6870 – I remember the responsometer malfunction of ’97.

Power was off at work until about 2pm… when the server woke back up, it emailed me, asking for permission to stay awake, so I told it to go ahead. Big Kahuna, Rogers and I went in and unpacked all of the other hardware. I got the office up and running in about an hour and a half… one of the benefits of being in a hurricane environment is knowing how to pack and unpack in a blink. The building was *hot*.. sealed up for three days without A/C makes the third floor like an attic, but the place got cranking with cool about the time I left. Too late for me, I was a walking river by that time. (Two floors of machines, telephone and other hardware had to be put back together. I’m leaving it to the office-folks to put pictures and such back. No water damage, but the wind really played havoc with the branches everywhere we went.

Today will be a more straight-forward day.

Disco-Hitler. It’s him. He’s the supervillain I’ve been wondering about. (more musical villains here) It’s been around for ages, but every time I rediscover it, it kills me.

Ivan looks like he’s keeping a Southerly course, sneaking up the West Coast of Florida. Still too early to fret, but at least the weekend isn’t wrecked.

The World of Warcraft demo is looking neato! Here’s a peek at Whimsy’s Night Elf… note the plunging neckline, and freakishly large hands. good size for wallpaper… I like the little flowers on the Guardian Tree’s feet and organic feel of the whole place. I’m envious, because she’s a druid and can shapeshift into a bear! However, I think I’d have more fun playing the giant tree.

Clickie to biggie.

A 3D chocolate printer in the works. That’s a really cool idea… a *lot* of potential there. Made out of lego. superb thought.

Episode 11 of Making Fiends is here!

America’s Army is pretty cool. It’s a fun bit of military recruitment, disguised as a FPS. Graphics are nice.. I wonder how many folks have been convinced to join up as a result? I’m doing the medic training… it’s interesting and educational.

KILLDOZER II: ELECTRIC BOOGALOO

once again, Clickie to biggie.

The closest thing to a mech I’ve ever seen. Look at the size of the thing!!! That’s not forced perspective… it’s just fricking enormous. (spun into from here)

bigger picture, other angle

6813 – Audio-visual day

Two Videos of me talking to Newt this morning.

On the Workbench – 500k quicktime – includes a Newt – Mer!

Attack from Above! – 850k quicktime

The second one has my “sinister, yawny just woken up voice / monster-thing”, and the first has my “talk in a high voice because Newt’s a babyhead” thing going on.

Strongsad has a new Journal Entry.

Magical Trevor is Stuck in my Head!

The Lyrics –

Everyone loves Magical Trevor
because the tricks that he does are ever so clever
look at him now, disappearing a cow

Where is the cow, hidden right now?

Taking a bow, it’s Magical Trevor,
Everybody’s seen that the trick is clever

Look at him there with his leathery, leathery whip
it’s made of magic
and with a little flip

yeah yeah yeah

the cow is back

yeah yeah yeah

the cow is back

back back

back from his magical journey-yeah

What did you see in the parallel dimension?

Saw beans, lots of beans, lots of beans, lots of beans,

Saw beans, lots of beans, lots of beans, lots of beans yeah, yeah.

A pop hit if I ever heard one.

From the guy that brought you the equally mind-stickable Scampi, Kenya, and that way overplayed Badgers thing. (I sort of dig the Two Towers remix, though.) I first learned about this with the Wesley Willis Merry Christmas ‘toon.

Assorted CoH images just to look back on

6796 – Thoughts on this journal, etc

I’ve been at it for more than a few years now….posting at least once a day. Sometimes a good deal more, but generally first thing in the morning.

I think that keeping a daily log of stuff is a low-grade compulsion… what would it be in champions? Common, Moderate? 10 points? Maybe I’ve bought it down closer to a 1-point GURPS quirk in recent years. Still devoted enough to do daily entries, but the 8x a day is probably gone until I’m bedridden or something.

I’ve been working on my writing again, and am going to try to submit a few oldies to a few new places.

Major Reworking of the company website ahead. I look forward to it having some freshness, but I fear for a lack of marketing skill and “too many cooks” syndrome before everything settles back down.

I got my $20 back! The ATM guy went to look at the machine, saw the bill wedged in the device inside the hopper, and called my voice mail about 10am. I called him back at about 4pm, and he rant the bill right to my door. you can’t ask for better service than that!

It’s occurred to me that if anyone else did to my brother what he did to himself, I’d probably have killed the bastard.

Gallery of retro science book covers – I had access to a *lot* of these as a kid. I know for certain that I had Dinosaurs, Rocks & Minerals, Rockets & Missiles, The Human Body, and Oceanography.

My neighbor Jason had copies of Horses and Primitive Man, too. I wonder how much the impacted our growth as kids? Not a great deal, I suspect.. don’t most kids go through a dinosaur / science phase? (Some never escape it.)

6724 – Father's Day.

Extra special thoughts for those I care about, and thanks to everyone who has acted as a caregiver and nurtured a living thing.

I’m sort of fascinated by the subject of this community – atlfanghost, a little graffiti ghost that’s been painted all over Atlanta. This entry showcases a large number of them, with alt-tags on most of the pictures noting locations.

Much more interesting, and legally dangerous than my own city’s blue bikes. I wonder where the pink ones went? The Yellow Shoes are all but gone, too. Someone made a collection of abandoned bikes in New York, too.

The current televised poker trend is more boring than televised golf or fishing, in my book.

Had a nice time co-heroing with dcl yesterday… I think Sammy and whims would get along nicely with him. After logging out, I got a 114 meg update… “through the looking glass” a future chunk of the game. One nice new feature is the ability to tweak your costume post creation now… and of course, I like the addition of instanced outdoor missions. I already know a bit about the new addition.. parallel earths, etc. I dig that the game is growing and evolving with regularity.

My journal is the only hit for Mr Chan’s Chinatown Almond Cookies. That’s a pity, because they’re mighty tasty… I haven’t had ’em since that entry.

6391 Gaming memory tangents

My answer to this gaming question: What do you think is the best cast size for the games you’ve played? What are the factors that go into your answer: genre, play group, gaming system, etc.?

The short answer is 4.

The long answer is that I really think it’s up to each gaming group, but I prefer smaller crew sizes for most games. More than six players with one GM was a bit much for me. I think three-four is good for most groups, and I had a lot of fun doing the “Brave & the Bold” Greenpeace (Hippie Green Lantern in the ’60s, protoge of Alan Scott on DC “Earth 2.1”) & Doc Mid-nite (Daughter of The Original) team ups with Katt and GrayPumpkin. (GP ran, K & I were sort of the “buddy Picture” team… there was really solid dynamic there.) It was actually a spin-off of a larger scale silver age JSA, the Next generation campaign…. funny how JSA got popular again in the comics about 3 years after that game came to a close. Supers Games seem to bog down too much after 4 players… but that might just be because we were playing champions. It’s a good game, but combat can take a looooong time.

I’ll add another qualifier to my preference, I prefer a fairly gender-balanced crew… an all-boys squad tends to be more accepting of inappropriate behavior.. I think it’s good to have a balanced crew to keep the less mature a little more on the ball.

So, short story made long, 4 is as large as I really like, though I’ve been in 7-person groups before, usually the 7th person peters it out, at least in my memory. Now, if some of those players are non-entities, it doesn’t count as much… Ramble

Entry #6144 amazing land art, misc linkies and thoughts.

Earth as ArtFor over 20 years the artist Stan Herd has worked the earth using indigenous materials to produce evocative and mystical works. From 160 acre plowed portraits to one quarter acre intimate stone designs, his work has become a platform for discussion of mankind’s contemporary relationship to the land.

Amazing. I’m astounded by the scape of this.. pardon the pun. Just, Wow.

To those that say a vegetarian can’t enjoy Oktoberfest food without eating sausage…. Pretzels and Kraut and Beer!

Carl posted a nice follow-up to the entry I posted about MOND a few weeks back. He’s also got a nifty interactive Crystal drawing program on his homepage.

Note to all Vampires. Don’t run out of turns near the train station. I got slurp-blasted and robbed big time. I had half a mind to turn the entire block, out of spite.

Weblogging Stats. I was surprised at how many were abandoned outright.

Going to get wet the end of this week! I look forward to the coming thunderstorms. I’m really digging putting hover-titles on my linkies now.

Candygram. Aww... I think he's kinda cute. Classic D&D Monster: The Bulette or more commonly called, Land Shark (No Relation to Chevy Chase.) My first introduction to large, tunneling monsters, later mimicked by Tremors. (Though Star Trek’s Horta predates D&D, and Herbert’s Sand Worms are ahead of that.) I’ve always pronounced it “BULL-et” but apparently it’s pronounced “BOO-lay”. Sort of a sissy moniker for such a supposedly nasty critter.

Bulettes have this neat defensive adaptation where, when they are enraged, their dorsal fin sticks straight up and exposes their only vulnerable spot. Of course, this is only a slight weakness. It’s vulnerable in the sense that it’s softer than the rest… It’s not a soft, pulpy squish insta-kill Smaug-zone or anything.

Also, getting close enough to stab this upper back weak spot with your sword is pretty difficult, because apparently a bulette can Leap into the air and hit with all four legs at once.. *That’s* something I’d like to see. I sort of envision a Gamera spinning-turtle attack…though a leap into the air with all four legs impacting on something as a uniform punch is possible, too, I guess. This is the sort of creature I’d like to see exist in the lost jungles somewhere, and be discovered in my lifetime.

factoids / semagic jumps to 1.3.6.0U (after I just got 1.3.3.2 last night) / doing the wash

A new world record has been set by Jim Hager, 47, of Oakland, California. Jim ate 115 M & M Candies, using chopsticks, in 3 minutes. (that’s pretty impressive.. but still seems beatable. I wonder how far the bowl has to be from your mouth?)

Marcelo Torres, 22, was riding the Big Thunder Mountain Railroad when the roller coaster derailed inside a tunnel as it was climbing a steep grade. An “unknown, blunt object” caused “blunt force trauma” to his chest and fractured his ribs, leading to laceration of his lungs. Marcelo bled to death before help could arrive. Ten other passengers were injured.

The animal most often hallucinated by someone experiencing drug withdrawal (including alcohol) is a black or gray dog.

Dendrophilia is sex with trees.

The newest semagic client allows you to download your journal to disk and search it, comfortably. I just finished dumping all 6100+ entries and (comment grabs are currently disabled) to my hard drive. That’ll teach me to download the prior update the night before. They’re going to use a built-in spell checker rather than word’s soon, too.

Displacer beast! Blackie, plus Newt, plus a squid?)D&D monster of the moment… in perhaps more in honor of Blackie than of Newt’s Birthday, a Displacer beast. Newt’s more of an anti-displacer beast, considering that he’s generally when I look for him, and easily petted. He does attack well with his teeth and front strikers, though for no appreciable damage.

The displacer beast is a savage and stealthy carnivore that resembles a puma with six legs, glowing green eyes, and two muscular tentacles growing from its shoulders.

A displacer beast has luxurious, blue-black fur and a long, feline body and head. It is the size of a Bengal tiger, about 10 feet long and weighing about 500 pounds. The tentacles end in pads equipped with horny ridges.

Displacer beasts favor small game but will eat anything they can catch. They regard all other creatures as prey and tend to attack anything they meet. They have a deep-seated hatred for blink dogs, and the two attack each other ruthlessly when their paths cross.

Displacer beasts rake opponents with their tentacles and bite foes that get close.

Displacement (Su): A light-bending glamour continually surrounds a displacer beast, making it difficult to surmise the creature’s true location. Any melee or ranged attack directed at it has a 50% miss chance unless the attacker can locate the beast by some means other than site. A true seeing affect allows the user to see the beast’s position, but see invisibility has no effect.

Ok. Off to do my laundry. Until later, dear journal.

New client / stalling writing / potty mouf doc / they only look like Cthulhu

Just got newest semagic client (1.3.3.2 )for lj… looks pretty solid, so far.

Outtakes of Tom Baker (probably the most famous Dr. Who) doing a voice spot for an item called Symphony. It’s amazing to me to hear the good doctor cuss like a sailor.

It’s hard to write my brother tonight. I can’t think of anything to say. I don’t want to just rehash the day, as little happened but that seems to be the way I’m going. I’m going to have to think of something to reminisce about.

Collectable Pogs. Those guys didn’t last long at all, did they? I’m happy to say I never bought any, but some showed up in cereal boxes and whatnot. I remember that those “pog tubes” were good for holding dice.

Mind Flayer (illithid) The were the first annoying psionic “teleporting telepathic mind-blasters” I’d ever encountered in gaming, but they’re dear to my heart because of the squiddy-faces and cerebrophagic (is that a word?) tendencies.

Look out! There goes one now!

RahhhhERR! Fear my monochrome coloring and simpsons-like art style!

I’m on call this morning while Kahuna goes to get her hair done… probably until 2 pm or so.

I wonder if Danny’ll take the day off of work…. A few months ago New Line Cinema announced they would hold special screenings of the extended editions of the first two Lord of the Rings installments in the weeks prior to the release of the third and final film in the trilogy, The Return of the King. In addition there was talk of a special ass-numbing marathon screening, in which all three films would be shown consecutively. The last would only be available at a few theaters around the country, though. I’d like to do it, but I prefer to watch movies at the house in my jammies these days. I don’t think I’d be up to twelve hours in a movie theatre with whatever crowd of Tol-cretins I feel it might attract. Con-folk. Loudies and smellies, wrecking the experience.

Speaking of people that suck… “You have drunk 10063 pints of blood. Your rank is Supreme Vampire “ next rank at 17000 pints.

Leviticus 11:22 “These of them ye may eat; the locust after his kind, and the bald locust after his kind, and the beetle after his kind, and the grasshopper after his kind.”

Cool. You can eat something that was a plague! Yum, locust! (But leave the pelicans alone! 11:18)

Had a nice long gab with the Gray Pumpkin this afternoon about this, that and the other thing. Lots of fun chitty-chatting about an assortment of stuff, from gaming to kung fu to zombies to political stances. I’m amazed that I was the baby boy of the gaming group… he’s 39, Danny’s 40, Doug’s got to be in his mid-late 40s. I’m only as old as the girls of that gang. Gray and I have the most similar mental frequency of the lot, still. I’m surprised how much of those gaming times I remember, and almost as shocked how much I’d forgotten.

MIT’s Media Lab is a crucible of experimentation and innovation for students of media technology. Their work ranges from the amusingly baroque to the intriguingly clever. A couple of grad students there have developed the Audiopad, an interesting system for performing electronic music. Rather than explain further, let me just encourage you to go look at the video demonstration in either Quicktime (20MB) or Windows Media (11MB) formats. Then go read the project’s web page. I’d hate to see what’d happen if Newt got at those control-elements.

Last night was one of the more entertaining episodes of COPS… (Very little beats the one-legged cop chasing a guy down, however.)

Essentially, a haggard-looking woman with scary wrinkles flags down the cop. She’s really upset because she claims to have been robbed. After a couple of questions from the cop, the woman finally says “I just gave that woman over there $20 to buy crack cocaine, and she hasn’t given me anything!” She points across the street at another lady.

She says this right to the cop. The cop is sort of flabbergasted, and makes her repeat it. “Ok. You paid that woman $20 for crack cocaine, and she took your money and didn’t give you anything. And you want me to go over there and… All right. Ok. ”

The cop eventually shrugs and decides to follow up on it. He walks across the street, where the other woman is waiting.

The cop says, “That woman over there says she just gave you $20 to buy crack, and you didn’t give her anything.”

The second woman says “No sir, officer, I do NOT sell crack. I am a prostitute.

Also got into Animal Planet’s “The Future is Wild”, though I view it a speculative fiction rather than sound science… mainly because we don’t have a lot of the variables in place to make even something that I’d consider an educated guess about what life on Earth will be like 100 million years from now. I did rather like the tunneling birds and land-squid, however. The art and movement of the new beasties is really amazing.

Random Scotto factoid – In grade school, I hated diagramming sentences. *Hated it* Ms Mickey, the teacher at the time was as cool as could be, but when I was obliged to do that on paper… or worse, go up to the black board, I could feel the pickle-puss hang on my face. At the time, it struck me as some of the most pointless stuff I’d ever been obliged to do, and though I recognize the usefulness now, I still really don’t like doing it. I wonder if it’ll ever get telegraphed? Some little kid will ask me for help some day, I’ll see what it is, throw off a “oh, that stuff again…” and give that munchkin an irrational dislike for it, too?
