Happy Birthday to me… 39 years old today! Also, Happy Groundhog’s Day. Saw my shadow this morning – More snow, I guess!

You're older than you've ever been and now you're even older
And now you're even older
And now you're even older
You're older than you've ever been and now you're even older
And now you're older still

Time
Is marching on
And time
Is still marching on

This day will soon be at an end and now it's even sooner
And now it's even sooner

First Present was a box of chocolate-dipped coconut macaroons from BHK by way of the cakery yummo.

Still sickly, so I spent the bulk of today in bed, resting after getting back from my allergy shots. BHK is bouncing back much more rapidly than I am. Big day out will be next weekend, most likely. Heading to Baltimore’s National Aquarium and maybe the B&O railroad museum, if Larry comes along.

Dinner of tasty veggie meatball subs and baked potato – nom nom nom

Birthday cake is dark chocolate, with white icing… and gummi green army men fighting to the top! Pictures to follow as available.

Presents from Kev-o: Godzilla Cartoon – Vol 1, Babylon 5 – The Lost Tales, and Family Guy: Blue Harvest goodie sets.

From Mom& Wilton – $50 Barnes and Noble Gift card.

I get to cut the cake and open my other presents tomorrow! Superbowl Sunday… I’m in a pool, but I really don’t follow football, even if my home team of the Patriots are playing.

BHK buttered my nose sneakily on a sneak behind this morning, after a failed attempt to get my beak while I was showering.

It’s Robb’s birthday today, too… I hope he’s having a dandy one as well! Happy Un-birthday to everyone else!

Oh, come on.. the voice of Bart Simpson is a Scientology supporter, too?

Ugh and yuck. Recent donation list.

  • Nancy Cartwright (Bart and Rufus the Naked Mole Rat), 50, Patron Laureate Award: $10 million.
  • Kirstie Alley, 57, Diamond Meritorious Award: $5 million.
  • John Travolta, 53, Gold Meritorious Award: $1 million.
  • Kelly Preston, 45, Gold Meritorious Award: $1 million.
  • Priscilla Presley, 62, Patron Award: $50,000.

I’m still trying to figure out how Kirstie Alley can afford a $5 mil donation.

I wonder if there will come a time where I boycott all movies because money is going to that organization. Dang Scientology.

Diet Chocolate Cherry Dr. Pepper…. My Closest approximation? It tastes like you’re drinking a chocolate tootsie pop. Not really Chocolaty… oddly synthetic. Cherry Vanilla wins far and above over this, but it’s an interesting variation. Still better than that “Berries and Creme” variant, that I’m not missing at all. Jone’s Chocolate Fudge soda is better, but not much.

9043 – Tuesday.

Yesterday, I played the demo version of Bioshock for the PC while BHK read her book after dinner. Very cool designs and vibe… my only complaint is how some of the splicers look – and that’s a really small complaint. Beats watching the state of the Union Address.

Downright scary game with a pretty keen storyline and set of game-play traits. I’ll probably pick it up after polishing off the Orange box.

In other news, somebody developed a free Apples to Apples online game ! That could be a lot of fun…. I’ll have to invite all my A2A pals to a session. I like that you can contribute new cards. [edit – join me in game 92 – password is the name of a particular orange cat!]

Cough is worse today, went home an hour and a half early. If it keeps up, I’m probably not going to make it in tomorrow.

Earliest Back appointment was on Feb 27… Ah well. Maybe I can work out some other situation for my allergy shots, anyhow… or use the alternate doc.

William H Macy is in Re-animator 4 (House of Re-animator) ? Wha? I’m just glad that Jeffery Combs is still getting steady work from the pseudo-Lovecraft franchise.

I suspect that they’d be pretty tasty to my palate. I do not want them instead of birthday cake.

9111 – New Year’s Eve Eve Eve – Saturday

Spent the day just lounging and folding laundry – Watched 95% of Tin Man… not terrible, not great. I think the 6 hours could’ve been boiled down to 2-3 really good hours.  Something that probably looked cool on the storyboards, but implemented a little weakly.

The only thing we did today was go out and get the mail… nice grab – Kev got me the 4 DVD “final edition / directors cut / us / euro release” set for Blade Runner, and Misti & Co. hooked us up with a $50 gift certificate to Aardvark’s – our friendly neighborhood gaming/comic shop.

Polar Bear Plunge will still happen, unless it gets *really* cold by Tuesday morning.

BHK and I are recovering well from the visits of my Mom and Wilton… it’s fun to host folks, but it’s also nice for some alone-time too.

I’ll be slowly catching up with last week’s entries – so much happening that I’ve not had too much time to document the events.

Hump-day. Somehow, I can’t get the mental picture of dozens of Käpylehmät out of my head. Cone-cows for everyone! Color me spoiled, but I’m glad I’ve got a Wii, a boatload of boardgames, and BHK to play them all with! Come to think of it, maybe she’d like a pine cone duck / llama / puggle for the holidays. This doesn’t look like any puggle I’ve seen.

That said, maybe Pye and Newt would like to play with a few pine cones…. I’ll see what I can round up.

Secret Santa Day at work! I got a $20 gamestop card, a gumdrop penguin, and a candy cane! Thanks, Mystery Kringle! I suspect that’ll be a hefty piece of Mario Galaxy or some other swell game.

BHK and I are just taking it easy tonight… hitting the sack early, too – just as soon as she’s done on the phone with Misti. Apparently Bugah has poor faith about Santa, but they don’t really talk about it. That’s a bummer… hopefully the holiday spirit will still prevail.

“The Tunguska event, an explosion on June 30, 1908, cleared an 800-sq.-mi. swath of Siberian forest. Was it a UFO crash? An alien weapons test? Now, Sandia National Laboratories has released its own explanation for the Tunguska event. Using supercomputers to create a 3D simulation of the explosion, the Department of Energy-funded nuke lab has determined that Tunguska was, indeed, the explosion of a relatively small asteroid. The simulation videos are well worth checking out — they show a fireball slamming into the earth from the asteroid’s air burst. The researchers caution that we should be keeping watch for many more small, potentially earth-impacting asteroids than we are currently tracking.”

Solid sleep, but I woke up once in the middle of the night – maybe that’s why I can recall my dream so readily today. Dreamt that I was living in a haunted house – hanged bodies in varying states of decay kept appearing on the porch. Some of the skulls were certainly not human… more bovine or ursine, depending. I would throw them away, or burn them out in the yard, but the following day, more would be there.

I kept the noose rope, spooling it into a large ball in the back yard, hoping to make the place a roadside attraction. I don’t know why reappearing bodies wouldn’t be enough. For whatever dream-reason, I spun the rope to the tune of Stick Shifts & Safety Belts (Which is still lodged in my head… 16 hours or more later.)

Rather than come for the huge ball of twine, visitors did start to come, due to the delicious smell of charred carcasses. I don’t know why feeding the bodies to visiting people felt OK, but it was guilt-free… my attitude was “hey, they were just hanging there… like selling fruit from my apple tree.”

I hear through the grapevine that one of my old places of business is in a pretty big tangle. Eight people have turned over in a year’s time there. When one considers that they only have 14 positions, five of them part-time and not all 14 existed for that full year, that’s a sure sign of a problem.

Speaking of Grapes… DIET GRAPE AT GIANT HAS RETURNED!!

AT LAST! IT HAS RETURNED!

The only grape soda that I actively enjoy, flavor-wise. Plus, the foam is a soft powder blue, not purple. BHK has been questing for it since mid-june.

Nice.. finally a word of the day I’d not heard before!

Little Red Riding Hood is skipping down the road when she sees a big bad wolf crouched down behind a log.

“My, what big eyes you have, Mr. Wolf.”

The wolf jumps up and runs away.

Further down the road Little Red Riding Hood sees the wolf again and this time he is crouched behind a bush.

“My, what big ears you have, Mr. Wolf.”

Again the wolf jumps up and runs away.

About two miles down the road Little Red Riding Hood sees the wolf again and this time he is crouched down behind a rock.

“My, what big teeth you have Mr. Wolf.”

With that the wolf jumps up and screams, “Will you knock it off, I’m trying to poop!”

BHK got me a Wii for our anniversary! I spotted it pretty much as soon as I sat down in the living room.
My Wii Code is 2667 2084 2657 3823. Get your own WiiBadge at WiiBadge.com!
Our online Number is 2667-2084-2657-3823 if any Wii peeps would like to add us.  Leave your wii number in the comments if you’d like me to add you!

Now I just have to find a game to play online with Bugah, since it seems the sports game that comes with it doesn’t go online multi-player. So far, I’m very good at baseball – terrible at tennis. BHK is excellent at bowling.

Also via BHK – PSA –Dogs in Danger – Stuff like this breaks my heart. Happy Birthday, Peradouro!

I had no idea that Batroc the leaper was a play on Batrachia, – I feel like a bit more of a copy cat with my old super “Grenouille” now.

Speaking of Marvel – Beaucoupkev‘s got me wanting to pick up a used copy of Marvel Ultimate Alliance now.

It’s got MODOK for corn sakes. I can only hope it also has Arnim Zola.

Zombie Fluxx will be waiting for us by Thursday! (And Aardvark has a demo pack coming, too! Hooray for spreading the fun around in the store!)

Transformers is out on DVD today – we’ll add it to the Netflix queue – even if it’s terrible, I’d like to check it out. I make a lousy robot.
but BHK’s cracks me up.

Busy day at work – they had me before I even sat down – doing a lot of quick database fixes. a few items got confused, fortunately, we’re all good about keeping proper backups to all triggers, tables and such before doing any fiddling.

This is National Take Your Teddy Bear to Work Day. Ah well, I missed it! Maybe next year. Probably not. I wouldn’t mind getting a Plush version of a Water Bear. (also known as Moss Piglets)

Tasty Junk food treat – Kellogg’s Cereal Straws– I’m a bit more partial to the Froot Loops version over Cocoa Crispies, but both were snacky-good. The first think BHK said to me was that “Matt is totally going to review these, and you’re going to have wanted ’em, so I beat him to the punch”…. and they are yummy, even without milk.

The Office was one of the better episodes in a long time… funny, and bittersweet, too. Ugly Betty is just ludicrously goofy as well.

Moment of lyric – via – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oeNO56xNlZo

Well, I’d like to visit the moon
On a rocket ship high in the air
Yes, I’d like to visit the moon
But I don’t think I’d like to live there
Though I’d like to look down at the earth from above
I would miss all the places and people I love
So although I might like it for one afternoon
I don’t want to live on the moon

I’d like to travel under the sea
I could meet all the fish everywhere
Yes, I’d travel under the sea
But I don’t think I’d like to live there
I might stay for a day there if I had my wish
But there’s not much to do when your friends are all fish
And an oyster and clam aren’t real family
So I don’t want to live in the sea

I’d like to visit the jungle, hear the lions roar
Go back in time and meet a dinosaur
There’s so many strange places I’d like to be
But none of them permanently

So if I should visit the moon
Well, I’ll dance on a moonbeam and then
I will make a wish on a star
And I’ll wish I was home once again
Though I’d like to look down at the earth from above
I would miss all the places and people I love
So although I may go I’ll be coming home soon
‘Cause I don’t want to live on the moon
No, I don’t want to live on the moon

Opted out of the game convention, as we were slow to rise, and it was shutting down at 2pm. If it had been going until 6 or later, maybe we’d have tagged it. One Car wars game does not a journey validate!

BHK got a new camera, as her old one has pretty much bought the farm. Not bad, $99 Samsung – if it works well for us, I’ll pick up another for myself. I’m just delighted that you can get 2 gig SP cards for about $17, too. about 1200 pictures if taken at 6 mega-pixels… more than enough for casual snaps and fun photos.

Had lunch at Mexico, but we opted out of the road trip to WV… both of us were feeling sort of out of it. Instead, we went to the in-laws for a bit, to review the recently jellied grapes, and just say hi.

After our stop off at the in-laws, to look at jelly, we returned home to eat leftovers from the week (italian, mexican, chinese) and watch The Host. It was a good movie, but not what either of us was expecting. There was certainly a strong amount of allegory there. The CGI was very impressive for the most part, and I liked the basic story, even without the deeper-level tale reflected throughout. I’m pretty impressed with the beastie’s design and acrobatic-style feats. furthermore, I really dug that there was no direct setup for a sequel… it was a self-contained tale, and nothing more has to be done with it… that said, I’m sure that since it’s been so successful that a sequel or two will be made. I wonder that if so, will there be more political type stuf fin the wash, or will it give way to a plain monster movie?

The director, Bong Joon-ho, commented on the issue: “It’s a stretch to simplify The Host as an anti-American film, but there is certainly a metaphor and political commentary about the U.S.”

Still too hot to do much of anything out and about in the Crisco soup-like atmosphere, so we opted to take in lunch at the Sbarro’s in the Annapolis Mall and then hit a movie. Who knows why we woke up at 7:30 on a Sunday, but it gave us a solid head start.

We finally caught the Simpsons Movie on the big screen… I was surprised – it was a lot better than I was expecting… pretty solid TV episode from back when it was funny. We only saw 3 bits that would make it warrant a PG-13 rating – an instance of nudity, a curse word (or two) and some drinking / drug use. I could see them showing all of it after 10pm on network tv unedited, or without those three instances any time at all.

On the way home, we noticed that ATW has changed the sign again, as the search for “the man” continues. (atw is now a tag just for my ease of searching the story thread and pictures, now.)

BHK Birthday Part II: Electric boogaloo!
allisonbdaycake

Party at Tina’s place… Mexican food! Both Meat and veggie protein varieties – Tina’s not a big carnivore, either. Matt (her new boy) seems like a nice enough fellow and I hope they have maximum fun / minimum glum together. He’s certainly more social and generally conversational than DR or W. Dessert was yellow birthday cake with chocolate icing, compared favorably to yesterday’s lemon cake with lemon icing. Added bonus, BHK’s mom didn’t absent-mindedly start slurping the frosting off of the removed candles like last night, rather than giving them to the b’day girl to taste.

Aside from Tina and Matt, Adam, Jimmy, Louise, Chris and Larry all made it to celebrate. We fit pretty comfortably at Tina’s townhouse… I wasn’t sure if we’d all be able to manage, but it worked out quite well.

BHK’s Loot received:

from Louise : Necklace and bracelet of multi-colored pearls.
from Tina : A pair of Peridot Earrings / Hello Kitty purse (which looks like ms. kitty is making a gesture I’m sure wasn’t intentional)
from Larry & Chris – Red Coral necklace and Earrings / and some lovely crockery
from Danny – A swell looking green-stoned ring in gold. (and he got Tina some yellow-stoned earrings, too!)
from my Mom and Wilt – Turquoise and silver necklace, Halloween Snow globe, a little cornucopia and a really lovely card.
from me – a lot of knickknacks – Grease & Grease 2, a pair of pink pseudo-crocks, some stripy socks that mismatch/match, a pink headband with little jolly rogers, bath scrubbie, black cat bowl, a green wire basket, some fuzzy slippers and a gift cert to scalped.

I’m the only person that didn’t get her any jewelry… she told me specifically *not* to get her any. Now, I understand why.

May’ve recruited Adam and Jimmy into a parlor game night. Who knows, maybe they’ll lure Kendall and Amanda into it, too, and we’ll have a big night of it sometime!

I don’t know if Matt is into parlor games… I do know he digs the Redskins and is willing to put up with chick flicks. come to think of it, I don’t know for sure if Tina is interested in boardgames or not… I suspect that she, like the in-laws aren’t really into abstract games. Louise is a good candidate, but is harder to reel in to a date or time than the teens. The last time we saw her was her birthday, about 6 weeks ago.

Poor Danny has students in his classes now – he’s back to running the Sci-fi club, and is incorporating Pirates into the after school program. I should send him a bucket of heroclix or mage knight commons/doubles as a donation. He really liked the Superhero stamps and Lord of the Rings Risk game we shot off to him a little while back.

Google may digitize Michigan State University’s Comics and Pulp Library. (via beaucoup kevin )

With more than 150,000 items, the Russel B. Nye Popular Culture Collection is a major scholarly resource for the study of popular culture from the 19th century to the present. The initial emphasis was on American popular culture, but materials from other countries are now collected as well. While not the largest of its kind in the nation, MSU’s popular culture collection is one of the most usable because of its early adoption of coherent planning that focuses efforts on a limited number of areas. Prominent in those plans are comic art; popular fiction including dime novels, story magazines, pulps, juvenile series books, detective fiction, mystery fiction, science fiction, western fiction and women’s/romance fiction; popular information materials including almanacs and etiquette manuals; and print materials relating to the popular performing arts. Collection parameters evolve to follow trends in popular fiction, recently expanding to include gay and lesbian pulp fiction. Noteworthy elements of the collection include a nearly complete set of Deadwood Dick dime novels and substantial numbers of Tom Swift and Horatio Alger books. In addition, the Comic Art Collection is a research collection of more than 200,000 pieces serving national and international scholars. The strengths of the comic art collection are U.S. comic books, European comic books, U.S. newspaper strips and works on the history and criticism of comics. Less extensive collections are maintained for African, Asian and Latin American comics; fotonovelas; animation; cartooning; Big Little Books; and comics tie-ins. Materials held include the Yellow Kid beginning in 1895 and the Famous Funnies No. l comic book from 1934. The emphasis is on graphic storytelling in the newspaper comics or newsstand comic book tradition to present a complete picture of what American comics’ readership has seen, especially since the middle of the 20th century.

Why don’t poor people save more money? Because they’re better off not to! At least according to a new study from the National Center for Policy Analysis. The LA Times reports :

Low-income households face “astronomical” penalties for saving, according to the report by the National Center for Policy Analysis. For example, each $1 saved by a single mother earning $15,000 a year could cost her $2.60 in higher taxes and lost government benefits.

If I didn’t like tabletop RPG gaming for the social aspect, I think I’d have gone in for use of school supplies, at least at first. I don’t think I’d have stuck around for nearly as long, however.

All kinds of fun can be had with pen lights and long exposures. (the whole site has neat entries)

Yes.com has a nice real-time visualization of what’s being played on the radio around the country (U.S. only.) You can drill down and check out the recently played items of many stations around you as well.

I’m really enjoying Weird Maryland… thanks, bhk! 😀 Even if I don’t get to hunt bigfoot or the anti-santa when I’m up that way, knowledge is power! I wouldn’t mind visiting Poe’s Crypt, if there’s time.

Danny didn’t like 12 Monkeys nearly as much as I do. Yesterday was calm and gentle, and I’m all for that. We discussed a question posed about usefulness of high school algebra by most people in either the workplace or at home. I’ll pass it along here, just as an informal quiz, once he gives me the exact wording. Quite honestly, I don’t really need either much, if any of the math I learned after about 7th grade or so.. or probably earlier… I do rations, percents, and arithmetic a lot, of course, but I can’t remember the last time I had to solve for X or cut something on a proper angle.

I do, however use critical thinking skills all the time, which I think I may have picked up as a side effect of geometry/algebra/calc. If I had it to learn all over again, I would have preferred to learn those skills without some of the more esoteric greek math.

In other news, we had sushi – I had spicy tofu, some tempura sweet potato, and a veggie roll – Danny shared the tofu, and went with his usual Scandinavian-style sushi with orange fishy-eggy-type stuff. It was very pretty for being made of reproductive fish bits.

After Sushi, we went for some walkies around the cove, and discovered a few pretty tasty-looking restaurants for next time. Not a bad mix – Brazilian, French, a Dive bar, and a final place to stop and sum up the night with ice cream. We had a few scoops, and headed back home.

When I got home, I found a lot of goodies waiting for me… 2 Kids in the hall dvds, the final Zim, and best of all, my lovely Yoga package from bhk! In there was a spiffy dvd in 3 parts… AM, PM, and Relaxation. Also in the package was an awesome blue yoga mat, and swell letter to newt and m’self, and a delightful postcard, to boot. Thank you! I plan on doing the nightly on every evening, and the morning stuff on days I don’t get up before dawn. The relaxation, I’ll shoot for midday on the weekends before walkabout.
