9339 – Sunday –

Spent the bulk of the day moving in our new couch, shelves and end tables – our house is looking more like a home and less like a dorm every day.

Mom contacted me re: my bro – it comes as no surprise (somewhat like agent “!”.) – got to add another link to the mugshot page.

(Agent ! –

Known otherwise only as “Malcolm,” a homeless man who dressed in a garish outfit decorated with exclamation marks (possibly referencing his predecessor, the Quiz) drawn back to reveal his chest is actually a gilded cage containing a miniature jet with bird-like feet. Despite his odd appearance, he “comes as no surprise,” which allows him and anyone around him to be unnoticed or any attacks made by them to be seemingly out of nowhere. He mentions his desire to find the element of surprise, which may mean that his powers of “stealth” are not what he wants; Malcolm finds the element at last when dying during the final battle between the Brotherhood and the government.)

Once we got home, we settled in and watched the cats enjoying all the new surfaces to explore. Newt seems to like the couch and the low end tables, Pye likes the bookcases, and more “cubbyhole” sort of spots. There’ll be more rearranging before the dust has settled, though.

We watched the first half of Astronaut Farmer while eating celebratory Chinese food – food was good, the movie was less than engaging for me.

Worn out, we’re heading to bed early tonight.

9337 – saturday

Went Yard-“sailing” this morning with Tina and BHK – Mostly a bust, but one stop got us a half-dozen unopened buried blueprints puzzles (forgive the ebay link – they’re out of print.), copies of mastermind and upwords, a couple of good books, Max Payne 2 , recipe software, not to mention some other loot that BHK picked up for a total of $8.

I stopped off at the doc’s for shots, bhk and Tina hit wal-mart for some supplies.

After, we hit fab brew, where I got an Italian Soda (cherry), BHK and Tina each got some sort of coffee drink, and then we bounced over to Gallo’s Deli it just opened this week – I got a 3-cheese sub, bhk got meatball and Tina got Turkey & cheese. We’ll be back – it’s pretty average right now, but they’re still getting things in order – it’s no Selby bay sub shop, but they’re three blocks away from the house, and there’s a lot of potential there.

Came back home, crashed out for a nap.

Got up, hung out with the in-laws while they worked the garden, hot dogs, garden green beans and roasted corn for supper! We ate late, and I consumed far too much delicious food.

Watched some National Treasure, Fawlty Towers (drunk chef with a thing for Manuel episode), a moment of the Brothers Solomon (don’t bother) and Army of Darkness.

Scientists think that Mars’ alkaline soil might be able to grow asparagus.

Although he said further tests would have to be conducted, Mr Kounaves said the soil seemed “very friendly… there is nothing about it that is toxic,” he said. “It is the type of soil you would probably have in your back yard — you know, alkaline. You might be able to grow asparagus in it really well.”

That Meme –

Post 3 things you’ve done in your lifetime that you don’t think anybody else on your friends list has done. See if anybody else responds with “I’ve done that.” If they have, you need to add another. Have your friends cut & paste this into their journal to see what unique things they’ve done in their life.

1.  met my wife as a result of livejournal. (and honeymooned by visiting a whole mess of the ripley’s believe it or not museums up and down the east coast – from St. Augustine, FL  to Myrtle Beach, SC)

1. became a vegetarian on the 5th of july, 1990. (still do dairy and eggs – now crustaceans, too. )

2. discovered (after we broke up) that one of my ex-girlfriends was married and had kids the entire time we were romantically entangled.

3.adopted 2 cats, despite a strong allergy to them. (Fortunately, I’m used to Newt and Pye now!)
3. Helped recover hundreds of missing kids and elderly/confused adults (most just wander-offs, but at least six real kidnappings) over the course of three and some years.

Students studying computing in the UK and US are outsourcing their university coursework to graduates in India and Romania. Work is being contracted out for as little as £5 on contract coding websites usually used by businesses. Students are outsourcing everything from simple coursework to full blown final year dissertations. It’s causing a major headache for lecturers who say it is almost impossible to detect.

The irony of course is that if they actually get jobs in the sector, this will be how they actually work anyway.

Another Mummy movie coming out, in two months? I didn’t even know it was being filmed! Looks like no Rachel Weisz though. That’s not really a big loss – I liked her in the first film, but she sort of bleemed out on the sequel for me.

That, and I didn’t hear about the new Blood Bowl game. I’m really out of the entertainment loop lately! At least I can have a good violent Dwarfs vs Lizardmen football combat game before end of year.

9333 – Tuesday

Tomorrow I go to the doctor for a review and another epidural. Hopefully I’ll get a lead on something for my nagging cough.

Went to go see the Hulk movie (I’m sleeping in until 7:30 tomorrow, so I can pull it off) – It was a whole lot better than what I was expecting. BHK liked the movie more than Iron Man, and I am certainly more sympathetic to Banner – I feel that Iron Man was better acted and had better effects, but Hulk was more enjoyable overall – I didn’t mind the CGI Hulk and Abomination at all.

Watched the 2nd episode of Middleman, and it was a lot smoother than the pilot. I’m enjoying it so far.

Nasty thought, resulting from last weekend’s dining out – “Crab dip stuffed crust pizza”. I bet it would make a mint along the Chesapeake… sprinkle a little old bay seasoning on the pie, and I suspect that you’ve got Maryland gold…. and I’ve got a tummy ache just thinking about it.

Joke of the day –

Q.What’s Brown and rhymes with Snoop?

A: Dr. Dre.

Well, BHK thought it was funny, dear journal.

Forget about the joke and just gaze into the eyes of telekinetic monkey. Ooeeeooooeeeoo! I hope he uses his powers for good!

Got this in the mail at work – That’s pretty cool of the building to do for the critters.

The saying is something like: "Don't ever come between a Mother and her babies"

Well, here in Calverton, it's proving to be true. There is a Mother
Eastern Kingbird nesting in one of the trees in the back parking lot (*)
that has felt a little threatened by some of our staff members. She's
even attacked a few staff members. (thankfully, they are OK)

(*)She's in one of the trees at the right of the rear entrance in the
first island that is parallel with the building. Currently, 8:45 a.m,
there is a black truck parked near "her" tree.

PLEASE DO YOUR BEST TO STAY AWAY FROM THAT TREE AREA AND LET HER HATCH
HER BABIES. WE DON'T WANT ANYONE HURT BY HER PROTECTIVE INSTINCT AND WE
DEFINITELY DON'T WANT HER TO ABANDON HER NEST.

Kate Flint did some research and found out some facts about Eastern
Kingbirds:

* The Eastern Kingbird is highly aggressive toward nest predators
and larger birds. Hawks and crows are attacked regularly. A
kingbird was observed to knock a Blue Jay out of a tree and cause it to
hide under bush to escape the attack.

* During the summer the Eastern Kingbird eats mostly flying
insects and maintains a breeding territory that it defends vigorously
against all other kingbirds. In the winter along the Amazon, however, it
has a completely different lifestyle: it travels in flocks and eats
fruit.

* Parent Eastern Kingbirds feed their young for about seven weeks.
Because of this relatively long period of dependence, a pair generally
raises only one brood of young per nesting season.

9331 – Sunday

Forgot to post this yesterday –

0621081520a.jpg
ATW man Crabbing.

First thing we did today was view Swarm of the Snakehead at 1 am, when BHK woke from her Pizza Hut induced torpor “nap”.

We weren’t disappointed. Swarm of the Snakehead was exactly what we were looking for (and didn’t get) when we went to see Grindhouse. A fun, cheesy, “bad in a good way” sort of horror flick. It’s most certainly more a comedy film than horror, despite the periodic moments of gore. I’d love to see this on a large screen somewhere, or better yet as a movie shown outside, on the beach… maybe projected on the side of a large white building.

Head and shoulders above any other made for Sci-fi channel stuff, ten pound would likely do quite well to shop the film to them, or a similar venue.

I may be a bit biased, because it was filmed right nearby, primarily in Easton and Oxford – a hoot picking out local spots.

I can’t believe that Gunnar Hansen was both Leatherface and the “Quint from Jaws”-style Fisherman! There’s range for you!

I think I’ll write up a much longer and nicer review of the movie soon – I want to get some input from BHK about her perspective on the film, too. I’d say it was the highlight of our weekend, though.

After the delightful midnight movie with BHK, we tucked back into bed, and snoozed… I’d say we got up and out of the house by 11ish.

Polished off the last of the croissants from the farmer’s market (I had chocolate, she had almond), BHK decided to venture forth to Aardvark and grab our waiting games. Mike and Tara were out, but the employees were swell to us.

The day was gorgeous and since we wer euntethered by any other family responsibilities (in-laws took tigger to Salem for a long weekend), we meandered around Southern Maryland, looking for a nice new spot to grab some lunch and just enjoy each other’s company.

After much tooling around of St. Mary’s, we eventually ended up at the Reluctant Navigator. After eating there, I understand his reluctance. The food was somewhere between meh and ok. Service, not bad – environment when we first walked in the door was “we’ve made a terrible mistake” but after getting past the foyer filled with old boat motors, chainsaws, and crab traps covered in dust, the clean dining area changed our tune to “oh, this is probably all right.” I’d put the food at medium-low quality. somewhere in the 3-5 out of 10 range. I seriously doubt that we’ll be back, unless something amazing causes us to return.

We continued on our journey, with food in our bellies – after putting some petrol in the tank, we wandered into Cecil’s Old Mill, a general store and post office – pictures to follow sometime after I upload ’em. Meanwhile, check out what somd online has to offer. When I saw the logs in place, I had two thoughts. first – that’s perfect for an old movie villian to strap a maiden to, and let the hero try to save her while he gets away. The second was the gravity gun usage in last night’s HL2.

The old post office was my favorite, though. Lots of memorabilia everywhere.

We bought a pair of homemade brownies and a diet pepsi, and toddled on home, to water our plants right before a huge, thunder-filled rainstorm.

We had tasty sammiches for dinner, and watched our last tivo’ed Monk – where he reunites with his pop. Not a bad character dev show, but a lousy mystery solution. “We found the tie!”

Now, bedtime. Gnitght, dear journal. Have some lovely linkies.

Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds Barbie Doll

Just so you know that your family isn’t so bad, dear journal –

‘Cannibal relatives ate boy alive’

A seven-year-old boy was kept chained in a closet as relatives hacked off pieces of his flesh to eat, a court has heard.

In a case with echoes of the Fritzl family horror in Austria, Ondrej Mauerova was partially skinned in the closet in a cellar at his home in Kurim near Brno, in the Czech Republic, according to reports.

The abuse – involving members of a religious cult – was uncovered by chance last May when a neighbour’s television baby monitor picked up graphic pictures of what was happening next door.

Ondrej and his nine-year-old brother Jakub were locked and chained in the cellar for months by their mother Klara, 31 – a member of a group called the Grail Movement.

He was caged, beaten and gagged to stop him screaming, according to reports.

Mauerova had the monitor installed so that she could watch the abuse from her kitchen but the images were picked up by a neighbour who used an identical system to monitor a newborn baby, the regional court in Brno has heard.

Police were called and the two boys as well as what appeared to be a 13-year-old girl were freed.

But the girl later turned out to have been one of the alleged abusers, 34-year-old Barbora Skrlova.

She subsequently fled to Norway before being brought back to the Czech Republic earlier this year.

Mauerova has admitted abusing her children but she said she had been manipulated by Skrlova and her own sister Katerina.

The accused are Klara Mauerova, her sister Katerina, 34; Barbora Skrlova, 33; her brother Jan Skrla and a friend Jan Turek.

Could someone explain to me how Obama not taking public campaign funds “ruins his credibility”?

Let’s see— today –

Shots! Quick and Easy.

Didn’t get to Aardvark for replacement for Catan Dice, and pick up Illuminati: Crime Lords – probably tomorrow.

Went to Annapolis to go see Zohan – I didn’t realize he was going to be some sort of superhero – more fun than I’d thought- had the requisite Sandler dumbness, but it was pretty cute. A few running gags ran overlong, but it was better than I’d expected. The beginning sort of put me in the mood to see Hancock.

I’m rather saddened to hear that Get Smart is poorly rated (almost as bad as the love guru? Seriously? That bad? I haven’t seen, but can only assume the words fro Guru.) – I hope that Wall-E and Hancock bring something more fun to this summer’s movies. I haven’t seen Indy 4 yet either, but I hope it’s better than the reviews make it out to be.

Pizza at the New Pizza Hut by ATW man – not the best – I think it made BHK sick.

Picked up the mail, and noticed our screener of Swarm of the Snakehead came in! (official site)

BHK and I went down for a nap, she is sleeping heavily. (Still wasn’t feeling well) – I got up after an hour, and did some work on the computer for about an hour, and then played video games for about 3 hours – (Portal, HL2, and some game modsPirates, Vikings and Knights II and Zombie Panic.) 9321 – Monday

Storm knocked a huge limb out of one of our trees – it bounced on the high power lines and then landed on the Element’s hood with a resounding thump. Dented the hood and front end in a few places and spider-webbed the windshield with cracks. I’m just glad nobody was hurt – Larry was fairly nearby. I’ll be interested to see how fast insurance turnaround will be on this. Homeowners should cover it with a minimal deductible.

I’m sort of disappointed that we didn’t get to hit artomatic – the last two weekends got nailed with Father’s day and general germy-ness. Hopefully it did well enough for Cyn to go back next year. It sounded like a hoot!

I want to ride the trolley, before it stops running, too. (I figure it’ll be in commission for at least 18 months more, before it stops working out for the city… but it looks like a good cheap way for BHK and I to tool around town for $0.25 a ride. With gas prices, you can’t get much better than that.

I mentioned this briefly on Saturday – the bakelite tiles in Hive are chunky (maybe 1/2 inch thick, and about 1 and 1/2 inch diameter) – much larger than I’d thought they would be. It’s even mose satisfying to play now, as a result. I’ve gotten so used to tiny counters and maybe things of “checker” size, that the bigger pieces are a real treat. Still waiting on Mosquito‘s arrival – not a huge deal, as BHK and I haven’t really gotten bored of the basic rules at all.

BHK and I played two games last night – If Wishes Were Fishes and Labyrinth. (I won both.) I suspect the dynaminc of Wishes will change if / when we introduce third, fourth and fifth players.

Sex and Indiana Jones?, originally uploaded by kubacheck.

Today, I got sicker, bleah. Pains and stresses at an all time yuck factor.

Watched Old San Fransisco , assorted tv, and slept most of the day. BHK and I took a walk in the sun to try and loosen stuff up for about 45 minutes (or about a mile and a half) and while I think fresh air helps… I was more than ready to go rest afterward. For some reason, our water bottles tasted like onion.

A/C broken – house bounces between 80 and 95 degrees inside, depending on time of day. Fortunately, we have lots of ceiling fans, and the loft has a window-shaker unit, so the kitties, BHK and I won’t bake too badly as long as we stay upstairs.

thinking about my sweetheart, BHK – some savage garden –

Maybe it’s intuition
but some things you just don’t question
Like in your eyes, I see my future in an instant

but I believe…

I knew I loved you before I met you
I think I dreamed you into life
I knew I loved you before I met you
I have been waiting all my life

There’s just no rhyme or reason
Only the sense of completion
And in your eyes, I see
the missing pieces I’m searching for
I think I’ve found my way home
I know that it might sound
more than a little crazy
but I believe…

I knew I loved you before I met you
I think I dreamed you into life
I knew I loved you before I met you

A University of Melbourne team has broken new ground, extracting genes from the extinct tasmanian tiger and bringing them back to life in another living creature.

The team put the thylacine DNA into a mouse embryo in what the university’s Dr Andrew Pask says is the first time DNA from an extinct species has been used “to induce a functional response in another living organism.”

The thylacine DNA reproduced in the mouse’s body and showed biological function, reviving hopes that the tiger may one day be successfully cloned.

Speed Racer and (new Pizza Hut a bust – too new and popular to get sit down seats) went to Selby bays subs – got a tasty veggie – they were hammered at 1pm – too nice a day!

I liked Speed Racer. Colorful, bright, and hit every aspect of the show. It went pretty long – 2:30 is a a bit long for a cartoon, but I dug seeing Pops go old-school wrestler on a ninja, and how well Racer X can fistfight from the comfort of inside his vehicle.

If you’re a fan of the old cartoon, I don’t think it’s possible to be disappointed.

After the movie proper was over, BHK and I were digging the credits.. one of the brusha brusha staff was over-exuberant, and tossed my drink out… they replaced it.. but it was mildly peevish to have them get all up in our business while we were still watching the end bit. 9280 – friday

Netforum meeting all day today. Networking, educational, etc. After a little issue that challenged my urban orienteering skills, I made it with plenty of time to spare. The place was bunker-like, no cell phone or wifi card use could escape the clutches of the building.

Learned a few little details about magnetmail, a lot of good Sharepoint / WSS & MSS stuff, met a lot of excellent contacts, and drank a lot of diet coke.

Notes for next time – don’t bother to wear a tie, bring a laptop for in person review of what’s on the screen during demos.

After work, we hit Iron Man, and it was enjoyable – probably a solid 8/8.5 out of 10 for superhero flicks. BHK liked it, even though she prefers supernatural stuff to gearhead superheroics.

9273 – Friday!

BHK is continuing to make great gastronomic strides with her “meatball” and bean soup. The veggie meatballs got a little crumbly, but they still added excellent texture and flavor to the spicy bean brew. Had more of the salad from yesterday as well, and it was a tasty counterpoint of cold crunchy to the hot and spicy.

Watched the first half of Rataouille (hey! got the spelling in one!) over our supper, and it looks very cute thus far.

Rainy outside… tornado warnings for Calvert and Prince Georges Counties.

Lunch today will be more fajitas and salad – tasty and very healthy.

CCTV boom has failed to slash crime, say police.

Per the always aware flying_blind – “I was surprised to see not only how many Betty Boop cartoons there are in the Internet Archive, but how much other stuff the Film Chest cartoon collection contains. 66 cartoons! That’s like eight hours worth!”

The problem with bio-art is that it’s often made of living tissue — and sometimes living tissue gets out of control. That’s what happened late last week at a New York MoMA exhibit called “Design and the Elastic Mind,” where a tiny living jacket made out of stem cells had to be put to death for growing too fast and trying to burst out of its container.

The art piece was called “Victimless Leather,” and according to The Art Newspaper:

The artists, Oron Catts and Ionat Zurr, say the work which was fed nutrients by tube, expanded too quickly and clogged its own incubation system just five weeks after the show opened . . . Paola Antonelli, head of MoMA’s architecture and design department and curator of the show, says she had to make the decision to turn off the life-support system for the work, basically “killing” it.

Ms Antonelli says the jacket “started growing, growing, growing until it became too big. And [the artists] were back in Australia, so I had to make the decision to kill it. And you know what? I felt I could not make that decision. I’ve always been pro-choice and all of a sudden I’m here not sleeping at night about killing a coat…That thing was never alive before it was grown.

9272 – Thursday-

BHK made a fantastic and healthy supper of bean/spinach salad and spicy stir-fry tofu “beef” and broccoli. Delicious and nicely filling.

Chris and Larry are heading out of town this weekend… and they’re taking Tigger with ’em. No real Mother’s Day things happening this weekend after all – maybe a nice day of painting some pottery, instead?

The latest and greatest version of VZ Navigator (4.0), which tosses in traffic avoidance for 75 cities, along with 3D view plus some other nifty stuff is live right now. (Includes Baltimore and Washington dc!)

I’m looking forward to seeing how solid it is!

Sorry.

Volcanoes spewing lightning? Wizard war, more like.

Speaking of same… I forget if I’ve mentioned it or not, but save for a little too much fanboy junk, I pretty much dig the Dresden files books… but I can’t seem to get into Jim Butcher’s Codex Alera “Horse and Swords” fantasy stuff.

9270 – tuesday OH YEAH!

Spent most of the day shuttling around, getting things in order, both at work and off-site. BHK and I made it home about 7:30, after supper at Ledo’s at about 6. – I ended up famished right around 9pm.. .I guess the small veggie calzone didn’t want to stick with me…. especially since I pretty much had been sans food all day.

Oh Yeah!

Thank you, cardboard graffiti artist, for making tuesday extra fun!

The thought was to go to the movies after my midday stuff, but neither BHK nor myself were really up to it – sort of fragged out and just wanted to get home.

Movies:

Despite all the reviews to the contrary, I suspect that I’ll like Hancock more than Iron Man. More than either of those, I want to see Wall-E.

Indy 4 I don’t have high hopes for, but I’m certainly going to see it if possible. I just want it to be better than National Treasure 2.

We still have netflix copies of Cloverfield and No Country for Old Men – Maybe next weekend for those.

Guys like this, *and* the people he sat in front of are two reasons I don’t like going to movies on opening night. If you don’t like what’s going on, either tell the manager, or leave. Those kids had witnesses and there are cameras in most theaters… his behavior was good at least for an assault charge, maybe battery too. (I’ll leave that to my wife’s legal knowledge.) Add to that that he’s far from a minor, and they were… way to lead by example.

Jailbreak 0.4 is out.. looking pretty sharp! I’ll get to it after I finish the Orange Box and Bioshock. (got ’em both for xmas, but I’m having too much fun doing other stuff to goof single player on the ‘pooter these days!

9264 – Friday

Gentle evening last night – watched 27 dresses with BHK and Chris over supper – gigantic bean salad, with left over zucchini and Thai curry soup. Delicious.

The movie wasn’t bad as far as chick flicks go… The most curious thing to me was that there were no minorities, elderly or babies in the film of note. With the exception of the Girl’s dad, everyone was a white 20-something…and I think of New York being pretty diverse.

I’m going to go from full beard back down to goatee… it’s getting warmer now. Monday will be a fresh week!

Not sure if I like the new icon… I may look a bit too serious here. I wonder how much the tone of my journal has changed?

Has technology made us ruder? Put your stupid phone down for one second and read this to see.

I likely have at *least* twice the mass of most other bodies.

The formula for force: force = mass x acceleration
The formula for momentum: momentum = mass x velocity
The formula for impulse: average force x time

I suspect that I have only about 1/2 the acceleration though, so it likely balances out, force-wise.
