6803 – My land is a multi-colored land

August 2, 2004

via the FDLE –

http://www.fdle.state.fl.us/press_releases/20040802_Threat_Level.html

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Tom Ridge announced today that the threat level is being raised from Elevated-“Yellow” to High-“Orange” for the financial districts of New York City and Washington D.C. There is no specific threat to Florida and the state remains at a “Yellow” or elevated level along with the rest of the country.

“Florida remains at Yellow. The public can be confident in the fact Florida has a sound domestic security strategy and protocol in place,” said Florida Department of Law Enforcement Commissioner Guy Tunnell. “However, it is important for Florida’s citizens and visitors to be vigilant while continuing with their daily activities.”

Precautions the public can take are very similar to steps residents would take for a hurricane. They include:

  • Continue with normal activities while being aware of your surroundings. Exercise caution while traveling.
  • Be alert to suspicious activity and report it to your local law enforcement agency.
  • Develop an emergency communications and disaster plan and exercise that plan.
  • Prepare a disaster supplies kit to sustain your family for three to seven days. It should include a supply of water, food, flashlight, a battery-powered radio, and a first-aid kit.

6787 Mango / Spyware / Pi Approximation / Look out.

Dang. It’s obviously mango season again. They’re hanging fat on any tree that hasn’t been harvested yet. I imagine every office in the city has someone bringing in grocery bags full of ’em, pulled of before they can be allowed to rot on the ground…They have been known to make the local birds and other small animals drunk when the fruit is consumed after fermenting in the sun for a few days.

That puts me in the mood for a tropical fruit salad… maybe some mango/banana/lime/coconut.

I won’t go into what a raging mango is. Them that know, know.

New Tech seems ok, so far. Intelligent, but I worry that along with that comes a fundamental laziness. He reminds me a bit of my old buddy ramscan, in that he’s quiet and laid back, but once you open him up, he seems nice, and likely lot deeper than you might see on the surface.

My good deed of the day – (figured I’d share, after helping 3 people pull if off systems yesterday.)

Instructions on how to remove Mysearch, aka Mywebsearch, My Search Bar, My Way Speedbar:
To uninstall Mysearch first close all open browser windows. Then click ‘Start’ menu, then select ‘Control Panel’ and open the ‘Add/Remove Programs’ option. Find “My Search Bar” in the list of programs, and click ‘Change/Remove’ and follow the prompts to remove them. Other components to look for and remove are:

My Way Speedbar (Smiley Central or other FWP as applicable)
My Way Speedbar (AOL and Yahoo Messengers) (beta users only)
My Way Speedbar (Outlook, Outlook Express, and IncrediMail)
Search Assistant – My Way
My Web Search (Smiley Central or FWP product as applicable)

This procedure should completely remove Mysearch. If you have any problems or to be certain all its components have been removed, scan your system with an adware removal utility.

Sure, March 14th is Pi day… but today is Pi approximation day, (22/7 if you record it euro-style.)

6775 a die-lemma.

Hmmm… do I risk the rain, and take a journey to the Seaquarium today? I have to decide if I want to journey that far South again. Upside, I might get some spiffy pictures from the metrorail, if nothing else.

To get there, I’m going to take the 55 to the central term, from there to the Lauderdale Tri-Rail station … then take Metrorail to Brickell Station. From there take Bus B to Key Biscayne, this will drop me off in front of the park. MapPublic Transportation Trip Planner

I’ll percolate on it for an hour and decide then.

Meantime, here’s a happy mind flayer, enjoying his breakfast.

Random Scotto factoid: I’ve never liked using blue ink, especially from a ball-point pen. I think it has an odd look about it, and black has much better contrast. Red’s ok in small doses… valentines or highlighting errors. I don’t mind “fun” colors like purple or green.

I wonder how that blue caught on? Is it cheaper? Was it really fun and different when first released? It seems to be the color of choice at schools.

I have very small handwriting. Depending on my mood and level of weariness, it can go from fair to totally illegible.

A few sites for positive change – None of them cost a penny but can help to do good works.

The hunger site – free food to the hungry
Breast cancer site – Help to fund free mammograms
Child Health site – Help save young lives for free
Rainforest Site – help to preserve our rainforests
Animal rescue site – Feed an animal in need.

Ok.. now that I’ve built up some positive karma, let’s whine a little about whiners.

In The Silence of the Lambs the egregious psychiatrist Dr. Hannibal Lecter explains to Agent Clarice Starling why he killed one of his own patients: “I simply could not endure his interminable whining any longer. Besides, his therapy was going nowhere. Believe me, Clarice, there isn’t a psychiatrist in the country who wouldn’t like to refer a few cases to me.”

That sums up how I feel about a lot of the journals out there. I’m glad that I have the easy way out, and can opt not to read them or even link. I feel that a few of the journals I’ve seen (none that I regularly read, though some certainly exist on my friends friends page) in passing are written by “professional victims.” I can’t help but wonder if a daily whiney / angst journal can be good, because they’re getting it out of their system, or if it’s a bad idea they’re feeding that sense of misery and isolation to the exclusion of any other feelings. I suspect it’s more often the latter. I do know that journals will sometimes have hostility, angst and melancholy in them… heck, I do it enough. The flipside, of course is the folks that write that way out of a desire for attention or coddling. “Woe is me, woe is me” loses a lot of its strength after hearing someone say it for a year.

The ones that complain and *only complain* deeply, heartfully about the most non-issues are what get me. If something bugs you, do something, and make a positive difference. The world’s a big place with plenty of room for improvement.

This cartoon sums it up pretty well.

DESPERATELY SEEKING FREQUENT FLIER MILES

PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT – via daniela

as most of you know, i am a case manager for homeless folks with aids. yesterday, the mother of a client of mine passed away. her funeral is in philadelphia tomorrow. i have called every agency, every airline – the best they can offer me is a slightly reduced rate (still around $400). all san francisco agencies are tapped out. if ANYONE out there has frequent flier miles which they do not plan on using, and are willing to donate them to get a man home to bury his mother.. please contact me as soon as possible. reply to this message – i’ll keep my e-mail open.

please pass this message on in your own journals if you can. i have GOT to make this happen.

Please contact her via her journal, here.(added last minute as I polished off this entry)

Got my times mixed up for Doctor today… I swung by there at 10:45 for my 11am appointment, and it turns out it was at 1pm. MY physical therapy is at 1:30p, so I went downstairs to PT, and the woman there was enthusiastic about having me work right then, as she had a cancellation, and wanted to head out today by 2pm if she could (taking her daughter to the orthodontist). I didn’t do traction today, but the workout with heat and stim worked nicely.

It seems my original PT guy quit to go work in Brazil for a private individual. My mind stereotypes, and wonder if it’s a big crime leader or something.

Went to the doctor, and I’ve got to stay on physical therapy, and may end up going to get another epidural done. Two weeks and time will tell.

In the office a kid was playing with *MICRONAUTS* today… the time-traveler one. My gosh, they’re so small! Either they re-released them with different, smaller molds, or I really have gotten a lot bigger since I was 8. (The latter is more likely.) Only about 3 1/2 inches tall. On the way home I noticed the lizards are out in force… I had one hop on my crutch and ride across the street with me, a brown anole with a red throat and a really pretty speckled back in browns and yellows.. Many small ones were out and about, so I suspect a hatching season has kicked in. My rider was bigger, and pretty well fed…I made sure that he got off before entering the Newton-Zone, however.
Lizard!

Rather cool out this morning…. quite nice, really. Tomorrow, I’m going to remember the GPS, and measure my downhill speed over the drawbridge. I suspect that I’m hitting 25ish mph there. (But I could be vastly overestimating) Note to big-breasted women with too-small bras… the “split-boobie foursome” look isn’t good. Find a top that fits, please. I worry that a too-tight brassiere is cutting off circulation, or is painful in some way.

This weekend I’m swinging by PPF to pick up a bag of 100 glow in the dark zombies, and the Zombies!!! game… a friend there is giving me an employee discount, where he’s throwing in the extra zombie-bag for free! I’ve got to make a point to send a few zombies to friends and family.

Some maintenance guys doing yard work out back… Newt’s fascinated. It’s impressive to me that he’s not frightened of the noise. I think that if he got near a blower, he’d take off, though.

A pic of newt from a few months ago... I'm thinking of submitting it to kittypix or color theory

Spiky, sporadic dreams last night… I don’t remember them too well, because I neglected to commit them to memory right as I woke. I do remember that they were pleasant for the most part, but some adrenaline in there, too.

I’m air?

Those of you who own Internet domain names, or are just computer geeks, have undoubtedly heard the VeriSign horror stories. Deceptive business practices, locking out domains, and the subsequent investigation into their operations.

You can transfer to get far cheaper, more reputable and reliable service at GoDaddy or Dotster. ~$8 a year, as opposed to Verisign’s ~$23 yearly fee.. And they’re not bastards.

1/3 the price, and not the creeps that verisign seem to be, in my opinion…(as far as I know, anyhow)

Now, back to the party.

Thanks to Ariel for the head’s up!

Even if you had the old version, download the new ad-aware. The update caught 14 new components on my system, even though I just formatted it about a month ago.

Random Scotto factoid – My favorite quote from Bewitched:

You are quicksilver, a fleeting shadow, a distant sound.
Your life has no boundaries beyond which you cannot pass.
You live in music, in a flash of color.
You live on the wind, and in the sparkle of a star.

Cave Photo, no natural light, lit with flashlights.

Telemarketers that call at 8:20 on Saturday morning have a special place in Hades reserved for them.

No, I don’t want the Miami Herald. The paper sucks, and if I wanted it, I could read a non-ink-messy version online for free. No, I don’t care that it’s a special deal.

At least I have the little three tone autodialer wave file on my answering service now. (thanks, rgladiator !)

Art Conspiracy is Nice! They allow for many types of galleries, and is easily used, including an internal journal and comment system. If I didn’t already have LJ, I’d consider using that as a base of operations.
