9295 – Tuesday

Dick Martin died. Why does this make me feel bad or nostalgic? Laugh-in was old hat before I was born, but I loved seeing it on Nick at Nite.

Forgot to mention the awesome sub/pizza shop discovered on Saturday. Selby Sub Shoppe – found when we took a wrong turn looking for Thai food. Best mistake we could’ve made. Larry was especially happy that he didn’t have to consume anything involving curry or green beans. He got chicken wings, while BHK, Chris and I gobbled down some white pizza… with red sauce on the side.

So good. Also good was the lemon coconut cake, lemon pie, chocolate mousse pie and the lemon cookies. We seem to have an inordinate amount of lemon fondness in our desserts.

Random statement – I don’t think that Andy Kaufman was very funny, even in a meta-way. Entertainingly random, at best.

Current music – The Way I Am by Ingrid Michaelson

If you were falling, then I would catch you.
You need a light, I'd find a match.

'cause I love the way you say good morning.
And you take me the way I am.
If you are chilly, here take my sweater.
Your head is aching, I'll make it better.

'cause I love the way you call me baby.
And you take me the way I am.

I'd buy you Rogaine if you start losing all your hair.
Sew on patches to all you tear.

'cause I love you more than I could ever promise.
And you take me the way I am.
You take me the way I am.
You take me the way I am.

BHK got her first filling today – her personal tooth-care is far superior to mine.

Dreamt last night of being at the Disney lagoon – BHK and I were swimming with giant sharks, eels – no fish was smaller than half my size, most of them were between 30-40 feet long. At one point I was kidnapped, and was told that if I escaped, my entire family would be killed. I grabbed the person and immobilized him by snapping his arms and legs off like dried twigs – when I went to finish him, the police showed up and told me that his brain shouldn’t be damaged, as they needed it to ge tthe information on how he would hurt folks. I didn’t care to see him live, but I relented – though only if I could pack his head with salt and ash. That was ok with the police, who decapitated him, and put his noggin in a clear tube for analysis… the head was somehow still alive, but as long as he couldn’t speak, he couldn’t hurt us… some sort of vampire, or lich, maybe?

Adam is home from Haiti – note form MVW

[…]
I just wanted to say thank you for all of your prayers! Adam returned home safely this past Saturday evening. He did have his Dad take him to the Hospital late Saturday evening because he was not feeling well. He had something called “Acute Pharyngitis” but he is feeling much better now!
I finally was able to catch up with him at our friends home, Sven and Mary Thulin’s, last night. He promises to catch up with us soon and let us know some of the highlights of his trip.
A few things he did mention last night were:
Haiti has a 4% employment rate. 80% of the people are under the poverty line. 55% make less then a dollar/ day. He went to a town called Petit Goave for 3 days. They had no bathrooms to use, but only the Caribbean Sea for these 200 people. Adam’s team helped build a shelter out of tree branches and metal.
He was impressed with the local church they had in the center of the little town. He said “their faith is very strong and their worship is very intense.” One of the most important things I heard him say was that “As poor as they were, they were very content considering their situation”.
I guess, sometimes we just need to hear these things to remind ourselves of how blessed we really are.[…]

A small group in Santa Fe, New Mexico is claiming that the city is discriminating against them by having wireless networks in public buildings. How are these buildings discriminatory? Simple. These people are allergic to Wi-Fi.

.hot.0524081304.jpg.

pictures – ATW man salutes our fallen heroes, and I complain about the heat. (Not nearly as hot as it was in other locales, so I hear!)

Slept well on the new bed – I wasn’t feeling so hot earlier, but a nap helped my back and headache quite a bit. Still a little nauseated, but not too terrible.

We had the in-laws over again and made more franks and beans for dinner, and this time, the bonfire and s’mores were a reality. Added bonus was blowing bubbles.

Opted out of the new town trolley to Pete Green’s – The route is cute, and could be a lot of fun – two bits to ride can’t be beat. I wouldn’t mind just taking it for a little day-tour out and about where BHK and I can relax and take in the scenery. I suspect that the trolley’s primary use will be for drinkers getting home safe… I’m all for it if it keeps the drunkies from behind the wheel.

I want to pick up a bike – the in-laws cycled up the beach for breakfast this morning, and I thought it sounded like a fun way to ge tout of the house for a bit.

I still haven’t decided what new e-books to put on the PDA – maybe I’ll take a breather and stick to pulp-books for a bit.

0525081242.jpgLarry and I picked up the bed this morning – BHK and I napped a bit today. Feels good so far, but it is surprisingly high – maybe 6 (likely more) inches taller than the old one.

Picture, left – Larry, scrunched down a bit to magnify the “princess and the pea effect”.

Post-nap, the gang did lots of yardwork – my blueberry plant is in the ground now, as are BHK’s roses… and Chris’s tomato plants.

Closed out the day grilling hot dogs for the family – in-laws brought beans, cole slaw and buns… nice Sunny day today. We passed on the bonfire and s’mores – we were too full of dinner to move.

Instead, we watched some recorded top gear and hung out for a bit… bedtime again soon.

Current read – Gateway by Fred Pohl. Not bad thus far – got it free from the library bookmobile about a year ago… grabbed at random from queue when I realized that I’v epolished off all the ebooks on my PDA – will reload soon, but holding an actual tree-made book is nice. Funny that the paperback is older than Adam – Heck, printed in 1980 – it’s 28 years old. 1980 doesn’t seem that long ago, but I was 11 at the time.

NASA is bracing for “seven minutes of terror,” when an unmanned craft landing on Mars may wake a dormant robot army that could rise up to invade and crush our civilization… oh, wait. They’re saying the space ship might tip over. That’s all.

Spent most of the day shopping for a new couch and a new bed – found the bed we wanted at a decent price – we pick it up tomorrow, and our old bed goes to the blue house for storage. We have a new Queen Size pillow top marshmallow (but firm) – feels good at the store – can’t wait to try it at home.

Gaming in my brain –

Next game I want to pick up is Hive. (with the mosquito ) I like the insect theme and bakelite tiles a lot – I’ll have to see if Aardvark can order it for us.

Unlike the US government, Hasbro lets you print out your own Monopoly money. There are PDFs for 1,5,10,20,50,100, and 500 dollar bills.

Good for any money-handling game, really. Witch Trial comes immediately to my mind. (which uses our monopoly money more than monopoly does)

From New Scientist Tech: (or, a better use of a Newt/Pye cam?)

To try and develop a more sophisticated model, the team recorded the responses of 49 individual neurons in a part of a cat’s brain called the lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN). The LGN receives and processes visual information from the retina, via the optic nerve, before sending it on to the cerebral cortex.

The data made it possible to build a software model of the LGN that can approximate how the neurons would respond to real scenes. The model was tested against scenes recorded from a “catcam” camera attached to a cat’s head.

“We chose the catcam because it was the most natural stimulus we could think of, the closest to what a cat would see when walking around,” Matteo Carandini told New Scientist. Because the catcam footage lacked elements moving independently from the rest of the scene, the researchers also used a scene from Disney’s animated film Tarzan.

The model’s predictions proved to be 80% accurate when shown artificial scenes, but this figure fell to 60% with the natural scenes or the Tarzan movie.

The ultimate goal of the research, still years distant, is to develop an implant that uses visual data to directly stimulate the LGN of blind people whose optic nerve or retina has degenerated from lack of use.

“For these people, a prosthesis in the eye doesn’t help,” Carandini explains. Only people who have recently become blind can benefit from such implants – currently being tested in humans – that stimulate the retina or optic nerve

Work on monkeys last year showed it is possible to stimulate the LGN using electrodes to alter their vision, something previously thought impossible. Software models like that developed by Carandini and colleagues would be vital for an implant to stimulate the right neurons to create a mental impression of vision.

I think tonight is Thai night or is that tomorrow? Or did we decide to go with zucchini? Ah well, it’ll be a winner of a night, no matter what.

Had tasty leftover thai soup for lunch… maybe leftover pizza from last night for dinner? I guess I’ll know once I get home… I imagine my ride’ll be here soon! [edit: had a huge salad for dinner, and rounded it out with the remainder of the Thai soup. Pizza in box for tomorrow!]

Serious cough this morning – pollen? Faded as we left North Beach. [edit: didn’t return when I got back home – woodsmoke, perhaps?]

Watched House and Hell’s Kitchen – we’re about 3 episodes from the end on each. I can’t get over how abusive Ramsey is on that show – I’ve seen him far nicer to other folks, so I’m guessing it’s mostly an act. House wasn’t up to usual snuff… (the sopa opera star one) I guess ever season has to have the weak episode here and again.

Whenever I think of James Garner, I think of three things. (usually in this order)

1. Rockford Files
2. Maverick
3. A Chevy Tahoe Commercial he did a voiceover for:

“Nobody Knows It But Me” written by Patrick O’Leary

The words of the poem are as follows:

There’s a place that I travel
When I want to roam
And nobody knows it but me.

The roads don’t go there
And the signs stay home
And nobody knows it but me.

It’s far far away
And way way afar
It’s over the moon and the sea
And whenever you’re going
that’s wherever you are
And nobody knows it but me.

I love that poem, but if pressed, prefer the Rockford files.

Know what I like, dear journal? Quiet, that’s what I like.

So many ambient sounds in my life… traffic, coworkers, key-clicks.

Of course there’s good stuff, too, like my wife’s voice and Newt/Pye Purrs.

It seems like some sounds are just deafening, and unending. The roar and rattle of air conditioners, people talking up the road or down the hall, my own breathing.

I sometimes like it to be so quiet that I can hear my heart beating in my body.. or the tendons of my neck stetching like rubber bands when I turn my head…. the odd pop of a joint when I stand up, or just hold my arms out at my sides. The roar of the ocean when I get ready to yawn.

But I’d rather hear the annoying rabble noise and not miss my family and comforting sounds, than have perfect quiet.

Archaeologists studying a 385-year-old Spanish shipwreck off the Florida keys have found a gold combination toothpick and earwax spoon. The item was carved with a 16th-century Spanish inscription that translates roughly as “For the man who has everything.”

The heck? –

Cecil says:

… something called canine transmissible venereal tumor, a very rare example of what’s known as a parasitic cancer. Unlike most other contagious cancers such as cervical cancer in humans, CTVT isn’t spread by a virus but (as recently proved) by cancerous cells themselves. Genetic analysis suggests the tumor originated in an individual wolf or domesticated dog, probably in east Asia, between 200 and 2,500 years ago. This long-dead canid’s much-mutated cells are still alive and being passed along during coitus (or sometimes through casual contact) centuries later, making it the longest-lived mammalian cell line known. The disease is now found throughout the world, especially where there are large populations of strays. It can be treated with surgery, radiation, and chemo, but most otherwise healthy dogs recover spontaneously after several months.

Luckily for us, there are no known parasitic cancers in humans, and only two additional ones affect animals. One arose spontaneously in a laboratory hamster around 1960: it’s a reticulum-cell sarcoma that can be spread by casual contact, cannibalism (hamsters’ souls are a lot darker than you might think), and mosquito bites; the tumor grows in the larynx and eventually leads to suffocation. The other is a condition threatening Tasmanian devils with extinction in the wild, called devil facial-tumor disease. First noted in the 90s, it’s spread by bites; the tumors grow around the mouth and eventually cause death by starvation.

My livejournal account is 8 years old today.

I didn’t really get to posting daily until 8/2000, but 9284 posts in 8 years is pretty surprising to me. Something like 3 posts a day, give or take.

Some had a lot more content than others, of course.

In 8 years… a lot has happened. If you’d have told me then that I would still be doing this now, I’d probably have doubted it. The LJ community as a whole has changed hands a few times. The service has been a great boon to me.

I met my wonderful wife on livejournal…. and more than a couple of other new and delightful people from around the world in person as a result, too.

I reconnected with friends that I thought were long lost – both from gaming groups and high school.

I’ve pretty thoroughly documented my 30s here. Walkabouts, musings, dating, work – there’s not much about me that you can’t find here… some things are privatized or friends-only security, but the vast majority is open to the world. I sometimes wonder if that’s a good idea, but it’s worked well for me so far.

I tend to keep my really rough rants or personal lists (shopping for presents and reminders, mostly) to myself. I also used to archive chats here, before google talk; which automatically does it now. I’m guessing there weren’t many – maybe 20 or 30, tops.

I’m not really online much for chatties these days, but here and there you might catch me, dear journal. (Gmail checks, generally) my profile page has a list of assorted locations to look me up.

Adam’s in Haiti, doing more missionary work – he sounds all right, there were a lot of concerns for his safety. Funny that nobody raised safety issues when he went to Guatemala last year.

a bulk email he sent out –

Hey Everyone!
I am at a Hotel in Petit Goave, Haiti. The lady at the front desk let me use the Internet, so I have to be really quick.
First of all, we have been very safe the entire time. The first guest house we stayed in was in Port-au-Prince and run by Americans who have live there for 12 years. They laughed at me when I asked if there was anything to worry about, and they said that they had teams down here the entire time the riots were happening a month ago. They said that instead of returning from their work sites at 4:30, they just came back an hour later, because by 5 or so the rioters would get tired and all go home, haha. The house has an average of 13 people staying there every night of the year, it was really cool.
Now we are at a hotel in Petit Goave. It is way too nice for us! It is more like a resort, but I guess it was the safest place they could find, and that’s what matters most.
Yesterday we helped out a a track event for children which was meant to bring many schools together to inform them about HIV/AIDS. Today we went to a very poor community in the mountains to inform about the same thing, just didn’t have a track meet. We haven’t actually done any blood work or anything like that yet, so it’s been really safe. For the rest of the week we are going to be doing more events with children and some community clean-ups, etc.
I gotta run. I don’t know if I’ll be able to email again, but just know that the State Department is full of it, haha. Especially with the precautions we are taking, we are very safe. If I don’t get to email again then I’ll talk to you or see you in 7 days.
Love,
Adam
PS: Send this to anyone who might be interested in hearing my status/update, and thanks for your continued prayers. See you all soon!

glad to hear he’s aok! I suspected as much.

9280 – friday

Netforum meeting all day today. Networking, educational, etc. After a little issue that challenged my urban orienteering skills, I made it with plenty of time to spare. The place was bunker-like, no cell phone or wifi card use could escape the clutches of the building.

Learned a few little details about magnetmail, a lot of good Sharepoint / WSS & MSS stuff, met a lot of excellent contacts, and drank a lot of diet coke.

Notes for next time – don’t bother to wear a tie, bring a laptop for in person review of what’s on the screen during demos.

After work, we hit Iron Man, and it was enjoyable – probably a solid 8/8.5 out of 10 for superhero flicks. BHK liked it, even though she prefers supernatural stuff to gearhead superheroics.

9279 – Thursday – It was all a dream.

Dreamt last night that we were touring a pair of Monasteries – Tibetan style, Buddhist things. Apparently, I wasn’t too interested in the firs tone, and had to rush to the second before the bell rang – doors would lock and wild dogs tore apart anyone not inside one of the two feuding temples when the bells summoned them.

The ground between the two buildings slid and shifted… I (much more nimbly than I might’ve in waking life) leaped from stepping stone to stepping stone, avoiding too-clear water that was running thickly, like syrup. Once on the second place’s stairs, the dogs curled up and went to sleep.

The building itself was very nifty – all sorts of oddities inside, not unlike a Ripley’s. One was closed off with a curtain – a skeletal mammoth with an elephant-sized, but human shaped skull – save for a single tusk/horn curling upwards from the tip of the chin area of the mandible. I went to take a picture of it, but a guard (I don’t recall his garb – if he was a mall security type or a warrior-sort.. I just knew he worked there, wasn’t just some guy) told me that it was forbidden. He then smiled at me, took a picture with his cell phone and was promptly gored by the skeleton. The tusk tore a rip in him from crotch to throat and where he opened up, rose petals fell until the body was just an empty skin.

A different member of the monestary showed up and apologized to me – I couldn’t attend service, because the priest was shorter than me. However another fellow, taller than me would be available to walk me through services on Tuesday, at 8:30. I asked if he meant morning or night, and he laughed… “Don’t you work? – it’s at night.. it’ll be 8:30 pm to 10pm, then there’ll be snacks, bell ringing and wheel turning. Does your wife dance?”

I said that she did, though we really have never been.

I’ve never been to a Tibetan monastery… now, I suspect that I’ll be a bit disappointed.

After telling her about it, BHK says that I’ll never get hot dogs grilled with onions and green peppers for dinner again. I hope that’s not the case.

Gorilla mask-wearing robber demands money, pants.

Police believe they have arrested the man who, wearing a gorilla mask, robbed a 62-year-old woman at gunpoint Monday night and later ordered another man to hand over his pants.

The woman was getting into her car at the 3035 Hamilton Church Road Wal-Mart at 10:15 p.m. when the masked gunman appeared. He pulled the car door open and tried to wrestle away her purse, police said. She fought back and kicked her assailant.

He, along with an accomplice, then got into a maroon Pontiac SUV and fled.

Less than an hour later, two 27-year-old men were walking back to their apartment from a Bell Road convenience store when a Pontiac SUV pulled up beside them. A gunman wearing a gorilla mask got out and demanded not only money, but the black cargo pants worn by one of the men.

The pair gave them money and the pants, and the gunman got back into the Pontiac and fled, police said.

At midnight, Officer Shaun Hardin spotted a maroon Pontiac Aztec and stopped it on Haywood Lane near Faulker Drive. The driver, Adrian Cornelius Alexander, 23, of Highland Ridge Drive in LaVergne, did not have a valid license and was taken into custody, police said. In the vehicle, police found a gorilla mask, bandanas, two bullets, several pairs of latex gloves and the black cargo pants belonging to one of the Bell Road robbery victims.

The victims identified Alexander as the robber, police said. He, along with his passenger Antwan Haynes, 18, of LaVergne, have been charged with two counts of aggravated robbery, police said.

Charges for the Wal-Mart attack are expected to be placed in the next two days, police said.

I just noticed that it’s the anniversary of my father’s death. It was ages ago… I miss him, now that I think about it, but I haven’t really had him in my thoughts much in recent times. I wonder why… I wouldn’t have realized if I hadn’t seen the archives, at least not until I saw 5/15 on my calendar at work, I guess.

9278 – Wednesday – the letter o appears in this entry.

Everyone on the bus was wearing blue this morning. No reds, golds or oranges… blue, with black or white, in varying shades.

Except me. I had a pair of tan/brown pants, brown shoes, white shirt with a smattering of black, gray, and reddish brown stripes.

Half of me wondered if I got on the right vehicle; the other half wondered why I didn’t get the memo.

I don’t mind – I come home to a colorful crew with BHK at the helm.

It seems that Pye prefers Newtcam, and newt prefers to be on Pyecam. (Newt likes the little window ledge upstairs…Pye likes the bed upstairs. They both seem to duel over the office and living room windows.

Off to Arlington, VA (right near Ballston) for a NetForum Users Group meeting on Friday – pretty much all day long. I wonder if there’s anything BHK and I would like to do in that environment, after the meeting is over? I figure I’ll head home, unless we need to stop off at the Pentagon for something – which I doubt.

This weekend plans include (in varying degrees of probability, but all of them nifty):

Aardvark
Em’s ballet recital
Artomatic

Those that aren’t hit this weekend, will be hit in the future, to be sure.

The Comic Book Script Archive … interesting list of scripts from a ton of authors… From the Moore’s intro to the Killing Joke script: ‘I want you to feel as comfortable and unrestricted as possible during the several months of your bitterly brief mortal lifespan that you’ll spend working on this job, so just lay back and mellow out. Take your shoes and socks off. Fiddle around in between your toes. Nobody cares.’

BHK made delicious pea soup! The perfect thing after a long day at work. Nomnommy. We supped over Ugly betty and the new TV Show King trivia game for the wii. WorldWide Telescope, developed by Microsoft’s research arm, knits together images from the Hubble Space Telescope, the Chandra X-Ray Observatory Center, the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, and others. Windows users (only) can browse through the galaxy on their own or take guided tours of different outer-space destinations developed by astronomers and academics. The application allows viewing from different wavelengths such as X-ray, visible light, and hydrogen-alpha radiation. Business Week has a review and some background on the project, which has been in development for years. Google Sky beat them to the punch but Business Week opines that WWT’s interface is superior.

Albert Einstein’s True Religious Beliefs Revealed

(
he rejects it as “childish superstition,” but also disliked the hubris of atheism)

In the letter, he states: “The word god is for me nothing more than the expression and product of human weaknesses, the Bible a collection of honourable, but still primitive legends which are nevertheless pretty childish. No interpretation no matter how subtle can (for me) change this.”

I’m really digging the combination of Pyecam and Newtcam. I just have to update my internal pages with Pye-links now. The cams are really mis-named, since either of the boys can land on either cam… the Newtcam is more permanently affixed in the sunny office, while Pyecam is on the more mobile, but less frequently live laptop

Newt seems to be the most interested in playing in front of the cams… Pye prefers the living room, I suspect.

I’ve upped the resolution on both… I’m also considering making one or both live streaming video.

9276 – bloody, floody monday.

Power went out last night at about midnight or thereabouts… my CPAP shut down, so I had a lovely night of snoring over poor BHK’s shoulder.

Showered and shaved in the rainy dawn-dark this morning – fortunately, I had a company polo shirt to wear, since the iron doesn’t work sans juice, either.

I wonder how the Old Order Amish feel when they hear that the “English” (non-Amish) are fretting about not having any electricity?

Worse than the lack of power was the severe flooding and high winds.

Statement as of 6:39 AM EDT on May 12, 2008

… Flood Watch remains in effect until 2 PM EDT this afternoon…

* expect moderate to heavy rain to continue through the early
morning hours. Rain will taper off from the southwest to
northeast in the afternoon. An additional one to two inches of
rain is possible.

* The heavy rain will cause streams and creeks to overflow their
banks. Also… urban areas prone to poor drainage will be
susceptible to flooding. As the water works its way into the
rivers… river flooding will be possible in the upper Potomac
and Shenandoah basins.

Now – power is back on at the house, and no more flood warning for Calvert County.

After work, went to the back doctor – much more fruitful response this time. getting my epidural, physical therapy and etc… hopefully a bit more productive than “no hope blah blah” from last one. I get my epi in about a week, a flexion exercise program, ultrasound, electrical stim, and massage.

Saw Aardvark’s Tara in her other work duds at Panera… she cleans up well! BHK and she gabbed a bit – the 2nd store is now closed primarily due to crooked employees making off with merch. Upside, that’s more time for them to be social.. maybe we’ll hang with them sometime soon! The Lusby store rocks the party that much more, too.

Ah, Virginia. You never let me down with the custom plates.

No relation to the flooding post, prior.

Two books for me to investigate library-wise. We saw ’em at the bookstore last week, and I think they’ll be better as temporary reads rather than permanent additions to our collection. I may change my mind after reading ’em.
