Tuesday – 9402

Another *busybusy* day at work, but eased when I got home – BHK made supper of the remainder of the sloppy joe mix became taco salad fodder, with a side of veggie taquitos. Good stuff… BHK and I watched the Vampire Ventriloquist’s Dummy episode of Middleman – the show continues to shine. Venture brother’s first half was pretty spiffy, too.

Other things that brought cheer – seeing these kitty pictures in the archive… both were taken at the same time – both kitties sucking up as much sunlight as they could hold. Newt was totally whited out, and pye looks very comfy on the purple couch.

The nice folks at NPR have done us all a favor and taken some used Kinoki foot pads to be tested to see if they’d drawn anything out of a guinea pig reporter’s body. Guess what? They didn’t.

Reporter Sarah Varney bought some Kinoki foot pads and wore them to bed. She also subjected her husband to the (alleged) detox treatment. In the morning, they both awoke to the stinky brown mess that the advertisement had promised. Not convinced that the brown stuff had actually come from their bodies, our hero took the foot pads to a lab and had them analyzed and compared with unused pads.

“Compared to the blank that’s almost identical,” said the scientists. “It looks like three of the same sample, basically.”

A doctor from UC Berkeley confirms the scam diagnoses. Your body already eliminates “metabolic waste” and “toxins” through, um, other means…

“For many hundreds of thousands of years we’ve been successfully eliminating them through the usual means, which is urine and feces, and there has been no demonstrated need to accelerate that.”

So what is all that gunk in the pad? We’re not really sure, but it shows up if you hold the pad over a pot of boiling water. Who knew distilled water had “metabolic waste”?

Had the in-laws over for hot dogs and maybe the last good corn of the summer. Larry and Chris came over – Larry did corn while I worked the grill. BHK made a tasty chocolate-cheesecake mousse pie for dessert! good stuffs.

Thankfully, my tooth isn’t being as bothersome as it was last week – the trip to Dr. Wolf seems ot have done the temporary trick – I go in for a temp crown the top of september, and two weeks after that, I get a permanent one.

Water on Mars: confirmed.

Laboratory tests aboard NASA’s Phoenix Mars Lander have identified water in a soil sample. The lander’s robotic arm delivered the sample Wednesday to an instrument that identifies vapors produced by the heating of samples.

The lander itself added, on Twitter, “FTW!” (I imagine and hope that’s “for the win”, not the other one… “f*** the world”.)

A spinoff from Philips Research, the service gives small businesses, designers, artists, and hobbyists access to prototyping tools that were once available only to the largest corporations. The fee for a typical printed object is $50-$150. Their video shows the steps behind the process.”

Cathy and Dave came over for a “farewell dinner” – they’re moving to Colorado next week. They shuffled out of the house pretty early last night – we had some delicious baked ziti, zucchini parm and ice cream and pie for dessert… over a game of apples to apples. I dominated the first round, but the second was much ore neck-in-neck with BHK. Surprisingly, there were no tears or sad goodbyes – I guess because they’re still going to be around for a week or so.

Disney has announced that they intend to shutter the Adventurers Club in downtown Pleasure Island come the end of September. I want to try and convince them otherwise.

It’s not as if the AC has been singled out; they’re closing down all the clubs in the area with the stated intent of making the area more “family friendly.”

Although the various over-18 venues on the island might fall under the label of not being conducive to family enjoyment, this most definitely does not describe the Adventurers Club. Yes, it has an active bar, but so what? If the presence of a bar made something adult-oriented, TGI Fridays would not be a family establishment. The fact is that every time we have attended the Adventurers Club, there have been kids of all ages in attendance, entranced by the club and its wildly talented cast.

For those unfamiliar with it, the Adventurers Club purports to be a 1930s private club for globe-spanning adventurers, having a pledge drive for new members. Guests mingle freely with colorful characters, interact with animatronic statues and puppets, and watch demented improv comedy and shows by the Club’s “daredevil” officers. If you have been there, then you know a night at the Club is always great entertainment. If you have not had the opportunity, then we’re about to fight to save it so that you may yet have the chance.

There is an on-line petition going on that already has thousands of signatures, and I wish them well (and have indeed signed it myself). But on-line petitions only go so far. What corporate types respect is actual letters, because it means that the writers took the time to write it, put it in an envelope and slap a stamp on it.

If you want to help preserve one of the single greatest entertainment experiences in Disney, then I urge you to write to:

Robert Iger
Chief Executive Officer
Walt Disney Corporation
500 South Buena Vista Street
Burbank, CA 91521-4873

I cannot stress enough: Keep letters civil. Polite. Family-friendly, if you will. If you have attended the AC, talk about your experiences and how much the place means to you. If you haven’t been, underscore the good things you’ve heard about it and your intention to attend in the future.

And never forget the Adventurers Club credo:

We climb the highest mountains,
just to get a better view.
We plumb the deepest oceans,
because we’re daring through and through.
We cross the scorching desert,
martinis in our hand.
We ski the polar ice caps,
in tuxedos looking grand.
We are reckless, brave, and loyal,
and valiant to the end.
If you come in here a stranger,
you will exit as a friend.
KUNGALOOSH!

Feel free to cross post this wherever you think it will do any good.

I’ve only ever been to the Adventurers Club once, but it was great fun… I’d really like the opportunity to take BHK with me to see it again with fresh perspective. A place at Disney styled after the pulps, with Tom Leher music and the occasional cocktail (with or without alcohol) ? Yeah, I’d say that’s worth keeping.

Sunglasses that Hide your Face from Cameras – Article and video:

They work by mounting two small infrared lights on the front. The wearer is completely inconspicuous to the human eye, but cameras only see a big white blur where your face should be. Building them is a snap: just take a pair of sunglasses, attach two small but powerful IR LEDS to two pairs of wires, one wire per LED. Then attach the LEDs to the glasses; the video suggests making a hole in the rim of the glasses to embed the LEDs. Glue or otherwise affix the wires to the temples of the glasses. At the end of the temples, attach lithium batteries. They should make contact with the black wire, but the red wires should be left suspended near the batteries without making contact. When you put them on the red wire makes contact, turning the lights on. It’s functional, but we’re thinking that installing an on/off switch would be more elegant and it would allow you to wear them without depleting the batteries.

Bagel, cream cheese, strawberries and pineapple for breakfast – BHK and I slowly worked our way into the morning today.

In-laws came over to do some gardening with BHK- all of it clothed, thanks. Tilled the area, replanted our “volunteers”, potatoes, zucchini, cabbage and carrots that came back after last year’s planting. I’m really looking forward to seeing what sprouts first!

I was feeling pretty out of it today – rested from 1pm to 5, and off to bed now at 10. I hope I’ve got my brains back together for tomorrow… I imagine that I will.

Microsoft’s not only delaying Windows XP SP3 temporarily, but they’re also pulling off Windows Vista SP1—which has already been pushed out to automatic software update—because of potential incompatibilities. Most of us don’t need to worry about it since this is just an issue with MS’s SQL Servers that affect Microsoft Dynamics Retail management systems. Unless you’re running a SQL database at home to track the chore distribution for your family, you can go ahead and manually fetch the update and install it yourself.

Tonight, we’re headed to Bilvil the Beachfront Cafe for supper – review to follow tomorrow!

Looks like Clinton is still in the race after Texas and Ohio. Ah well, at least this will give Chris and I something to debate about some more on the road to work. I get sort of stuck with Obama, mostly because he’s the other contender for the Dems.

50 things I’ve done meme continues – 21-26 I ran out of time! Will continue until I hit 50 if I can as the week progresses. – I …

21.’was part of a team that coded a geopositioning system to help find missing kids. Basically, find a point on a map, call everyone within a certain distance on the map with a pre-recorded message alerting folks to be on the lookout. In addition to finding missing people, it has been used cross-country for evacuations, fire alerts, boil water, and other trouble items. Sadly, the same type of software has been put to more commercial use by telemarketing campaigns including politicians and localized ads. Biggest issue – the calls tend to originate from a VOIP or difficult to track location, so you have trouble contacting them to be put on the do not call list… unless the message you get includes a contact number. I guess any tool can be an offensive weapon in the wrong hands. I use hammers to build things, not to cave in skulls… I promise!

22.’made the final leap to become a lacto-ovo vegetarian in 1990. Last hot dog was on 7/4/90… tried being vegan for a year, and didn’t like it. Sorry Milk, Eggs and Cheese… you get eaten. I sometimes lapse on things that have more than 4 legs, or less than 2. (Conch, Clam, Crab, etc.) Despite my diet, I still am of considerable size, both height and circumference. I am taller than I am around by a reasonable facor… I’m not a sphere.

23.’have been homeless for approximately a month, living on the beach in South Florida. It’s not fun, it’s not like camping, and I don’t care to repeat it ever again. I can’t imagine it in winter up north. If I ever meet that kid (last link in my entry here ) that said it’s just a question of attitude, I just might be prompted to introduce him to what that sort of fear, depression and hopelessness feels like.

24.’saw my brother sink from happy, healthy and smiling guy to a conniving, manipulative, strung-out and sick junkie.

25.’submitted myself for product testing when money issues were especially tight. Toothpaste was worth $20, use for a month and get paid after a tooth check. I got in on a big study – It was a pretty sweet deal at the time. Given an asprin, put in a sensory dep tank a few times a day, have blood drawn each time you come out. I got $1700 for it, a month’s worth of food and board, and electricity to play on my Atari ST during the downtime. The downside was that I was confined to the grounds for a month and very few of my friends at the time came by to visit. I could call out and say hello, but seldom did anyone call me…. which caused me to review my friendship with those people quite a bit at the time. I shared a room with another study member, but he left a day into the testing because his son passed away. I still feel bad for my first mental response – “I get my own room! Right on!” The biggest problem wit hHazelton was that it was frequently confused with hazelden, a drug rehab center.

26.’told a ghost story to my brother about a monster in the basement that was so convinicng, neither of us ever went down there again without an adult escort. I was about 7, my bro was half that. I was glad when we moved out of that house. Sadly, the story isn’t really that scary to an adult… or that original. I suspect I saw that Dr. Who with the crawling pentacle hand – “ELDRAD MUST LIVE!” Side note, I had a little-kid (non-sexual) crush on Sarah Jane Smith for quite a span. I wanted her as a babysitter more than my actual one.

so, only 24 more to go? ack!

The AP has a story on Netflix’s move to head off expected competition from Apple: the company will lift limits on streaming its movies for most subscribers. The story reports on rumors of an Apple movie-download service that may be announced by Steve Jobs on Tuesday. In the past Netflix has imposed limits on how long its subscribers could watch streamed movies; for example, those who paid $16.99/mo. could stream up to 17 hours per month. The limits will end on Monday for most subscribers (except for those paying $4.99 for two DVD rentals a month, said to be a small minority). The company has 6,000 movies available for streaming, compared to 90,000 that you can get delivered in the mail.

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez wants to give you 100 gallons of free heating oil to help survive the cold cruel capitalist winter. The hogshead of liquid warmth is available to anyone enduring a financial hardship who fills out a handy online form.

Eligibility is determined with two questions: First, do you live in one of these 16 states?

Maine, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Washington DC, Delaware, Maryland, Alaska, Wisconsin, Michigan, and Indiana.

Second, do you need the oil? Need is relative, but if you have a family and make less than $40,000, you probably qualify. Citizens Energy, which administers the program, evaluates each application on a case-by-case basis and issues eligible applicants a voucher redeemable for 100 gallons of CITGO heating oil.

It’s almost sweet of our communist friends to shove the inequalities and harsh realities of capitalism in our faces with a program that actually helps people pay for an increasingly unwieldy cost of living expense.

For more information, call Citizens Energy at: (877) 563-4645, or fill out their online application.

This animated music video was created by 64 Communications students from Concordia University in Montreal as part of the Open-Source Cinema project. The students “rotoscoped 1-3 seconds of video each, over a period of three weeks. (Most of them had never used Flash before.)” The results are fantastic – with a variety of engaging styles in the final product.

They say: “We were inspired by Bob Sabiston’s digital rotoscoping (as seen in Snack and Drink, Waking Life, A Scanner Darkly), and our readings and class discussions about copyright and creativity. (Course textbook: Christine Harold’s OurSpace: Resisting the Corporate Control of Culture.)”

Temperatures are expected to remain well below freezing again overnight, which can mean danger for the District’s homeless population. The city has put out a reminder to call their Hypothermia Shelter Hotline should you spot anyone trying to sleep outside when it’s this cold.

By calling 1-800-535-7252, the Shelter Hotline can provide transportation to emergency shelters and distribute items such as blankets, gloves and jackets.

If you live outside the District, Express has compiled a list of numbers to call in Montgomery County, Prince George’s County, Arlington County, Fairfax County and Alexandria.

“A DARPA-funded research project at UCLA has wrapped up a set of animal trials testing the effects of inhalation of the brain chemical orexin A, a deficiency of which is a characteristic of narcolepsy. Monkeys were deprived of sleep, and then given a shot of the compound. ‘The study … found orexin A not only restored monkeys’ cognitive abilities but made their brains look “awake” in PET scans. Siegel said that orexin A is unique in that it only had an impact on sleepy monkeys, not alert ones, and that it is ‘specific in reversing the effects of sleepiness’ without other impacts on the brain.’ Researchers seem cautious to bill the treatment as a replacement for sleep, as it is not clear that adjusting brain chemistry could have the same physical benefits of real sleep in the long run. The drug is aimed at replacing amphetamines used by drowsy long-haul military pilots, but there would no doubt be large demand for such a remedy thanks to its apparent lack of side-effects.”

Yikes. Low hit 17 degrees Fahrenheit after the sun went down – read as “as I was waiting for the bus.”

I’m well-armed against the cold with my super warm jacket and scarf… but tomorrow, I’m bringing gloves, so I don’t have to stuff my paws into my jacket pockets for comfort.

Last night’s supper of left over shepherd’s pie, mac & cheese and veggies was wonderful… but tonight’s falafel is going to be even better. I can smell it cooking right now, and I’ve got some serious hungries going on.

I can’t say it enough… BHK is an awesome cook. Heck, she’s awesome, period.

I wonder if anyone I know has caught I am Legend yet? We want to see it, but BHK is afraid that the dog will die in a bad way. From the preview, it looks like it probably does – that means I’ll end up watching it on the PSP on the way to work. I get mushy about animals, too.

“In Service Pack 3 for Office 2003, Microsoft disabled support for many older file formats. If you have old Word, Excel, 1-2-3, Quattro, or Corel Draw documents, watch out! They did this because the old formats are ‘less secure’, which actually makes some sense, but only if you got the files from some untrustworthy source. Naturally, they did this by default, and then documented a mind-bogglingly complex workaround (KB 938810) rather than providing a user interface for adjusting it, or even a set of awkward ‘Do you really want to do this?’ dialog boxes to click through. And of course because these are, after all, old file formats … many users will encounter the problem only months or years after the software change, while groping around in dusty and now-inaccessible archives.”

After reviewing more than a few elements of the OS, I am in agreement with

Microsoft has extended the life of Windows XP because Vista has simply not shown any life in the market. We have to begin to ask ourselves if we are really looking at Windows Me/2007, destined to be a disdained flop. By all estimates the number of Vista installations hovers around the number of Macs in use.

That’s a pretty sad market share… no offense to mac folks.

Since he didn’t numb me very effectively, the anesthetic wore off in under 20 minutes. I was able to enjoy a little stuffed crust pie… and a few quepapas (tasty glorified tater tots) for a lead-in.

I’m about done with Penguin Soccer… it just doesn’t stand up to 4-player, and 2-playerwise… I think that the novelty has worn off. Even with a few tweaks, it just needs more work. I’m leaning more towards Binary Homeworlds and Martian Chess as far as icehouse / pyramid games of choice stand out. A few games of Zamboni Wars might bump that into the running, too.

Game design on Pumpkin has come to a standstill… I need to pick up the pen and get back on working the crimps out of a few sticky elements. (Not to Mention Giants and Dwarfs / Brier Patch )

For a lot of Playable games (and more than a few not-so-playable ones) , icehouse.org is still pretty handy. I’m not doing the competition this winter, as I prefer to try and design a good game first, and then worry about what pieces are needed – rather than the other way around. Heck, you can play Martian chess with pennies, nickels and quarters if you wanted to.

Homeworlds seems a lot simpler to play in person than on superdupergames, but it is nice having the hard-coded rules keeping track of what can and can’t be done.

BHK made a tasty cake for the gang’s thanksgiving at work… orange cake with a cranberry drizzle on top. Yummy… vaguely reminded me of fruit loops.

Newton and Pyewacket are getting to be quite the little chums… perhaps it’s due to the colder weather, but they’re downright affectionate with one another these days. Newt lovingly headbutted Pye the other night – that’s something totally unanticipated.

Kindle looks nifty, but $400 is way too much to spend. I’d probably totally snag it for $200, so maybe next year. I’ll be very interested to see where the next version of the technology goes… but it’d be worth it for just free rss reading and wikipedia on the fly, along with whatever books I put on there myself. Throw in some basic PDA functionality, and you’ve got me, but good. EV-DO could work wonders, too. It reads prc files, so all of my palm ebooks would be just fine, too.

Two interesting links, especially for around thanksgiving – Sent to me by BHK Both give food to the needy by asking for a story from you or just improving your vocabulary.

I’ve been thinking about the polar bear swim on new year’s day already… I suspect strongly that I’ll do it again. I really need to schedule some workout time… I’ve been just flopping onto couch when I get home… stretching and strength-building is a real must. Perhaps a specific time to do so would work for the best…. 8pm, probably. After supper, but well before bedski. Not tonight though – took Chris out with us to Mexico for supper. Churro-yum!

Temperature this morning was right at freezing… the dew on the grass was frozen, and gave a very satisfying crunch when trod upon. I like the look of flora with a white icy highlight.

Contrails in the sky this morning were so plentiful, I feared it was a missile attack for a split second. There must’ve been two or three dozen crisscrossed white streaks in the sky.. it seemed unreal.

The TV grid — which shows will have episodes until when, because of the writers’ strike.

The networks had estimated that a backlog of finished scripts and completed episodes would keep many series on the air until early 2008. But with numerous show runners refusing to supervise non writing services on their programs — duties that include overseeing casting, editing and directing — production has stopped on several leading series and new episodes of a number of shows will vanish around Thanksgiving. Little Red Riding Hood is skipping down the road when she sees a big bad wolf crouched down behind a log.

“My, what big eyes you have, Mr. Wolf.”

The wolf jumps up and runs away.

Further down the road Little Red Riding Hood sees the wolf again and this time he is crouched behind a bush.

“My, what big ears you have, Mr. Wolf.”

Again the wolf jumps up and runs away.

About two miles down the road Little Red Riding Hood sees the wolf again and this time he is crouched down behind a rock.

“My, what big teeth you have Mr. Wolf.”

With that the wolf jumps up and screams, “Will you knock it off, I’m trying to poop!”

BHK got me a Wii for our anniversary! I spotted it pretty much as soon as I sat down in the living room.
My Wii Code is 2667 2084 2657 3823. Get your own WiiBadge at WiiBadge.com!
Our online Number is 2667-2084-2657-3823 if any Wii peeps would like to add us.  Leave your wii number in the comments if you’d like me to add you!

Now I just have to find a game to play online with Bugah, since it seems the sports game that comes with it doesn’t go online multi-player. So far, I’m very good at baseball – terrible at tennis. BHK is excellent at bowling.

Also via BHK – PSA –Dogs in Danger – Stuff like this breaks my heart. (Dogs in Danger is a nonprofit national shelter outreach program at the forefront of a grassroots movement trying to help shelters save the lives of millions of innocent dogs.) I honestly can’t stay on that page very long – it makes me too sad.

Happy Birthday, Peradouro!

I had no idea that Batroc the leaper was a play on Batrachia, – I feel like a bit more of a copy cat with my old super “Grenouille” now.

Speaking of Marvel – Beaucoupkev‘s got me wanting to pick up a used copy of Marvel Ultimate Alliance now.

It’s got MODOK for corn sakes. I can only hope it also has Arnim Zola.

Zombie Fluxx will be waiting for us by Thursday! (And Aardvark has a demo pack coming, too! Hooray for spreading the fun around in the store!)

Transformers is out on DVD today – we’ll add it to the Netflix queue – even if it’s terrible, I’d like to check it out. I make a lousy robot.
but BHK’s cracks me up.

Calvert county fair – we only popped in for a moment to look at the critters, check out the crafts and produce competition, grabbed a free book each from the library tent and then got a Corn dog for BHK and a lemonade for myself… however we paused a few times to do some extra purchases on the way out.

a multitude of pictures here , more to follow eventually.

We were only out and about for a brief period, but it was good to get a touch of fresh air after being under wraps this week. We spent the majority of the evening in the loft, relaxing and watching far too much tivo. Star Wars Family Guy? meh. interesting recapture of the shots, but not worth a whole episode. Slow day at home this morning/ early afternoon.. I was tired/ headachy and BHK still allergy-ridden, so we took it easy and napped / rested until the sun dropped lower in the sky. We hung out, watched a few episodes of League of Gentlemen – I was tired and grumpy, and still quite enjoyed the casual ly surreal evil of it all.

Headed off to annapolis and grabbed a snack at The Fix deli – good potato knishes, and BHK’s Turkey Sammich looked tasty. (some new people working got the order a little out of whack, but it was minor stuff like leaving off condiments and not toasting bread.. easily fixed.)

Right about 5ish, we headed out to hit the Annapolis games club – BHK, Brent, Alison, Paul, Neil, James, Brien and I played many rounds of apples to apples, Fluxx, Aquarius, and Chrononauts (Early American history version) – surprisingly, Aquarius beat Fluxx as the popular new game of the night. I think the matching and quick launch rules were just a little bit faster to run with, due to no body text on any of the cards. Brien seemed to really dig Fluxx, however – He brought a lot of Rio Grande games and Big M – I really wanted to investigate Power Grid and Manila. I suspect that we’ll be playing more of the German-style games next go-round at the main club. Brent and Alison invited us to thier regualr game night at home, too – about 5-20 people show up at any given session, and it should be fun. I liked the group – everyone was interested in learning new things, playing fair and being good sports. We all ordered chinese food at about 7, and I think we called it a night at just about 11:30ish.

We stayed too late to bounce from there to the Cheeky Monkey Sideshow, but we’ll probably catch Swami Yohmahmi tomorrow at the renfest.
