9627 – Monday

Solid Day today – So much so that I snoozed a bit on the train ride home. I got a little extra time, as they were single-tracking on the green line heading toward Suitland station. I guess one was down for repairs.

Things I listened to today as I worked: Jean Shepherd (the guy that did a christmas story) , Phil Harris (Bandleader for Ol’ Jack Benny) I like that Archive.org has a built-in streaming player – I can listen on my laptop in the background while I do my thing. I should listen to Jack too, while I’m at it, but I really Like Ol’ Phil and Alice’s wedding dynamic.

Found out that a coworker of Sean’s got canned for having a wireless device (an ipod touch, I think) – The price you pay for working with certain levels of security clearances. I’ve been some places that forbid cell phones and flash drives, too – just to protect proprietary info. (In my case, it was the courthouse.) Not sure what Sean’s going to do about his entertainment, now… I guess a walkman will have to do the trick, rather than an ipod? Seems sort of stone-age given the technology corridor here.

BHK and I swung by Jerry’s for supper tonight – I got onion and green pepper pizza, she got the chicken "cheese steak" sammich. While we waited for it to cook, we swung by Giant to pick up some goodies for next supper – green beans, peas, broccoli for the noodle dish she’s got in mind… not to mention the chocolate covered bunny grahams (Easter goodies out already?? What about St. Patty’s??) and Old Bay Cheese-crackers, shaped like little crabs. Nom nom Nom.

Smoking dulls the effects of caffeine. As in, you need 3-4 times as much caffeine as a non-smoker to get the same effect. It also has the same effect on some antipsychotics – meaning smokers need a much bigger dose, and if you quit smoking while on them you’ll be overdosing. And if you start smoking while on them, you’ll be underdosing.

Carrot goldfish floating belly up – instead of sacrificing it to the garden, it’s being fed to the squirrels.

BHK bought us some new Pillows – comfy, but I still prefer a minimalist approach under my noggin when I sleep.

Had to get up extra early this morning, to be sure I could make it in to work on time. Snow has melted to form extra-scary and slick ice on the roads and sidewalks outside.

The replacement Clie I got back in march died – bidding for a new one on ebay. I’ll have to make a point to recover my old data – shouldn’t be a problem, since I last backed it up a day or two ago. The only hassle will be re-installing my 3rd party stuff. Astronomer, isilo reader, and tealpaint are really the only items I’ll want back right away. If those bids don’t go through, I may look into a Nokia N810 or possibly a Asus EEE for the same cost as a Birthday Prezzie to myself.

Not a great day today, but tomorrow will be better. Off to a rough start, and a really rough time at work about 4pm. BHK collected more estimates on the Love Cube’s repair, and remains doubtful that insurance will pay the bill. Chris is looking into options on her side of things.

BHK made calzones – her first attempt, and they were delicious. (Mine had broccoli, veggie meatballs, and assorted cheeses in there). Technically, I guess they were stromboli, as she put a little sauce inside the dough, but not a huge amount. I still had some on the side to dip into.

We watched the first half of the Heartbreak Kid, and now we’re calling it a night.

Happy Year of the OX! Happy B’day MissV!

Hectic day at work today – lots done, lots to do.

After work, BHK picked me up, and we stopped by Dream Wizards – unfortunatly closed, so we settled for MOM’s got a few little sundries – beans, bread, veggie-chips

We went to the Vegetable Garden with Todd – he’s in town for a couple of days, and we’re happy to take advantage of having him local! It was nice visiting with him, and hopefully we can catch him again tomorrow before he high-tails it back to South Florida.

Quote of the night – "Should I take the shoe or the duck? … Well, the Shoe comes with maple syrup!" Todd got the Duck, anyhow. I suspect the shoe was tastier.

Back to Work -workworkwork – played catch-up for missing Monday. I was tired to begin with, and now, end of day, I’m dead tired.

Randy Rogers off to work with M.A.D.D. – good for him! I hope the rest of the crew get as good a break as he did.

I dreamt the other day that we adopted all the stray kitties in town, and BHK named the orange one with white feet "Bagel". The other cats didn’t have names, but Bagel was extra naughty – knocking over anything that was knock-over-a-ble.

We loved him (her?) anyway. BHK hollered "BAYYYYYY-GULLLLLLL" every so often when he was acting up.

After work, we did the once a week night ritual of soda and scratch-offs –  no money was won, but we did locate ome tasty chips to go with dinner from subway.

BHK took the Element in to have the tires replaced, but there was trouble with aligning it – She’s bringing it to the dealer tomorrow, to see what the situation is.

Watched a little Gordon Ramsay and Doctor Who, and now we’re off to bed.

Back to work today – Still plenty sick, but I need to get things taken care of, and I’m not dying or anything.

Snow falling as I hopped aboard the train – and it stuck to the ground, crunching underfoot as I walked the last bit from the bus to the office door. It stuck until about midday. It’s about 14 degrees tonight, got up to 32 with the sun out.

Confirmation on Feb 2 off – looks like I’m going to see Punxy Phil after all! Also got the 19th off, so nice long weekend – 20th is off for all in dc – inauguration traffic nightmare averted!

Christmas Tree is outside, drying by the fire pit. I suspect we’ll use it to heat the ring, or cover it in suet and feed the little birdies. We still have fairy lights on the gutter of the house, but they are unlit – probably will come down this weekend.

BHK and I have been listening to old Time radio on XM – She seemed to really enjoy Lucy Ball in "my favorite Husband" on the ride home.

Picked up $4 worth of scratch offs of our weekly gambling habit – won $6! a $2 profit quickly absorbed by her craving for slim jims.

I think I bit my lip while sleeping the other night – probably the ear thing again. Pain is mostly gone now, just a little irritant here and again.

After work, BHK and I had Chinese food with In-laws, and discussed birthday plans for me – BHK has an idea for us to go to Puxatawney, PA for Groundhog’s day –

Newt and Pye have been together for 2 years now. They’ve blended well. They aren’t too aggressive with one another, though they do play rough.

Got an earache last night, I think it’s an infection via the crown. Contacted Dr. Wolf, we’ll see what he advises.

Went to the in-laws this morning (well, about noontime) for some Breakfast – Larry Poached some eggs, and grilled up some bacon, Chris made crab salad. All served on Xmas English muffins. (Do they call muffins something else in England, and "English muffins" just muffins?)

After eating, we watched Superhero move and I got a call from the Momster – our holiday goodies arrived in her mailbox yesterday. Superhero Movie was Basically a parody of Spider-man, plus a few cameos and Leslie Neilson nonsense.

Larry showed me how to make Preacher cookies – chocolate/oatmeal goodies, with no flour in ’em. Closer to Fudge than a cookie, really.

Good stuff – I’ve got to practice making these, I think… they’re easy, but are good eats.

BHK and I headed home early for some rest – watch some old Christmas episodes of night Court and Wings – I pretty much just Vegged out all weekend.

I’m looking forward to a nice long winter’s nap after Tuesday – Vacation (but on-call) from 12/24-01/04!

A few items need to be worked on – biggest ones are file comparing encryption, getting a slacker customer to get on the new system from the old (before the old shuts down totally)  and a system map of our network that is up to date.

Maybe a little vitamin B-12 will pick me up. Until later, dear journal!

Holiday party – won $100 (2x $50 gift cards) –  Wheel of fortune // Hangman is our friend! We did poorly on "guess the person in the baby pictures" part of things, but that’s ok by me. I was just happy to have a midday meet with BHK. 🙂

Introduced her around to folks – most had met her last year – I think Peter was the only new face in the crowd.

After the party, I had to go back to work for a couple of hours, and then we were free to go!

I’m not tip-top, so we headed home, and crashed out early – 9:30 bedtime!

Thursday…just about done watching the first season of  Dexter. It’s interesting, but I think the sister should’ve worked out the deal, long ago, no matter how well trained he might be, or her lack of curiosity.

Feeling a bit fatigued lately, but getting there. I need to send my brother a card or something, congratulating him on being a father, I guess. Somehow, I’m not feeling too festive about it. Ah well – I don’t even know if the little girl will carry his last name or not. Momster is elated about having a grandchild under any circumstances, which is a good attitude, I think. The baby is healthy and happy, as far as I know – can’t ask for much more than that!

Got our first holiday prezzies – Oranges and other citrus from folks in Florida, and an amazon box from Kev. BHK made sure that I did’nt see the invoice slip – He sent his gift wrapped, I neglected to put amazon wrap on the stuff we sent him – I hope my stuff makes it to Cuba in a timely way.

Tomorrow is the holiday party at the office – we’ll see how the terrible twosome of BHK and Scotto do at party games for gift card winnings!

BHK spent the day polishing off our shopping, I think we’re about done!

We hit Thursday’s after work – food was a bit on the weak side – probably will take some time before going back.

Came home and mostly caught up with chores – I played a smidgen of fallout 3, folded the whites, while BHK got the xmas stragglers online.

Updside of cool weather, the kitties extra snugglesome.

We still haven’t finished putting up the tree – lights are on, but ornaments and garland are still in boxes. Likely to happen next weekend, or during the week if there is a slow patch. I need to put together the orange juice car, too – and move pyecam downstairs for kitty/christmas pov video.

Had an off-site meeting the bulk of the day today – informative, and interesting, but I think I’ll opt for the webinar version unless there is going to be any "networking" to be done.

Pleasantly surprised to see Shaun M on the bus ride home – we discussed going to get a Christmas tree tomorrow.

BHK made more pigs in blankets, and we all just sort of are crashing out now.

I’m looking forward to the new tannenbaum, as long as we can find a place to put it in our house.. now that we have the new couch, it’s hard to make room for something of that size.
