Gung Hei Ft Choi! Happy Year of the Rat! (From a loving Earth Monkey)

BHK  made a fantastic ravioli dinner in cream sauce with peas and broccoli… nom nom nom

Nice video on the difference between Hilary Clinton and Barack Obama: from Lessig on choosing candidates – well put. (via wickenden’s twitter ) Transcript here. (Unrelated, but cool, he put me onto the sandy reminder service, too)

Chest issues are clearing up nicely after visiting the doc, also queried about a few other items pending on the health checklist.

Confirming times for David’s visit at the end of the month. I think that we’ll have fun hanging out – He’s got some pals to visit in DC, too.

Say.. when’d they add terrain to google maps? I just noticed the button, looking at what drive he migh thave to do.

Read the graphic novel Superman/Batman : Absolute Power. It did nothing for me.

Synopsis: Three time travelers eliminate members of the Justice League, except for young Superman and Batman, whom they raise as their own children. Batman and Superman are raised to be dictators of the world, eliminating all opposition and killing people who would otherwise be their friends. During a fight with the Freedom Fighters the timeline is thrown into chaos, and the two men travel through alternate time lines. Darkseid makes a deal with them in one reality to send them back through time to stop the super-villains who raised them from altering history. Superman and Batman restore history, but the murders they committed haunt them.

Nah. Not for me. Even with Hex showing up and the Legion… it still didn’t inspire, impress, or provoke any thought. Picked it up on impulse at the library while waiting on my prescription. I hope the Marvel Westerns book is more to my liking.

To whom it may concern – If you play CounterStrike, Team Fortress 2, Half-Life: Death match or other online type fps games, I’m scottobear on Steam. Add me to your buddy list, and I’ll happily play a game with you sometime. I’d rather play with folks I know, or at least Internet-know than total strangers… more fun to put a personality to the people I’m shooting alongside or at.

Of course, if you don’t like me, add me anyway, and you can either shoot me in the face in game, for maximum catharsis. No legal ramifications for killing a little avatar!

This is my kind of protest. Not violent, just a guy in a polar bear suit in a little paddle boat. Of course, sans permit, he was arrested… but not before getting a basic point across.

9050 – Tuesday

It’s Fat Tuesday!

It’s Super Tuesday !

It’s PANCAKE DAY !

Sakes.. it all seems so early this year. I don’t have the chops to eat pancakes tonight… still feeling a bit under the weather – but I don’t do lent either, so it’s all good. some mini-bagels and wheat chex with blueberries is just what I needed.

JC told me about a pneumonia shot… I’d never heard of such a thing. I’m going in to see my doctor today about getting one… apparently, JC had some bronchial issues about 8 years ago, and this cleared it up to the point where she’s never needed anything again.

I’m for that… I’m hitting the doc’s tomorrow in Dunkirk and having a look.

Watched The Last Mimzy tonight… it was ok, but no amazing great shakes happening there. Sort of a shiny, happy 12 Monkeys for hippies and kids, but not really. It’s not a bad movie overall… I think that in the right setting, and with the right people it’d be a cute way to burn 90 minutes. As it stood, it was average. Nothing amazing, nothing terrible.

Pye liked watching it with us – Newt snoozed upstairs.

I haven’t had a hot dog cut like an octopus in a while… it’s overdue. Maybe with some cherry pez and an episode of the Tick, for that matter.

A slice of life from North Beach, by way of BHK – I’ve been waiting for some mail order stuff for a while, and Danny’s present hadn’t arrived yet.

Just went to the post office and got the mail—there was NO package slip in the box. I was waiting for your shoes and t-shirts so I thought I’d go ask just be sure and LO and BEHOLD we had 3 packages! Danny’s came on Saturday Afternoon. BUT there was a bit of controversy–2 things.

The postmaster SWORE she put a note in our box but I KNOW we didn’t get one—as I was leaving the blond post lady told me that sometimes the other post lady forgets to put slips in—-GLAD I asked!

ALSO there was a giant brown stain where something wet had leaked on your shoes box—luckily upon further inspection it didn’t make it into the inner box but without me asking the postmaster volunteered—-“Oh sorry Luther’s deer blood got on your package.”

I SWEAR I almost BARFED in the post office. I was like WHAT? And the postmaster explained that some dude who lives in North Beach and his son like to send meat back and forth to each other.

Last week the father got in a bit of deer meat packed in dry ice and it leaked If it hadn’t been our box and I didn’t have to unwrap a bloody box I would’ve laughed at the following conversation the two post-ladies had after they told me what was on my box.

One: “Is it legal to send meat through the mail?” (UM shouldn’t she KNOW?)
Two: “Of course it is–Luther sent his son some fish back last week remember?” (GAG!!!!)
One: “Well at least your box wasn’t as bad as Mrs. So-and So’s Southern Living Magazine. I felt bad for her the whole thing was SOAKED in deer blood. I doubt she was able to read a page.” (BAAAAAAAAAAAAAARF!)

It’s not Hooterville here, I swear! Sometimes, it strikes home how different things are now than in Fort Lauderdale… and how much I prefer being on the Bay to living in SoFL.

Yikes.

Yikes. Remind me not to riot in Lima. Heck, I’m not feeling up to rioting anytime soon.

9047 – Friday

I’d love to get this for Todd or Kevin. Kev, because he loves the ol’ stratofortress…. and Todd, because he needs a way to get out of the office in style.

Me… I’d rather have a bunch of these stone pillows piled in a corner like an ogre’s cave… a place to curl up and snooze comfortably.

I don’t think that a white woman as president would change the world any more or less than having a black man in the office. Both *seem* like they’d be a big change, as far as the USA goes… but not so much in the international arena… but I don’t think it would make such a big difference after a brief period of barking by racists and sexists… (on all sides of the fence)

Margaret Thatcher or Idi Amin, anyone? (or Aquino and Mandela, for the positive side of things) Those should prove that if anything, genitalia and skin color shouldn’t mean too much regarding national leadership. There are good and bad leaders of all stripes.

When I hear that someone is voting on the basis of gender or skin tone, my mind plays a sing-song voice of “I’m voting for Joe So-and-so, because of his dreamy blue eyes”…. it makes as much sense to me. This isn’t friggin’ American Idol… vote for the “talent”, not the “style”.

What happened to judging folks by the content of their character? That alone is the big reason I can’t get behind Clinton. She’s a good politician… but I think that by being so, she’ll tell anyone what they want to hear to get elected… and she hasn’t done a very good job of showing consistency on any issues I care about. Obama may be as bad or worse… but I don’t have the huge pile of information like I do on Hillary. I can’t in good conscience put a vote toward her… I don’t even want her as VP, which I suspect she’ll get.

Um.. Ann Coulter supports Clinton over Bill McCain, because McCain isn’t conservative enough? Isn’t that like getting an endorsement from the devil?

Slang of the moment (via BHK) – Electile Dysfunction. – The inability to become aroused over any of the choices for President put forth by either party during an election year.

Ok… enough with the politics. Waxy Monkey Frogs are awesome, and I love them.

Yikes.. Microsoft to buy Yahoo… I hope not. I’ve long enjoyed Y!’s style and reliability. I fear that might get lost in the shuffle. My biggest worries are for flickr…. I’m glad I found the downloader when I did.

Rainy-rain rain today. I like it.

Added bonus about tomorrow… since it’s a Saturday, I didn’t have to fudge anything to take the day off.

I’m fully aware of the fact that my nose will be buttered by BHK sometime tomorrow… and I don’t have a chance of dodging it. I imagine that caches of grease are already placed throughout the entire county, just waiting to be used. I know it is an expression of love.

Feeling better, but not at 100% Maybe 60%…. Better than the 15% yesterday. – went back to work, mainly because I had far too many meetings I couldn’t afford to miss. Accursed Bronchial tubes!

Physically achy from the coughing, but otherwise doing ok. Got a nosebleed right before my 10am teleconference… that was a hoot.

Later tonight, after dinner, I got to replicate my hulk icon from yesterday… so… there we are. *Blarf*

Heading to bed at 9:30 tonight good rest will mend me up. Poor BHK is coming down with it, too.

“This week a sub-$100,000 rocket belt was unveiled and will be on sale this summer, but that’s the sad thing: it’s still not a real jet pack. Here’s a fascinating inside look at the human-flight industry, full of law-suit scandals, technical difficulties, fuel-economy woes and endless delays. The good news? It all points to the next generation of rocketeer research, with real applications for medical rescue and military technology actually coming on the horizon. From the article: ‘With a little patience, and a little funding, we could actually have the pleasure of grumbling over regulatory issues we never dreamed possible. Like being limited to specific kinds of air strips, because the jet strapped to your back is classified by the FAA as an ultralight. Or being required to wear a ballistic parachute, because Amarena’s Thunderjet design could reach altitudes as high as 10,000 feet (and, for the record, speeds of up to 160 mph, provided someone can solve wind-resistance issues).'” – via /.

Favorite joke of the moment –

The Secretary of Defense is giving President Bush his daily briefing. He concludes by saying: “Yesterday, 3 Brazilian soldiers were killed.”

“OH NO!” the President exclaims. “That’s terrible!”

His staff sits stunned at this display of emotion, nervously watching as the President sits, head in hands.

Finally, the President looks up and asks, “How many is a brazillion?”

Here’s the full description of what’s up with my back, according to the MRI –

Findings: There is decreased signal density emanating from the disks between the L3 and S1 levels. There are posterior protrusions of the disks between these levels. The vertebrae are normally aligned. The conus is normal.

There are no areas of abnormal contrast within the canal.

Conclusion:

1: L5-S1 level: There is an extruded left sided posterior disk herniation at the L5-S1 level. The disk protrudes 6mm posteriorly. This causes compression at the proximal aspect of the left S1 nerve root. There are also moderate left sided facet hypertrophic changes. This causes mild narrowing of the left neural foramen.

2: L3-L4 level: There is a small left sided posterior disk herniation at the L3-L4 level. This causes a mild flattening of the left anterior thecal sac contour.

Basic breakdown – knee extension (L3), ankle dorsiflexion (L4), long toe extension (L5), and ankle plantar flexion (S1) are issues, in addition to pain/numbness.

More info on Lumbar and Sacral vertebrae.

Chinese food at the in-laws, and 3:10 to Yuma – Not a bad way to spend Thursday night. I Zzzzed off at the end, will have to catch up tonight or tomorrow for the thrilling conclusion.

Remarked with Chris that I’ve not seen many migratory birds this year, but then again, I’ve been working longer hours! More daylight to look during the weekend.

Mo’ Snow today, but nothing stuck. Bah!

Not many folks in wheelchairs in my vicinity, but there are a *lot* of people with white canes / red tips walking around. I wonder if there’s a local lighthouse for the blind nearby, or if DC just has good support for them? It’s rather odd not seeing anyone on wheels… perhaps the metro has a specialized service for them.

Not to be melodramatic or anything, but I’m trying to remember a time when no part of my body was in pain… that sounds so teenager-emo. I guess my physical situation has been “if it’s not one thing, it’s another” for as long as I can remember. I suspect that it’s the status quo for most folks over 30.

Interesting reveal about the Clinton Campaign via insomnia. I’ll be wanting to see how that plays out, if it is true. Most of the source comes from here. Which also mentions counter-behavior by the Obama campaign.

Humpday! Midweek, and it feels it. I was happy to rediscover that we get President’s day off next month… Three-day weekends are a wonderful thing. Added bonus is that my b-day falls on a weekend this year, so that Saturday is mine, all mine!

BHK and Cathy got together today to do more straightening and space management at the house. One recent change is the move of the love seat from the office to the living room… newtcam archives show that Pye doesn’t seem to mind the change of pace.

Maybe we’ll have room for some bookcases under the North-face windows, with the tops clear for kitty-climbing and general sunning.

Poor Pye must be a little chilly in that picture – he’s all fluffed out. Cold, or resting off a horsing around match with Newt.

“After eight years and some $65 million, the state of Maryland is taking its first steps to return to an accountable, paper-ballot based voting system. Governor Martin O’Malley has announced an initial outlay of $6.5 million towards the $20 million cost of an optical system which will scan and tally the votes while the paper ballots are retained as a backup. The new (or old) system is expected to be in place by 2010 — or four years before the state finishes paying off the bill for the touch-screen system.”

Had a bit of a nightmare about using the walker last night. Forgive my recycling of old doodles. Dreamt of being poked and prodded, cut open and stapled shut.

I’ve already had two surgeries.. one in 1994, and another in 2003.

Makes me twitchy, just thinking about it. After being cut up, I had to go shopping for tennis balls to put under the walker’s feet.

Milton Blahyi, a former feared rebel commander in Liberia’s brutal civil war, has admitted to taking part in human sacrifices as part of traditional ceremonies intended to ensure victory in battle.

He said the sacrifices “included the killing of an innocent child and plucking out the heart, which was divided into pieces for us to eat.”

There had been numerous rumours of human sacrifices during the 1979-93 conflict but this is the first time anyone has admitted publicly to the practice.

Mr Blahyi, 37, is better known in Liberia as “General Butt Naked” because he went into combat with no clothes on, to scare the enemy.

He is now an Evangelist preacher, who prefers to use the name Joshua.

Why things suck – knees and backs. See.. I knew it was a bad idea to walk upright! – quoted below.

Shouldn’t evolution have taken care of our blown-out knees and aching backs? Instead, evolution may be to blame; chimps don’t tear menisci or herniate discs like we do. It could be that our knees and backs are such a pain because we insist on standing upright. When our ancestors stood up on two feet, they stumbled upon a much more efficient way of walking that uses 75 percent less energy than knuckle-dragging. Over the next several million years, natural selection refined the structural modifications that keep our torso centered over our lower half as we put one foot in front of the other: longer legs, knobby knees, an elongated spine. But those adaptations can be a bit of a kludge.

By stacking the thigh bone directly on top of the shin bone, we’ve saddled our knees with more weight than they can handle. Even when you’re just strolling down the street, the pressure exerted on your knees is three to five times your body weight. During more strenuous activity like running or climbing stairs, it can be double that. By the time you hit 30, the cartilage that distributes your weight across the joint has already begun to wear away. The tissue loss may eventually lead to osteoarthritis, and the shin and thigh bones will begin to rub against each other. This so-called wear-and-tear arthritis sends about 5.5 million people to doctors every year.

The same thing happens to our vertebrae, which weren’t designed to sit on top of each other in one weight-bearing column. With time, the cushions between the bones lose some of their spring, and then one day, as you lift a grocery bag or slump in your chair, a disc can bulge out of place. Pain, numbness, and spasms result because the disc is now pressing on a nerve that connects your spinal cord to the rest of your body. More than 80 percent of working Americans will suffer from back pain that’s severe enough to limit their activity at some point during their careers.

Surgery is just a temporary fix for our anatomical woes. After a decade, replacement cartilage can wear away, too. But we can’t blame all of our aches on design flaws. The fact that we spend so much time hunched over a keyboard — level 70 World of Warcraft players, are you listening? — can’t be good. It might help if we all got up off our highly evolved duffs more often.

Bill O’Reilly – You have no idea what you’re talking about. I’ve been homeless, and I can surely tell you that there *are* homeless vets out there. Talk to some of these guys.

Back to work, MLK day 0121 Or R.E.LEE day for folks too racist to even take a day off to say thanks to a black guy. (Well, Virginia’s state Motto is what John Wilkes Booth shouted in the theater.)

BHK and Bug lifted me into work this morning… I said my goodbyes, as he was back in VA by the time I made it home. We had a nice time – lots of stuff to do, and good goofing off periods.

MRI came back, and I have a herniated disk – S1 level, pressing to the left {pic via gray’s anatomy} – (S1 nerve impingement from a herniated disc may cause loss of the ankle reflex and/or weakness in ankle push off (e.g. patients cannot do toe rises). Numbness and pain can radiate down to the sole or outside of the foot.

I’d like this to mean that I can get repairs done to a previously thought dead area. I suspect that I may have to have surgery down the line – Still early to tell.

To counter flying_blind’s wtf flickr moment – I don’t know how old the news is, but I just learned that the library of congress has a flickr account. Cool, neat stuff like this made me add ’em.

I’ve had music by TMBG in my head all week… I Palendrome I and Birdhouse especially. Sakes, but Jay Leno has gotten gray.

KFC dinner and an omelet at the in-laws tonight… BHK made it there about 10 minutes after I arrived. Nice time, gabbing with family about this and that – got to talk to Em on the phone a bit, too! Caught Danny on Skype, too… he was watching the debate feed on CNN. Me, I’m not caring much for any of the current batch of politicos, but it looks like he’s going to vote for Hillary, based on her platform.

The AP has a story on Netflix’s move to head off expected competition from Apple: the company will lift limits on streaming its movies for most subscribers. The story reports on rumors of an Apple movie-download service that may be announced by Steve Jobs on Tuesday. In the past Netflix has imposed limits on how long its subscribers could watch streamed movies; for example, those who paid $16.99/mo. could stream up to 17 hours per month. The limits will end on Monday for most subscribers (except for those paying $4.99 for two DVD rentals a month, said to be a small minority). Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez wants to give you 100 gallons of free heating oil to help survive the cold cruel capitalist winter. The hogshead of liquid warmth is available to anyone enduring a financial hardship who fills out a handy online form.

Eligibility is determined with two questions: First, do you live in one of these 16 states?

Maine, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Washington DC, Delaware, Maryland, Alaska, Wisconsin, Michigan, and Indiana.

Second, do you need the oil? Need is relative, but if you have a family and make less than $40,000, you probably qualify. Citizens Energy, which administers the program, evaluates each application on a case-by-case basis and issues eligible applicants a voucher redeemable for 100 gallons of CITGO heating oil.

It’s almost sweet of our communist friends to shove the inequalities and harsh realities of capitalism in our faces with a program that actually helps people pay for an increasingly unwieldy cost of living expense.

For more information, call Citizens Energy at: (877) 563-4645, or fill out their online application.

Quickie follow-up – We didn’t see Juno – Both showings were sold out. Instead we hit Golden Compass. It was visually pleasing – script wise and acting wise, not so much. Ah, well. Sad day when armored polar bears and zeppelins *done right* can’t make up for an otherwise poorly paced and poorly acted film.

A reminder – Compass is rated pg-13. Not for little kidlets, despite talking animals. There are some scary and violent moments not suitable for most young kids (or nervous grownups.)

Babysitting Miss Tigger today while the in-laws are off to Marion and Salem – doing some house care and visiting Larry’s Folks.

Other than that, we’re just taking it easy after I get my shots – Maybe we’ll catch Sweeney Todd tomorrow as a matinee?

A meme and then adios for now, dear journal.

Little political meme going around – who I seem to match most.

Gravel? Richardson? I’m woefully unaware of who they are, yet they topped my political list. I don’t know if that means the test is accurate or not.

I found out today that ol’ RobbChar got engaged! I’m really glad to hear he’s got a partner and a happy life! I may be going to the wedding, in a year’s time or so.

BHK made tasty Tacos / Taco salad… good eats! I’ve been spoiled this week food-wise!

Two homeless guys from the other day – The PG station on the green line is a pretty sad place. these two had enough resources to stagger on and shamble to a seat…. both were massively out of it, due to disabilities either ingrained or added with outside substances. Possibly both. The next sop, a policeman came aboard and lurked next to them for the bulk of the trip… as soon as he left, they began slap-fist fighting. Nothing serious, but I’m glad I got off at the following stop… it’s just sort of depressing to see folks like that.

HAM-A-RAMA!
Ham-A-Rama! – First sighting of Hickory Farms product…. and it’s called HAM-A-RAMA… contains “cheese food” called Chub, “Beef Stick”, and those little strawberry candies in addition to the aforementioned Ham (with water added).

1028071413.jpg
Flyball – When we went to visit with Amy, I snagged a quick snap of the pooches running… there are some pretty speedy critters that like to play fetch! It was good to see her and her family, however briefly.

I hate it when Ty is right about stuff like this. I’m pretty sure I’d throw in with robot overlords, too. (Also, Zod in 2008 might work.)From his entry

We’re already giving up our freedoms — our right to privacy, gone. Warrant-less arrest, gone. Right to have your vote counted is super-gone depending on the state you live in, right to stand trial, gone — we have torture. We already have all the downsides of a supposed robotic takeover, but we’re being cheated of the upside! I say, if this is the world we’re gonna live in anyway, at least let the robot overlords have their shot. World peace, technological utopia — and no crime! The robot overlords’ crime control is swift and merciless.

Busy day at work – they had me before I even sat down – doing a lot of quick database fixes. a few items got confused, fortunately, we’re all good about keeping proper backups to all triggers, tables and such before doing any fiddling.

This is National Take Your Teddy Bear to Work Day. Ah well, I missed it! Maybe next year. Probably not. I wouldn’t mind getting a Plush version of a Water Bear. (also known as Moss Piglets)

Tasty Junk food treat – Kellogg’s Cereal Straws– I’m a bit more partial to the Froot Loops version over Cocoa Crispies, but both were snacky-good. The first think BHK said to me was that “Matt is totally going to review these, and you’re going to have wanted ’em, so I beat him to the punch”…. and they are yummy, even without milk.

The Office was one of the better episodes in a long time… funny, and bittersweet, too. Ugly Betty is just ludicrously goofy as well.

Moment of lyric – via – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oeNO56xNlZo

Well, I’d like to visit the moon
On a rocket ship high in the air
Yes, I’d like to visit the moon
But I don’t think I’d like to live there
Though I’d like to look down at the earth from above
I would miss all the places and people I love
So although I might like it for one afternoon
I don’t want to live on the moon

I’d like to travel under the sea
I could meet all the fish everywhere
Yes, I’d travel under the sea
But I don’t think I’d like to live there
I might stay for a day there if I had my wish
But there’s not much to do when your friends are all fish
And an oyster and clam aren’t real family
So I don’t want to live in the sea

I’d like to visit the jungle, hear the lions roar
Go back in time and meet a dinosaur
There’s so many strange places I’d like to be
But none of them permanently

So if I should visit the moon
Well, I’ll dance on a moonbeam and then
I will make a wish on a star
And I’ll wish I was home once again
Though I’d like to look down at the earth from above
I would miss all the places and people I love
So although I may go I’ll be coming home soon
‘Cause I don’t want to live on the moon
No, I don’t want to live on the moon

Went to Game night yesterday at the Clampets – met some nice folks and chitty chatted… didn’t do a lot of gaming.

A pair of CPAs, Clare- a Teacher of chemistry at the Naval academy, a network cable guy (Eric) in addition to Brent (travel agent), Alison (Pampered Chef Home sales), Nick (not sure what he does) A pretty fascinating study in “nice people who don’t share any of my opinions on things”. A pretty conservative, heavily church-going bunch, but very kind and tolerant. I think that Amy would like Nick, and that Kev would really dig Clare, if I was of a match-making bent. The game we played was a “get to know you” sort of thing, where you have cards, and try to figure out what a person say if asked questions like “Where’d you last get groceries” / “How often do you Vacuum a month” / “How many Piercings do you Have” / “Favorite Politician”.

It was a little shocking to me to hear otherwise similar to myself types say that they thought George Bush was their favorite politician, without a shred of sarcasm or irony. I’ll do better to pretend I’m in bizarro-world next time I make my guesses.

Picked up lots of goodies for Bugah and Em for the co-birthday celebration next weekend – Em got Moon Sand, Aqua Dots and a little robot-kitten – Bugah got a Wave-style skateboard, and a 4-up Nerf rocket launcher. I think that they’ll be pleased. Plus, I want to play with the Moon Sand and Nerf Gun. BHK picked up some glow in the dark filler Aqua Dots too, so I imagine she’ll be “helping” Em make some neat designs as well.

Tonight, we did a more game-oriented game night (One long game of Apples to Apples, and a quick game of Aquarius – Chris won both!) with the in-laws and Louise, after Pizza and watching When Harry Met Sally and a Carol Burnett show blooper reel/retrospective. Strange that there was no mention of Lyle Waggoner.

And another one gone…

WACO, Tex., Aug. 27 — Attorney General Alberto R. Gonzales, whose tenure has been marred by controversy and accusations of perjury before Congress, has resigned. A senior administration official said he would announce the decision later this morning in Washington.

From New York Times

Lunar Eclipse Tonight! (Well, tomorrow Morning) – I suspect that I’ll be able to see it when I first get up for work. Portions of the pre-dawn total lunar eclipse will be visible, weather permitting, across the country. Only in the West will the entire Aug. 28 event be viewable before sunrise, however.

The moon enters the Earth’s full shadow, or umbra, at 4:51 a.m. EDT (1:51 a.m. PDT). It enters the total-eclipse phase at 5:32 EDT (2:52 PDT) and the event ends after sunrise on the East coast and at 4:22 a.m. PDT.

So… Amazon does groceries, now? Nice idea, especially if they don’t charge shipping on bills more than $25. That’s good to know, in the event of some rare items going missing… I wonder if there’s a way to order stuff that’s very local?

I totally agree with MightyGodKingIf more history books were like Warren Ellis’ and Raulo Caceres’ Crêcy, this would not be a problem. At all.
(Warning, language.. as if I have to tell you, dear journal.)

Yesterday was a beautiful day, even though we spent the majority of it indoors. I think the weather is just about perfect for kayaking now… not too hot, but nice, clear and sunny. 88 degrees is doable – 112… not so much.

After such a long, hot week, that was some beautiful weekend, wasn’t it? And apparently, the beauty of the weekend is spilling out on to Monday morning: Karl Rove, President Bush’s controversial deputy chief of staff and senior political adviser, will resign at the end of August. After he packs up his Palisades home and heads back to the Texas Hill Country, Rove will reportedly leave politics and plans to write a book about the Bush years — do you still get to claim executive privilege when your job involves working in your slippers?
