grand theft, lies, vandalism, and Newton’s sonic boom. (to be ceaned up later, just get it out there

Danger the turtle, totally unrelated to the story at handAn eventful couple of days…I’ll work my way through it.

Thursday night, [gleaned via the video camera archives] : one of the bonbon spawn, her eldest, got a phone call…about 7:30 pm. While on the phone, he walks around the back of one of the primary machines, nodding his head, and observing where items are plugged into the back. For the next 15 minutes or so he walks back and forth, periodically looking right into the camera… a nervous look on his face. After his mom left, at about 8pm, we see him come out the side door and then hear the rear door open up a few moments later. A box is placed over the camera to black out anything from being seen. (Ooh… clever! I wonder what secret agent broke in and did that while he was out on a “smoke break”?) Anyhoo, “someone” then smacked the camera, and knocked it, supposedly aiming it up… what he didn’t realize is that the whole laser room was still in the field of vision… there was just less floor, and more roof. Something else that he didn’t know was that two minutes or less after pulling out the hardware key, all production on that machine ground to a stop, as the data was dammed up, forbidden to pass from servers to the Xerox printers. He calls tech support, and they walk him through a checklist of repair possibilities… but he doesn’t work with the computer at all, because he full well knows what caused the problem. He clocks out and goes home, since the machine will have to have Xerox come in and diagnose the “problem”. [End camera 1]

Cut to Friday morning, 6am, Xerox techs come in to evaluate the problem. It takes less than a minute to discover that the dongle is missing, and exactly *when* it was pulled out last night. The only two people working that evening; both of the bonbon spawn. Older “Thief” brother, and younger “Accomplice” brother. By checking the alarm and camera logs on all the doors and possible entrances.. Nobody came or went that wasn’t a child of Bonnie’s. 8:30 am, when the board members tart to arrive, they look at the security tapes and security logs mentioned above. The police were called, and Bonnie and her children were telephoned, and asked to come in. Morty, one of our guys that work in the computer bank in the front with Riker has a big mouth, called and told Bonnie what was up, soon afterwards.

10am, they all arrive, and Thief is pale white, and has the hardware key with him. He returns it, and says “no harm, no foul, right?”

Wrong. That piece of hardware comes with a $15,000 licensing fee. Taking it is grand theft. A felony good for about 15 years in the state of Florida. He also cost us printer and click time from 8pm to 6am during prime printing hours, unknown costs in paying people overtime, Xerox service, and catch-up .The police grilled The three of them almost all day yesterday. Aside from theft, there’s also a vandalism charge.

The Accomplice came through, totally straight with what he knew. I do believe that he had no idea something of that magnitude was going on.

Thief went through a couple of stories. “The system went down, and it was hanging off loosely. I pulled it off to look at it, and accidentally put it in my jeans and took it home. I returned it.. No harm done, right?” *BUZZ* wrong answer! The system didn’t go down until it was yanked out. It doesn’t hang loosely; it’s screwed in with a pair of thumb-bolts. Try again… let’s go to the videotape. And why exactly did you cover the camera up? Uh, I was just goofing around… I didn’t think anything would happen. “Goofing around, by covering up a security camera, and taking hardware off the system, causing it to crash? Sounds like a laugh riot.

He has a wife and a child at home. What kind of idiot throws away his life for swiping a piece of hardware worth $15k?

Right now, it’s unknown if accomplice and bonbon will have jobs on Monday. That has to go before the board. Thief is certainly going to be fired. The board is going to decide about pressing charges. I suspect that if he comes through with who called him, and told him to swipe that part, they’ll make a deal with him to catch either Big Bird or Ex-boss in a bigger suit. (Remember, Big bird is already in trouble for stealing a $4000 piece of equipment, and selling it to ex boss.).

If the big guys can get nailed, I don’t think they’ll have a problem with letting the thief off with just being fired, instead of going off to jail to be anally taken regularly by his cellmate.

We’ll see what Monday brings. Friday night, I tucked in early, worn out from all the Police hubbub and all the noise.
trip to the vet 09/14/02 - Newt got spooked by a dog barking at him, and he rowr'd so loudly that the dog ran away.
This morning, I took Newt to the Vet for his 6 month bordatello immunization and fecal test. I was smart, and went tootsie-roll collecting, and tossed it into a Ziploc bag for them to investigate, so he didn’t need the lubricated bubble wand stuck in his bung. That’s one less stress to add to his list. The immunization consisted of a few drops put in his nose, rather than a shot….he didn’t mind that too much, but wasn’t fond of the vet rubbing his belly and bod for unusual lumps or tumors. (He’s looking good!) His weight is the same as it was six months ago, which is good.. Not getting too fat or too thin.

While standing in the front room, waiting for my ride, Newt in my arms, as sweet as can be…. in comes a guy with a mid-sized cocker spaniel. The thing is a spaz, and starts baking at Newt, loudly and excitedly, jumping about mid-waist height to me. The owner, an older lady was having trouble… she panicked a bit, probably because I told her to reel in her dog rather sharply but quietly. Newt puffs up in my arms, tail straight up and looking like it was electrified, and let out the loudest *RAWRAWRAUUUUUUUUUUUU* at the dog that I’ve ever heard. The dog whined sharply, tossed his tail between his legs and hid behind his owner, and began to cry like he’d been beaten with a two by four… The lady took him to a back room shortly thereafter. Dumb-bully dog. Newt continued to growl lowly until our ride arrived, a few minutes later.

A soon as we got outside the office, Newt relaxed, and got extra comfy in my arms for the ride home. Who knew he could get so fierce? Lesson… I’m quite confident that he could hold his own in a fight, or at least a chest-beating match.

After arriving home, I spent much time playing with the little banshee (who hasn’t so much as given a “mer?” since) on the bed, and he seems perfectly calm and collected.

notes : picture of Danger the turtle was drawn last night… Newt-attack mer was drawn today during laundry.

Good luck this morning… I found $25 dollars in a pack of smokes on the bus. I tossed the Winstons out, and kept the money as a just reward for anti-littering.

Home early, and taking it easy. New duties at work tomorrow…plus meetings about the website. I find out exactly what the duties entail tomorrow too…but I don’t imagine they’re too much fun… sales and the mail shop were bleating about having to do it… and Kev offered our dept… I hope it’s nothing tedious. Kev did mention that it’d only be for a little while…. that sort of softening suggests that it’ll be PITA work. Hopefully, it’s something I can automate programmatically.

Tonight’s book… Starting fresh with Emergence: The Connected Lives of Ants, Brains, Cities, and Software by Steven Johnson, paperback edition. Tony gave it to me just yesterday. Got to dig found lit, given freely. I was interested in it last winter, but my reading queue was already quite full… glad to have it reappear.

Newt’s adorable tonight…curled up in the middle of my Indian-style sitting position. Time to read some non-backlit text, enjoy purrs, the scent of nag champa, and some science. Throw in some snuggly sweetie read-dreaming too, while I’m at it.

See you later, Dear Journal.

Hmm… Why does Newt leaping into the litter box to do his duty immediately after I clean it out crack me up so much?

“Hey! This doesn’t smell like *my potty*! I’d better pee, and then rooster tail a little of the sand! That’s better!” Maybe he likes adjusting the sands, a la a Zen garden… albeit with tootsie rolls after digesting.

He’s been a playful little guy all morning…playing milk ring fetch like a good boy… it really makes me happy when he brings me the ring, and drops it in front of me, out of the blue. I know he digs the quality time with his mamma-pod, and I surely do, too.

Back to Newtie-play. 🙂

An orange cat… I’m not naming names… decided that it’d be fun to get up to snuggle and play extra early this morning.

He’s all tuckered out now, but I’m not ready to go back to bed yet… and it’s too early to go outside for walkies… still rather dark. Brain’s not up to really reading or writing too much at the moment.

Five hours until my ebay auction closes… nobody else has bid on it, but it’s usually not until the last moment that the sneaky-boogers jump in and start sniffing around.

Mild dizziness this morn. Not sure if it’s the groggies from an early rise, or if I’m getting symptoms of Dave’s cold. No other flu-elements yet, so we’ll see what happens. The ol’ noggin doesn’t have all the right marbles in the proper holes at the moment yet.

Well, off to the morning routine. See you in a bit, dear journal.

going out this afternoon….spending midday with Dave.. He’s been bitten by the mage knight bug, so maybe we’ll play some of that over coffee. Who knows? maybe I’ll pick up a few figures and have a fantasy army to whomp on my supers?

I slept like a corpse last night. Long, deep, seemingly dreamless. Russian Sleep… the kind you wake up like rip van winkle, and see the world around you has changed by 300 years. Newt didn’t swab me this morn, or I didn’t feel it… when I did wake, my eyes snapped open, and my mind was clear… no grogginess at all. Very unusual for me.. usually I do a slow five or ten minute “fade in”.

I’m going to remember September 11 peaceably, by not turning on the television that day. That’s the last I’ll probably mention it.

Fun old TV video game commercials… that was my primary market. I admit it… first system? An Atari 2600, with a load of carts… about a year later a guy traded my father an Odyssey2 for some side-work help… jamming family with two game systems… no waiting. 🙂

Cool thing while looking for modeling links – Crash Bonsai is the creation of John Rooney, an artist who is torn between the desire to create and destroy. Recently, he has been making bonsai plants, and combining them with model cars and trucks, which he has creatively smashed and melted, to create “Crash Bonsai,” little living car crash sculptures. I may do something like this… maybe have some heroclix having a happy picnic.

Newton has the uncanny ability to be in the bathtub or sink whenever I have the urge to use it. I think he knows that I’m going to distract him with a milk-ring to attack, before I hop in, and get the water running.

Dear Newton,

… Stop stealing Sabretooth, and hiding him behind the litter box. This is the third time.

Sincerely,
Your loving mother.

Thing learned today-

In 388 BC, Plato went to the court of Dionysius, ruler of Syracuse, hoping to be taken on as philosopher-in-residence. From The Essential Plato by Paul Strathern:

Dionysius was not the kind of man to let himself be cowed by some philosophic nob who was trying to cadge a job at his court. When he and Plato turned to discussing philosophy, the sparks soon began to fly. At one point Plato found himself forced to point out a flaw in Dionysius’ thinking.

‘You speak like a geriatric fool,’ exclaimed Dionysius in disgust.

‘And you speak like a tyrant,’ replied Plato.

Whereupon Dionysius decided to live up to the philosopher’s observations and had Plato clapped in irons. Plato was placed on a Spartan ship bound for Aegina, where the captain was instructed to sell Plato as a slave. ‘Don’t worry, he’s so much of a philosopher he won’t even notice,’ remarked Dionysius… And it wasn’t long before Plato was spotted in the slave market at Aegina by his well-heeled old friend Anniceris the Cyrenaic, who bought him for the bargain price of twenty mina. Anniceris was so pleased with his cut-price philosopher that he sent him back to Athens with enough money to set up a school.

I never knew that.

Until later, dear journal… off to work.

Ahh… long weekend ahead, all my chores are done, and a thunderstorm outside. Looks like I lost power while out to laundry…several thooming bolts from the blue went off a few hours ago, and my VCR’s LEDs are blinking. I probably should get a small ups for the TV and its accessories.

Newt welcomed me home with a loud hello-mer…. I wonder if the thunder spooked him? Quite affectionate right now, so I’m off to lounge and snuggle.

Oh! My brother the entrepreneur decided to use the packing for my computer desk into a nicely lettered sign – parking $5, all day… honk twice. Smart kid… making use of the nearby art festival and his lack of a car to turn a buck.

scotophobia.... not to be confused with scottophobia. Click for a definition to pop up in a new window I suspect it was a spider.
It’s getting dark extra early… the glare was so bright that I couldn’t discern the bus from any of the other assorted miscellaneous trucks on the road until it had practically passed me by. In addition, I got a little tickly sensation on my ankle waiting.. it went away after I’d adjusted my pant leg, but I’m not sure what it was… I have my suspicions, though.

oh, by the way, I beat Dan in combat both times yesterday. I don’t think that’ll happen again… I only have successful tactics vs. him once, and then he learns form his mistakes… fortunately, he keeps me on my toes, forcing me to think up new methods each time. it’s a good opponent who does that.

this is your brain on vb, sql, and c# I had rather a scattered day at work… I had a very real need to just goof off, but had too much work on my plate to do so…even so, I caught my mind wandering quite a little bit. Flights of fancy about the coming Halloween, and plans for this weekend. Some cool happenings this go-round… Las Olas Art Fair (supposedly on of the top 100 in the country.) Though I’m not looking to get any art, the food will be tasty, and the people-watching exquisite… plus all manner of nifty craft window-shopping. I'll be taking my bike... like the picture? I drew it without looking at the palm tablet at all!

Cyndi Lauper free show Saturday 12:30-2pm at the Barnes and Noble by the Galleria…. I’m going to make a point of being there early to get a good seat, and hopefully find a few nice books too while I’m there. It’s going to be an all-acoustic set… I hope that the turnout is of a respectable size, but small. It’d be neato to perhaps get an autograph… I really dug her when I was younger, though I’ve not heard much of her work in recent years… plus, I liked The Goonies and Vibes.

Finally, a woman I saw on the bus… just to polish off my palm piccies. 😉 I don’t think she knew I was doodling her.
she was old, and had a hoodie on... she had a friendly face, though

Well, looks like they’ve gone in for another look. Danny’s got to wait again on this dig.

I’m back, got some pretzels, baby carrots and dill dip, diet coke, Gatorade, and dropped off the mail that needed to go out today.

I’m looking at my heroclix, and thinking that I could custom do a few different figures… it seems a bit rough, but I think that kingpin will be the simplest one to start with for myself…because he’s bald and broad. I may modify a Hercules, too, just to have a kilt. 🙂 Depending on what outfit my sweetie picks, I’m guessing jean grey, or scarlet witch will do the trick for her. I feel that thug will be a good one for my brother, again, because he’s bald, and easy to make a long-haired male figure from. quicksilver is closer to his body-type, though… maybe I’ll use that one, or hydra operative.… I’m going to use the operative for Danny, too… shave off the gun, and paint it more domestic.

For Newton and Blackie.. I’m going to have to get some o-scale cats, or make ’em out of femo. still debating giving Blackie a little mouse or bird on his stand. (Newt’ll have a teeny version of his stuffed tick toy)

Or… I may say the heck with it, after painting the first one.

Some cool props, here.… I really like the pizza boxes… a good prop for the bro. 🙂 and Chinese takeout, for me.

I was delighted to see the Halloween promotions already in full swing… thoughts of cooler nights, happy children, costumes and candy…. that brings a smile to my face.

Autumn’s on it’s way… less than a month to go!

Newt’s wake up patty-pats found me in good humor when I awoke… and we kitty-wrestled for about a half hour before I managed to wear him out. He’s a goof… purrs like a lawnmower when we duke it out.

I need to get a lint brush to pick up his fuzz-droppage off of the futon, though. orange and cream, while complimentary to the forest green of the upholstery, has a high contrast.

Danny just called, and is still at the doctor’s… they’re going to section what they removed, and decide if they need to take more. Meantime, I’m going to make a refreshment run, and get a few minor chores done before he calls back (expected in about an hour.)

interesting development –

one in four employees spend more than an entire workday online each week surfing non-work-related web sites

Until later, dear journal!

Whee! Deadly toys I had as a boy!

Hey… the poem tag project has its own domain now…http://www.poemtag.com/

Route 1 goes by the twelve dragons. Maybe I’ll take a look at that next weekend…maybe pick up an assortment of little plastic dudes. Maybe some Mechwarriors, or Mage Knight figs. Fun to mix it up. I bet that I can get my sweetie into it if I get some that look like gundams.

Practicing the recorder, and it’s officially back… it took a few days to get the fingering back up to speed, but once there, it’s like second nature again. I’m very pleased.

I’m taking this coming Wednesday off to hang out with Dan… He’s having some skin cancers removed in the morning, and I thought it’d be a good thing to help him keep his cheer high, and mind off of his troubles a bit. Plus, I’ll enjoy a little time off in midweek. Bonnie’s program is done, so my only projects ahead of me are regular duties, the web page, and whatever else pops up. I’m hoping that the shakeup in the mailshop isn’t going to be too rough, with big bird leaving.

A year ago, I was telling a pirate joke, abandoning an idea for selectivity on my website and basking in the glow of the touch and thought of my sweetheart. Two years ago, I was telling someone that I’d had my septum removed, and had my blood replaced with instant coffee by aliens.

A plant grows in Mexteca, Mexico, which the natives call the “herb of prophecy.” A dose of it produces sleep similar in all respects to the hypnotic state. The subject answers with closed eyes all questions that are put to him, and is completely insensible. The pathologic state brings with it a kind of prophetic gift and double sight. Furthermore he loses his will and is completely under the control of another. On returning to himself he remembers nothing of what he has done.

-Excelsior Cottager, August 25, 1888

My sweetie’s going to be pleased… looks like she’s going to get some major rain this week, from Tuesday, on. Tonight, I have a soft patter of rain, and it looks like it’ll last out the week, too, sporadically. I’m glad of that…it’ll take care of the plants, and maybe keep things nice and cool. I’m tired of the hurricane andrew retrospectives everywhere… yes, we had a lot of rough weather and hard times a decade ago. Is it worth talking about on the news every night for the last two weeks? Nope! How about a few human interest stories that take place in the now?

ci‘s baby had a *very* cute hello kitty dolly… HK dressed in a little tiger suit. as a side note, HK is 28 years old, having been introduced to the public in ’74. I may have to get the toy for someone ‘peshoo.

I’d like to buy a vending machine to keep at work… I bet that I could make a mint. Something to look into.

I was obliged to put a big “no junk mail” sign on my mailbox yesterday, under my address…. on Saturday, it was *choked* full of pointless flyers and paper-waste. I’m glad that the local PO has rules about that stuff, and listens.

Ah… I see a little kitty that wants to chase a milk ring.

and so, dear journal…

I have a journey, sir, shortly to go;
My master calls me, I must not say no.

Nigh nigh.

Downloading “Run tel dat” for the Island Boy at work. our net connection there is so congested that he can’t run kazaa at any higher than 1.8k (rather than the 106k that the file is streaming at now… It’d be higher, but I’m nabbing other stuff, too.)

/bragging&picking on the company’s net trouble

Newt likes the new table & chairs, a lot. multiple smooth surfaces at assorted heights. Mucho fun to play with, and get different vantage points on potential prey in the house. Deadly Legos, hair ties and army men had better watch out!

It’s fun to watch him.. right now he’s kicking back on top of the futon, and watching animal planet.

Newt & the boob tube
Unless I’ve reactivated cam refresh, that’s him watching “a pet story” .

I want to go to Dragon Con… maybe next year, if I can wrangle Danny or another friend into going with me, and if the guests / games are good.

I could use a good blood bowl fix. (Heroclix has rebitten my miniatures wargaming cravings), and I like to kick snotlings.
