The rain was really falling hard this morning… Even though my pickup spot is only a few footsteps from the house, I’m confident that without my umbrella, I’d have been drenched to the skin by the time I arrived there, let along waiting the five minutes for the bus to arrive. I do need a new umbrella, however (something bigger and more rugged). The winds near the beach are quite good at breaking the more namby-pamby of bumbershoots.

More rough sleep last night. It must be the season for it…New moon last night. I can think of a few people that suffered last night, and have been suffering over the course of this week.

Where do you go when you fall asleep? I think that I keep returning to the same land, not too different than the one I live in while awake. There is a stronger element of the surreal, of course, but generally, I don’t notice that there’s a problem until I reflect on it after waking. Newt can change colors, and is as big as I am? It makes perfect sense to me, at the time.

Here’s an irrational but minor annoyance I have. It’s when my image shows up in the dreams of other people. That’s fine in and of itself, but sometimes my doppelganger acts like a jerk there. It’s foolish of me to feel this way, as it’s someone else’s psyche that’s pulling his strings, but I feel somehow responsible for my dream-image’s actions and doings. I’d much prefer that he do an act of compassion or act heroically than do something unkind or craven.

Recurring themes in dreamtime for me are: Pursuit (either chasing or less frequently, being chased), socializing (anything from going to a bar with friends to Christmas morning with my sweetheart and our dream-daughter ten years from now), defending someone from harm, or exploring a familiar, but changed landscape. (That can include a time-shift, decorations for a party, or a disaster like a flood). Things that stand out are unusual quantities, like rains of razors or having someone turned into a chameleon for parking in someone else’s space.

I don’t recall much of last night’s dreams. I know that my visualization before drifting off was a comfortable one. My beloved and I cocooned up in blankets, her resting peacefully in my arms as I began to loll. It’s one of my “happy places” to go. The bed is a soft, living thing, like resting on the back of a mammoth. When Newt recognizes that I’m officially lying down, he’ll come over and lie down on my right shoulder, and nuzzle his face into the angle of where my chin turns into my throat. This permits me to wrap my right arm around him and stroke his back and head while he purrs me to slumber. If, for some reason that location isn’t comfortable for him, he’ll lay against my side or calf, propping his head up on one of my knees. On a few occasions, he’ll even lay on my chest, lengthwise, his head at my throat again, but I can hug him softly with both arms. I do remember waking up two or three times during the night, and finally waking about 9ish from a thick sleep.

I wonder what Newt dreams about… I’ve seen him in restless sleep, maybe a nightmare? Usually he lounges quite quietly. Do cats have REM sleep? I think dogs do. Note to self- look into that.

I can’t help but wonder if dream interpretation books have any value, or if the real interpretive worth is better judged on individual basis. I suspect that’s more of what it’s all about. I think that if I see an anchor in my dream, it probably means something different than if Fred Smith in Wyoming sees one in his. I suspect a lot of the interpretation changes as the viewer grows, too. Dreams I had as a little pod probably mean something other than what I might translate them into now.

I wonder how Danger the turtle is doing? I think about him, Coal, and that gang pretty often.

The Finn is back from her native country, seeing her mom through cancer surgery. It seems to be the season for that, too… Danny’s pop had something done just recently. She brought back chocolate for everyone, which is quite tasty (truffle-filled milk chocolate). The label says truffelitaytteinen maitosuklaa, which has me guess that Finnish for chocolate is suklaa? The ingredients are listed in (FIN) Finnish, (S) Swedish, (GB) English and (EST) Estonian (maybe, unsure). In any language, it’s dang tasty and a pleasant surprise.

Late lunch today, Sandwiches and chips from Champp’s (It’s supposed to have two Ps). The only time I can palate tomato soup is if there’s a grilled cheese next to it.

Mike finally paid me back the money he owes me. Brother slipping me back a healthy chunk too. He’s doing very well these days, and for that I’m happy.

Missed my sweetheart by inches… I got home 3 minutes after she popped offline. dang! maybe I’ll see her before sleepies.

Well, off to bed to read more of A Canticle for Leibowitz … something I’ve been meaning to read for about 15 years now. Not too shabby…*very* Catholic. Interesting perspectives on post-apocalypse rebuilding too. I’m going to take this one slow.

Title: Mesopotamia
Album: Mesopotamia

Turn your watch
Turn your watch back
About a hundred thousand years
A hundred thousand years
I’ll meet you by the third pyramid
I’ll meet you by the third pyramid
Ah come on, that’s right, I want
we’ll meet in Mesopotamia

We’re going down to meet it
I ain’t no student
Feel those vibrations
Of ancient culture
I know a neat excavation
Before I talk I should read a book
But there’s one thing That I do know
There’s a lot of ruins In Mesopotamia

Six or eight thousand years ago
They laid down the law
They laid down the law
aa aa aa aa aa aaa
Six or eight thousand years ago

I’ll meet you by the third pyramid

to meet in Mesopotamia

We’re going down to meet it
Now I ain’t no student
Hear those vibrations
Of ancient culture
I know a neat excavation
Before I talk I should read a book
Mesopotamia that’s where I wanna go

A wave of husband killings.

Iranian women are becoming increasingly sick of the male-dominated Islamic nightmare land in which they live. Divorce is not an option.

While Iranian men can divorce almost at will, a woman who wants a divorce must go through a legal battle that can take up to 20 years, said lawyer Sara Irani. Even then, she said, it might end with the woman failing to dissolve the marriage.

Women are basically property. Slaves, by any other name. What a sad waste. This is why Islamic societies are failing.

Under Iran’s Islamic laws, a man is allowed to keep four wives at one time, a right not granted to women.

Even if a husband is having an affair, he can claim to have undertaken a “sigheh,” or temporary marriage. It’s a contract allowed under Iranian law that allows a man and woman to be “married” for any length of time they choose. Critics call it a form of legalized prostitution.

Nor does a wife trapped in a violent marriage have much recourse against her husband.

“A woman has to bring four men witnesses confirming violence against her by her husband,” Irani said. “How is a woman in Iran expected to keep four men in her bedroom to witness her husband beating her?”

And this relentless oppression is resulting in an unprecedented wave of husband killings. Root causes, anyone?

“During 30 years of matrimonial life, Hedayat always beat me. He was a doubter and skeptical of everything and didn’t trust me. He had made the life hell for me,” Ferdows told authorities, who have identified her only by her first name.

Ferdows paid a man the equivalent of $3,750 to stab her husband to death three years ago, prosecutors said. The crime wasn’t exposed until this February, when police found her husband’s remains in an abandoned building. She had told people her husband abandoned her.

I'm a very good man, just not a very good wizard.

oh, freakin’ neato!

how honking nifty is that?

also, the converse is true… I can link to deadjournal accounts! eesh… too big a list, mayhap. public only posts, too, because it won’t detect outside security. but now I can read slashdot and plastic from my lj… handeeeee!

here’s a breakdown of some of the uses – http://www.webreference.com/scripts/sidebar/

sweetalyssm‘s post about not having photographed lately (great manips, and a magnificent model…) reminded me that I’ve not done much with my art lately, either. I think I’m going to have to commit an hour a day to just producing some writing again… I got lazy, and fell a big chunk out of the habit. Maybe lunch hour, instead of reading.. not sure. Just programming and fooling around isn’t very productive.

Talked to the bro… he’s doing well except for him and the mother got into some sort of argument, but we may all three have dinner together tomorrow night after work. We’ll see how that takes off. I guess she brought some girl back with her from the last trip to brazil, and is letting her camp out on the couch until she can get on her feet.

Got him some ice cream and good conversation.. always a nice combo.

Is it me, or am I really seeing turquoise jewelry everywhere these days? And crochet string tops?

Also.. Amazon eez de debbil.

Books are hard enough to resist without all this other ease of use stuff! Get thee behind me, oh one-click!

That reminds me… don’t ask how…

I dreamt that my sweetheart’s cat kicked over my fridge to get at the goodies inside, and he was kind enough to share with Newt. We came home to find the appliance on its side, with the furry-boys lapping at the spilled milk within. They seemed quite proud.

Stream of thought

Of the songs I’ve heard the grim reaper sing, I like this one the best –

I’m a kitty cat
I wear a bowl of peanuts
for a hat!
If I eat them all,
I will get fat
blah blah blah, I’m a kitty cat!

my alyssum has already started peeking little baby leaves on the east side of the house! got to love this Florida weather!

Newt and I just played a quick round of bearskin rug vs. tigerskin rug. Newt won, the slacker.

I would like a slice of ice cream cake, or perhaps an ice cream sandwich. something cool, creamy and with chocolate bits… or some pocky.

I don’t think I’ve ever met someone that actively dislikes the Beatles. The only people I can imagine doing so are surly teens trying to sound anti-establishment or something.

My current discovery on internet radio – Pirates Choice – Orchestra Baobab Pretty spiffy stuff…if you like African/Cuban hybrid music sung in French. The stuff you’d have playing in the background of a spy novel set in South Miami. I dig it ok. Most of the tracks are available on Kazaa, or have a listen on the Amazon link there if you have real player.

I forgot to mention, I got a drink of Gatorade at the shell station across from the ‘mat, and they were selling little Lego race cars there for $1. Pretty nifty little toy, and a nice trinket of happiness to share with my striped roommate.

Do I have to return to work tomorrow? Did I really have 4 days off? Apparently the answer to both is “Yes, Scotto.”

I think “Scooter-pie” would be a cute nickname for me. I’ve been called “Scooter” before. speaking of which… truth in advertising!.

Note to self, call Newt’s doc tomorrow, and give change of address & phone, as well as my own.

the new 'mat

7/7/02 1:04 pm – palmtop

interesting place… fort lauderdale has more ‘beautiful people’ than pompano…more folks my age, too.

friendlies at the mat, and one or two oddballs, but no mean or scary-folk.

had a short chat with a local, and it was pleasant… nice to make a stranger smile, and I got a book reccomondation out of it. (a bio of the romanovs) I showed her piccies of my sweetie and other fun things to do on the palm, like ebooks… I should be a spokeman.

guys with shoulder-hair shouldn’t wear tank tops. nor should gals guys with shoulder-hair, for that matter.

I need to pick up ‘bed in a bag’ from wal-mart… I saw three designs that really suit me, and the price is right.

body count from my far left to far right-

1 biker couple, woman in lycra pants and top, guy with many tattoos, including web on elbow
1 pair dykes, a stereotypical bull and lipstick combo.
2 40-ish men (not together) staring at
1 cell phone chick, looked like she had major “upgrades” done to face and chest
1 sporty-guy (with shoulder-hair) chatting with
1 sporty-gal (no shoulder-hair)
1 smiling geek girl with possibly 8 loads to do (book reccomender)
3 late 20-ish guys (brothers?)
1 nuclear family (mother,father,son,daughter)
1 late 50s woman in capri pants
1 pod with a palmtop in a tie dye shirt and bermuda shorts

freaky forehead bone-looking sand dollar.it amazes me how many people thought that Newt and I have synched digestive cycles, and about the sand dollar thing.

there’s a chirpy bird outside that’s driving Newt to distraction.. he’s peering out the window as I type, trying to figure a way to get to it.

Random American history factoid – in 1585, the first English colonists arrived in Roanoke Island, Virginia. (Now North Carolina). by 1590, all of the settlers had disappeared. The word “CROATOAN” is found carved into a tree.

Talked with my sweetheart, and now we’re both off to do chores! Mmm.. she makes the day complete. šŸ™‚ Got to call the bro, and see if he needs any laundry done, while I’m at it.

until later, dear journal!

Ah… this is what I was looking for.

There it is… SUBTERRANEAN ISLAND BASE WITH OPTIONAL VOLCANO UPGRADE. set that up about 15/20 miles off the coast, and I’ll be ready. Maybe the undersea city option instead?

Chewing on Earth by David Brin right now… a big, thick paperback, I’m about 30 pages into it. It was given to me to read about two years ago, and am just getting around to it. Not as engrossing as the Uplift books yet, more of an environmental theme, so far. I think that after I finish it, I’ll be technically refreshed enough to focus on a few of the programming projects that’ve been on the back burner.

Bro’s being a swell guy today…picked up ice cream for me at 7-11… he fly, I buy. It’s too bad that he’s allergic to Newtie. They both like one another, too. Ah well… they get to say hi every now and then…the bro just can’t stay inside for too long, and has to wash his hands after giving or getting Newtie loves.

Speaking of Newt… he’s found someplace in the house to hide my hair ties. Not by the food dish, by the litter box or in it (thank goodness… bleh!)… I haven’t discovered all the nooks and crannies here yet. I know he likes to sneak behind my books on the lower shelf (it’s deep).. hopefully he’s not putting them in a cache there…. Hard to get to .
