9001 – Monday

Hm… Archie McPhee has some nifty zombie toys. I wonder how they’d look on my desk at work? I wonder what other folks would think?

Tigger gaining weight – put her on diet kitty food… I wonder if she thinks that she needs to stock up, in case of being on her own again? She’s not as svelte as she used to be. I think Newt and Pye need to visit her, and give her a running around the house partner or two.

I was creaky this weekend, but am feeling better this evening. A severe case of stumble-thumbosis overcame me this weekend, possibly due to poor sleep on Saturday? Well rested today, and things seem much more in control.

We opened up the pickles ! While a trifle mushy, they aren’t nearly as over-spicy as I’d feared. I wonder how Miz Pix is doing, speaking of pickles?

Final counts on the 2007 summer Icehouse game competition are in – Pylon , Subdivision and Zamboni Wars won the challenge. I’m surprised that Penguin Soccer didn’t do better. All the victors have valid games, but PS just had a fun theme and a reasonable set of rules, especially the 2-player option. I think that it seemed a little skewed, given that they didn’t penalise missing entries.

More pictures of yesterday’s shenanigans – A Corn Cop, Bunnies, and a pumpkin patch.

First day of Autumn! As Lileks put it: The trees have started to tip; the quotient of green diminishes daily. I wonder if we’d love fall less if the colors were ugly; do we like the colors simply because we’re used to them? If everything turned turquoise and pink one year we’d be horrified (well, maybe not BHK) , but if they’d been turning those shades all our lives we’d see nothing wrong. It makes you wonder how much of our fall routines are owed to long-buried instinct. Perhaps we wear brown because there’s an ancient piece of brain-code telling us we should blend in, because there might be tigers about.

To celebrate, we got iced pumpkin coffee drinks and muffins, went to a school supply store to buy cool dice. (Got some for me to game design with, and a few as gift ideas.) Included in the loot were triple dice,(I picked ones with three different colors inside – a red, white, and blue) double dice, foam dice and blank dice (just white cubes you can draw things on), not to mention a few gel pens, index card pads, and other school-supply type goodies.

Went on a tour of a corn-maze, got a pumpkin right out of the patch, petted some goats / sheep / bunnies and pigs, rode a tractor!

Long day at work… lots of time compression due to projects, budget, etc. I’ve got some good teammates and I feel confident that it’ll all work out solidly.

Saw a chipmunk yesterday on the way to work with BHK… first time in the city. That little guy could *run*…. unlike the groundhogs around here, which pretty much just shamble.

Here comes the Equinox.. First Day of Autumn is on Sunday, and the leaves here already beginning to turn.

GORDON Ramsay made a spectacle out of his testicles by burning them on a stove.

He said: “The other day I was standing too close to the stove when I was cooking.

“I was wearing these cotton trousers and underneath I was going commando, suddenly, I felt this searing heat. I went, ‘F**k me, b*****ks to that,’ and for once I was spot on. My balls were burning.”

The 40-year-old then rushed straight to a private London clinic where an ultrasound scan was performed.

“I burnt my right b*****k and I’m in absolute agony,” he added, “You wouldn’t believe how much this hurts,”

Gordon continued: “I went to the hospital because of the excruciating pain. People think I went in for a knee injury, but that’s bulls**t.”

Moment of Lyric – This Must Be The Place – Talking Heads

Home is where I want to be
Pick me up and turn me round
I feel numb – burn with a weak heart
(So I) guess I must be having fun
The less we say about it the better
Make it up as we go along
Feet on the ground
Head in the sky
It’s ok I know nothing’s wrong . . nothing

Hi yo I got plenty of time
Hi yo you got light in your eyes
And you’re standing here beside me
I love the passing of time
Never for money
Always for love
Cover up + say goodnight . . . say goodnight

Home – is where I want to be
But I guess I’m already there
I come home – -she lifted up her wings
Guess that this must be the place
I can’t tell one from another
Did I find you, or you find me?
There was a time Before we were born
If someone asks, this where I’ll be . . . where I’ll be

Hi yo We drift in and out
Hi yo sing into my mouth
Out of all those kinds of people
You got a face with a view
I’m just an animal looking for a home
Share the same space for a minute or two
And you love me till my heart stops
Love me till I’m dead
Eyes that light up, eyes look through you
Cover up the blank spots
Hit me on the head Ah ooh

Bluegrass festival was fun, save for some folks seated in front of us that preferred to have a loud, beer-fueled discussion about the bands on stage rather than just drinking and listening.

Highlights were – Carrie Hassler & Hard Rain – Carrie has some crazy windswept hair going on, and is sponsored by Moon Pies ! Free Moon Pie at Bluegrass fest? How was there not a riot? Most everyone (save for the drunkie mentioned earlier)

Blue Highway put on the best performance, I think, though Larry says (and I’ll buy his expertise on this) that Mountainheart was the most technically able.

Country Gentlemen and Good Deale put on a fine show, as well. Lots of fantastic dobro work, especially.

There’s something to be said for groups not big enough for a massive following to team up and bring a whole day of music to the area. A pity Alison Krauss wasn’t there – if she had been, I think it’d have just been icing on the cake. I guess that’s the price of fame… you can tour on your own.

Slept in until about 10, and then we toddled off to the Renfaire. Highlights of the day were Johnny Fox, Hack & Slash, Swami Yohmahmi, Horsemen, Bear-baiting and Witch Trial, and time at the Kadon games building again. BHK and I swapped off on taking pictures with the new camera – viewable here.

BHK got pulled into participation on two shows, as well – As Hack’s Mom in the Cruel and Unusual Show, and face-spike examiner (she got to keep the spike – eww) at the Swami’s. Also obtained was a Swami Yo sticker.

We looked at quite a few boardgames, but none grabbed us hard enough for an immediate purchase. I was a little disappointed in Y, (it seemed a bit limited) but Star may have some longer-term potential – maybe a bit too much like go, though. I’d say that my favorite of the wooden games so far is still Quintillions– I’m tempted to make my own set as well as purchase the original from the source. The Kadon people have some nifty plastic art/ game boards… I wouldn’t mind commissioning a custom 8×8 volcano-type one with a frosted transparent bottom for playing sleestak/pylon icehouse games.

Food Sampled at the Fair by BHK and/or me –

Mac & Cheese on a stick.
BBQ Turkey on a bun (BHK only)
Deep-fried Oreos (I wonder how many days-worth of calories *that* was?)
Broccoli Cheese Soup in a bread bowl
[edit: Chocolate covered cheesecake on a stick!]
A ton of water / diet pepsi

Went right from the Rennfest to the in-laws for supper… like we could eat anything after all of that stuff… still, I managed a plate, sans seconds.

snagged from all over-

1. Whats something thats heavily weighing on your mind?
Solidification of current programming tasks overseas. taking time, doing it right.

2. Whats one thing you’ve learned from a good friendship gone bad?
Communication is key.

3. Whats one thing you’ve learned lately from love?
There’s a time to lead, and a time to follow… mostly though, it’s a time to walk side by side.

4. Is there anyone special in your life in general at the moment?
Dern tootin’!

5. Whats a happy time you’ve had in the past week?
I’ve had quite a few! Review the last 7 days in the journal for more info. Overall, I just love being with BHK.

6. Is there anything in your past that you’d like to try again?
I don’t want one of those weird time-travel paradox things to break my current existance, which is pretty dang keen. a simulation viewer, sure, I wouldn’t mind seeing a few revisions on key events in school, socialization, and so on.

7. Who do/did you like to spend your nights with?
BHK, Newt, Pye.

8. Are you an emotional person?
I certainly can be.

Tasty Falafel last night, despite BHK not feeling well.

Took her out tonight, glad that she’s up to it… maybe a little cheeburger cheeburger and a road time will jump start her to feeling better for the weekend!

After a tasty garden-cheeburger, frings and cherry chocolate shake, we swung by the store and got her some new jeans, before making a very brief visit to eyeball Comics and Games and Stuff. (Courtesy of The Looney Labs store finder )

Dropped 12 for 3 very inexpensive games – Change! , Cosmic Coasters, and The Very Clever Pipe Game. All of which should be wonderful additions to our games closet, and are pretty small and portable, should we decide to take ’em with us somewhere.

Speaking of new, portable games, Eryx wrote us and mentioned that he’s sending us a copy of EcoFluxx as a wedding present! Thanks Eryx! We need to steal him from the UK and have him visit sometime. 🙂

Also the Labs have recently produced Twin Win, an Icehouse game suitable for use while waiting in line.

3,000-year-old beehives unearthed in Israel

Archaeologists digging in northern Israel have discovered evidence of a 3,000-year-old beekeeping industry, including remnants of ancient honeycombs, beeswax and what they believe are the oldest intact beehives ever found.

My immediate living area’s population has doubled by a person and a cat since a little over a year ago. I like it much better that way, as I adore them.

Stolen Catalytic Converter from one of our accountant’s truck from our company’s parking lot.. . certainly not an isolated issue – seems to be happening all over MD and VA

Thieves are targeting fleet vehicles parked overnight in secluded parking lots. Their target? Catalytic converters.
The theft of catalytic converters is a growing crime trend happening throughout the country. For instance, on May 30, Comcast discovered seven catalytic converters stolen from work trucks parked outside its office in Gambrills, Md. This wasn’t the first time. Earlier, on July 18, the same Comcast location reported the theft of 18 catalytic converters. On May 28, Adscom reported 16 catalytic converters stolen from new Chevrolet and GMC cargo vans parked behind its building in Glen Burnie, Md.

These crimes are not restricted to just large fleets. Smaller fleets are just as vulnerable. Dreisbach Florists in Cincinnati reported to the police that catalytic converters were sawed off three of its vans. Nor is this a problem restricted to the U.S. The BBC reports an increase in catalytic converter thefts in the U.K.

Precious Metals Inside
Police first began noticing catalytic converter thefts about eight months ago. Thieves aren’t interested in the catalytic converters themselves; they’re interested in the precious metals inside, which are easily recycled. The average catalytic converter contains one to two grams of three precious metals – platinum, palladium, and rhodium. That equals about 0.07 of an ounce, meaning 14 or 15 converters are needed to equal one ounce of the metals. However, the commodity rates for these metals have skyrocketed in the past two years.

For criminals, catalytic converters are as good as gold. Actually, better. In comparison, gold prices reached $670 per ounce in June 2007. According to online commodities Web site www.kitco.com, the price of rhodium has shot up in the past five years from $900 to almost $6,000 per ounce in June. Palladium rose from about $189 per ounce two years ago to a high of $371 in June. Between June 1, 2005 and June 1, 2007, the price of platinum rose 67 percent, from $870 per ounce to $1,295.

A quick perusal of the Internet reveals that hundreds of recyclers across the country are buying catalytic converters for the precious metals. Catalytic converters need to be sent to a recycler that has the equipment to perform the chemical process necessary to extract the metals. Metal recycling companies will pay anywhere from $25 to $150 apiece for catalytic converters. A search of the Web reveals a wide range of catalytic converter buying and selling activity across the United States and overseas. There are Web sites that describe how to collect and sell catalytic converters to the right buyer. One site includes photos of the tools to use, such as electric saws, hydraulic jacks, and portable generators.

High Clearance Vehicles at Greater Risk
The catalytic converters are usually stolen from high-clearance vehicles. Most thefts occur at night. A thief can slip under a vehicle and, with a battery-operated saw and metal-cutting blade, make two quick cuts and remove the catalytic converter. Some vehicles have catalytic converters that are bolted on, which are the easiest to remove. The theft can take as little as five to 10 minutes. With some models, thieves use a reciprocal saw to cut the catalytic converter from the exhaust systems underneath the vehicle. Other models require thieves to use an acetylene torch to remove the catalytic converter. Recovering stolen catalytic converters is virtually impossible since they are not inscribed with serial numbers that can be used to identify them.

Often, catalytic converter theft is by drug addicts. Many of those arrested for stealing catalytic converters are heroin addicts. It’s a quick crime for a drug addict to get cash. There are also more sophisticated thieves who know exactly what they were doing and already have buyers lined up for the stolen catalytic converters. Many are shipped to recycling companies in Poland, Canada, China, and Latvia, where they undergo a carbochlorination process that extracts the precious metals.

Securing Vehicles After Work Hours
Fleets victimized by this crime must spend anywhere from $600 to $1,400 to install a replacement catalytic converter. The theft results in immediate downtime for the vehicle since it is illegal to drive without a catalytic converter. It is also extremely dangerous, since the hot exhaust blowing from sawed-open exhaust pipes could heat the nearby fuel tank to the point of exploding, if driven long enough.

Still in a Rennie sort of mood, we plopped Gamerz into the DVD player, and started with a movie. I think the film was good, but the shadowplay gaming sequences and the fact that they all had actual Scottish accents probably raised it up from three and a half to four stars out of five. I think that they fairly pegged a few of the internal workings of a game group pretty darn well – Perhaps more like EMAGE [the group with AP, RI, HI, BG, and RobbC more than the 90’s group with GP, Kat, PM or alternates DougW, KathyW & DanC – with short termers of Kelly, DonM, Ed, RikL, RickC and Tony.]

HI (or now HG, I guess since she divorced RI married BG after becoming preggo with BG’s kid *DRaaaahmaaaah*) –

The elf chick in the movie was a pretty entertaining blend of the more negative sides of H’s flittery “look at me, I’m full of BS” and KathyW’s “Look at my Character! It’s me! I’m full of insanity” personality-wise. I could draw pretty solid connective lines to the others in that group, too, including myself.

Went on a fun drive hither and yon today… Went no place in particular, but discovered some new lands North and West of Baltimore. Nice time tooling around the Enchanted forest, where we took some photos (to follow later ) and I got a haircut at the Enchanted forest haircuttery… followed by a grilled cheese and pancakes for BHK and me at the Enchanted forest diner. Interesting place… I look forward to our follow up road trip to Elioak Farm, to see the refurbished elements. The food was good, but I suspect the grill hadn’t been scraped since opening in 1957.

A year ago today, I landed in Maryland. Life’s been pretty damn good ever since.

A lot of groundbreaking stuff has happened in the year between then and now.. most of it documented here, some not so much, as I’ve been really spending a lot of time enjoying life more than documenting it.

I’m married, living in a new state, a new job, a new everything, really…. I really officially started on that path a year ago. It’s been a mighty fine journey so far… I can hardly wait for the years ahead.

Moment of Lyric – Jason Falkner “This Will Be Our Year” (Zombies cover)

The warmth of your love
is like the warmth of the sun
and this will be our year
took a long time to come

don’t let go of my hand
now darkness has gone
and this will be our year
took a long time to come

and I won’t forget
the way you held me up when I was down
and I won’t forget the way you said,
“Darling I love you”
You gave me faith to go on

Now we’re there and we’ve only just begun
This will be our year
took a long time to come

The warmth of your smile
smile for me, little one
and this will be our year
took a long time to come

You don’t have to worry
all your worried days are gone
this will be our year
took a long time to come

and I won’t forget
the way you held me up when I was down
and I won’t forget the way you said,
“Darling I love you”
You gave me faith to go on

Now we’re there and we’ve only just begun
and this will be our year
took a long time to come

Yeah we only just begun
yeah this will be our year
took a long time to come

Note to self- check out some local gaming – 8/31-9/3 – http://barkingmad.org/Laurel’s about an hour’s drive… I think that perhaps it’s time to start our own gaming warren in North Beach. Granny at Yucata suggested as much last night. Alternately, the Games Club of Maryland looks promising. (Annapolis meets every other Saturday from 6-11pm, for example.)

I’m a French Toast man myself, but this week’s Photoshop Phriday theme is utter genius: Grindhouse Breakfast Cereals. I would start buying breakfast cereal if the boxes looked like this. My friend Stacey, an immortal bride of Count Chocula, is sure to be disappointed when she clicks the link though.

Friday 5:

1. At the end of today, do you think you’ll feel spent or refreshed?
Probably pretty spent! Work, out with BHK, Tina and the In-laws at cheeburger^2 for dinner, some light shopping, and I’m wiped!

2. Do you like back rubs?
Who the devil doesn’t like a back rub?

3. When did you last mislead someone?
I’m not sure… probably tricking BHK about some aspect of her Birthday party tomorrow.

4. What color are your eyes?
Blue.

5. Friday fill-in:
Lastly, let me know how I’m doing, right or wrong.

Things of note – when getting an ekg or a stress test, I was stuck on a stretcher for about 8 hours straight. Do it again? thank you, no.

Off on a date to see Stardust – Double dated: Bhk and Me / Kendall & Adam. We all enjoyed it – a nice combination of humor, mild violence, and general purpose fairy tale.

Played 4 games of polarity with BHK – won 3 – Also won 1 game of martian coasters.

Sunday morning started with more reading, and a repeat of BHK napping a little bit while I played Pyramids and Dominoes with EM. Once we were all cleaned up and ready, we toddled off to Chris and Larry’s for a tasty breakfast of Belgian waffles w/ ice cream and fresh made strawberry syrup – Em ate 6 or 7 pieces of bacon, and a whole waffle! That little critter can *eat*!

DSCN5926 DSCN5930 - monkey
Post breakfast gluttony, (see photos), we headed down to the Bay to take a moment to search for fossils – – Emily got a lovely little bag of shark’s teeth and shells to take back with her.

At about 1, it was time to head out for our rendezvous with Misti at the Arby’s – a reasonable halfway point between our homes (approximately an hour drive for each). during the drive, we saw quite a bit of Amish country, down to several Horse-drawn carriages – apparently you can pass them on a double-lined highway, unlike normal cars. A pretty broad assortment of them were out and about, covered and uncovered, families and older couples.
DSCN5941 DSCN5938

After lunch and switching Em’s car seat to Misti’s truck, we encountered two stray cats lurking around the parking lot.

DSCN5942 DSCN5948

After a little deliberation, we decided to take them someplace safer, either a no-kill shelter, home with us, or at least to a region without as much high-speed car traffic nearby. They’re Brother and sister, I think, and about four months old.
DSCN5947 DSCN5944

We did have to name ’em, rather than just boy or girl –

Ripley – White and tan little guy (Named for a place that has a bit of meaning for ussee also ) The little lover… all about snuggles and purrs.

Pomonkey – Longhair Tabby female, looks like a “what if Pye and Newt had a daughter” Hair length and ear-wispies of pye, with Newt’s markings. (Name based on a city’s name I learned a while back and haven’t stopped enjoying yet) Super curious, purrs easily, too.

After taking them to the vet to be tested for Feline Leukemia (and anything else that might hurt Pye and/or Newt), they came home with us to stay in the guest bathroom. We located a good foster home for them both, and I don’t think either one will have any trouble being adopted.

While we’d love to keep them, we just don’t have the ability to do so in a good way. I really wish that we could… makes me want to own a barn a mile away from anywhere, just so we can have a homestead with a bunch running around.

Since we waited at the vets for about 5 hours (emergency room for animals – triage… the kitties were pretty dang healthy except for ear mites, so other, more urgent cases had priority.)

We watched the Meteor shower for about 3 minutes until we both got super sleepy, and had to head to bed. Caught a few shooting stars, though!

8938 – Sunday

Crashed hard last night once we got back – comfy weekend, sort of like this found shot of Newt from Friday.

newtcamroller

This morning BHK and I lazed in bed for a good chunk, spending a little time reading or fooling on the laptop, before getting up and heading off to points non-bedlike. We played a bit here and there in yucata, superdupergames, tribal wars, and bella sara – I’ve discovered that I do better sitting cross-legged over laying back with the lappie.

Post-laziness, we headed out for a random road trip, and ended up going to Dream Wizards which was exactly like what we were hoping for (but didn’t get) when we hit the Strategist a couple of weekends back. A large gaming area, very well-stocked collection of games of every stripe, and attentive personnel. Of course there was the standard “teen-boy scent” – BHK noticed the was one half of the female population (the male population was maybe 25 or so) – the other a young kid, probably 12-13, playing Pokemon happily amongst the sea of boys. BHK also got to see a low-grade temper tantrum from one of the other players in a tournament… complaining that his purchased booster pack was useless… stomped and slapped the pack down amongst the poor counter-folk. I suspect that he was maybe about a half-hour to an hour to being ejected from the premesis.

I couldn’t resist picking up a copy of Polarity (thanks again for the hint, Keethrax!) and Cosmic Wimpout … a Yahtzee-like dice game I used to enjoy back in high school. I think the last time I played it was about 20 years ago in Mr. Eck’s Marine biology class, fourth period. Not sure of the exact day, but it was near the end of the school year in 1987.

Still no leads on the Pirates “Glittery” boosters, like Amy’s. BHK must have a giant crab covered in glitter to destroy ships with!

After that, we hit the Home goods store, shopped the Halloween goodies and got a few little household treats.. Some green cups, sugar free blueberry syrup, and Halloween sprinkles for cupcakes later in the season.

We consulted our good friend Zagat, and found an entry marked Lighthouse Tofu – a total wildcard as there weren’t enough reviews to give it any scores for service, menu or whatnot. (The link goes to the yelp page, which would’ve been more helpful, had we thought to look it up first). I think we stumbled upon a local Korean fave… The place was packed and we were the only non-asian couple in sight.

We ordered more than we thought, as everything was served home-style – even though we didn’t ask for it, we got an appetiser of Miso soup, followed by a broad assortment of dishes with a little sampling of this and that – Bok Choy in some Oyster sauce that was tasty but quite spicy, some minced garlic in clam sauce, some manner of peppers in a cool/spicy soup, cucumbers (my fave of that lot… sweet and spicy), and some sprouts in sesame oil. – all came before what we had ordered. BHK had the tofu vegetable soup that came to the table still at a rolling boil and served with a raw egg on the side – to be added to the soup manually. I got an assortment of sushi, of which I think the Tofu sushi was the winner. The “prima vera” one of mixed veggies was tasty, but the weakest of the lot – Tofu, tempura lobster, and cucumber all were just amazing.

They serve water with a little green tea added, which is disconcerting at first, because it has an off-yellow/green color that I have seen come out of the pipes in some well water communities – suffice to say that it was clean and delicious. No worries there.

As a palate cleanser, they also serve a little rice cooked in green tea at the end of the meal – I liked it!

Our host was friendly, and I think that he assumed we had never been out to eat at a place like theirs. He was kind enough to move us to another table when we realised our little 2-up location wasn’t going to hold all the food we had coming. – and then explained the difference between light and regular soy sauce.. also warned us against wasabe (he seemed pleased when I was enjoying a healthy dollop dipped from same mixed with the soy on my cucumber roll)

Oddly, he didn’t give any food consumption tips regarding the egg in the soup, which I think was the most culturally mysterious of the lot.

On the way out, he took me aside, and passed me a pair of strange little bottles covered in text that I couldn’t read, and a small oval with larger text inside (picture to follow – maybe I can get talonvaki or pilarcruz to translate it for me)…. said it was dessert, and to enjoy.

It looked like milk, and smelled faintly of vanilla, so I shrugged and took a swig. I was not expecting the lemon flavor at all, but it was pretty dang tasty. I don’t think BHK was as impressed, but she liked it fine.

Also on the way up and back, we got to see the Mormon Temple which is amazing to watch rise up over the horizon as you approach. The place is huge and beautiful – while lovely, the pictures don’t do it justice at all.

We had one last stop before heading home… the in-laws. Chris and Larry did a great job of pickling our cucumbers – about 30 mason jars worth. We won’t be needing any store-bought pickle-type product anytime soon. BHK is planning on using the remaining 3 or 4 jars to do some pickled peppers ala Peter Piper, although we don’t quite have a peck.

I’m just wondering where we’re going to store 30-odd jars of preserved veggie. I guess the garage is a reasonably cool, dry, dark place for ’em. They have to steep in the brine for a brief period before eating. I wonder how long they’ll stay good? If you don’t break the vacuum seal, I imagine we can store them fairly indefinitely – not sure how long they stay good once that seal is broken, though. I imagine that won’t be an issue, as this family loves ’em.

8935 – Thursday

After work last night, BHK and I had dinner at the Lebanese Taverna and then went to see Talk To Me which was surprisingly better than I thought. No roles were stepped on by big names (Cedric the Entertainer had me a little worried when I saw him in the credits) Some aspects of Petey Greene‘s life were left out, but you really can only do so much in a 2-hour movie. Plot-wise, there weren’t any surprises, but the story’s path seemed comfortable with simple viability. Though it was supposed to have taken place in DC, the bulk seems to have been shot in “generic city” or indoors – I didn’t get the Capitol vibe from the location. I’m glad we opted for that over The Simpsons or Transformers… I was more in the mood for a biopic than cartoony smash-em-up or yuk-em-ups.

On the way home, BHK pointed out to me that someone stole the man atop ATW hardware… now there’s a sign. “Return the Man now – Yes it was stolen)

All will be sniffed over in time, I’m sure – and now, the morning brings a new day. My ride to the train station overslept, but bhk got me to the station in fine time to catch my train into the city. That’s the good thing about planning ahead and making allowances for traffic and whatnot… I’m usually in by 8am, and this way, I got there by 8:30 (the time I’m officially due to arrive.) I did miss my “arrive by 8” bus by about 10 minutes, so I spent about 20 minutes waiting for the next one. – Gave me time to take the pictures below and write the text above on my phone.

Good meeting at work today about upgrading our CMS. I like the way folks are looking to work together for a solution, rather than complain – project appears to be slated for the end of ’07, or the beginning of ’08 for testing.

Constellation Power has applied to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to put a new nuclear reactor in Calvert county, the fourth to be applied for, nationwide, this year. There hasn’t been a new nuclear reactor built in the US since the Three Mile Island disaster, but with new tax incentives for power providers who get their applications complete before the end of next year, companies are positioning themselves to be able to take advantage of the new situation.

Are we ready for nuclear again? The US kind of freaked out after the Three Mile Island near-meltdown and the Chernobyl disaster, but with power needs proving insatiable, and with fossil fuels being subject to significant negative public attention due to global warming concerns, the timing could be ripe for an expansion of nuclear power.

Will it do anything to lower our power build? Almost certainly not. But, it might decrease dependence on fossil fuels, which can be considered a positive.

Tonight, I’m tucking in early to recoup a little extra rest.

So, it’s August… only a couple of weeks until BHK’s birthday, Father in-laws birthday, and we’re looking to have Emily over in a weekend – and then the all of the Newsoms over perhaps two weeks after that. Emily is about 5 years old now, and she reminds me of little bit of Wendy, way back when 9even though Wendy was maybe twice that age. I still remember acting like a monkey with

for her, over a decade ago. Ook ook, extend the upper lip, scratch the noggin and the armpits, do a bowlegged walk… still brings a giggle to the young ladies. I doubt the Wendy would as be amused these days… she’s got to be 21 by now? maybe 22? She’s probably into more “grown-up” pursuits. I wonder how she and Marty are doing?

Thoughts for Emily’s visit.. Baltimore Aquarium, Blink (maybe try Uno?), Walking on the Boardwalk / Beach, Playstation, Fireworks, and the Candy Store. None of those are set in stone and there are other possibilities, too.

Hey, it’s August first! Happy Lughnasadh, the holy day of Lludd!

Netforum 2006/01 or /02? Upgrade is looking pretty essential. That’s been part of my work lately, reviewing the next build and how well it’ll get into place. I just want it to be as seamless as possible… minimise any growing pains.

Being a giant guy has the side effect of being used as a mobile landmark. I’ve had folks tell their kids that if the get lost, look for me in a crowd. Not for me to babysit ’em, just that my head and shoulders tend to bob above other folks nearby. Also, it appears that I’m one of those “hey, I know you” types. I look both kind and trustworthy as well as looming and scary. I guess it depends on if I’ve shaved around the goatee and am more awake than walking dead. (In that case, folks cross the street to get away from me.) I’ve been in Maryland for about eight months now, and my newest gig just one. I’ve already been invited to a lot of picnics, parties, etc…. I don’t think it’ll be too long before the combination of North Beach’s small-townishness and other friendlies at work spirals it back up to a broader friends base. Right now I’m still a bit of “BHK’s Hubby” or “Larry’s Son-in-law”.

Back in the old days (when I was in high school and thereabouts) I was Mr. connected. Everyone knew me, or knew of me through someone else. I’m not sure how that happened, but I suspect it’s a side effect of the landmark issue above. I seldom bothered anyone, and folks rarely gave me any guff. I’m not as connected anymore – living in a new state, new job, etc. This came up during a little message exchange with Sirenity… regarding people who get talked to or “hey do I know you”ed a lot.

Dreamt of a white panel van with the word destruction on it. – BHK and I were hunting down somebody who sold us a faulty bed. We were pretty mad…. I wonder what we were going to do once we got the guy? That has no relation to the sailboat dream where all we had to eat was trader joes snacks that had gone stale. We were trapped on a catamaran with a big bag of stale crisps and candy-coated sunflower seeds… and no clean water.

Picked up a pair of new shirts, and two new ties. I never thought I’d ever own a purple shirt I could wear to work. I *really* never thought I’d ever wear a tie to work. Who knew? I actually enjoy putting on a corporate noose every here and again, even though it’s not required wear in the office. It makes me feel a bit more professional and has the sense of a “uniform” to keep me a bit more focused on my tasks.

Sting from the Macaroni Grill wasp has completely faded.. .it really didn’t feel like a sting so much as a very brief electrical shock followed by swelling.

Chore Wars lets you claim experience points for household chores. By getting a few people in your house or workplace to sign up, you can assign experience point rewards to individual chores, and see how quickly each of you levels up. Experience points are tracked both as weekly high-score charts, and as ongoing character sheets – every time you rack up 200XP of chores, your character gains a “level”, and their class changes to match the type of chores that they’ve been doing. (here’s my character, if you want to invite me to your party )

There’s a page over at MySpace that features what they’re cloyingly calling “minisodes,” which are episodes of television shows edited down to six to eight minutes. Having watched an episode of The Facts of Life and one of Silver Spoons, I really wonder what they did with the other eighteen minutes. (via lore )

Was going to the Kwik-E-Mart after work, see also , but instead got a fresh haircut (as did BHK) at Scalped.(we love Margaret and Ami)  Perhaps tomorrow?

Thinking about getting into letter-boxing in addition to geocaching… it seems more quaint and less commercial than what geocaching has become. BHK is more about the hikes than the technology, and I think we both would enjoy just getting out and wandering around a bit.

The Hippie Trail LbNA #: 26192

Placement date: Oct 8 2006
State: Maryland
County: Calvert
Nearest city: Huntingtown
Number of boxes: 2

Clues

King’s Landing Park, King’s Landing Road (off Huntingtown Rd).
Enter King’s Landing Park, and go the parking by the fence on the far side of the pool. Across the fence you can see the sign that says “Explore your Chesapeake”. Go to the path to the right of the sign, and take the right fork to the straight path. Almost immediately on the right, you’ll see a little sign by the woods that says “Trail” and a large sign with a roof that talks about Orienteering. Veer off the path and enter the woods by the Trail sign. You might want to grab a walking stick for the Flower Box.

Smiley Box- THIS HAS BEEN MOVED
At the start of the first board walk, look to your right. 24 paces away will be a fallen tree with its roots sticking up in the air. Right underneath the roots is the Smiley Box.

Flower Power Box
Continue to follow the path towards the wetlands. Where the path splits left towards the water and a sign that says “A Marsh for All Seasons” go right, away from the water. About 25 paces, look on the left and see 3 very large trees that grew out of one bottom, immediately off the path. Walk up the hill behind it, and see another smaller light colored tree that is about 4 paces behind it, then a large tree about 5 paces behind it at the top of the hill. Flower Power is hidden in the tree at the bottom back side under leaves in a notch in the tree.
