today’s drama.

Kev, Sappho and I sat together in Kev’s office, enjoying a little bull session and lunch. We’re all talking about New Orleans history / Civil War stuff and in walks the Finn. She’s not interested in what we’re talking about (primarily because it’s not about her, natch) and so butts into the middle of our conversation, to make a show of this new CD she bought today. I’m polite enough to look at the cover while she goes through the liner notes. On the inside, there’s a picture of the periodic table of the elements, which spawns a new conversation, science related…(not Finn related) so she starts to get huffy and puffy. She then asks to play a certain song. Sure, ok. We put the CD in and listen for about 20 seconds, and then resume our conversation about whatever we were talking about before… helium-argon lasers or something. My lunchtime was up, so I head back to my desk, after saying my goodbyes, and commenting on the tasty lunch. Four minutes later, I hear a door slam from the vicinity of Kev’s office. Finn walks to my desk, and says (pretty calmly) “No reviews? Not even a ‘This sucks, Marjo.’” My reply was “Nah, I didn’t hate it, but I didn’t love it, either. I’ll give it a straight 5 out of 10. It’s not why I left the office.” She nods, and adjourns to her own office. I return to Kev’s place to get the rest of the skinny, and apparently she pitched a hissy-fit…When nobody gave so much as a critique of the song and instead talked about other, more interesting things, she exclaimed “Well, obviously you guys hate my music!” and left, slamming the door behind her. Sappho made the comment that the maturity levels run really high around here. (Ref: also the Chupacabra/Go Away incident).

I do know that Erica contacted our parent company, and issued formal complaints regarding the Finn’s unproductive, unprofessional behavior. I’ve got to make a point of writing a nice letter to the higher-ups too, reinforcing those statements. (Along with those dealing with Chupa and the Fruit Cup.)

Nice Things – Today Kev got a sea-monkey like critter farm for his birthday- Triops… sort of like a hybrid sea monkey / horseshoe crab. They seem to get larger than monkeys, too. Maybe I’ll give them a shot when my current colony dies off…I wonder if they can cohabitate?

loud

loud guy by my window #2…I think I scared him. I walked over to his car, and he was digging the music, bobbing his head to some urban bass junk…. He didn’t see me until I knocked on his car window. I told him that he’s parked next to my apartment, and that I’d appreciate some consideration. He said no problem, and drove away. All I wanted was the radio at a neighborly level. If your windows are up, I don’t need to be able to hear it in my house, thooming.

Dunceworthy folks at work. I’m beginning to get sick of the whole HR group… I’m trying to adjust aflac on of my insurance for about four months now. Finn tells me that a representative will be at work tomorrow….and I can get things taken care of, then. Great! I ask why *she* can’t do it, as she has all the information re:what I want done and so no.. and has been working on getting it taken care of since day one (har-dee-har-har) and she tells me it’s not really an HR issue. Insurance isn’t HR? Hm. Fooled me. Why’s she been “working on it” for the last quarter, then? She’s not winning any prizes in efficiency, work ethic, or charm. Ah well… she has to live with everyone at the company actively hating her (save for Kev and Paul…and she’s burning those bridges, too…) I now know that if I want anything remotely HR related done that I’ll have to do it myself, either by going over her head, or cutting in on her power from the side. So be it.

Chupa is becoming problematic again… wants all of the power, but none of the responsibility that goes with her department… Since Lourdes is out for an operation, someone has to open the mail shop at 5:30/6:00 am… really her part of that department, so she has to get up an hour earlier (she arrives at work at about 6:30 now.) to let people in. She claims that this is unacceptable, and that “Somebody better take care of it.” to which the board replied.. “You take care of it… it’s your department. If you can’t, or won’t let the people in… find someone you trust, and have them do it. if you don’t trust anyone, tough beans. Nobody’s waiting for you in the parking lot for an hour again. If the job doesn’t go out, it’s your head.

Sappho’s ankle is mending nicely…she’s off her crutches, and taking things gingerly.

More hubbub brewing at work… it looks like one of the Mail shop guys is going to be suspended for a day or two for mouthing off to Chupa…I don’t think that he deserves it… she butted in where she doesn’t belong, and got told to buzz off. No cursing, just told her to “Go away”. She claims that she went home and had a panic attack. Man… she’s in the wrong business if someone telling her to take a hike is going to stress her out that much. I saw the tape… not worth her losing any sleep over.

Newt’s very talkative tonight.. I wonder what’s gotten into him? I suspect that the loud music guy may’ve been there for a while.

grand theft, lies, vandalism, and Newton’s sonic boom. (to be ceaned up later, just get it out there

Danger the turtle, totally unrelated to the story at handAn eventful couple of days…I’ll work my way through it.

Thursday night, [gleaned via the video camera archives] : one of the bonbon spawn, her eldest, got a phone call…about 7:30 pm. While on the phone, he walks around the back of one of the primary machines, nodding his head, and observing where items are plugged into the back. For the next 15 minutes or so he walks back and forth, periodically looking right into the camera… a nervous look on his face. After his mom left, at about 8pm, we see him come out the side door and then hear the rear door open up a few moments later. A box is placed over the camera to black out anything from being seen. (Ooh… clever! I wonder what secret agent broke in and did that while he was out on a “smoke break”?) Anyhoo, “someone” then smacked the camera, and knocked it, supposedly aiming it up… what he didn’t realize is that the whole laser room was still in the field of vision… there was just less floor, and more roof. Something else that he didn’t know was that two minutes or less after pulling out the hardware key, all production on that machine ground to a stop, as the data was dammed up, forbidden to pass from servers to the Xerox printers. He calls tech support, and they walk him through a checklist of repair possibilities… but he doesn’t work with the computer at all, because he full well knows what caused the problem. He clocks out and goes home, since the machine will have to have Xerox come in and diagnose the “problem”. [End camera 1]

Cut to Friday morning, 6am, Xerox techs come in to evaluate the problem. It takes less than a minute to discover that the dongle is missing, and exactly *when* it was pulled out last night. The only two people working that evening; both of the bonbon spawn. Older “Thief” brother, and younger “Accomplice” brother. By checking the alarm and camera logs on all the doors and possible entrances.. Nobody came or went that wasn’t a child of Bonnie’s. 8:30 am, when the board members tart to arrive, they look at the security tapes and security logs mentioned above. The police were called, and Bonnie and her children were telephoned, and asked to come in. Morty, one of our guys that work in the computer bank in the front with Riker has a big mouth, called and told Bonnie what was up, soon afterwards.

10am, they all arrive, and Thief is pale white, and has the hardware key with him. He returns it, and says “no harm, no foul, right?”

Wrong. That piece of hardware comes with a $15,000 licensing fee. Taking it is grand theft. A felony good for about 15 years in the state of Florida. He also cost us printer and click time from 8pm to 6am during prime printing hours, unknown costs in paying people overtime, Xerox service, and catch-up .The police grilled The three of them almost all day yesterday. Aside from theft, there’s also a vandalism charge.

The Accomplice came through, totally straight with what he knew. I do believe that he had no idea something of that magnitude was going on.

Thief went through a couple of stories. “The system went down, and it was hanging off loosely. I pulled it off to look at it, and accidentally put it in my jeans and took it home. I returned it.. No harm done, right?” *BUZZ* wrong answer! The system didn’t go down until it was yanked out. It doesn’t hang loosely; it’s screwed in with a pair of thumb-bolts. Try again… let’s go to the videotape. And why exactly did you cover the camera up? Uh, I was just goofing around… I didn’t think anything would happen. “Goofing around, by covering up a security camera, and taking hardware off the system, causing it to crash? Sounds like a laugh riot.

He has a wife and a child at home. What kind of idiot throws away his life for swiping a piece of hardware worth $15k?

Right now, it’s unknown if accomplice and bonbon will have jobs on Monday. That has to go before the board. Thief is certainly going to be fired. The board is going to decide about pressing charges. I suspect that if he comes through with who called him, and told him to swipe that part, they’ll make a deal with him to catch either Big Bird or Ex-boss in a bigger suit. (Remember, Big bird is already in trouble for stealing a $4000 piece of equipment, and selling it to ex boss.).

If the big guys can get nailed, I don’t think they’ll have a problem with letting the thief off with just being fired, instead of going off to jail to be anally taken regularly by his cellmate.

We’ll see what Monday brings. Friday night, I tucked in early, worn out from all the Police hubbub and all the noise.
trip to the vet 09/14/02 - Newt got spooked by a dog barking at him, and he rowr'd so loudly that the dog ran away.
This morning, I took Newt to the Vet for his 6 month bordatello immunization and fecal test. I was smart, and went tootsie-roll collecting, and tossed it into a Ziploc bag for them to investigate, so he didn’t need the lubricated bubble wand stuck in his bung. That’s one less stress to add to his list. The immunization consisted of a few drops put in his nose, rather than a shot….he didn’t mind that too much, but wasn’t fond of the vet rubbing his belly and bod for unusual lumps or tumors. (He’s looking good!) His weight is the same as it was six months ago, which is good.. Not getting too fat or too thin.

While standing in the front room, waiting for my ride, Newt in my arms, as sweet as can be…. in comes a guy with a mid-sized cocker spaniel. The thing is a spaz, and starts baking at Newt, loudly and excitedly, jumping about mid-waist height to me. The owner, an older lady was having trouble… she panicked a bit, probably because I told her to reel in her dog rather sharply but quietly. Newt puffs up in my arms, tail straight up and looking like it was electrified, and let out the loudest *RAWRAWRAUUUUUUUUUUUU* at the dog that I’ve ever heard. The dog whined sharply, tossed his tail between his legs and hid behind his owner, and began to cry like he’d been beaten with a two by four… The lady took him to a back room shortly thereafter. Dumb-bully dog. Newt continued to growl lowly until our ride arrived, a few minutes later.

A soon as we got outside the office, Newt relaxed, and got extra comfy in my arms for the ride home. Who knew he could get so fierce? Lesson… I’m quite confident that he could hold his own in a fight, or at least a chest-beating match.

After arriving home, I spent much time playing with the little banshee (who hasn’t so much as given a “mer?” since) on the bed, and he seems perfectly calm and collected.

notes : picture of Danger the turtle was drawn last night… Newt-attack mer was drawn today during laundry.

update- it’s over already – http://www.livejournal.com/talkread.bml?journal=ana&itemid=890241

Latest bit of LJ-hubbub ana is suffering as a result of this clause.. see her take on it here. The italics are mine.

Now, I imagine this is to somehow legally protect LJ from being accountable if a transaction between two people via the ad, both coming and going… and is *very* reasonable to keep people from spamming in the comments section of your journal, or community. I’m confident that it’ll be ironed out via brad and the gang…and that this’ll be a very minor bit of hubbub.

But if it isn’t… let’s extrapolate for a moment.

Take i for example (who first pointed this situation out to ldy, and who passed it on to me) he sells paintings here and there by showing them inside his journal. Why shouldn’t he? He’s making a buck, and not spamming other people…. from what I’ve seen, very many folks have been quite pleased with his talent and service. Why stop him from talking about his art in his journal, or linking to his site… or even making a sale? They have the blurb in place, in case someone does complain… is “We’re not responsible… he was violating terms of service” a safe enough legal defense?

How about me? I link to websites *all the frickin’ time*. That Crash Bonsai site sells stuff… will I get in trouble for “advertising” something that I think is cool?

Overall, though, my gut feeling that it’s a “tempest in a teapot”… and that the whole shebang will blow over in less than a week.

Finn pissed off Kev today. Dumb dumb dumb. He’s her only strong supporter….burning bridges, she is. Fury is short, memories are long.

Tomorrow is going to be a busy day…. Cyndi lauper and the bookstore in the morning, art fair in the afternoon, and hanging out with Dave at night…. keeping him company while his wife and her pals have a girls’ night out. I’m glad it’s a long weekend ahead, so I have time to do some resting up afterwards… I want to spend some nice quality time with my sweetheart, too, on Sunday or Monday… (or both! 🙂 )

Neat… photos from an area near my town.… small world, LJ!

My brother said that someone came by my house today when I wasn’t home… no note on the door.. I wonder if Mio accepted a package for me? I’ll find out tomorrow, I guess.

I got my computer desk home tonight, so I’ll assemble that sometime this weekend… maybe tonight?

Heeeeeeere I come to save the dayyyyyy…. (again)….

another “emergency”. Heck, I know that I’m earning my keep, anyhow.

Dale called in with a migraine, and Kev’s not in to work yet, so they’re coming so I can get there early. Early being between 45 and 30 minutes ahead of schedule.

Dingalings…it’s not like we traffic in organs or anything that’s *THAT* time-sensitive. I don’t mind, though… free ride to work and I’ll bug out a half-hour or so early today. Hopefully that’ll translate into a half-hour more time with my sweetie before tucking her in… I suspect she’s going to be sleepy after her busy day today.

See you later, dear journal!

Cheated a bit on my morning bike ride. I rode up to Denny’s for some potato pancakes, applesauce and orange juice. Much cheaper than my old stomping grounds of IHOP or the groves… quality of the potato pancakes was higher, the OJ, lower. Suffice to say that it was tasty and probably outstripped any calories burned off by cycling. It was a pretty morning, cloudy with a slight breeze… early enough that the temperature was reasonable…(I’d guess low 80s).

Speaking of the groves, it looks like it’s been part of a scandal, with the Mayor. Hmm… well, I’m not in Pompano anymore. A complete list of the Mayor’s “Political Mess” articles.

Enough of that, time for a morning haiku.

Newt had some kibble.

Roman Clothing. “…The toga was the national garment of Rome; in the Aeneid, Virgil has the god Jupiter characterize the Romans as ‘masters of the earth, the race that wears the toga’ (1.282). Only male citizens were allowed to wear the toga. It was made of a large woolen cloth cut with both straight and rounded edges; it was not sewn or pinned but rather draped carefully over the body on top of the tunic. Over time, the size and manner of draping the toga became more elaborate.”

Speaking of Rome…

pollex (POL-eks) noun, plural pollices

The thumb.

[From Latin.]

Hallux is the equivalent term for the big toe.

I wonder if it’s related to Pollux?… Heck, is Castor related to Castration? (He was the god of horsemanship)

I’ve been getting some spam at my LiveJournal email address, lately. My filters pick it up, and cast it off, but I’ve just noticed that the folder has been getting chubby faster, lately.

b-boy is doing better… I’m glad.

I’m fresh off the phone with Dave. He’s got some sort of Mac Virus that’s changing all of this data to Pc format, or some such. I really couldn’t help him out too much… he’s using os 9ish, and my strengths are really on Unix & Windows type machines.

First rule of business… *back up your data files regularly*.

I think that he’ll be ok, but has a few hours of fix-up ahead of him…. no envy here.

I’m glad that B-boy is doing well…I was concerned about his health… speaking of which, my brother’s getting better, but slowly. He’s been cutting back on the smokes… one pack every three days, rather than a pack a day… I hope that he can shave it down to removing it.

Looks like he’s kicking his roommate out… something like the fourth month in a row he couldn’t pull his side of the rent. (The roomie can go live with his mom, until he gets his act together). I agree with the bro’s decision… the roomie’s not landing in the street.

I’m not looking forward to the anniversary of Sept 11… I fear it’ll be a big political bit of noise. I know that I had enough trouble the first time around.

I forgot to mention earlier that at the toy store, aside from the recorder, I picked up a little 25mm scale play set with a police station, fire station, parking garage, a few civilians to go with the police and firemen, a fountain with a horse stature in the middle, a couple of trees, assorted vehicles including a paddy wagon, helicopter, fire engine, and a little train engine and tanker car. Cheap for $10. (Marked down from $15) Newton had a field day with all the twist-ties that came with… and likes to sit inside the fresh cardboard box.

By the way… Yahoo maps doesn’t do the best route to the local bookstore…purple is the path that they choose… flashing red is mine. As an added bonus, I get to ride through the park, wave at the squirrels, and watch kids practice soccer. The other route goes far out of its way… I’d at least think that the path logic would go to 6th, and shoot straight north. Fewer lights, more direct route. image cut to spare folks not wanting to see a flashing pic.

How was *your* day?

2001/10/23 – at about 14:45 – in a meeting explaining functionality for the new up sequence program (now includes 8-up) I have a coughing fit. a bad one. so bad that I have trouble breathing. the guys in the meeting don’t realize the severity until I dial 911, and hand the phone to Paul because I can’t talk clearly to the operator.

~14:50? (fast!! yay!) Ambulance arrives, and hauls my coughing, sick self to the ER. On the trip, they give me oxygen, and I feel 1000% better.

called doc and was told to go to the ER for a chest X-ray

15:05 – arrived at emergency room, filled out paperwork, mentioned bloody, opaque phlegm, difficulty breathing, cough etc, but and sat here for 45 min. (I was stable by the time I got there)

Got a sputum culture done, a chest x-ray, had blood drawn, got my nose swabbed, along with the usual temperature / pulse / blood pressure.

Took a *long time*. Thank goodness for the palm… between tests, I read the entire onion, and yahoo news, plus some of the books I had packed on there. Also doodled a bit, and made my LJ/palm synch icon. 🙂 I finally got out of there about 19:00 or so, and went to CVS. They’re new to Florida, so don’t support my insurance yet, even though my insurance said they did. Ok, fine, off to Eckerds. They make me wait 45 minutes, and then tell me that they don’t have the antibiotics in stock (they give me everything else), but the store up the road does… I go there, and the tech is having supper behind the counter, and I get to wait another half hour for that medicine. *note to self* Go to Walgreens next time…They’re tons faster, and have my insurance info on file.

Finally got home about 20:45, where I promptly told my poor worried sweetheart where I’d been most of the day.

Home or self-care includes rest and a high-protein diet with adequate fluids, and I’m supplementing that with kung fu movies, cartoons, gabbing with my sweetie, and kitty-snuggles. Maybe a little writing, too. Whatever I can do to fend off malaise.

Yum, Orange Gatorade!

just got home.

Going to hit the sack in about 30 min…

I feel like I have too many irons in the fire… stories to write, programs to produce, a Halloween costume to create, skills in assorted areas to polish.

I’ve got mixed feelings, good, that I’m able to produce… but bad that there are only so many hours in the day to create and learn. I suppose that it’s just a matter of prioritizing, and letting things go where they will.

I found out that Karen and Carmen are now so far on the outs, cohabitation is no longer a valid option. 🙁 that’s too bad, because they’re both very nice people. Well, I can only hope that they manage to find more comfortable living arrangements soon.

The cold seems to be abating, anyway. While I was out sick, Ex-bosses son’s wife turned in her resignation, after telling everyone at the company that the ex-boss would be returning in 2 weeks to take over the workplace again. if that happens, the company will fold as a result of the mass exodus of programmer-folk. Nobody is willing to go back to his regime again, after discovering what working for a real corp is like. As a daughter company to Ramada, we’ve been losing money via bad times for travelling. If we got rid of Ex-boss’s son, that’d free up six large figures for the company to use…. he’s the general manager there now, and all he’s generally managing to do is hide in his office behind locked doors, surfing the web for a 5 or less hour day. He recently pointed fingers at me for surfing and working, which was an attempt to remove blame from himself. Now, I’ve got tracking software installed, monitoring everyone’s “surfitude” I’m poisoning the well a little, only surfing LJ or non-cool sites via Mr laptop. (The reason this post is friend’s only… I know Terri reads my journal without a membership via my homepage.)

I’ve since been assured by the powers above that Wally won’t be returning, and Ramada has stated that Wally’s not only not returning, but there’s a restraining order keeping him from the premises. I will withhold taking that as gospel, but give a good 90-95% chance that Wally won’t be returning.

Enough gabbing about work.

Saw the ‘first contact’ episode of enterprise last night (the only episode I’ve seen, save for the pilot.) It wasn’t bad, but there wasn’t too much to it. guy goes over, touches alien, comes back and finds out he’s preggers, then the crew seeks the aliens back out. That’s really about it. I give it a 5 of 10. blah. Nothing counting for it, but not against it, either. I imagine if the next ep I see is the same, I’ll watch it if I see it, but won’t actively seek it out. (sort of as it stands now.)

I really don’t watch much tube, unless my sweetie is around. Current fun is MAD TV, an episode of COPS, adult swim on the cartoon network, or some discovery channel. I’ll tune in for a meal maybe, but I really don’t have anything that I *must see* to the exclusion of something else.

smallville? Mutant X? nah. maybe in reruns A pity they sacked the lone gunmen.

Ah well. going to lay down and read some Dhalgren for a bit before drifting off. say, when did amazon start putting sample pages in the entries? neat! anyhow, I got the book about a year ago, and pulled it out of a book box after my shelves entry. Looks good! *picks up newtie, and heads for bed*

nigh night.

due to a slimy little weasel (the old bosses’ son), surfing on my machine is now not an option at work. Fortunately, I have my laptop and a dial up connection. I’m not going to show up on the firewall any more. Stupid kid wrecked it for the rest of us.

He shot himself in the foot, claiming that I was surfing all day, and not doing any work. Now that I’ve pointed out that we have monitoring software installed the big boss is going to hopefully see who the real slacker is. (Downside, no LJ or Amazon from work, unless it’s on the laptop, too)
