing about it that is toxic,” he said. “It is the type of soil you would probably have in your back yard — you know, alkaline. You might be able to grow asparagus in it really well.”

That Meme –

Post 3 things you’ve done in your lifetime that you don’t think anybody else on your friends list has done. See if anybody else responds with “I’ve done that.” If they have, you need to add another. Have your friends cut & paste this into their journal to see what unique things they’ve done in their life.

1.  met my wife as a result of livejournal. (and honeymooned by visiting a whole mess of the ripley’s believe it or not museums up and down the east coast – from St. Augustine, FL  to Myrtle Beach, SC)

1. became a vegetarian on the 5th of july, 1990. (still do dairy and eggs – now crustaceans, too. )

2. discovered (after we broke up) that one of my ex-girlfriends was married and had kids the entire time we were romantically entangled.

3.adopted 2 cats, despite a strong allergy to them. (Fortunately, I’m used to Newt and Pye now!)
3. Helped recover hundreds of missing kids and elderly/confused adults (most just wander-offs, but at least six real kidnappings) over the course of three and some years.

Students studying computing in the UK and US are outsourcing their university coursework to graduates in India and Romania. Work is being contracted out for as little as £5 on contract coding websites usually used by businesses. Students are outsourcing everything from simple coursework to full blown final year dissertations. It’s causing a major headache for lecturers who say it is almost impossible to detect.

The irony of course is that if they actually get jobs in the sector, this will be how they actually work anyway.

Another Mummy movie coming out, in two months? I didn’t even know it was being filmed! Looks like no Rachel Weisz though. That’s not really a big loss – I liked her in the first film, but she sort of bleemed out on the sequel for me.

That, and I didn’t hear about the new Blood Bowl game. I’m really out of the entertainment loop lately! At least I can have a good violent Dwarfs vs Lizardmen football combat game before end of year.

9332 – Monday

Good solid day of work today – getting a lot done and covered. Met the new VP, and he seems like a really nice guy who knows his stuff. I wish I could advise him more on commuting, but he’s a car guy, and not a train or bus sort.

After work, BHK and I went out to lemongrass for a little date – the food was excellent and the company wonderful. It was raining like gangbusters outside, so we stayed for dessert… the Thai doughnuts and fried ice cream were also great, but I tihnk I ate way too much. After the weather let up a bit, we went to petsmart to look at the critters, and saw an army gal with a haircut that made her look a bit like donald duck.

Went home, watched the pilot of middleman. I liked it – it was a little sticky, but forgivable in a pilot episode… There was a super-intelligent gorilla in a tracksuit, which was pretty cool, but I’d prefer that they not mention comics so much. I didn’t need a Grodd reference. He was more like the Mod Gorilla boss to me, anyhow. The “filthy paws / damn dirty ape” quote was expected, but really, that’s forgivable. I’ll be watching it again, and expect it’ll gain some momentum if all goes well.

In honor of Swarm of the Snakehead, I made my own proto – snakehead beastie (you can download him at the link) in Spore yesterday. BHK’s bitey monopod will be uploaded soon, too.

George Carlin passed away. I think that his routines in recent years got a little… I don’t know… Lame? Turned more from radical or wacky to just whiney “get off my lawn you kids” humor? I feel the same way about him the way I feel about a lot of folks I liked more when I was younger – maybe I outgrew him, like I did Harlan Ellison’s angry young guy shtick as it turned into an angry old guy bit. As I age, it gets harder to be entertained by that sort of thing. Maybe they both just ran out of whatever mojo kept them fresh and interesting to me. I still like the old stuff. Not as angry, not as bitter… things can have bite and not seem just sad. He was a great satirist during the bulk of his life, and I’m sure he will be missed.

I saw him in “concert”, at FAU, ages ago with Jeremy Dawsey. I don’t remember where James was, or why he wasn’t along. We had a *fantastic* time, and it was likely the only time I’ve seen a comedian in the last 20 years that wasn’t “schticky”… fat guy telling fat jokes, lesbian telling lesbian jokes, black guy doing black jokes, prop comics… etc, etc, etc.

I’ll just choose to remember this:

Some people say the glass is half empty.
Others say the glass if half full.
I say the glass is too big.

LOS ANGELES — Hollywood will enshrine an eclectic bunch in its famous curbside Walk of Fame next year, including Hugh Jackman, Ben Kingsley, The Village People and fictional Tinker Bell.

Recipients of the sidewalk stars also include Felicity Huffman, William H. Macy, Cameron Diaz, Robert Downey Jr., Tim Burton, Leslie Caron, Charles Durning, Ralph Fiennes, William Petersen, Kyra Sedgwick, John Stamos, Mark Burnett, Chuck Lorre, Kenny “Baby Face” Edmonds, Dave Koz, The Miracles, Doug Morris, Rush, Shakira, KFI radio personality Bill Handel and KCRW host Harry Shearer, who also provides voices for characters on “The Simpsons.”

Cheeta isn’t on the list. The animal actor, whose credits include the 1967 comedy “Doctor Dolittle” and the “Tarzan” movies, was trying for the seventh time to get a sidewalk star.

His handlers had launched an online petition to get supporters to urge the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce to give him a star in 2009.

Guinness World Records has called the 76-year-old chimp the oldest living, non-human primate. Cheeta is retired and lives in Palm Springs.

The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce’s Walk of Fame Committee chose the recipients, who were ratified by the board of directors Thursday.

Seriously? Tinkerbell got a star, instead of Cheeta? She didn’t speak, and has only starred in one film! Cheeta’s an actual being, not just a drawing. What’s next? The NBC Peacock?

Could someone explain to me how Obama not taking public campaign funds “ruins his credibility”?

Let’s see— today –

Shots! Quick and Easy.

Didn’t get to Aardvark for replacement for Catan Dice, and pick up Illuminati: Crime Lords – probably tomorrow.

Went to Annapolis to go see Zohan – I didn’t realize he was going to be some sort of superhero – more fun than I’d thought- had the requisite Sandler dumbness, but it was pretty cute. A few running gags ran overlong, but it was better than I’d expected. The beginning sort of put me in the mood to see Hancock.

I’m rather saddened to hear that Get Smart is poorly rated (almost as bad as the love guru? Seriously? That bad? I haven’t seen, but can only assume the words fro Guru.) – I hope that Wall-E and Hancock bring something more fun to this summer’s movies. I haven’t seen Indy 4 yet either, but I hope it’s better than the reviews make it out to be.

Pizza at the New Pizza Hut by ATW man – not the best – I think it made BHK sick.

Picked up the mail, and noticed our screener of Swarm of the Snakehead came in! (official site)

BHK and I went down for a nap, she is sleeping heavily. (Still wasn’t feeling well) – I got up after an hour, and did some work on the computer for about an hour, and then played video games for about 3 hours – (Portal, HL2, and some game modsPirates, Vikings and Knights II and Zombie Panic.) Tossed a little Bioshock in for good measure.

9323 – Tuesday – man loses left side in accident, he’s all right now.

The first estimate on cutting down the dangerous trees in our yard is right at $5000. $3100 for removing the two trees near the house (with the one near the power lines costing the most) and 1800 for the ones near our elderly neighbor’s house. The tree guy said the one directly behind the house looks like its dying.

Second had the $3100 reduced to $2200 – we’ll see what the guys tomorrow think. Still waiting to see what’s to be done re: the Element’s windscreen.

Had in-laws over for veggie meatloaf, salad and stir-fry veggies – all were delicious. (Larry had hot dogs – still doesn’t want to try non-meat stuff … not like hot dogs are all that higher in critter content!)

This Thursday the 19th is, according to WMATA, “Dump the Pump Day.” Residents are supposed to take advantage of metro in order to see how much money they will save on commuting costs for a day. Thanks to an anonymous whistle-blower, a Walgreens pill-flipping scheme has been blown wide open, according to CBS. "Pill-flipping" refers the practice of pharmacies that purposefully switch Medicaid patients to more expensive versions of certain drugs for the sole reason of collecting more money from the government. Naturally, when this happens, taxpayers pick up the bill. Athough, Walgreen’s officially denies any wrongdoing they have agreed to pay the government more than $35 million.

9321 – Monday

Storm knocked a huge limb out of one of our trees – it bounced on the high power lines and then landed on the Element’s hood with a resounding thump. Dented the hood and front end in a few places and spider-webbed the windshield with cracks. I’m just glad nobody was hurt – Larry was fairly nearby. I’ll be interested to see how fast insurance turnaround will be on this. Homeowners should cover it with a minimal deductible.

I’m sort of disappointed that we didn’t get to hit artomatic – the last two weekends got nailed with Father’s day and general germy-ness. Hopefully it did well enough for Cyn to go back next year. It sounded like a hoot!

I want to ride the trolley, before it stops running, too. (I figure it’ll be in commission for at least 18 months more, before it stops working out for the city… but it looks like a good cheap way for BHK and I to tool around town for $0.25 a ride. With gas prices, you can’t get much better than that.

I mentioned this briefly on Saturday – the bakelite tiles in Hive are chunky (maybe 1/2 inch thick, and about 1 and 1/2 inch diameter) – much larger than I’d thought they would be. It’s even mose satisfying to play now, as a result. I’ve gotten so used to tiny counters and maybe things of “checker” size, that the bigger pieces are a real treat. Still waiting on Mosquito‘s arrival – not a huge deal, as BHK and I haven’t really gotten bored of the basic rules at all.

BHK and I played two games last night – If Wishes Were Fishes and Labyrinth. (I won both.) I suspect the dynaminc of Wishes will change if / when we introduce third, fourth and fifth players.

Ice cream at Solomon’s cone island – I got a soft serve mix chocolate and vanilla w/ chocolate jimmies (erm, sprinkles), and BHK got a small vanilla soft serve cone, dipped in a cherry shell. both were yummy.

Checked out bikes… it’s going to be simpler to buy one than ship mine up from Florida, I think.

Hit Aardvark and picked up a few goodies – that place is habit-forming. We headed home to play our newly aquired treats.

got Hive – pieces bigger than expected (BHK won one, I won one)
got Kahuna – We’ve been playing this on Yucata.de for ages, and discovered there was a comfy form-factor – (BHK won)
got Katan Dice – missing pad, already sent for replacement. We’ll play it next week.

Also picked up Archie in the 80’s for BHK, and the umbrella academy trade for myself.

played If Wishes were Fishes finally – cute game, maybe a little clunky, but could be better once learned or with more players. (I won)

Arkham Horror is a lot more complex out of the box – we weren’t looking to play a 2-4 hour game, so we saved that for another night. The other games could be picked up in 5 minutes played in 20 or so. Kahuna maybe twice that.

Next games for us to play from the game pile are canasta caliente, rook, killer bunnies, gloom, marriage material, and grave robbers from outer space

Went to Selby Sub Shoppe with in-laws – I got a veggie sub w/ seasoned fries, bhk got a chicken parm w/ smiley face potatoes, Larry a burger with crinkle cut fries, Chris a garlic white pizza.

Sporepedia is already publicly accessible. This is the online field guide to all the creatures people have created with Spore, and the source from which the game will eventually populate the planets you play in with AI-controlled versions of the races people have made.

The incredible thing about Sporepedia is that those thumbnail images you see are the creature files. Drag that image right from your browser to the game window, and it loads that creature in all its scampering glory. The creature’s DNA is actually coded into the metadata of a 25 kilobyte PNG image. 9310 – Saturday

Bugah’s baseball game is today – didn’t drive out to VA to see him – both BHK and I love that kid to death, but we’re both too sick to go up there and spread our germs to the little ones – that said, we did go to the doc for a shot.

Got shots, we played Yahtzee on the pda three times while I waited for clearance to leave, bhk does better than me in general, but I got her 2/3 games this time.

Hit the yard sale in front of the firehouse on the way home – BHK got a pair of books, something by Moning [edit – it was Darkfever ] (Highlander something) and The 13th Tale.

After a bit of rest, we decided to head to Aardvark, and picked up Arkham Horror, Grave Robbers From Outer Space and Marriage Material (as well as vol 2 of Irredeemable Ant-man, and Vol 2 of New Frontier.)

I started feeling much more poorly Saturday night – BHK is sick, and I have a severe cough, a fluid-filled chest, muscle aches, and back pain.

We started to do a puzzle, but I couldn’t even stay seated at the table…. so I flopped in front fo the TV and half-watched until we tucked in, at about 9 pm.

On a lighter note – we got our first nibs and nabs from the garden!

9308 – Friday –

I haven’t been recalling my dreams lately. Less fitful sleep, but I wake up with a cough and some nausea most mornings. BHK made some yummy soup last night, but I wasn’t up to much eating for one reason or another. Maybe I’m getting a little cold or something?

Watched the last two episodes of house… the finale was pretty sad stuff… but I dn’t know how much I go in for the pseudo-surreal hypnoscapes and memory retrieval elements… and the fact that nobody checked out the jane doe was a pretty weak plot point, given the other in-depth review of the case.

Put an order in for Hive and the Mosquito expansion at Aardvark – it should be in by June 12 (a little under a week)! A little expensive, but the bakelite pieces will endure a long time.

Maybe I’ll make some out of glow in the dark fimo… or do variant pieces with other bugs. How would a ladybug move… or what might a lightning bug be able to do to switch up the game?

I already fear BHK will toast me at the game… she’s got a good mind for some of these logic puzzle hex territory things.. like hazienda.

Playing it online is fun, but I love the feedback of face to face and handling the game pieces. Plus, if the power goes out, you’re still set. (With the exception of pente and go I prefer most all games offline.) I first coded a version of pente for my good ol’ atari ST back in the day… the AI was weak, but not terrible. I think that I’ve learned a few more strategies since then, but there is no lack of humans to play with… and there are better AIs out there, too.

These free paper foldables are pretty keen. The cat in the vet collar is particularly inspired.

Midweek. Time is grinding slowly, but exceedingly fine. Only one month to July 4 and fireworks everywhere!

BHK made some amazingly good quiche last night… fake bacon “fakon!”, broccoli and cheddar, and the other was a ricotta, broccoli cheddar – sides were tortellinis stuffed with brie, green beans, and zucchini – Larry came over and added corn on the cob for all, as well as grilled burgers for himself and Chris.

it was a short night – after supper, we pretty much went right to bedski… it was raining, and highly conducive to slumber.

Glad to see mootpoint back! I’m looking forward to seeing him post more frequently.

Wizkids was very good about getting my info to send me a replacement piece for Oshi – I suspect they were happy not to have folks begging for free heroclix or 4e stuff. I like the name for support – WhereIsMyFigure@wizkidsgames.com (My helper’s name was Rose – very kind and fast to respond)

9303 – Tuesday –

No movie last night – instead we went to dinner with the in-laws, and after BHK and I played some boardgames. She won Labyrinth, and I took Oshi. (also discovered that the oshi set has one extra two-point piece, and one too few one-point pieces. we may play with pyramids in the future. (or penny, nickel, quarter as towers, for that matter)

Both were our first time playing – BHK got labyrinth for $1.61 at the thrift store yesterday… we’ve more than made our entertainment money back in a single sitting. We picked up Oshi from Aardvark a little while back, but hadn’t gotten to play until last night.

Other goodies BHK picked up from the store –

  • Green Orvis Mosquito-repellant shirt for Larry
  • Green lounge pants for Chris
  • Pink Bucket hat for herself
  • Green striped shirt for me
  • a few books, including Stephen Fry’s The Liar for me, and The Enchanted Broccoli Forest cookbook
  • a couple of puzzles, still sealed in the box. (corvette 1000 pc, spacewalk, homer simpson and an irish hutch)

Dreamt last night that I’d signed on to join the army for six months. Not really a dream of mine in waking life – a lot of the gang from high school were there – Steve Jacoby, James Dawsey, etc… we were all in training as sort of a semi-serious laugh. My big concern wa sthat I had to bring my own toiletries… like the army wouldn’t provide deodorant or shampoo.

thanks, ecto

The first 2 parts of the “lost” film Italian Spiderman has been up for a week or two now and it looks to be just as ridiculous — and awesome — as the trailer had indicated. Give me Franco Franchetti (R.I.P) with his porn-star moustache and pump-action shotgun over Toby McGuire any day.

9299 – Saturday

Had a lovely time shopping for Alan’s b’day present wrapping after my standard morning’s shots. Got a haircut (contrary to photo, I don’t plan on gelling it into a faux-hawk regularly), Lunched at Ledo’s, but I think the stop off at *$ for a little coffee drink took gave BHK a bit of sourbelly, so we headed home, napped and listened to the gumball-sized hail fall unexpectedly from the sky. (There were also tornado warnings, but no sign of that.)

The weather eased while we waited for the in-laws to get ready for the party… we were aiming for a launch time of about 5pm, and we left circa 6:40. Fortunately, we took Chris’s eternal case of time dilation into account, so we got there only about 10 minutes late.

Alan’s party was nice – quite a diverse group of people there, drunks and non-drunks – I finally got to meet JC and Mamacita, but Mamacita didn’t bring her Chihuahua with – maybe next time. I’d say the little house had about 50 people in it at prime time – they hired a doorman, bartender, and a few waiters – but it was a truly casual and pleasant outing… not a lot of seating, but standing wasn’t bad, thanks to my epidural earlier in the week.

He didn’t open his goodies – his true b’day is Sunday… I imagine he’ll like the blooming tea.

Tina and Matt were there – looks like Matt’s losing some weight – Good for him!

Interesting stuff. -(to me, anyhow) Built-in command line windows security tools.

I need never hear the phrase “eyes like gimlets” or variant “gimlet-eyed” again. I like the word gimlet and all, but enough is enough.

Unrelated, I could go for some tasty quiche. Had some blah pad thai at Noodles & Co. in annapolis while we sought out Alan’s Birthday prezzie. It didn’t do much for me, but the cookies and cream milkshake en route home was quite good.

BHK reminded me of the Geister game… you can play it online at BrittspielWelt ! (If you see scottobear there, come say howdy!) If I can get BHK into the online version, maybe we’ll pick up (or make a home version of) the board game… plus… BrittspielWelt has a nice collection of Carcassone w/ expansions, not just Yucata‘s Hunters and Gatherers. (if you’re on yucata, say hi to scottobear there, too!)

Rules to ghost in comments – simple game – but fun.

“Hard knocks life” from Annie stuck in my head this morning, and throughout the day.

Just this part: (It’s all I know!)

It’s the hard-knock life for us!

‘Stead of treated,
We get tricked!

‘Stead of kisses,
We get kicked!

It’s the hard-knock life!

Got no folks to speak of so,
It’s the hard-knock row we hoe!

Cotton blankets,
‘Steada wool!

Empty Bellies
‘Steada full!

It’s the hard-knock life!
