8762 – sunday, sunday

Nice day today… BHK and I initially wanted to make some coffee and sip it on the boardwalk in North Beach, but the wind quickly put the kibosh on that… My two caffeinated crack monkey companions soon decided that perhaps a nice drive through Deale might make for a more comfortable Sunday morning activity. (Thanks to the Love Cube’s swell environmental controls and roomy tour vehicle status, no doubt.)

Peekatures from the drive (the very last is the boardwalk bay view, before we iced over)- some broken down/abandoned housing and barns, a nifty little food joint, etc. the ‘Fabulous brew coffee shop” was a nice little joint to stop and get some scones and a caffeine recharge. Good (bad?) news is that they’re opening another Fabulous Brew about 3 minutes away from our house. Will our tassimo survive? as always, hover for a minor description, or clicken to embiggen.

On the way to dropping Tina off, we noticed a lot of activity at the volunteer fire department. (the semi-decapitated gnome: semi-decapitated gnome at tina's is on Tina’s neighbor’s steps, as it has for a year. Each neighbor is supposed to take turns and pass the gnome off to the next person in line to mow as a bait to get him off the porch, but this neighbor would rather keep a broken lawn ornament than do his part.)

The admission to the dog show was free, but there were all sorts of opportunities to help support the local SPCA, no chains, disabled animals and adoptions… though I confess that the primary allure was wiener dog races (videos to follow once uploaded to google). Oddly, there were belly dancers, as well… but I didn’t grasp the connection between them and animal assists.

Been hearing good things about the revamp of Star Fleet Battles called Federation Commander – it sounds like it can be played by both normal humans as well as rule-monkey hardcore gamers. I think that I’ll work BHK into it after she gets over the Pirates addiction. (Free Sample Game here as a pdf from the homepage) I’m more likely to get the Romulan one first… it has Gorn Ships, too, even though Klingons are plenty keen.

BHK and I spent most of our waking day with the in-laws… What I thought would be a quick-ish trip to get some plywood became a pleasant all-day affair.

Firstly, we visited our snowman, now just a stick and bit of cork on the dock, since it’s 63 degrees outside.

It was a nice day on the bay

Later we went to Leonardtown and stopped off at Witch’s Rock (An 875-pound boulder sits in front of this museum, and it’s said that visitors can see the hand print of Moll Dyer on the rock. Dyer was labeled a witch by the townspeople and was driven from her home on one of the coldest nights of the year. Her neighbors burned down her cabin, so she was left to the elements. Dyer was found the next morning, frozen to death and clutching the giant rock. When the townspeople removed her body, the impressions of her knees and hands were left at the scene. Three hundred years later, people report seeing a ghostly apparition floating over the land where she lived. Visitors to the museum report feeling aches and pains when they stand near the rock, and those who have tried to take pictures of it find that their cameras malfunction.)

Google has added a slick new feature to their mapping product. Over 30 major US cities (including DC) now sport a new “Traffic” button that will display congestion, or (hopefully) lack of it, on important routes.

  • Red means bumper-to-bumper gridlock
  • Green means go go go
  • Orange means somewhere in between

I don’t drive, but it would be interesting to hear from anyone out there who has tried this interface and has gotten feedback that actually helped them pick a successful alternate route.

8759 – kitty tigger – found in our yard

kitty tigger, originally uploaded by scottobear.

Tigger’s collar has a phone number that’s disconnected. He’s very affectionate, and I played with him for a while, hoping that his owner would come around looking for him. No dice, so I’ve put out a little bowl of food for him and am calling around to the local animal people to see if anyone knows who he is, and where he belongs.

[edit-update: Tigger’s a neighborhood cat, who lives mostly out in the woods. Apparently he makes a good living visiting folks and eating food set out for him, and the occasional mouse and mole. I hate that he’s an outside cat, but this region is moderately safe… I guess he’ll continue to live out and about, unless someone adopts him. I’m a huge softie, and am liable to do it myself, if another family doesn’t come by soon.. I don’t know how Pye and Newt would deal with a third brother in the house.]

8758 – Thursday

Had a pretty straightforward day – Chatted a bit with graypumpkin online about gaming, road trips and whatnot while I was doing online research about gigs and following up on resumes (not to mention found info about MCSE server 2003). BHK helped a great deal by taking care of othe rbusiness out of house, and visited Tina upon her return.

(Strongly suspected to be a relative of Newton and Pyewacket) Kiddo, the first transatlantic cat by airship!

Kiddo, with Melvin Vaniman, chief engineer of airship 'America' - photo used by kind permission of the National Air and Space Museum, Washington, DC Kiddo’s name is unlikely to be familiar to readers; however, he was the first cat — maybe the only one — to cross the Atlantic Ocean (well, almost) by airship. He was a grey tabby and belonged to one of the crew members of Walter Wellman’s airship America. Wellman (1858-1934) was an American explorer, aeronaut and journalist. In 1910 he and five companions attempted to cross the ocean, leaving from Atlantic City, New Jersey on 15 October that year. Kiddo is said to have stowed away in one of the lifeboats, and really did not enjoy his first experience of flying, mewing and howling and generally getting on the nerves of the first engineer, Melvin Vaniman. The America carried radio equipment — the first aircraft so equipped — and apparently the historic first, in-flight radio message, to a secretary back on land, read: ‘Roy, come and get this goddamn cat!’

Kiddo was unceremoniously stuffed into a canvas bag, with the idea that he would be lowered into a motor-boat beneath the airship; but the weather was too rough to make the transfer and so the cat remained on board. He soon regained his equilibrium and his spirits, and indeed the crew found him ‘more useful than any barometer. You must never cross the Atlantic in an airship without a cat,’ as the navigator Murray Simon put it. ‘He is sitting on the sail of the lifeboat now as I write, washing his face in the sun: a pleasant picture of feline contentment. This cat has always indicated trouble well ahead. Two or three times when we thought we were “in” he gave most decided indications that he knew we would be shortly getting it in the neck.’

The airship broke all records for continuous flight up to that date by remaining in the air for 71½ hours, but unfortunately came down at sea just 475 miles (760 km) short of her destination. The crew, including Kiddo, were rescued by the steamboat Trent, with Simon reminding them that it had been a good idea to bring a cat, as they have nine lives!

A tumultuous welcome awaited them in New York, and Kiddo achieved celebrity status by being displayed for a while in Gimbel’s, one of the leading department stores of the time, where he reclined on soft cushions in a gilded cage.

He retired from aviation to live with Walter Wellman’s daughter, but Vaniman was not so fortunate, as he died when the airship Akron, on which he was making another Atlantic attempt, exploded on 2 July 1912, killing all on board.

8756 – 2sday

Sometimes I wake up, and I can’t believe that I’m where I am. How did I find such a wonderful person, and how on earth did she agree to spend the rest of her life with me? I blink, and know the answer, and I’m so happy that I feel like I’m going to explode. It’s times like this that remind me that miracles happen… and rehappen every day.

I sort of want the Absolutely MAD dvd… every issue from the 1952s all the way to 2005 for like $40? I wonder what the resolution is like? I would really like to see the Will Elder stuff and old 50s color items in sharp view.

8753 – Snow!

Boy, howdy did it snow today. Big, fat flakes… some about the size of a quarter. I’ve never seen stuff that big falling before… sort of like a cheesy pillow fight scene. After taking care of Tina’s kitties, we went over to the in-laws for breakfast – Pancakes and fruit salads were the theme, and we watched the snow fall in huge clumps from the sky. Our plans to go birdwatching and perhaps return to the train show were whited out, so instead, Adam, BHK and I took a walk down to the dock and fed the available birds some old bread while making a snowman. The weather warmed up and rain came down later… I suspect mr snowman now looks a bit like Edward James Olmos. Maybe we’ll take a peek at him tomorrow in the sunlight. The sun dropped below the horizon, so we went back inside for a nice viewing of Jackson’s King Kong and angel hair pasta & salad for din-din.

Not getting all of my notifications from LJ. Perhaps flying_blind is right in his suspicions about bad Vox code finding its way back into lj.

Fairly eventful weekend – After tending to Tina’s kitties, BHK and I went with Larry to the model train expo… If I were still gaming, this would’ve been the perfect place to buy all sorts of miniatures, from old west, to 1920’s, to whatever genre hat could possibly contain a train (including some stuff for a Thundarr the Barbarian game, city ruins and folks on horseback were available… and Superheroes!) I think my favorites were the LEGO trains, though… the dioramas were not as detailed, of course, but there’s something quite comforting about snap-together blocks.

After the expo, we went to see Adam swim in the state finals at the University of Maryland.. the college park campus is really nice. Adam did quite well, scored a gold medal in the 200 meter relay. I was happy to see that the majority of his crew made it to see him swim – Father, step-mom, and all of his siblings.

Several pictures from Adam’s swim meet, The train show, and assorted escapades on Saturday. Primarily shots of HO scale and Lego train sets. take a peek

8749 – Wednesday

This morning there was a phone hearing with old gig and the state of Florida – went well, but postponed a smidgen while details about working or contracting are ironed out. I was under the impression that I wouldn’t be getting any bennies, but now it seems like I might. That could come in *quite* handy if it happens, but I’m not counting on it! After the hearing, we visited Cyn and her new space. (And finally got her the xmas prezzies we have been holding!) By the way, if you’re in the area, she does fantastic artwork, both on and off of skin. Visit her at chesapink.com

Dinner at the in-laws – stir fry and I do a viewing of the Naked Gun with Larry while Chris and BHK discuss some work issues. Larry and I win!

Before Dinner we swung by the bay and checked out the duckies, swans and other sea birds at sunset.

It’s a nifty city… I wouldn’t mind working there – I dig it more than Baltimore, in fact. Easier to get to, and fascinating. There’s a statue or museum every three feet, it seems. I was pleased to discover that all of the monuments and the smithsonian are free to visit, so I’d like to take a mini-tour of the Air and Space or Museum of Natural history after any follow-up interviews.

Breakfast with Tina, and then Amy, Bhk and I went to Annapolis again, this time, we saw Ghost Rider! It was a fun movie, if weak in a lot of areas. Good job of camp + comic-book scary. Tonight is the sleepover with Amy and Tina!

After a long comedy of errors catching up with Tina-bo-beena, we finally arrived at the HQ to watch Jackass 2 of all things. It was funny, in a sort of “what the heck kind of nimrods” kind of way… but I did like a few of the sight gags a bit.. the boxing-glove valentine in particular was pretty dang funny.

We went to Annapolis and walked around a bit – saw the Alex Haley Monument, and window-shopped at a few stores. We intended to see Ghost Rider today, but our timing was off. However, Sushi at Joss makes everything better. Even mo’ betta’ was that Amy surprised us and bought supper!

8742 – Wednesday – Happy Valentine’s Day!

Staying home for V-day… maybe a trip to Philly or DC as a little romantic getaway some other time… the snow and ice was just too rough and tumble for driving unless it was absolutely necessary.

Made for some interesting scenes, though. I’ve never seen stuff so totally laminated as this… including the tree branch that fell and smashed one of our fence pipes! the branch alone weighed about 200-300 lbs… I estimate the water on top added an additional 100-150 lbs to it.

Photos – Probably too much ice, but I’m new to this stuff! (click here for thumbnails of iced trees, a smashed house, birds by the water, and so on. Bobby Drake attacks!)

8741- Tuesday

Feeling much better today – only a mild sore throat and some joint stiffness remain, along with a lack of appetite. Stayed home and was attended to quite gently by Doctors BHK, Pye and Newton.
