Concentration and Memory. A pair of enemies I’ve had to combat more than a few times in my life.

I’ve sometimes wondered if DMAE would help with those weaker areas of my brain… but I don’t think I want the trade off. I do feel that both memory and concentration can be worked and built up over time… part of the reason I’m enjoying hot brain is some possible side effect of improved function in that area.

I played with mercury when I was in high school, and sometimes wonder if it cost me some IQ points. What about drinking? That kills brain cells. A few fights where I had a little jarring head trauma. What if instead of just being pretty dang smart, that I were brilliant?

I’d probably be less sympathetic, more evil, and give in to temptation to herd pathetic sheeple, bend them to my will and then just laugh, laugh, laugh would be too great.

Um, did I just write that?

Oops.

Part of the reason I’m better at playing it by ear, I guess.. .a reflex of having to dance around memory?

Cyn pointed me in the direction of Yelp! – I’ve already added two reviews.. one for someplace I love to eat… the other place, not so much.

Slurpee Day 2007
– Just a reminder to all: July 11th is once again Slurpee day – a wonderful day to celebrate the creation of the Slurpee. This year, as in the years before, 7-Eleven stores will be handing out free 7.11oz Slurpees from 7am until 11pm (or until supplies last). Or are they free Squishies, with the Simpsons Promotion?

Sicko actually has the undivided attention of Blue Cross, Blue Shield. Cool. It also offended Hillary. She would have made more points staying put and facing the music. My big problem with Sicko was that I thought it was more “preaching to the choir”. If someone’s actually paying attention, so much the better. Additionally, Bush says the sorry state of health care is all the American people’s fault.

Still unsure if I’m going to Salem with BHK for the weekend. I’ll be mostly useless there for whatever projects they have in mind, but I can bring the laptop and work on whatever else in the meantime, if I can get online. Maybe take in a little walk or two when the sun goes down and the lightning bugs are will-o-wisps.

Reading old travel books or novels set in faraway places, spinning globes, unfolding maps, playing world music, eating in ethnic restaurants, meeting friends in cafes whose walls hold the soul-talk of decades- all these things are part of never-ending travel practice, not unlike doing scales on a piano, shooting free throws, or meditating. They are exercises that help lure the longing out of the soul and honor the brooding-over of unhatched ideas for journeys.

But the oldest practice is still the best. Take your soul for a stroll. Long walks, short walks, morning walks, evening walks- whatever form or length it takes. Walking is the best way to get out of your head. Recall the invocation of the philosopher, Soren Kierkegaard, who said, “Above all, do not lose your desire to walk: Every day I walk myself into a state of well-being and walk away from every illness; I have walked myself into my best thoughts.” As if in his footsteps, Friedrich Nietzsche also remarked, “Never trust a thought that didn’t come by walking.”

8907 – Sunday – 8

I forgot to mention that we picked up Hot Brain last night, and did a little walk-shopping in Barnes and Noble.

My current (one game in) abilities are: (on a 0-120 scale)

  • Logic – 118.03
  • Math – 120.00
  • Memory – 67.16
  • Language – 112.50
  • Concentration – 60.40

Average Brain temp – 95.618 – red hot… but a lot of room for improvement, especially in the Concentration and Memory Department. They’re pretty fun little logic puzzles.

Hot Pixel is next on my psp game-list.

Sunday was primarily about chores and getting to things that needed doing. My end of things included kitty litter, laundry folding, insurance forms, a letter to bro, amongst others.

Watched the good bits of Night of the Comet and then The Frighteners while folding clothes, etc. Makes things that much more wonderful. Super hot outside, so gardening was kept to the shade or out of the sun as much as possible.

BHK and I took took an all-too-brief excursion to a new candy store that opened about a week ago in North Beach. I suspect it won’t do as well as the other one, even though the older of them keeps banker’s hours at best. He simply has been there longer, and is right on the boardwalk strip. The new store is right where BHK used to work… I got to buy some gummi taperworms where she first IM’ed me about 4 years ago. Hard to believe that was a landmark moment leading to us getting together. Heck, it’s hard to believe we’re well over seven months married, come to think of it. I would never have guessed back then that I’d be living outside of Florida now.

At about the end of Frighteners, Louise and the in-laws swung by to chow down on goodies from our garden. Tina and Doug couldn’t make it as they were pooped from a the road trip.

Pictures of our garden’s bounty – beets, stuffed peppers, peas, green beans, potatoes, squash, zucchini. BHK makes veggies that even a little kid would gladly attack and consume. I didn’t think that I’d like the beets, but they were surprisingly good. I’m still not crazy about leeks.

8905 – Friday the 6th

Lots done at work today… a good ending to the week. I have to get with CS first thing on Monday (or after she’s back) about streamlining more processes. I’m pretty pleased with the current learning curve and the gang there thus far.

Outside of work – Autorealm – reminder to self – investigate other uses.

Tonight, we’d planned on a visit to see Sweeney Toddbut the venue wasn’t up to the task of seating us. However, we may make plans make it easier in the future. (Thoroughly Modern Millie may have better odds.) instead, we wandered around Annapolis, had a lovely bite to eat at Davis’ Pub (the onion rings were especially to my liking) and then went to see the latest Die Hard movie. Not bad… took place in Baltimore / DC (sort of a one globby city) and had lots of explosions and beaten up Bruce Willis in it.

We also got to visit the Maryland Kwik-E-Mart – pictures will follow of this nifty bit-o-advertising later in the week. Our Clerks were I. P. Freely, and Mae B. Drunk.

I would really like to get this… (via ectoplasmosis )

Count Gottfried von Bismarck, who was found dead on Monday aged 44, was a louche German aristocrat with a multi-faceted history as a pleasure-seeking heroin addict, hell-raising alcoholic, flamboyant waster and a reckless and extravagant host of homosexual orgies…

The great-great-grandson of Prince Otto, Germany’s Iron Chancellor and architect of the modern German state, the young von Bismarck showed early promise as a brilliant scholar, but led an exotic life of gilded aimlessness that attracted the attention of the gossip columns from the moment he arrived in Oxford in 1983 and hosted a dinner at which the severed heads of two pigs were placed at either end of the table.

When not clad in the lederhosen of his homeland, he cultivated an air of sophisticated complexity by appearing in women’s clothes, set off by lipstick and fishnet stockings.

Danny and BHK went to see knocked up… both said that I dodged a bullet by going to work instead. Danny gave it a 4. Considering the fact that there were a couple of cute girls in it to ratchet the film up about 2 points, it must’ve really been terrible. BHK gave it a 1, saying that it’s possibly one of the two worst movies she’s ever seen. The two women behind them walked out of the movie, which is what BHK feels that I would’ve done.

I’m surprised; because those are the first two negative reviews I’ve heard about it. Hopefully BHK and I will have a better time with the new Die Hard movie. (or FF2 [even if doom is the weak point], Spidey 3, or Pirates 3, all of which neither of us has seen) It’s been a span since we last saw anything in the theater… Shrek 3, I think. I wouldn’t mind checking out 1408, for that matter.

Danny really enjoyed Shaolin Soccer, however. It is hard to say which he preferred between that and Kung Fu Hustle.
I hope he had a good time while he visited… he sure seemed to, save for a lot of commuting time and that just couldn’t be helped. He was a good sport about some minor tribulations, like the very hot green curry – BHK made some awesome mac & cheese which should obliterate any unhappy mouth-scalding memories. He got on well with BHK and Pye… declaring Pyewacket his favorite cat ever. Newton was a bit gruff with him, suspected so because Danny’s arrival almost always signaled my departure.

I was a little concerned about BHK this morning – between dropping me off at work and dropping Danny at the airport, she was in a minor collision with road debris that flew off of another vehicle – about the size of a hammer, it spun up and under the Love Cube. I’m just glad it didn’t strike her or the windshield.

I’ve come to realise that we have way too many pirate ships all over the place.. They need to be consolidated, sorted and put into some sort of storage system so we can create fleets off the cuff comfortably and with a minimum of space thievery.

Re-inking Thor pool in Flickr. Pretty nifty concept.

I’m thinking of trying Risus with BHK, to introduce her to RPG gaming. We didn’t get to do any RPG stuff while Danny was in town, but maybe next time. BHK and Dan played Hunters and Gatherers, and quite liked it.

Maybe do a mod of LCR , too? With blank dice , maybe.

Pirates was played, but no witch trial. Instead, we opted to watch Kung Fu Hustle, because Danny has never seen it. Dan ended with appropriate fondness for the film. The only side effect is now I want to dance a bit like the leader of the axe gang. Next effort might be to show him Shaolin Soccer, but it might be a little less powerful than Hustle.

Marine Museum on Saturday – Pictures from the sailing time to follow… we had a nice time, but I fear we may have commuted a bit too much for Danny. He tires of travel easily. Clarkes Landing had some good din-din, and wasn’t as pricey as Stoney’s. Danny Loves Aardvark Comics, and would probably be there three times a week if he lived nearby.

On Sunday, we went out to breakfast in Deale, and then did a spot of fossil-hunting (piccies are in the entry prior). We all found a pretty decent collection of Shark’s teeth, beach glass and unusual fossil-matter. Almost went kayaking, but it got too hot. In evening, I won a game of super munchkin, and Danny won a round of pirates.

BHK made some very spicy Thai curry. Green stuff that was oh so hot… I loved it, but I needed a glass of milk to keep the heat bearable as I went. I’ve got a big bowl of it for lunch today, too!

New Slang words in use: Twerp-wad [used by BHK on a bad driver] – I responded by calling the same guy a douche-knuckle, and Danny chimed in with a Son of a Booger.

Saw a Falcon in our yard today… I guess that’s bound to happen when we have so many squirrels lounging about, chasing after peanuts we put out. If any make it, photos will follow.

Sunday’s Auto-transcribed phone message suffered a bit in translation… dark side of being at on the bay with static.

I need to get back into the habit of doing my 7,6,5,4,3,2,1 year ago thing. Once august hits, I’ll have a daily entry for seven years. Harder to stay on top of it these days, but at least I can fold in a quick one-liner or picture about places or things to remember.

BHK and I went down to Solomon’s Island to take a little break. We were going to cruise on the Wm. Smith, but it was already chartered for the day. Instead of lamenting our situation, we opted to do a little river-otter watching and some light nature walk behind the marine museum. The otters were extra-bonus cute and playful today; I suspect that they were really digging the warm weather, and that our arrival right at feeding time had something to do with it. They had a tasty meal of fish, carrot and boiled egg, which sounded pretty darn good, actually, so we toddled off to the Captain’s Table for a little nosh, ourselves. Later we hit Target for a few sundry supplies – another deck chair, some bug spray, etc… and then continued to Game Stop to gather up 2 new (used, $12 each) games – Taiko drumming for the PS2, and Lumines for the PSP – Almost got marvel heroes, too, but they were out of stock on the used ones. (Bhk pointed out that they should give a new one, since it was being portrayed as available on the shelf, but I didn’t want to push – I still have Katamari and Lumines to work my way through)

Far too many pictures of otters, and other stuff will be coming in the days a head, I imagine.

Once we got home, we got a pleasant surprise in a new cover for our grill, along with a nice full tank of propane. I expect to be doing some outdoor cookery in the very near future. Veggie Burgers, Kabob, and whatever meat-stuff the rest of the family might like.

Once the sun came down, we went inside and watched Trekkies – I think it was a little enlightening for BHK about fandom, and why I feel about it the way I do, for both good and ill. I think the highlight of the night was the season finale of ugly betty – lots of cliffhangers in true soap style.

– Secret confession time:
My favorite thing to do by SCottO B. Ear: I love love love to watch a double feature of Joy Luck Club and Steel Magnolias (Although sometimes I swap Steel Magnolias for Fried Green tomatoes). I always need at least 2 boxes of tissues and a whole can of general foods coffee when I do my double feature. I just snuggle under my comforter wearing my comfiest jammies and my furry pink slippers and cry myself a good one. Then I feel much better.

Oh and another confession this morning I compared my wife to a chimp. I reality I’m the one that tends to fling poo—so i retract any comparison I may have made. I’m a naughty bad husband–but a pretty good simian!

Here are some pictures from today’s sunny morning –

I love the boys… They both have come a long way in making the transition to a family.

A new bionic woman, eh? I have my doubts. Rebuilt both legs, one arm, an ear, and an eye this time around. Plus a deaf daughter and Rudy-type doc as a love interest.

Random Ray Bradbury factoid: Bradbury, despite writing about spaceships and interplanetary travel and having lived in Los Angeles for most of his life, has never driven a car. He attributes this to having seen a gruesome car accident when he was young.

Had a lovely night last night – BHK made falafel, (including marinated cukes and feta cheese) along with some really good potatoes with dill for TM, the in-laws and me… it was really delicious. Tina seems a little glum over DR’s absence, but he’ll be along fairly soon for vacation. They all left fairly soon after dinner, and we did some light chores hither and yon both before and after our visitors were at the HQ.

We still haven’t watched Borat… I suspect that it’ll get absorbed into us by next midweek, whenever TM can make it over for more than an hour in front of the TV. (And not watch Dresden )

Still getting used to some aspects of married life – seeing someone lurking (i.e. innocently petting Pyewacket in the living room) around the house in the middle of the night while I’m half-asleep, shutting down for the evening. That makes me yelp, which in turn makes her yelp, leading into a low-end feedback loop of startled-ness for a moment. Flipside, she also makes me break into hysterical laughter fairly regularly. (American Idol the night before last, as an example – I have no idea why I was cracking up so much.)

Had a nice little day out and about, BHK picked up the original SSX (snowboarding) for the PS2 and I got WTF (work time fun) for the PSP. WTF is a very appropriate abbreviation of the game, and I look forward to playing it for quite some time. Swung to Potbelly’s for some sammiches and enjoyed ‘em quite a little bit. The primary objective of our day was the B.I.G. book sale at the old tobacco warehouse – I think that I got more books than BHK this time around. We got there early (after going to bed at about 3am, post-Grindhouse) and the book dealers hadn’t attacked it too roughly yet. I scored a lot of good fill-in Bradbury stuff, and a smattering of Dashiell Hammett and about four of Ian Fleming’s 007 titles. Not found were any of the Harry Dresden books, but I did get the novelized version of the Buckaroo Bonsai movie. Lots of misc from a fundamental magic trick book to Wally Wood / Chas Addams collections of art to a nifty old tome on word origins, as well.

We also saw llamas, and a slug.

Happy Friday the 13th! (all 160 on-screen deaths from the Jason series) Warning, there’s violence. Duh.

0413070853.jpg Friday the 13th! Not so unlucky this time around. Found out that folks can wear jeans on Fridays. BHK caught sight of a nifty talker on the way into work – not sure if the barge or the sailboat underneath will be visible in the final photo that was snapped. (Photo taken at ~ 8am… pink still on the horizon.)

The Calvert county market brought in éclairs for KB and DL to thank them for dial-up. KB was kind enough to share hers with the crew, and it was heavenly. (Also, it was gigantic! One quarter was plenty for a lovely mid-morning snack.)

I plan to take BHK out tonight on a date, in order to celebrate (and deposit) my first paycheck. I’m thinking the classic Dinner and a movie dealio… maybe not grindhouse since it’s 3 hours, 12 min long.

Talkers in miniature (clicken to emgiggen)

Later … Well… Grindhouse was ok. I liked the first half “Planet Terror” just fine, and the previews were cool, but “Death Proof” had a really good core concept, I thought that the implementation was kind of snore-y.

text update – rewind – Another day at work, or another 7 hours, anyhow!

Was told by JD that there might be snow flurries this weekend on Saturday? So much for any roto-tilling or lying down of mulch I might’ve had planned. Hm, that sounds pretty darn domestic. Maybe I can get some studying in for my driving permit. I think that my back is in good enough shape to do so. It’s been over a decade since I’ve done any sort of parallel parking or a 3-point turn, but hopefully it’ll come back to me quickly.

The crew at my current gig is pretty sweet. Everyone seems to get along quite well, and is personable. JD and RD are brothers (25 and 17, respectively) and are very cool. KP digs the icanhascheezburger type sites like I do, and is worried a bit about the CDC’s Cancun hemorrhagic fever warning. DL is an old-school tech – knows his stuff and is on top of his game. KB is my immediate supervisor, and seems to be an amazingly kindhearted lady… Scouting, family oriented. JM got moved to the DB admin gig I was looking to, but I have no hard feelings about that. He knows his stuff, and has been here for 8 months, so they know him. Some recent rough patches in his life… lost his sister last weekend, has been sick, and lost his mother fairly recently as well. I hope the clouds part for him soon. SP is the Network head here, and she has her old painted character figurine from the D&D days… her kids are embarrassed for her, but I think that’s pretty spiffy. She also has 2 orange cats and a black one, so there’s plenty of critter talk there. KE is the sheriff’s sister in law, and is friendly and cracks the occasional joke here and there. WL is in the CAP, and I may join him at local meetings. GIS staff is also nifty, though I haven’t learned all the names over there yet. There are a few people I wave hello to when I pass them in the hall, but I have no idea who they are form the Dept of Aging and the Substance Abuse folks.

A? in the State’s Attorney office looks like Peewee Herman. No, Really.

Bake sale by the SO today – I wonder if the goodies will be as tasty as the Methodist stuff from last week. We still have about 1/8 of a pound cake that we got last go ‘round that will be hard to beat. It’s not too shabby to see Officers wearing bunny ears.

The plant life out here is shucking petals like crazy. It looks like someone spilled a massive pile of packing material and frosted flakes along the sidewalks and gutters… the wind from behind trailing cars or the occasional random breeze makes it fly up and whirl quite prettily. I pity folks with hay fever, however, as the trees are really sexing it up. Speaking of plant-sex, lots of fat, fuzzy little bumblebees are traversing the clover in our side yard lately. I really wouldn’t mind starting a hive out back, just to get some polish on my api-skills. Buzz buzz buzz. A little honeysuckle might be nice to add to the wildflowers around the fence out back, too. Mmm… I do like honey, like all stereotypical bears. (Actually, I’m pretty keen on Berries and pic-a-nic baskets, too, Boo-boo. Fish, not so much – Salmon are safe from me. I prefer Veggie Sushi)

Update – D’oh! I missed getting anything at the bake sale. It only ran from 8:30 to 11am, and I was in meetings or off site during that time. Fortunately, RD brought in doughnuts, so my pastry craving was sated. What will we do with BHK? No cake for her. Perhaps she’ll settle for me making a tasty din-din supplemented with an ice cream sammich for dessert.

BHK and I played the karaoke ps2 American Idol game last night… a lot of fun, more than I’d expected. Apparently, my skills are in the Tom Jones / Kim Karnes / Duran Duran / Everly Brothers arena, while BHK is more of a Billy Joel / Build me up, buttercup sort of singer. I blame my scratchy voice and poorer scores on remaining cough, but that’s just an excuse. BHK is superb at the thing, and I’m just pretty good. We’ll see what practice brings. Perhaps we’ll have a karaoke-off with Tina, Jimmy and Amanda for Easter.

On that note, we’re due for some egg-coloring in the next day or three, and egg salad or deviled eggs shortly thereafter.

Given that there might be flurries on Saturday (mid-20s to mid 40s Fahrenheit forecast), perhaps I’ll skip the sunrise Service on Sunday at the beach. Bay winds after a possible snow seem a bit too brisk for me.

I’m carbo-loading for lunch today. Toasted cheese bagel, some baked ritz-chips and a chocolate pudding snack pack. For the love of the children, why did I skip vegetables? I’ll make a point of getting some apples or grapes for next week.

The region I work in is near an area called Plum Point, but there are no plum trees. Pear, apple and cherry abound, not to mention fields of corn, soybean and tobacco (though tobacco is being phased out, even though it’s a big portion of Maryland history, down to the Calvert County flag). Also, there’s an area called Sam Hill… so now I can ask “What in Sam Hill?” with hope of an actual answer.

Sakes, I’m more of a victim of the 80’s than I thought. The Transformers movie looks really appealing to me. (ninja turtles, not as much, but I still wouldn’t have any problems checking it out on DVD)

I can’t believe that it’s been 20 years since I graduated from high school.

In other media news, there are a few movies out or coming soon that I’m interested in.

Meet the Robinsons will be hard pressed to fail me, because it’s based on William Joyce’s stuff.

BHK seems more enthused than me about blades of glory, but I’m sure I’ll get some good giggles out of it.

The Last Mimzy could be good or it could be dung. I’m going to expect a weak sci-fi flick and hope for it to be better.

Reign Over Me has my same expectations as above. The content will have to be handled well.

The whole getting 18 hours of netflix online a month with my dvd subscription is pretty dang keen, too. Introduced BHK to Red Dwarf, and she seemed to like it.

I fear that I’ll not get as much out of Grindhouse as possible, due to the over-promotion of it. Sort of like snakes on a plane – I think I’m possibly sick of it before I’ve even seen the movie.

8783- 300. what-ev’.

Sooo… I saw 300 with BHK and Tina.

Long story short – I was bored by the movie.

It was a gladiator movie with some nifty visuals… but I feel that maybe I should’ve read the comic first for more appreciation of transfer of scenes to film.

Not sure what I was expecting, but I really got a general sense of ho-hum from the whole thing… I wasn’t engaged at all by the story. Some nifty phalanx action, but that’s about it. I can’t get into the high speed / slow mo combat stylings.

Had supper at Chevy’s – they serve a mountian of food. Not bad, though the Mexico has a better selection of veggie options.

BHK and I saw and *really enjoyed* Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon… much better than I’d thought it would be, and held well to mockumentary and the original subject matter’s convention. I suspect it’s not going to be a huge draw though… lucky we caught it on it’s first and possibly last weekend.

Chris and Larry adopted Tigger last night after a marathon shopping at Ikea. My first time there… I enjoyed the odd named stuff and the semi-corporate weirdness. However, we shopped too long, and I got plumb tuckered out. Young Ms. Tigger seems quite happy in her new abode.

Did the devil just shiver? Or was that the White House?

Congress just passed extensive protection for whistle blowers, including scientists who think their work is being suppressed for political reasons:

The House of Representatives today overwhelmingly passed the Whistle blower Protection Enhancement Act, which would, for the first time, grant federal scientists and contractors the right to expose political interference in their research without fear of retribution. The bill passed by a 331 to 94 vote, with 229 Democrats and 102 Republicans voting in favor.

Yeehaw!

But 94 voted against it. Hmmm. Here’s an interesting little tidbit: not one Democrat voted against this bill. Not one.

All 94 nay votes were from Republicans. All of them.

There are currently 233 Democrats and 202 Republicans in the House. That means 4 Dems abstained, both Independents, and 6 Repubs.

Hmmm.

So this bill had essentially 100% support among Democrats, but only about half of the Republicans.

Hmmm.

Are you a Republican? Did your rep vote against this bill? Maybe you have something to say to them.
