8967 – sat – BHK b’day!

A brief summary: BHK’s Birthday!

cake
birthday

I managed to butter her nose by sneaking caches of a dollop in the nightstand (on a plate), and then by instilling enough paranoia in her to make looking for it in there ridiculous. A year ago today, I proposed to her – more a gift to myself, or us both. I’m happy that she said yes.

We visited the bayfest from about 11:30 to 1:30… got home before we both spontaneously combusted. We quite enjoyed the fest, and it’s sort of a shame that it’ll be the last one. (Or at least, there are no plans for more in the immediate future, anyhow.)

Items consumed:

  • Funnel Cake.
  • Kettle Corn
  • Egg Rolls
  • Orangeade
  • Water, lots of Water.

Items of note – toothless man gumming a hot dog and beer

BHK bought me a classic 60’s style Spider-man lunch box for 50ยข – good find.

Very cute but brief parade of:

  • a fire truck
  • a local celebrity I don’t know
  • 7 men in fuzzy admiral’s hats
  • several little girls with pom-poms
  • several kids in gi uniforms, swinging shiny golden nun-chucks
  • a stilt-walker in a Frankenstein costume about 10 feet tall.

On the way home we stopped in at a storefront spa that recently surfaced – it might be a place for BHK to visit to redeem her birthday “beauty coupon” I put a hand made thing in there for whatever she wants to do at Scalped, but it’s totally transferable.

After we recovered from the heat (drank a lot of cold drinks once inside, we realized that there were no soft pretzels at the fair, but we did have some in the freezer, so we continued the fair-food experience in the comfort of our air conditioned living room by consuming pretzels and remaining kettle corn while watching Ace of Cakes… we didn’t have any energy to do much more than that, despite the highly event-filled weekend here. Due to the heat, we skipped the local B.I.G. book sale at the tobacco warehouse, the opening of the Ren-fest (not a problem, it runs for 9 weekends!), and totally forgot about the Greek fest until late in the evening. It was simply too effin’ hot.

Once the sun turned the heat back a notch, we headed over to the in-laws for Chinese Food, a little present-opening and viewing of one of BHK’s presents… Grease and Grease 2… the heat turned into storms, so we had to shut off the tube and a/c for a bit at their house, but aside from that, it was a pleasant evening… Louise made it over, too!

We headed back right before the end of Grease two – BHK and I were both tuckered out, and were fairly sleeping through the video.

Tomorrow, we have a birthday party at Tina’s place!

8938 – Sunday

Crashed hard last night once we got back – comfy weekend, sort of like this found shot of Newt from Friday.

newtcamroller

This morning BHK and I lazed in bed for a good chunk, spending a little time reading or fooling on the laptop, before getting up and heading off to points non-bedlike. We played a bit here and there in yucata, superdupergames, tribal wars, and bella sara – I’ve discovered that I do better sitting cross-legged over laying back with the lappie.

Post-laziness, we headed out for a random road trip, and ended up going to Dream Wizards which was exactly like what we were hoping for (but didn’t get) when we hit the Strategist a couple of weekends back. A large gaming area, very well-stocked collection of games of every stripe, and attentive personnel. Of course there was the standard “teen-boy scent” – BHK noticed the was one half of the female population (the male population was maybe 25 or so) – the other a young kid, probably 12-13, playing Pokemon happily amongst the sea of boys. BHK also got to see a low-grade temper tantrum from one of the other players in a tournament… complaining that his purchased booster pack was useless… stomped and slapped the pack down amongst the poor counter-folk. I suspect that he was maybe about a half-hour to an hour to being ejected from the premesis.

I couldn’t resist picking up a copy of Polarity (thanks again for the hint, Keethrax!) and Cosmic Wimpout … a Yahtzee-like dice game I used to enjoy back in high school. I think the last time I played it was about 20 years ago in Mr. Eck’s Marine biology class, fourth period. Not sure of the exact day, but it was near the end of the school year in 1987.

Still no leads on the Pirates “Glittery” boosters, like Amy’s. BHK must have a giant crab covered in glitter to destroy ships with!

After that, we hit the Home goods store, shopped the Halloween goodies and got a few little household treats.. Some green cups, sugar free blueberry syrup, and Halloween sprinkles for cupcakes later in the season.

We consulted our good friend Zagat, and found an entry marked Lighthouse Tofu – a total wildcard as there weren’t enough reviews to give it any scores for service, menu or whatnot. (The link goes to the yelp page, which would’ve been more helpful, had we thought to look it up first). I think we stumbled upon a local Korean fave… The place was packed and we were the only non-asian couple in sight.

We ordered more than we thought, as everything was served home-style – even though we didn’t ask for it, we got an appetiser of Miso soup, followed by a broad assortment of dishes with a little sampling of this and that – Bok Choy in some Oyster sauce that was tasty but quite spicy, some minced garlic in clam sauce, some manner of peppers in a cool/spicy soup, cucumbers (my fave of that lot… sweet and spicy), and some sprouts in sesame oil. – all came before what we had ordered. BHK had the tofu vegetable soup that came to the table still at a rolling boil and served with a raw egg on the side – to be added to the soup manually. I got an assortment of sushi, of which I think the Tofu sushi was the winner. The “prima vera” one of mixed veggies was tasty, but the weakest of the lot – Tofu, tempura lobster, and cucumber all were just amazing.

They serve water with a little green tea added, which is disconcerting at first, because it has an off-yellow/green color that I have seen come out of the pipes in some well water communities – suffice to say that it was clean and delicious. No worries there.

As a palate cleanser, they also serve a little rice cooked in green tea at the end of the meal – I liked it!

Our host was friendly, and I think that he assumed we had never been out to eat at a place like theirs. He was kind enough to move us to another table when we realised our little 2-up location wasn’t going to hold all the food we had coming. – and then explained the difference between light and regular soy sauce.. also warned us against wasabe (he seemed pleased when I was enjoying a healthy dollop dipped from same mixed with the soy on my cucumber roll)

Oddly, he didn’t give any food consumption tips regarding the egg in the soup, which I think was the most culturally mysterious of the lot.

On the way out, he took me aside, and passed me a pair of strange little bottles covered in text that I couldn’t read, and a small oval with larger text inside (picture to follow – maybe I can get talonvaki or pilarcruz to translate it for me)…. said it was dessert, and to enjoy.

It looked like milk, and smelled faintly of vanilla, so I shrugged and took a swig. I was not expecting the lemon flavor at all, but it was pretty dang tasty. I don’t think BHK was as impressed, but she liked it fine.

Also on the way up and back, we got to see the Mormon Temple which is amazing to watch rise up over the horizon as you approach. The place is huge and beautiful – while lovely, the pictures don’t do it justice at all.

We had one last stop before heading home… the in-laws. Chris and Larry did a great job of pickling our cucumbers – about 30 mason jars worth. We won’t be needing any store-bought pickle-type product anytime soon. BHK is planning on using the remaining 3 or 4 jars to do some pickled peppers ala Peter Piper, although we don’t quite have a peck.

I’m just wondering where we’re going to store 30-odd jars of preserved veggie. I guess the garage is a reasonably cool, dry, dark place for ’em. They have to steep in the brine for a brief period before eating. I wonder how long they’ll stay good? If you don’t break the vacuum seal, I imagine we can store them fairly indefinitely – not sure how long they stay good once that seal is broken, though. I imagine that won’t be an issue, as this family loves ’em.

8916 – sunday

Woke up creaking like the tin man, and my eye was aggravated by some sort of dust particle… between the swollen eye and bent over stance, I should’ve been ringing bells and screaming for sanctuary all morning.

Yesterday’s smoothies were so terrible that we went to the grocer, got some yogurt and fruit, and BHK made some jim-dandy, extra tasty smoothies for our breakfast supplemented by hard-boiled eggs and biscuits today.

Today we went to a place that held a lot of fond memories for me as a young gamer-geek. The Compleat Strategist… There was one in Hollywood, Florida way back in the 80s… a source of many fond memories. It was a sad day about 18 years ago when it burned down… even when some supposedly smoke-damaged merchandise appeared at the new Dragon’s Lair a few months later. I sometimes wonder if the “Dragon” reference was an inside joke about the fire. Rumors abounded at the time, though I don’t know of any actual validity to the same.

We landed at the Strategist in Falls Church, Virginia… and… well, I’ve been spoiled by Aardvark, I think. I was fairly underwhelmed, even though they have a huge amount of stock… probably four or five times that of Little Aardvark’s.

Nice thing about the Virginia place was that it was mostly clean – no dust on any of the good in the front, and the books were well-organized by game and title. If I’d been there looking for RPG stuff or Wargaming stuff, I’d have been set.

Unfortunately, I was looking for parlor games. The little corner in the back reminded me of the “pervy” section of old video stores. The light bulb overhead was dim, the packages heavily manhandled with cellophane and cardboard torn. The games were in semi-alpha order…. but not quite. Some stuff was on pegs, some on shelves, some boxes lay half open. I might’ve wept openly for the poor pente tube in the corner without a visible lid or board inside.

I can’t find a thing that I want. BHK spots Treehouse and Ice Towers on the wall… I get excited, and ask about some other games, almost sure that he’ll know something about one or more of these… almost all are major award winners, and have a pretty large following.

Do you have

Nope, nope and nope. We had money for a game or three more burning a hole in our pocket, and finally asked…

“OK, then… based on what we mentioned… what do you recommend? We like fun, fast-paced games with a mix of strategy and random chance. What do you have that’s cute with a deck of cards and a die in it?”

The proprietor was too busy playing mechwarrior with another regular at the store to give us any more answer than “if it’s not on the shelf, we don’t have it…”

Not a very talkative fellow, unless he was reciting how many bonuses he had to hit the other toy robot on the board. So much for me pumping him for info regarding the old florida store or reminiscing… I suspect that the Florida CS burned down when he was maybe three years old.

That sort of disappointed us… BHK asked him about a high school clique game, and he said he’d never played it, but a guy friend did, and didn’t much like it. That was the most extensive review we got from him… heck, those were the most words spoken to us at one time.

Still no other advice, so we browsed for about a half hour or so, found a few games, and noted to purchase them elsewhere. Chez Goth, Treehouse with Martian Coasters, Puerto Rico. That’s like $100 or so worth of games, I’d guess. He lost the only sale it looked like he might make that day.

The best aspect of going was that we got some freebie Star Wars constructable ship-combat game as throwaway swag. We got a spare for Amy, too, for when she comes up to visit next week.

{edit – We got a response to this entry from the manager of the store, shortly after it was published. See it here}

On our way to another game store in the Virginia area, Alan rang us up, and we all went out the the Lebanese butcher for some tasty falafel, hummus with pine nutes, and baba ghanoush.

Instead of dorking around, we trundled over to his place in the city… *very* nice. Alan has a real flair for design, and his home is like a showcase… TM, BHK, and I gabbed with him for a bit about Pollack’s strengths and weaknesses, including the Guggenheim dirt, and he played piano for us for a bit. He’s a very talented guy, and a kind host… I’m glad to have him as part of the family.

8915 – Saturday

Nice restful day out and about. We took a little trip to College Park and actually drove past the heart of Looney Labs, in fact. (Saw the address in the phone book, and did a quick scan while in the area) Had we realised that the place wasn’t just a house, and was actually a office up above a home, I think we might have stuck our noses inside to say hello. They’re not too far off, so maybe another road trip is in the cards?

geekWe went to two comic book stores… the “Collector’s Crypt” and a Liberty Books and Games – “We’re a libertarian bookstore and sell comics from disorganised piles” – The stores were pretty messy… Liberty’s, fortunately had a few games right by the front door, including a trusty, if dusty deck of Chrononauts – just fine, as it’s wrapped in plastic (and was the primary reason we went there in the first place). Funny thing about that store was that all the libertarian stuff was neatly organized… though I suspect that was in part due to a lack of interest by the patrons. The comic books, vintage paperbacks and whatnot else were stacked more than a little haphazardly throughout the place. Standard stereotypical comic shop, not bad, but far from good – Plus was that the proprietor was more than happy to help us locate what we were looking for.

Upon leaving, we chanced upon a local Smoothie King. In comic book guy’s voice – Worst Smoothies Ever. I don’t know what was going on, but bleagh. The iced and blended tush-sweat from a llama… with a hint of blueberry. Something very wrong with those drinks… like picking a scab, I had to keep tasting it to figure out the worst aspect of the drink. Is it the metallic aftertaste? The vaguely compost-like banana? The brownish-color of our sludgy slurry? Oh, for a glass of water or kerosene to wash away the filth! Perhaps I exaggerate… but not by much.

At the Crypt, there was a lot of interesting stuff in a space smaller than my closet at home… however the hat-trick of:

  • no air conditioning
  • poor lighting / too dark to read covers
  • sort of creepy-skeevy proprietor

caused us to toddle out fairly swiftly. All other fears aside, no A/C in a tiny room filled with dusty books is just a recipe for a moldy sneeze fit. Crypt is indeed a good moniker for the place. Though it was disturbing that foodstuff (twist-tied bags of trail mix and malted milk balls) was stored in places that would give him some heath code violations, the proprietor (looking akin to the unshaven Spaulding Clown of House of 1000 corpses fate) was watching “Beyond Westworld” on a bootleg DVD, (it seems that the bulk of his business is out of print or third-generation gray-market copies of Japanese / Mexican Wrestler / TV pilots). BHK picked up some Andy Griffith Show trading cards to calm herself after tasting the horrid smoothies. Additionally, they carried no Treehouse /

We hit the grocer on the way home in the hopes that we can make some decent smoothies sometime tomorrow to finish counterbalancing the effects. Yogurt ahoy!

Well, enough of those parenthetical statements… perhaps I’ll take a page from Ldy’s writing, and incorporate footnotes. Nah.

8906 – Saturday – 07/07/07!

Today was pretty full of activity. In a nutshell: 2 more Zagat locations (Davis’ Pub was also in the guide) – Jalapeno’s (outstanding food – limited lunch menu, but the dinner looks amazing Tapas works no matter when) and Sputnik Cafe. (good cocktails and dessert, OK entrees) in between those two (lunch and dinner), we went for a little road trip to Gibson Island between shopping for a couch and our quest for Giant Diet Grape soda. Gibson Isle was a bit of a disappointment, with no Gibson girls in sight… worse yet, it was a private island, so no lookie-looing for BHK and yours truly, dear journal.

Today was the Wedding of Fred to Adam’s mom… supposedly lucky due to the 7/7/7 activity, but I don’t know… hopefully it’ll work for ’em, but the odds are rough on a couple who have collectively four divorces behind them already. Lots of fireworks due to the abundance of weddings so close to the 4th of July… we still have a boatload to set off for Louise and Adam’s B’day coming up next week.

We *were* successful in locating about a dozen or so diet grape sodas… we’ll miss ’em when they’re discontinued. There is something magical about purple soda that fizzes bright blue… and tastes really, really good for a diet drink. BHK will miss it more than I shall – I’m perfectly content with Diet Cream soda and Diet Cherry/Cola whatever. (Currently, Dr Pepper cherry vanilla is my fave, but BHK is partial to the diet cherry Pepsi) I wonder what medieval man would think of such stuff… too sweet by far, I suspect. I’m still amazed at refrigeration… the easy access to ice and cooling makes life so much more simple.

The couch-quest goes even on… the holy trinity of color/size/design continues to elude us.

Several Groundhogs sighted in the fields during the day, and many will-o-wisp dragonflies at twilight. Oh! that reminds me!

This friendly little guy was crawling up my sleeve yesterday – probably dropped on me from the shade tree. I wonder what sort of bug he is? He was pretty gigantic, maybe as long as my thumb, though not nearly as wide. I like his little “eye-spots” quite a lot… when I gently brushed him off into the parking lot, he didn’t flap his wings – just sort of plummeted to the pavement with an audible smack. I was worried he had been broken as a result, but he seemed perfectly content to walk away as we drove off in the direction of the Kwik-E-Mart.

8905 – Friday the 6th

Lots done at work today… a good ending to the week. I have to get with CS first thing on Monday (or after she’s back) about streamlining more processes. I’m pretty pleased with the current learning curve and the gang there thus far.

Outside of work – Autorealm – reminder to self – investigate other uses.

Tonight, we’d planned on a visit to see Sweeney Toddbut the venue wasn’t up to the task of seating us. However, we may make plans make it easier in the future. (Thoroughly Modern Millie may have better odds.) instead, we wandered around Annapolis, had a lovely bite to eat at Davis’ Pub (the onion rings were especially to my liking) and then went to see the latest Die Hard movie. Not bad… took place in Baltimore / DC (sort of a one globby city) and had lots of explosions and beaten up Bruce Willis in it.

We also got to visit the Maryland Kwik-E-Mart – pictures will follow of this nifty bit-o-advertising later in the week. Our Clerks were I. P. Freely, and Mae B. Drunk.

I would really like to get this… (via ectoplasmosis )

Count Gottfried von Bismarck, who was found dead on Monday aged 44, was a louche German aristocrat with a multi-faceted history as a pleasure-seeking heroin addict, hell-raising alcoholic, flamboyant waster and a reckless and extravagant host of homosexual orgiesโ€ฆ

The great-great-grandson of Prince Otto, Germanyโ€™s Iron Chancellor and architect of the modern German state, the young von Bismarck showed early promise as a brilliant scholar, but led an exotic life of gilded aimlessness that attracted the attention of the gossip columns from the moment he arrived in Oxford in 1983 and hosted a dinner at which the severed heads of two pigs were placed at either end of the table.

When not clad in the lederhosen of his homeland, he cultivated an air of sophisticated complexity by appearing in womenโ€™s clothes, set off by lipstick and fishnet stockings.

Thereโ€™s a page over at MySpace that features what theyโ€™re cloyingly calling โ€œminisodes,โ€ which are episodes of television shows edited down to six to eight minutes. Having watched an episode of The Facts of Life and one of Silver Spoons, I really wonder what they did with the other eighteen minutes. (via lore )

Was going to the Kwik-E-Mart after work, see also , but instead got a fresh haircut (as did BHK) at Scalped.(we love Margaret and Ami)  Perhaps tomorrow?

Thinking about getting into letter-boxing in addition to geocaching… it seems more quaint and less commercial than what geocaching has become. BHK is more about the hikes than the technology, and I think we both would enjoy just getting out and wandering around a bit.

Clues

King’s Landing Park, King’s Landing Road (off Huntingtown Rd).
Enter King’s Landing Park, and go the parking by the fence on the far side of the pool. Across the fence you can see the sign that says “Explore your Chesapeake”. Go to the path to the right of the sign, and take the right fork to the straight path. Almost immediately on the right, you’ll see a little sign by the woods that says “Trail” and a large sign with a roof that talks about Orienteering. Veer off the path and enter the woods by the Trail sign. You might want to grab a walking stick for the Flower Box.

Smiley Box- THIS HAS BEEN MOVED
At the start of the first board walk, look to your right. 24 paces away will be a fallen tree with its roots sticking up in the air. Right underneath the roots is the Smiley Box.

Flower Power Box
Continue to follow the path towards the wetlands. Where the path splits left towards the water and a sign that says “A Marsh for All Seasons” go right, away from the water. About 25 paces, look on the left and see 3 very large trees that grew out of one bottom, immediately off the path. Walk up the hill behind it, and see another smaller light colored tree that is about 4 paces behind it, then a large tree about 5 paces behind it at the top of the hill. Flower Power is hidden in the tree at the bottom back side under leaves in a notch in the tree.

8899 – Sunday

We spent most of the day out and about, Geocaching with the Newsoms. They’re really into it, with a little over 100 finds in recent memory. It was fun tooling around a bit and seeing what’s what. I also dropped off tinkle pig in a cache… time for her to see the world. I retrieved a toy soldier cast from civil war bullets, who will ride with Bruce Moose and Gaytor until a suitable resting ground is found for him. The cemetary caches are almost always my fave – the woods were a hoot too, but ticks are a real fear for the kids, especially since Em was out sick just recently. (Heck, nobody wants lyme disease.)

Aftwerwards, we took a quick pitstop at Aardvarks, had an ice cream and picked up kanoodle for BHK (I’m sure I’ll be playing it too.)

Spent a little more time puttering around Solomon’s Island, went to Stoneys for dinner. (their treat! yum!)

On the road between points, I got a call from my Mom, and it turns out that Bro isn’t in a work crew, but just a rehabilitation center. Taking classes, etc. Hopefully some of the lessons will stick, but if not, at least he’s out of circulation for a while.

After that, we paused at the Barker’s to water the Mom-in-Law’s plants, and to do a little dock-walking. I paused for a breather upstairs, but before I could get my nap on, Adam and Kendall showed up to say hi and to drop off some fireworks.

Man pummels vampire peacock

NEW YORK (AP) — A peacock that roamed into the parking lot of a Burger King in New York City was beaten by a man who insisted it was a vampire.

Animal control officials in Staten Island say the bird was beaten so fiercely that most of its tail feathers fell out and it had to be euthanized.

The seven-year-old male peacock wandered into the restaurant parking lot and perched on a car hood last week. Charmed employees had been feeding it bread when the man appeared.

A restaurant worker says the man grabbed the bird by the neck, hurled it to the ground and started stomping it. She says when he was asked what he was doing, he responded, “‘I’m killing a vampire!”‘

Employees called police, but the man ran when he saw them.

8890 – Monday

Pirates was played, but no witch trial. Instead, we opted to watch Kung Fu Hustle, because Danny has never seen it. Dan ended with appropriate fondness for the film. The only side effect is now I want to dance a bit like the leader of the axe gang. Next effort might be to show him Shaolin Soccer, but it might be a little less powerful than Hustle.

Marine Museum on Saturday – Pictures from the sailing time to follow… we had a nice time, but I fear we may have commuted a bit too much for Danny. He tires of travel easily. Clarkes Landing had some good din-din, and wasn’t as pricey as Stoney’s. Danny Loves Aardvark Comics, and would probably be there three times a week if he lived nearby.

On Sunday, we went out to breakfast in Deale, and then did a spot of fossil-hunting (piccies are in the entry prior). We all found a pretty decent collection of Shark’s teeth, beach glass and unusual fossil-matter. Almost went kayaking, but it got too hot. In evening, I won a game of super munchkin, and Danny won a round of pirates.

BHK made some very spicy Thai curry. Green stuff that was oh so hot… I loved it, but I needed a glass of milk to keep the heat bearable as I went. I’ve got a big bowl of it for lunch today, too!

New Slang words in use: Twerp-wad [used by BHK on a bad driver] – I responded by calling the same guy a douche-knuckle, and Danny chimed in with a Son of a Booger.

Saw a Falcon in our yard today… I guess that’s bound to happen when we have so many squirrels lounging about, chasing after peanuts we put out. If any make it, photos will follow.

Sunday’s Auto-transcribed phone message suffered a bit in translation… dark side of being at on the bay with static.

I need to get back into the habit of doing my 7,6,5,4,3,2,1 year ago thing. Once august hits, I’ll have a daily entry for seven years. Harder to stay on top of it these days, but at least I can fold in a quick one-liner or picture about places or things to remember.

Bugah and Neil came over for a sleepover last night – while Neil went on a fishing trip, Boog, BHK and I all did as many summery type things we could think of on his first day off from school.

amongst the things done –

  • Trip to the boardwalk candy store to get all manner of bad things, including a pack of candy cigarettes (He knows full well how bad ciggies are, but they do have awesome powdered “smoke” and tasty gum)
  • Swimming in the pool
  • Playing tennis with Adam
  • Playing video games with me – (The Taiko drum on lost out to the donky congo bongos… a lot more of a workout, too. He’s also quite adept at SSX tricky, Godzilla Destroy all Monsters melee and Rampage.) It was especially nice to smash Tokyo, London and San Fransisco with him. I’m not as big a fan of Anguirus as I thouht I might be… both of us prefer 90’s ‘Zilla or Megalon.
  • Birthday / Father’s Day Cake cake for Neil (he qualified for both)
  • Crabbing on the dock
  • Watching the Fishing boats come in

(note to self – some cheats to unlock all the stuff for next time –

The following cheats are available for Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters Melee on the Gamecube.

Ordinary Jesus fish? I think not! note the upside-down cross! Spotted while looking for work clothes with BHK on Sunday.

Also, my dapper new hat.

Today, for your reading enjoyment, I give you Thaumaturgic Border Protection (355KB PDF), an apparent DHS presentation on the employment of witches, Wiccans, and neopagans to defend America against magickal threats both foreign and domestic. Itโ€™s an entertaining read, if youโ€™re into such things. Link

Wednesday started nice and sunny, but is now raining like a fiend.

IANA went well. I look forward to my follow-up interview in a week.

To celebrate such a lovely event, we picked up me & my katarmi (used, for $15), and a littl lunch at cheeburger cheeburger.

Afterwards, we went to BJ’s to get some supplies – see the difference between cheap food and better-funded adverts. Bobo-kitty brand cat food has eye-boogers. I’m amazed they put him on the can. Our boys don’t use either brand. I can just hear his road-hardened french-waterfront voice..”Ach, Oui, I haven’t felt right for weeks.”

8839 – Hey! Payday!

elephantballoon1
I need an elephant to fly my sweetheart and me away for a bit.

Surprised at the turn of events there โ€“ Network admin position is being elevated from within, despite the outer-ring patrolling for people. I was worried that I was out of the running due to the lack of a driverโ€™s license, but it seems more like an old-boys club issue instead.

Yesterday was ok, overall. We had a dip in the global scheme of things due to some worries and delays which I feel have passed into a more comfortable zone since. There were a few complaints due to timing issues regarding school, testing and whatnot for both of us. The MCSE test isnโ€™t aligning with a schedule that works as well for me as it might, but Iโ€™m going to see what I can wrangle in the meantime, school and book-wise.

My revised goal is to spend at little time working out between gig-seeking sessions in the evening.

There have been a lot of dream fragments lately, working in a factory โ€“ giant gears, jets of steam, lots of levers. The bulk remembers as a building in low light, most of the machinery a dull gold or brass color. There was a sense of moisture in the air and condensing on things, along with an enduring greasy / burnt smell hanging in the air. I donโ€™t remember what I was doing there and in what capacity, but I do recall that there were no other people in the factory area.

Iโ€™m going to get back into a pulpy phase soon, if plans to put some Dashiell Hammett on the PDA in isilo format works out. Iโ€™ve found a really good video compression agent for the psp, and a ton of house / max headroom / shield episodes waiting to be imported. (link to public domain books โ€“ copyright only lasts so long!)

We have a ton of books from the tobacco warehouse sale, too โ€ฆ maybe itโ€™s time I started keeping a paperback in my lunch pail for midday reading.

The sun keeps poking through and giving brief periods of balmy warm weather. In my perverse love for the cold, clammy, gray days, the brief to a few hour long moments of warm sun and bright light seem to be the hostile moments, while the soft rains bring me a cooling cheer. Seeing steam rise from pavement or a low fog through the woods on the road near the bay makes me feel wonderful. I will admit to enjoying the play of sunlight through the fresh green trees on our โ€œshortcutโ€ drive home.

Today, if all goes well, BHK and I will be picking up some more shaved ice. I want to try Tigerโ€™s Blood (and I hope itโ€™s not just โ€œdumb olโ€™ cherryโ€), and BHK is leaning to a sour apple / watermelon combo. If thereโ€™s no Tigerโ€™s Blood, I may well try orange or one of the named flavors that donโ€™t hint at the flavor at all. (Maui-Wowie was a happy discovery). Apparently, BHK wants no part of grape, though Iโ€™m in favor of the stuff.

Iโ€™m looking forward to tonight. Tentative plans include:

  • Shaved Ice
  • Depositing my Paycheck and Mailed Check into the bank.
  • Trip to the bookstore to get additional stuff for my Certifications and BHKโ€™s Bar / Legal.
  • A game of Monsters Menace America with BHK
  • Watching Happy feet.

I get to bug out a little early and swing by the Railway Museum (link) to evaluate much of the hardware there โ€“ Printer, DVD burner, and wireless router. My initial suspicion is that the error exists between the chair and keyboard. A pity they don’t use me to do the website. it needs help.

8835 – Sunday

On our way to the store, we drove past a nearby graveyard and region of greenery that was amazing. The photos don’t do it any justice at all, but some shots were kind of nifty, anyhow. I dig the one where we’re in motion and looking backwards from the car. (the 2nd and 3rd from the end)

Free Comic book day yesterday was extra bonus awesome at Aardvark. Free comics are even better when you can double your haul when you bring a partner with you – 4 books each! I think the winning books were the Umbrella Academy (Hellboy meets nextwave) and Charlie Brown ones. Aardvark is pretty cool… ice cream/ video / gaming / comic book store in a prime location. Friendly, knowledgeable manager/ owners, too.

We picked up a copy of Monsters Menace America for half off… I can take it off of my amazon wish list now.

Also obtained were a few packets for the Bella Sara game. Nice untapped market for card games… young girls from 5-10 years of age. We stopped at Moes for a tasty Mexican-ish lunch to open and review our cards.

Finally met Alan… I’ve heard a lot about him, and he was quite nice. I look forward to getting together with him and meeting JC in the future. We had veggie taco/ burritos for din-din.. I got a bit ill, but all and all, it was a nice night.
