I got out of the house briefly to babysit Tigger with BHK at the in-laws (they’re off camping) and to visit the neighborhood flea market today – normally would’ve walked, but rolled in the love cube instead due to lack of mobility.
Spent a total of $80 today. Here is some of what we got:
- hand held police scanner (for $1!) it works!
- A big pile of books to read (William Kidd for me, a bunch of goodies for BHK)
- flash comic, seaguy comic
- 2 new iron chairs for the porch ($27)
- 4 plastic dinosaurs ($2)
- a picnic basket, complete with plates, cups and such ($5)
- a beeswax candle of a bear on a beehive
- a chocolate brownie
- 2 chocolate chip pumpkin muffins
- a yummy loaf of birdseed bread
- a chocolate chip oatmeal cookie
- 2 handmade cereal bowls – aquamarine – really pretty!
- 4 potted ranunculus, with a ton of buds (pink, yellow, orange, red)
- 2 long boxes for the flowers, plus potting soil.
- dvd player ($5) for larry
After riding around, my back was pretty rough, and BHK was feeling it too – headed home and just chilled out. I’m a little worried that I over exerted myself by just standing up and sitting down so much. Ugh.
Random pic from the hardware store last week – forgot to post it. I am juvenile.

9664- sunday
Beautiful Spring day today – Back is sore and tummy still upset, but it’s hard not to love the weather. If anything, it’s a bit warm – thank goodness for the breeze off the bay!
Opened up our windows, and let the kitties sniff the fresh air… good to air out the house. Lots of green glow outside, flowers are blooming like gangbusters.
All of our neighborhood kitties were running around, too… most were too fast for the camera, save the chubby polydactyl girl that lives off of 7th and F. She is a master of using her little mitten-hands, too! I fear for the day we ever own a cat with opposable thumbs… our boys are tricky enough without manual dexterity.
Also discovered that the critter up the road we call "Dirty Cow Cat" (sung to Foreigner’s "Dirty White Boy") is really named Zorro.
Pyewacket was at the Window, mewing loudly as BHK picked at the catnip out front… I took a time out from what I was doing to dose both the boys up with a little bit of the kitty-weed.
Saw Chicken Dawg walking around while the in-laws were working in the garden. He was having a grand ol’ time, and smartly stayed out of the road. (Chicken Dawg is named such, because the first day we saw the beagle/basset mix, he was running down the street with a chicken carcass in his mouth – looks like he got it from a trash can. He high-tailed it before we could take it away from him.)
Pictures from walkabout – lots of plants, with the occasional kitty or lawn.

North Beach’s High and Low today – 26° F | 14° F
Nearby Easton is 9°F, with a windchill of -7° F.. the Snakehead fish there are going to be under a layer of ice, I think.
That’s about as chilly as it has gotten this season… well, that’s not saying much – winter started.. what, Yesterday?
40% chance of precipitation… maybe even a white Christmas! I’ll take those odds.
BHK and I have been amused by a recent episode of Mr. Meaty – it’s on the Tivo until it gets lame. Jesse Lumberpond! Sissy Death!… and See also
Making fiends is cute, and I hope Amy Winfrey is swimmingly successful with it. I really liked the web cartoons – I wonder how many changes she had to accept to get it on nickelodeon?

Starting today, you can purchase a commemorative Barack Obama inauguration SmarTrip card. The special cards, which cost $10 and come with no value preloaded onto them (or pay $20 upfront and get $10 in value on the card) can be purchased online or at Metro sales offices. The commemorative cards featuring Obama’s face are not to be confused with the special $10 one-day Inauguration paper farecards, which also feature Obama’s face. Those paper cards offer unlimited rides on Metro all day on Jan. 20, and are also available online or at Metro sales offices. The commemorative SmarTrip cards work just like regular SmarTrips, and do not offer any special fare discount or unlimited rides. (via DCist)

Got epidural (ouch.), appointment with cardio, met with back doc, got spore, Mexican food and maggie moo’s.
Wal-mart drew the last straw, and is now on the official boycott list – poor service plus bad business practices in the pharmacy.
While BHK was reading bergdorf blonds, I played spore – somehow I can’t use the critter I created in the demo creator in a spore game -still investigating why that is.
Went grocery shopping – Cranberry sierra mist is back and I got creme de menthe altoids – sad to see the mandarin orange mist gone.
As for walkies – we’ve laid out a reward plan – we have a bundle of space-critter buttons, and for each goal, we get an additional "merit badge" – after we get up to distance, it’ll be repetition. My goal is 5 miles a walk, three walks a week.
So far –
5 badges each–earned
1 after 5x 1 mile walks—Allison got a space piggy, Scott got a red astro-kitty
2 after 4x 2 mile walks
3 after 3x 3 mile walks
4 after 2x 4 mile walks

Better Walkies today – cooler weather – lady with cats in a screened in stroller (Abby and Gabby – her name was Merle), spent much of the day at home.
Adam paid a visit, brought Chinese food. Played some Wii / lego star wars, took it easy.
Additionally, we saw the polydactyl cats who were more than friendly and lovable – they flop over and show belly for petting as soon as we get within 10 feet of them. clicks embiggen as always. I think the white belly is pregnant. Are mitten-footed cats just more friendly? I seem to recall the ones in the Keys to be especially lovey, too.
Chewing on a bagel yanked out my filling and root canal. According to identity management firm Cyber-Ark’s annual ‘Trust, Security & Passwords’ survey, a whopping 88% of IT administrators would steal CEO passwords, customer database, research and development plans, financial reports, M&A plans and the company’s list of privileged passwords if they were suddenly laid off. The survey also found that one third of IT staff admitted to snooping around the network, looking at highly confidential information, such as salary details and people’s personal emails.

9408 – saturday
Beautiful day out this morning – we went for a nice 8am constitutional to check out the bay fest pre-opening. Lots of seagulls on the beach waiting in advance for folks dropping bits of funnel cake and corn dog, no doubt!
It got pretty hot by the time we got back – I left in a fairly creaky condition, but was ok, but tired once we arrived home. BHK and I lounged for an hour or two, and then I got a message that boiled down to my going into work on Monday. Too many issues with the project – can’t in good conscience take the day off, under the circumstances. I think that I was more disappointed about not getting BHK’s birthday off to treat her more than she.
After wrestling with that for a bit, we headed back to bay fest for some junk food, people-watching and a bit more exercise. While at the Bayfest I saw Kathy Bauer! I worked with her at Calvert county a little over a year ago, and she recognized me immediately. That crew was the kindest and most fun group of people I’ve ever worked with… a shame that it just wasn’t affordable to work there. We didn’t stay long, but got a couple of veggie egg rolls and some limeade and orangeade which really hit the spot. Between the ‘fest and home, we took another A/c break at Coffee, Tea and Whimsey and ended up purchasing a bottle of wine for the evening’s birthday celebration, some awesome horseradish/garlic dip, some goofy rubber monster key-toppers, and a keen Buddha eye-glasses holder for BHK’s nightstand. Pictures of those… and the ‘fest to follow.
More resting and just goofing around until six came… bhk and I were watching primeval and just soaking up some snooze-vibes with the kitties. I waited for BHK to hit deeper sleep, and went to sneak off to do some wrapping, but it wasn’t stealthy enough – but she relented to nap while I wrapped.
We went to the in-laws for dinner – BHK got her desired Chik-fil-a strips and nuggets, and Chris made her a cake, too. She managed not to be buttered, but Larry psyched her out a few times. Aside from the tasty dinner (I had eggplant, zucchini, and the best corn on the cob of the summer), a little room was saved for the cake.. it was a reduced sugar yellow with chocolate icing… pretty yummy!
Loot BHK got was – card 1 from me – made her cry, but they were happy tears, cards from her grandparents on Larry’s side – in-laws gave her a cat encyclopedia, a ruby and diamond heart necklace w/matching earring-studs, and $100 toward a sewing machine…. very, very generous and appreciated!

The cake – pre-ignition. Don’t worry – BHK will be butter-nosed, yet, dear journal!
Day ended with us lounging at the in-laws living room – Hallmark channel vs the Rock.
Over at Gamasutra, Steve Fulton has published a massive 23,000-word history of Atari from 1978 to 1981, encompassing ‘… some of the most exciting developments the company ever saw in its history: the rise of the 2600, the development of some of the company’s most enduringly popular games (Centipede, Asteroids) and the development and release of its first home computing platforms.’ Best quote in there for Slashdot readers, perhaps: ‘Atari had contracted with a young programmer named Bill Gates to modify a BASIC compiler that he had for another system to be used on the 800. After that project stalled for over a year Al was called upon to replace him with another developer. So … Al is the only person I know ever to have fired Bill Gates.

Magpies can recognize themselves in a mirror, confounding the notion that self-awareness is the exclusive preserve of humans and a few higher mammals. It had been thought only four species of apes, bottlenose dolphins, and Asian elephants shared the human ability to recognize their own bodies in a mirror. But German scientists reported on Tuesday that magpies, a species with a brain structure very different from mammals, could also identify themselves. It had been thought that the neocortex brain area found in mammals was crucial to self-recognition. Yet birds, which last shared a common ancestor with mammals 300 million years ago, don’t have a neocortex, suggesting that higher cognitive skills can develop in other ways.

Friday 9398 –
I neglected to mention that the love cube (our Honda element) is now repaired… they replaced the whole hood – BHK think that it may be from a different model, and she might be right. I haven’t seen any good photos of 2006 vs other element hoods online yet, but we’ll get to the bottom of it, if it requires us to go to a car lot somewhere and look in person.
Last night at about 5:30ish, there was a storm that knocked out power to both Chesapeake Beach and North Beach… not to mention the surrounding towns, too. No juice means no oven, and since I was still dressed from work, I figured it’d be nice to take BHK out to dinner, seeing as she’s been craving meatballs all day. We tried Ledos, Asia Cafe and Mama Lucia’s north to no avail.. apparently everyone else had the same idea about eating out… even mexico was too mobbed, so we continued onwards to Mama Lucia’s south – The service was a bit on the weak side until BHK politely asked the waitress (while I was washing my hands in the men’s room) . Service improved after that…. we got home and both towns were still dark, save for places with generators.
I used the flashlight on my key chain to get us inside, and we lit a few rechargeable candle-style lamps for some ambient light. We have access to a lot of battery-powered light – cell phones, pda, laptops, flashlights… I think we could go days without running totally out of lamp-juice. That said – I want to recharge the candle-lights, since we hadn’t done them fully beforehand. The emergency flashlight and radio lit up the bathroom area nicely as a night lite – we opened the bedroom windows and went to bed, hoping that the heat wouldn’t be too bad… it wasn’t… but poor BHK didn’t sleep very well… I was snoring big time, as the CPAP runs on juice, too. Next time, I’ll bring the UPS from the computer room in to run it.
So, power was restored at about 2am this morning, and we were all able to get an hour or two’s rest before it was time for me to get up and get rolling to work. I hope to catch a little nap sometime tomorrow in order to try and catch up.

Power out at the house tonight, so we’re off to Mama Lucia’s for dinner! Looks like strong rains and downed trees knocked out all of North Beach and Chesapeake beach! [edit – power came back up at 2am – accorting to the computer, it went down at 5:25pm)
CNBC reports that Netflix’ shipping systems have been at least partially broken since Tuesday. They managed to ship nothing on Tuesday, half of what they were supposed to on Wednesday, and nothing today. What’s the deal? Apparently the outage affects 1/3 of their customers (including good ol’ Scotto and BHK), to whom Netflix is trying to figure out the best way to refund some cash. They’re still not sure what the root of the problems are, so in essence, they have no idea how to fix it. Be prepared for a few more days of outages, unless it turns out that it’s a super easy fix that’s much harder to diagnose than to repair.

Random Scotto Factoid –
I’m an avid reader but some very simple words are sometimes mental stumbling blocks.
Examples:
Singer. Someone who sings… but my brain always reads it as someone who singes. As in: What is that singer superficially burning today? I guess I’m not altogether wrong.
Also Bewilder is not equal to “Be Wilder“… but that’s how I hear it when I read it. conversely, I read Wilder as “Will-der”. I have no idea how I mixed tohse up as a kid.
I know the old gags about manslaughter / “Mans Laughter” and Therapist / “The Rapist”, but my mind never really ripped those words in the wrong way.
Walk is a word that just looks wrong to me… as does talk and balk. Ls and Ks just don’t jibe to me.
The VGT Omnivore’s Challenge.
I haven’t always been a vegetarian.
I have eaten the following (in bold):
1. Venison
2. Nettle tea
3. Huevos rancheros
4. Steak tartare
