First time using mass transit to get *to* work. Not bad, but it seems harder to arrive than it is to depart, contrary to the toilet roll hypothesis. Rode in to the station with mom-in-law, and aside from the lack of knee room in some of the seats, I’ve got no gripes. It means getting up a little bit earlier, but I think that this will save us a ton of wear on the love cube and even more fuel. Total round-trip cost for a day is under $10. (just). Of course, my trip home threatened to rain on me at the bus stop – only one place I have to wait under cover is right as I leave the office. I think that if I leave about 10 minutes earlier, I can get into the office about 30 minutes quicker. We’ll see.

BHK made Louise an awesome birthday cake… 4 layers! (see above – Neopolitain style, vanilla, chocolate and strawberry – with a milk chocolate frosting.) also barely-seen are some cupcakes spelling out her name, too. (I took the S cupcake to work today. 🙂 ) The cake is more of a silo than a disc, but that’s aok with me. Initially, it was to be a ckae for both Doug and Louise, but Doug broke it off with TM – moved out of the townhouse, and gathered up his belongings. I hope it’s what is best for the both of ’em… they’re both pretty nice folks from what I’ve seen. I imagine he’s back on the base now, and will be going back overseas shortly. Kind of a bummer way to enjoy leave. Louise, however made out like a bandit. We got her a nice purse, TM got her some really pretty earrings, and the inlaws hooked her up with outback gift certs. I’m not sure what will become of Doug’s presents… I imagine they’ll be recycled or reprocessed. (I suspect father-in-law is going to get a Bass Pro shops gift card fairly soon for his B-day in August, and Adam may reap the TM rewards.)

via boingboing – The OpenMoko is a $300, Linux-based open smartphone. Unlike the iPhone, it doesn’t come locked to any provider (and certainly not to the crooks at AT&T), it doesn’t come with DRM, and it allows you to install any third party app you like, even if Steve Jobs worries that it might spoil your experience. It’s still in “developer preview,” but this might just be my next phone. The current version of the Neo1973 has built-in GPS too, and the mass-market unit that will ship in October will have wifi and accelerated graphics.

The Neo 1973 boasts the following hardware specifications

* 2.8″ VGA TFT color display
* Touchscreen, usable with stylus or fingers
* 266MHz Samsung System on a Chip (SOC)
* USB 1.1, switchable between Client and Host (unpowered)
* Integrated AGPS
* 2.5G GSM – quad band, voice, CSD, GPRS
* Bluetooth 2.0
* Micro SD slot
* High Quality audio codec

Had a lovely Birthday yesterday. BHK had a party for me, and we had a goodly sized gang over… Cathy, Tina, The In-Laws, Jimmy, and Adam for Baked Ziti, lemon cupcakes (with raspberries), yellow b’day cake with chocolate frosting, maple cookies, mint oreos, all manner of mixed nuts and veggies for snacking. Oh, and M&M’s.

We had a nice time… chitty chattiing while the teens played Destroy all humans and SSX Tricky. Newt and Pye were polite little boys, too…social but not beggars or meanies. We caught up on some TiVo’d stuff when the tube wasn’t monopolized by any other activity.

EM and Buga wished me a voice mail happy b’day in the early AM, and Emily called back later and sang Happy B’day to me quite nicely.

I hope my wish comes true on the blown-out candles… Adam buttered my nose *again* (in addition to BHK’s two hits) right after extinguishing them. I really don’t have any demands, just requests… I really have more than I could possibly have hoped for already.

Loot breakdown – Quite a nice haul for the b’day!

Rec’d (in no particular order): –

  • ~$400 in checks and cash (Momster and In-Laws), plus $50 target card [maybe to put to a Wii?] (Tina), $25 Friday’s card (Cathy)
  • A great guide to Chesapeake Bay wildlife and terrain, & a Plastic Otter, a birthday party with cake and good friends, pancakes and omelet for breakfast and a ton of cleanup / prep (BHK)
  • A Glass Paperweight blown to look like a Jellyfish – must be seen to really be appreciated. (In-laws)
  • Ceramic Tile of Frog & Child – (Danny)
  • PS2 Loaner w/ grand theft auto, spy2 and a car race game (Jimmy)
  • Many lovely lj and e-wishes, a few very nice paper cards.

Use the first letter of your first name and fill out the following. Its harder than you think.

More lovely pics received for my bday!

I didn’t see my shadow this morning. No more cold?

Well, I got my Nose buttered twice by BHK already – (In a few places around the world, the traditional birthday trick is what is often known as ‘grease face.’ The same custom is known in parts of the Maritime provinces of Canada as ‘buttered noses.’ As early as is convenient on the birthday someone tries to reach from behind the birthday boy or girl and dab on their nose a fingerful of grease, often butter. This is accompanied by best wishes for the year, now lubricated with the greasy face. Among schoolchildren this custom sometimes takes the form of pushing a sweet, creamy cake in the face) (See also BHK’s entry from about 6 years or so ago)

Also, my morning was brought to a lovely start with blueberry pancakes and a cheese omelet for b’day breakfast. YUM!

Candlemas Day (February 2nd) is known as “La fête de la chandeleur” among the francophones of the West Coast and is celebrated with a beribboned bachelor King visiting houses of eligible young women. Elsewhere in the province it is known as a day to watch for bears’ shadows in order to predict the weather. Candlemas Day is the same date as the American Groundhog Day but retains the old Christian calendar name, which derives from the tradition of blessing the annual supply of church candles on that day, the official end of the liturgical Christmas season. In older European traditions, bears step outside their hibernation caves to check the weather on February 2nd. If it is fine they will stay out for the remainder of the season. In Newfoundland this belief has remained more or less intact in the rhyme “If Candlemas Day be clear and fine, the rest of winter is left behind; If Candlemas Day be rough and grum, there’s more of winter left to come” (cf. Hiscock 1996:35).

It took the better part of the day, but the commode is finished. Before starting, we had a big pancake breakfast, courtesy of BHK – Chris and BHK went shopping while Larry & I worked on the plumbing… timing was good… we finished about 15 minutes before they called to let us know that they were heading back, and we ended the day with Chinese food, and watching Men In Black.

Got a nice call from Danny, too – his wife is in Bangladesh, reviewing a clothing place’s quality control. I wonder what the quality of life is of the workers there.

Birthday is on Friday – Still not sure what, if anything will be happening for it. I suspect a quiet get-together with some family & friends… I’d like to see as much of the local gang make it if they can, but Friday night has got to be a tricky one, especially if it’s short notice. Given the current financial limits, I suspect the Wii will be a rain check item.

Happy Birthday, kat78731! (and one year of journaling, too!)

Moved some loot over to the brown house, and did a bit of cleaning there, got a nibble from ned.org for a possible gig – we’ll see how that goes.

Saw “Dead and Breakfast” … Interesting to see Oz Perkins, but it didn’t jingle my bells so much. The commentary was more interesting than the movie itself… sounds like they had a good time making it.

What Fantasy Archetype Are you?

The Seasoned Veteran Friend
You are the Seasoned Veteran Friend! You resemble Aragorn (Lord of The Rings), Merlin (Arthurian Legend), Han Solo (Star Wars), The Marquis (Neverwhere), Sirius Black (Harry Potter) and Chase (Wizard’s First Rule). You are exceedingly loyal, tricky and hardy. You regularly pull the Unlikely Hero, Mentor and Pillor-of-Strength Love Interest out of trouble and into safety. Beware The Traitor, who will make your job intensely difficult. And don’t coddle the Unlikely Hero too much, he has to learn how to fend for himself. Anyway, everyone admires you and your resourcefulness / reliability – good going!

Happy Birthday, graypumpkin!
monkeybday

I didn’t get to hit ¡Viva Broward! yesterday… I ran out of time. Today, however is a new day… I think I’ll trundle down there for a midday bit of entertainment.

Got a mild interrogation from someone at the pool on the way back from grocery shopping yesterday. I was toting a double armload of groceries, heading to my place; when a guy at the pool area calls over to me.

Guy:”Hey, you!”
Me:”Hi! Can I help you?”
G:”Do you live here?”
M:”Yup!”
G:”Which unit?”
(*note* – at no time did he ask my name, or say anything in a non-interrogatory style. )
M:”323D… can I help you?”
G:”No, I just wanted to know.”
(*note* – Did he think I was a hoodlum of some sort? That I was going to use packages of peanut butter crackers, deodorant, light bulbs, and a half-dozen liters of Diet Doctor Pepper to do some crazy MacGuyver evil on the complex?)
M:”Oh. What unit do you live in?”
G:”304A”
M:”Nice place. Have a good one.”
And I walked away.
He didn’t reply.

Wacky.

I didn’t look shabby or anything… wearing a nice clean Hawaiian style golf shirt, short hair, clean shaved, maybe perspiring a bit, due to toting the barge.

I figure I can look him up in the condo directory later… I’ll get the lowdown from Jesus-bread lady and/or the Condo Superhero sometime today, I’m sure.

What would happen if everyone on Earth suddenly vanished without a trace? Although that’s totally impossible, of course, a new article speculates on how long it would take for all traces of today’s human civilization to be reclaimed by the earth’s natural processes.

Moment of Lyric – mp3 (Via X-entertainment’s great halloween jukebox)

In the afterlife
You could be headed for the serious strife
Now you make the scene all day
But tomorrow there’ll be hell to pay

People listen attentively
I mean about future calamity
I used to think the idea was obsolete
Until I heard the old man stamping his feet.

This is a place where eternally
Fire is applied to the body
Teeth are extruded and bones are ground
Then baked into cakes which are passed around.

Beauty, talent, fame, money, refinement
Top skill and brain
But all the things you try to hide
Will be revealed on the other side.

Now the d and the a and the m
And the n and the a
And the t and the i-o-n
Lose your face, lose your name
Then get fitted for a suit of flame

8587 – Newt is Seven today!

Happy Bornday Newtie! Feel free to peek in on him and say howdy!

Free rides on tri-rail today notification was a bit late, and on a poorly chosen day… but why look a gift ticket in the mouth?

Just go to Tri-Rail’s Website at www.tri-rail.com, then print out a voucher that will let you ride the commuter train anywhere between Miami and West Palm Beach for free all day today, Thursday, Oct. 5, 2006.

The giveaway is designed to mark national Communities in Motion Day, an annual promotion mounted by the American Public Transportation Association to promote the use of mass transit and to educate the public about its benefits.

Watched Ultimate Avengers wasn’t too bad, but I really prefer JLU. I never did see season 5, and I’m pretty impressed! Deadman episode, Warlord Episode, redone Carter Hall, Legion of Doom, a Flash Rogues Gallery episode… pretty nice way to exit with a bang.

Most enlightening quote overheard yesterday – “libertarians — people who think roads just happen”

Of course, that’s a bottled way of saying what Brooke Shelbey Biggs says… “Libertarianism is uninformed capitalist greed in civil-rights clothing” and that there are “a few issues libertarians tend to ignore when talking about the promise of a future without government interference: inherent cultural disadvantage and affirmative action; public-works projects like freeways for all those new-money Jags around Silicon Valley; funding for the arts; child-abuse prevention and intervention; medical care for the elderly; and too many more to list”.

A lot of criticism… especially since I go along with the basic premise of “be nice, let people do what they want for the most part, as long as they don’t hurt someone else that doesn’t want to be hurt.”

Feeling the beginnings of a case of bronchitis, I think. Coughing is getting worse, as is muscle soreness and increased tiredness – possibly a minor fever, too? CC at work sighed, tsked or clucked with maximum histrionics every time I cough, which makes me laugh… and made me cough a bit more as a result. I had a pretty bad jag at about 10pm last night, so I’m heading to the doctor if I can get in this morning.

Nice time out with mental_circles and an assortment of other lj-folks – Was surprised to see grrwoo there (I hadn’t seen him since ldy last in town, a couple of years ago), not as surprised to see sammystudio, and met some keen new folks in newbabel (Frank), _chandra (Chandra), home_grown_cl (Carol Lynn) and hedache (Baruk). Light convo and dumb jokes abounded over at the kids side of the table, good cheer was had by all – surprisingly little drama considering the diversity of lj-folks. A guitarist playing 70’s hits was faint but pleasant background noise. There were three tardy arrivals, whose names are eluding me now, in the haze of the morning light. They were cool, too, but on the other side of the table’s horizon, so regular convo with them was more difficult. Anyhow, I had a nice time at the “kids table”. Tina’s haircut is much cuter in person.

I’ll post pics later on, when I can be bothered to get up and go to the other room to get the camera. [edit:added.]

Bangs! Thank you, Eryx_uk, for the Axis and Allies Starter set! What a great b’day prezzie! It looked like the postman was playing football with the USPS box, but the contents inside made it without a hitch! Most awesome. I bet Danny’ll have a good time playing counter to me, as well. I’m officially part of 40 faces now, too!

Had a nice day so far, slept in, played with Newt, rode the bike downtown and got my homestead, voter’s registration, and ID all straightened out for the new address. I think I’m pretty much done transferring stuff to the new place, now. The new Florida state ID cards are pretty, and apparently I straighten out to 6’6″ on the wall height chart.

Danny’s getting sick, so probably no get-together tomorrow. Poor guy sounds more disappointed than I am that he’ll have to use his sick day actually being sick. My Plan B? Probably go to the spa and get a sports massage and try to get some jacuzzi-time in.

8110 – Birthday Prezzie, Batgirls and stuff

Geotarget
Thank you, dear Shoo! My birthday present got here early, but I was good and didn’t unwrap the gift paper unless she said I could.

And she did. I got the 2-disc Special Edition of King Kong (1933)! Yay!

Much love to all the family Shoo in Shoo-ville! Newt also likes the box quite a lot, too. He’s currently sitting inside, gnawing on a cardboard flap.

Took a lovely late night swim in the pool at about 2am. The water was warmer than the air, which is always nice. I had a brief moment of iguana-fear, which quickly passed after I gave a quick sweep of the area. Very soothing to float on my back, staring at the moon and just thinking and feeling my toes and fingertips wrinkle up a little. Water is still the closest thing to hitting a reduced gravity environment for me… quite peaceful and I could feel a lot of physical tension flow away from my back, legs and shoulders. I was shivering a bit, despite the warm water, and I don’t know what that was…maybe the body unkinking? I may make a habit of nighttime soaks more often.

Hey, look at all the batgirls!

A gazillion of ’em!

Some new designs, some just different styles on the old stuff… pretty nifty lj meme. Some amazingly amateurish, others frighteningly professional.

Take me off the shelf and put me in a plastic bag, because I’m sold!

VS and KTM both submitted resignations this week.. that’s pretty much the entire community relations department. They’ll both be gone before my birthday. I hate to sound greedy, but I really hope this won’t affect my making a long weekend out of Feb 2-5 next month. I wonder how long RR has left before he high-tails it, too?
