6907 – Humpday!

Bro called and apologized for bailing on Monday. Maybe I can take him out to lunch sometime this week.

Oktoberfest is coming… maybe I won’t totally miss it this year. Chicken Dance!

Downloaded Dawn of War demo… it’s really nice. A typical build your resources, make an army , hold your ground game, like age of empires, but graphically amazing… and amazingly graphic. Definitely M for mature. The voice talent is sweet, too. Multiplayer must be a hoot.

I’m doing a community meeting with the local police tonight… Hopefully that’ll fly well. The map stuff always impresses folks.

The Bugmenot plugin for mozilla is great… never have to worry about registering at any news site again… the way it should be.

LA to New York, time lapse drive. pretty spiffy. (quicktime embedded on page, w/sound)

Marvel’s Looking for voice talent for an Avengers Animated movie.

The sample working scripts are sort of cringeworthy.

6895 – Equinox Is Here.

Good morning, and welcome to Autumn, at last! Traditionally a time for change, Autumn has always signaled the beginning of a renewal of life to me.

Though I live in a land where seasons are divided by how moist things are; a place where you can find seas of both brine and concrete, my heart resides elsewhere. Wide open spaces, with tame deer that like to nibble on rosebushes and enjoy a nice salt lick. Trees colored with every warm hue possible… golds, oranges and deep rust-reds. Someday I’ll be there, content in a room lit by purest moonlight, the sounds of acorns tapping the roof, randomly.

Here’s hoping that everyone enjoys the coming season, the changing of colors, Hallowe’en, new scents and the cooling, snuggly times ahead.

The last night of summer was a nearly perfect one for a walk. The 7-11 had the Diet Pepsi Slushie machine working just right, and the air was balmy, but not hot. It could be my mind playing tricks, but Autumn is on its way, for honest and true. I sat by the new river for a few, and looked into the water, just thinking… it amazes me that there are so many quiet, natural places in the city. Things laid out in strips and pieces.. it didn’t feel landscaped at all, but very natural. I think that I prefer to visit the river over the ocean, for whatever reason, despite the sea’s wonderful breezes. The river is more serene, relaxed.

Today’s Moment of Voodoo: The Soul.

In the Voudoun religion of Haiti, one’s existence is made up of five parts: n’ame, the spirit of the flesh; z’etoile, the star of destiny; corps cadavre, the mortal flesh; gros bon ange, a general life force that is recycled and not unique to each person, and ti bon ange (or petit bon ange), one’s personal essence and the source of one’s aura. Only the gros bon ange and ti bon ange are seen as being part of the soul, but all five parts are regarded as important in both life and death, so the distinction is somewhat blurred. The corps cadavre can be made into a zombi (zombie), while the ti bon ange can be captured to create a kind of spectral undead called a zombi astral (spirit zombie).

The CDC reports on who died of what during Hurricane Charley. A total of 31 deaths of which 17 “involved blunt trauma caused by injuries from falling trees, flying debris, and destroyed physical structures” and one drowning.

6323 – First Card of the Season!

Newt and I got a lovely Christmas card from christin and head! Thank you!Site Meter

It’s coming down with thick, heavy drops of rain, so holiday shopping tonight is out. I feel a nap with the Newtster coming on.

Just got off of the phone with my brother, who is sounding really good.. just went through a major flu-bug, and he dried out his system during that time. I hope he bounces back strong and healthy.

My grandmother is improving. had a serious blood infection and pneumonia, but no brain damage and even no stroke. Bottom line is that she’s improving and the infection is gone… so that’s one less worry.

Rhode Island was giving hell to Newbie and CS again today… I think that if it keeps up, they both will walk before the month is through. I’d hate to see Newb go, especially, as we started there the same day, and have a sort of comeraderie, getting together at lunch and gabbing, etc. I’m beginning to wonder if someone dropped a house on RI’s sister.

Flash toons updated here and there – Making fiends #6 & Strongbad Email #91

An uncut, restored version of the original Godzilla will be hitting theaters soon. This is the Japanese original, sans the Raymond Burr inserts.

Pretty awesome… my brother and I went to see The Third Man a few years back, and the same distributor is u[ to their old tricks. More power to ’em!

Tori Amos journal sells for $10,000.

Rudolph: Behind the scenes.… explains Yukon Corneilious’s Pick-licking, among other tidbits.

The problem with having a lot of photography journals on your friends list is that some folks just don’t lj-cut images that are extra wide.

Interesting new feature on lj… a list of folks popular with your friends. Who you might be interested in…The following friends are listed often by your friends, but not by you…

Hmm… certainly a little accounting for taste, there. I’d say that there are about three people on that list that I enjoy seeing “around”… and there are about fifteen people on there that I’m not crazy about… had on my list for a while, or know by indirect connection. There are a few wildcards though. Some folks I don’t know at all are – debby, rillifane, thistimearound, coutlaw, gozar and beckmermaid. Oddly, the only community was … I’d have thought that there’d be more. I’ll peek in on them when time avails itself to me. Probably sometime in November. Thanks to latraviata for the linkie.

I’m glad that it seems that the snipers in Maryland have been caught… I hope that’s the end of that horrible stress. One less thing for folks to worry about. That’s a layer of the onionskin I can peel off. I hope that decompression continues… I feel a couple of weights remaining to be lifted.

I really like the Salem police department’s shoulder patch. That’s the real logo.

Random Scotto factoid – I associate scarecrows with ghosts, but I don’t think of them as frightening. I feel that it’s the arms outstretched perpendicular, strikes me more like a waiting and friendly embrace rather than something that’s been crucified. Perhaps the ghost vibe comes from the old clothes involved in the production I think. The last costume I wore was a scarecrow, going to see Lenny Kravitz with Nicole and Heather… (They were The Wicked Witch and Dorothy, by the way… Both looked outstanding. I still have the floppy hat that I wore, somewhere.) I got some nice compliments when I went out with those two…”Way to go! Lucky Man!” People tended to assume I was dating one or both of them. They were funny… they’d make up stories about me, and then start to believe them… because of something I might have said offhand. I’d feed their imagination by never confirming or denying anything, instead, just leaving open-ended questions with replies that instead raised more queries.

punkinhaid scarecrow

Sweet dreams, dear journal. Or in the words of my pet skeleton…

and when I say good night
the pictures in my head
will dance around the room
and frolic in my bed
and when I say good day
they hide behind my eyes
waiting for the dreaming
to bring them back to life

Bonked my head on a branch outside, earlier. A mild bump formed, but nothing terrible.

My machine’s being downright pesky… giving it a healthy defrag and diagnostic… hopefully that’ll fix what’s wrong. Lost the HD for a bit.

it’s still pretty chunky, but it’s still limping along reasonably well…just a stick and stop sort of thing.

Macho man!

Who wants to be the leather guy for halloween! *snort*

“If that’s a confession, my ass is a banjo.”

Edgar Allen Poe story… Hop-Frog… men dressed in orangutan outfits set on fire, the perils of drinking wine, and why you shouldn’t piss off a dwarf, even if you are a king.

Mmm…. Mexican sugar skulls.

I lost a game of world war to the palmtop…Mongolia finished my last landmasses in Asia. Before I knew what I was saying, I muttered “F-ing MON-GO-REE-ANS!”. I need a great wall to keep ’em out.

I’ve seen no sign of Oktoberfest anywhere. I missed it! German-American Club (warning, tacky embedded wav), you’re slacking with the advertising. I want a hot pretzel with mustard, and a beer! I guess I’ll have to enjoy Bavarian music and chicken dancing in the privacy of my own home.

Looks like a rainy day today… I’m all for that… I just hope it doesn’t make me too sleepy!

Valhalla, I am coming! Image of Newt as a Viking Kitten, shamelessly taken from rathergood.com

Is Thomas a Rhymer? A Peeper? A Doubter? A Tank Engine?

Okie dokie… got up at 8:30 and got my primary chores done. Laundry, bathroom and kitchen are clean. I can take the rest of the day slow and easy.

I plan on chilling out most of the day… no thoughts of work past this one typed line. Newt’s behaving well… staying close and snuggly. He was digging the hanging “spider web” yarn earlier… I think he tuckered himself out batting and tugging earlier.

Gettin' Sleepy by my side.

Dave just called, and invited me over for dinner and some mage knight. I think I’ll take him up on that… It’ll be fun to play a little toy soldiers over veggie burgers and chicken… see the baby and Cathi, too. I think I’ll play orcs & trolls this go ’round… and maybe we’ll set up a 500 point game, just to see how things work on the seige level

Latest wacky cat animation… Elbow – Independent Woman Play that Xylophone, Newt!! sandstar pointed me to the link to that one.

Dad-gum it! Monday is Columbus Day… no postal delivery… fricka-fracka! Hmm.. some shipped on 10/9, and others shipped today….I wonder if at least batch 1 will make it there today?

Cool paper models

I think I’m going to make the graveyard and crypt (#6 & 7) for a little Halloween diorama.

Long week… I’m glad I got to spend some time with my sweetie tonight… she really comforts and makes me feel nice, even when she doesn’t realize it.

Looking forward to a comfy weekend!

Newt trundled up atop the desk here earlier, and brought a snack with him…I quite like that he’s clever in some ways like that. (Better on the desk with me here than using my navel for a food-dish (which he’s also done before.)

I’m going to tuck in shortly… nighty night, dear journal.

I love Halloween! Mexico has the right idea!

mexican skull
monarch butterflies
Every autumn, Monarch Butterflies, which have summered up north in the United States and Canada, return to Mexico for the winter protection of the oyamel fir trees. The locale inhabitants welcome back the returning butterflies, which they believe bear the spirits of their departed. The spirits to be honored during Los Dias de los Muertos.

Los Dias de los Muertos, the Days of the Dead, is a traditional Mexico holiday honoring the dead. It’s celebrated every year at the same time as Halloween and the Christian holy days of All Saints Day and All Souls Day (November 1st and 2nd). Los Dias de los Muertos is not a sad time, but instead a time of remembering and rejoicing.

The townspeople dress up as ghouls, ghosts, mummies and skeletons and parade through the town carrying an open coffin. The “corpse” within smiles as it is carried through the narrow streets of town. The local vendors toss oranges inside as the procession makes its way past their markets. Lucky “corpses” can also catch flowers, fruits, and candies.

In the homes families arrange ofrenda’s or “altars” with flowers, bread, fruit and candy. Pictures of the deceased family members are added. In the late afternoon special all night burning candles are lit – it is time to remember the departed – the old ones, their parents and grandparents.

The next day the families travel to the cemetery. They arrive with hoes, picks and shovels. They also carry flowers, candles, blankets, and picnic baskets. They have come to clean the graves of their loved ones. The grave sites are weeded and the dirt raked smooth. The Crypts are scrubbed and swept. Colorful flowers, bread, fruit and candles are placed on the graves. Some bring guitars and radios to listen to. The families will spend the entire night in the cemeteries.

Skeletons and skulls are found everywhere. Chocolate skulls, marzipan coffins, and white chocolate skeletons. Special loaves of bread are baked, called pan de muertos, and decorated with “bones.

Cervesa!
Handmade skeleton figurines, called calacas, are especially popular. Calacas usually show an active and joyful afterlife. Figures of musicians, generals on horseback, even skeletal brides, in their white bridal gowns marching down the aisles with their bony grooms.

The celebration of Los Dias de los Muertos, like the customs of Halloween, evolved with the influences of the Celtics, the Romans, and the Christian holy days of All Saints Day and All Souls Day, but with added influences from the Aztec people of Mexico.

The Aztecs believed in an afterlife where the spirits of their dead would return as hummingbirds and butterflies. Even images carved in the ancient Aztec monuments show this belief – the linking the spirits of the dead and the Monarch butterfly.

painted desert, halloween, and spiderman.

One year ago tonight, I was sharing thoughts with my beloved of the painted desert… These days, I have a split desire. one side of me wishes to keep her with me, all to myself, and just orbit off into bliss with her. The other half wants to take her around with my hippie buddies, especially Cathi, Dave and Leisa, where we can just goof around and have a big group good time. I want to carve a gourd with all my sweetie and other pals… I don’t know if I’m going to have a pumpkin head on my stoop this year or not. If this cold keeps up, I may just blow off trick or treating again this year.

This coming Sunday, I have to take my bro to Mom’s for her birthday (it’s actually on Nov 1). Got her a nice hibiscus plant, and a gushy card… but I really don’t want to spend much time there. I can be nice and diplomatic for a bit, but I would just as soon keep it to 3 hours or less.

Remembering my first spook house as a little boy… I was probably five or six, and we went to one held at a hospital (I think was… I was little, remember).

I wasn’t afraid of the bloody doctor, or the witch with the cauldron… but a guy in a Spiderman costume grabbed my little brother, and ran off with him… I *freaked*. I went after him, and punched him as hard as my little kid-fists would let me. (not too hard, I guess.) My mother and grandma pried me off of him, but I would have no more of that place… I was pissed, and afraid. Later, I got mad because someone used Spidey’s costume in vain! (Still like ol’ Peter Parker, after all these years.)

I think that’s my first memory of an adrenaline rush.

punkinhead font

Hooray For Sjohn and Cumberland! –

Punkinhead is a dingbat font of Jack-O-Lantern faces, but it’s more
than just dingbats: Go into WordPad (or any comparable program) and set
the paper to portrait, print a single character from this font on
it in the biggest size that fits (often 600ish points) and voila!
You’ve got a Jack-O-Lantern template (or a really cheap, cheesy paper mask).
I doodled these up at Ruta Maya on a writing break, eager to once again
pervert the humble font into doing something unusual.
