9415 – Saturday

Went to go get shots – no serum, still. Annoying, but I was guessing that might happen.

After the doc bottomed out, BHK and I  pretty much just relaxed for the day. TV, rest, etc. Hung out a smidgen with the in-laws.

Overdone political item of the moment – I really think that it’s already played out, but that the below was pretty comical. Click to enlarge if the text is tricky.

Hey – Red Dwarf is coming back for a one-hour special ? Really? I wonder how much older they’ll all look?

9414 – Friday –

Solid end to the work week – I was fortunate enough to have Chris pick me up at the office door, and take me straight on home.

BHK was there and we had red lentil soup and stuffed eggplant – it was really good, but I was feeling so well… needed a good lie down tonight. The in-laws could tell I wasn’t up to snuff, so they called it a night early.

Dinosaurs I particularly like, but in no particular order – stegosaurus, triceratops, plesiosaur (maybe Chessie ? (and mosasuar ), apatosaurus(or brontosaurus, as I first learned it), ankylosaurus, and utahraptor. If I had a paradox-free time machine, I’d love to visit, or at least view the Late Cretaceous.

I never think about how frickin’ huge the utahraptor was, compared to a human… I always figure it to be one of the tiny dinos… and it is tiny, compared to my other interests.

Well, my thoughts on a woman able to make it to the white house by having to be Republican may be gelling.

I search for a quick look at Ms. Palin’s stances, as I really didn’t know much about her before today. Aside from having some abuse of power issues. It seems that she’s very strongly anti-choice, pro big oil and big mining, supports the aerial hunting of wolves and bears, anti-environment, NRA positive, gay marriage unfriendly, favors teaching creationism in schools. Guess which stance I’m in agreement with, dear journal? (Hint: it’s the above the dividing line, and talks about dinosaurs being gigantic. I don’t agree with any of those policies she happens to have. )

I’m not really all that worried about it hitting the election’s results by much one way or the other – I suspect this will help perhaps a little bit for the dems, save for a fringe group of people that absolutely, positively have to see someone in office because her genitals are different than any other veep in history. (that we know of…. I’m talking to you, Elbridge Gerry and John C. Calhoun… I’ve had my suspicions.)

She just asked "What exactly does a vice president do?", on CNBC. A fair enough question I guess… but…

Joe Biden: "Governor Palin, I served with Dan Quayle; Dan Quayle was a friend of mine. Governor, you’re no Dan Quayle."

Neither VP lights my candle. Palin (a self-admitted creationist) nor Biden (a proponent of stronger police powers)

Well, no matter what happens this election, *something* new and unusual is going to happen. However, despite my issues with Obama – he is still the one I’ll vote for, given the available candidates. If it were John McCain of the 2000 election, I’d be more shaky, but given McCain’s recent right-wing pandering actions… AW *hail* NO. Defective Yeti agrees with my feeling there.

9411 – Tuesday

Work is getting back to paces – looks like we’ll have a few very solid weeks of care to deal with up ahead. I’ll take my replacement day off at that point.

Not too many people to socialize with out here, and when they are available I’m pretty busy. After this primary project has been done, I can get back to visitors and whatnot.

BHK made tasty sausage (tofurky italian sausage for me) and veggies on whole wheat spaghetti with garlic bread. Yummitty yum yum! More tomorrow for lunch, and that’s fine by me!

Middleman tonight was fun – I don’t blame the aliens at all for minding our intrusion, and it was nifty seeing inside Ida’s noggin.

Joe Biden’s pro-RIAA, pro-FBI tech voting record

By choosing Joe Biden as their vice presidential candidate, the Democrats have selected a politician with a mixed record on technology who has spent most of his Senate career allied with the FBI and copyright holders, who ranks toward the bottom of CNET’s Technology Voters’ Guide, and whose anti-privacy legislation was actually responsible for the creation of PGP.

That’s probably okay with Barack Obama: Biden likely got the nod because of his foreign policy knowledge. The Delaware politician is the chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations committee who voted for the war in Iraq, and is reasonably well-known nationally after his presidential campaigns in 1988 and 2008.

In what could possibly be a major blow to a scientific consensus that has held for decades, recent research suggests that the traditional conception of Neanderthals being “stupider” than Homo sapiens may in fact be misleading. As articles about the research findings state, ‘early stone tool technologies developed by our species, Homo sapiens, were no more efficient than those used by Neanderthals.’ The data used in the study is available on-line along with a visual description of the process used.

Dan sent us a pile of stuff after cleaning out his guest room. A boatload of books, a few dvd’s:Batman Begins, King Kong – the newest one, Quest for Fire, Razor’s Edge, Life aquatic – and a copy of Valley of the Mammoths – looks to be a good game, but he couldn’t play it at the school’s game/SciFi club due to some of the caroon cavemen having visible genitalia. (He offered to draw clothes on them with a sharpie, but the students prefer Catan and Aquarius anyway.

His loss is our gain!

To me, tabletop games are a form of entertainment; I play to play, not play to win. I prefer light games that are amusing in and of themselves, games that are pleasing to play and offer something besides the chance to earn victory. Sometimes I’m in the mood to sit back and watch math at work, sometimes I just want to push pawns around and chuck some dice, and sometimes I want to claw my way to the top of the heap. Abstracts, beer-and-pretzels, RPG, wargames… I’m not picky, so long as it’s a fun ride.

I just found out that x1650 is the bare minimum of game cards for the next generation of goodies coming out this year. I gout rid of the x1600 just in the nick of time, it seems! I don’t want anything to make it hard to run spore or fallout 3. (Or ghostbusters, when it someday comes out. )

Random Scotto factoid – I can chug soda or beer at an alarming rate. That is part of why I don’t drink beer with any regularity.. it takes more than one to even begin to quench my thirst.

I sorta-kinda want to live in a styrofoam dome home. (at least as a little place or cabin out in the wilderness somewhere as a second home.)

Maryland Renaissance Fest is coming up. I figure we’ll go again, probably for one weekend, this time to just people watch, if nothing else. Scottish Weekend might be fun.

Got a postcard from the bro. He sounds better when he’s sobered up. I’ll be writing him sometime between tomorrow night and this weekend. It breaks my heart every time I think of him… I thought I was mostly over it, but I’m really still fairly tender about it at times. If luck enters the picture, maybe he’ll get some good, solid treatment, but I won’t get my hopes up.

9360 – Wednesday –

So, midweek again, is it, dear journal?

Not much to talk about, save for a tasty thai-style currey cabbage soup courtesy of BHK. Very, very tasty!

Wha? Belgium’s government collapsed yesterday, and I didn’t hear anything about it? I don’t know why it strikes me as so bizarre – you hear about Russian and African nations going under all the time. Belgium seemed so.. I don’t know… stable? I wonder how long before the Hercule Perot jokes start rolling by… or more likely, How Budwiser beer becoming Belgian took down the whole country.

BRUSSELS, Belgium (AP) — Belgium’s government collapsed Tuesday, unable to resolve an enduring divide over more self-rule for the country’s Dutch and French-speakers. The gap was so wide the premier suggested the end of Belgium as a country was looming.

King Albert II immediately began political discussions with lawmakers to try to resolve the situation, talks expected to take several days. He did not formally accept the resignation of government offered by Premier Yves Leterme late Monday, so Leterme’s government stays on in a caretaker capacity for now.

In an unusual declaration, the premier said Belgium’s constitutional crisis stems from the fact that “consensus politics” across Belgium’s widening linguistic divide no longer works.

io9 nicely sums up why I like middleman.

Another one of those quiz / memes those kids are all doing these days.

1) In five words, explain what ended your last friendship?
stress and poor diplomacy skills

2) How was your prom night?
Skipped it – hung out with friends elsewhere, instead. I was pretty anti-establishment paired with shy.

3) Do you have any famous relatives?
We all do, if you go far enough back! Seriously… I’m from assorted Bavarian and Russian stock. Maybe the most famous and immediate living relative is Peter von Berg. Ever hear of him, dear journal? Thought not. He’s been in in lots of stuff, though I’ve never met him in person. See yesterday’s entry about more distant relatives of fame. I guess it’s not really fame if you’ve never heard of the guy.

4) Have you taken out loans to pay for college?

Nope. I did it “the hard way”. However, I have no student loans of my own to pay off now.

5) What did you receive last in the mail?
Part of BHK’s birthday present!

6) What beverages have you drank today?
Iced Tea, Water, diet cherry pepsi, lemonade/iced tea mixed

7) Do you leave nasty messages on people’s answering machines?
Not as a rule, no. I often don’t bother leaving a message, though – most of my friends are bad about voicemail checks, and prefer to call me back without listening to it, anyhow.

8) What’s the most painful surgical procedure you’ve had done?
Back surgery was probably the most extended and painful, though it helped more than my back hurt prior.

9) What is out your back door?
Our back yard, garden, possibly a turtle, lots of frogs, maybe a little tuxedo kitty wandering around, assorted finches, cardinals, and jays and fence-gate leading to the world beyond.

My initial answer was smart-alec-y and inspired by CCR:

There’s a giant doing cartwheels, a statue wearin’ high heels – look at all the happy creatures dancing on the lawn!
A dinosaur Victrola list’ning to Buck Owens, tambourines and elephants are playing in the band.
A flyin’ spoon and a wond’rous apparition provided by magician.

10) Do you usually go out on the weekends?
It seems that we at least visit family one of the days. Staying in happens, too. We generally get a little air on Saturday mornings, at least.

11) Do you like what the ocean does to your hair?

I don’t really worry about it either way… if it knotted it in cornrows or shaved it all off, I’d be more concerned.

12) Have you ever visited a planetarium or do you even know what one is?
Many times… I like them when they have comfy seats and good a/c on a summer day.

13) What is your favorite flavor of pudding?
I’m pretty much a chocolate fan. I don’t know if there’s a commercially available pudding flaver that I dislike. Pistachio, Butterscotch, Banana and vanilla are all fine by me.

14) Describe your keychains:
outside of keys and rings, there’s a piton, an assortment of barcode fobs for store discounts (hair cuttery, Calvery county library, casual male, winn dixie, cvs, giant and ace hardware), a mini flashlight, a usb drive, a tiny maryland snow globe, remote of the locks on the element, and a universal tv remote.

15) Where do you keep your change?
In my left front pocket, or in a big plastic utz pretzel jar by my desk.

16) When was the last time you got up and spoke in front of a large crowd?

How large is large? About 25 people at the last employee meeting – maybe a week ago?

17) What kind of winter coat do you have?
double coat… a heavy outer one with a polyfill inner quilted.. one can be zipped into the other on very cold days.

18) What was the weather like on your graduation day?
Sunny and mild. I did not attend my graduation. I got my diploma and moved on. (see prom, #2 above)

19) Do you sleep with the door to your bedroom open or closed?
Open – Newton and Pye like to roam the house unhindered.

20) Is there anything purple within 20 feet of you?
A plum-colored chair is to my rear left, about 5 feet from me.

21) What is the strangest thing you’ve put in the microwave?
Grapes, or marhmallows.. grapes are more interesting.

22) Can you speak any Japanese?
I know some words, but nothing serious. Some foods, greetings and such.

23) Do you look good in the color yellow?
I do ok… I prefer cooler colors- blues, greens, etc.

24) Do you spit or smoke?
Nope and nope. also, yuck, and yuck.

25) What is your favorite color(s)?
Rust / Orange – Forest Green

26) Ever played an instrument?
Baritone, Tuba, Sousaphone, Recorder, a smidgen of Alto Sax – Learning the Bass Guitar and Uke when I’m not procrastinating.

27) Do you believe in Bigfoot, or Sasquatch?
I suspect the Yeti and suck xeno-kin are unlikely, but remotely possible. If you would like to hire me to pursue him, I’d be happy to be a bigfoot hunter for the rest of my life, or until I find one, whichever comes first.

28) Ever been to a palm reader?
Not professionally. I’ve had readings from hippie friends and such.

29) Did they tell you the truth about your future?
I don’t know! My future hasn’t happened yet! Nothing they forcast has occured yet, to my knowledge.

30) What are you thinking about at this very moment?
I was feeling a little out of sorts today. I wonder why? Sort of a free-floating malaise. I started feeling better this evening than I did this morning and last night, then got worse, and now I’m better again. I’d really like to pop the hood of my brain and see what’s in there without all the subconscious stuff clouding issues. I feel sorry for any mentalist rummaging around in my briain – the mind is organized but a lot of clutter in there, too.

31) Have you ever received a black eye?
Yup – from fists and inanimate objects.

32) What is your biggest current disappointment?
That there are only 24 hours in a day… lots of stuff to do, but for fun and for life improvement.

33) What are some of your favorite drinks?
Sun tea, Arnold Palmer (lemonade mixed with iced tea), diet cream soda, diet cherry vanilla dr pepper / diet cherry pepsi

34) Do you have anything that hurts on your body at this time?
Let’s see.. a quick mental spot check for pain. In varying but low levels – left ankle, left knee, middle back, right hip, base of neck, behind left eye. Most of the pain is very minor at the moment, like a muscle ache or nerve pinch. No agony.

35) Have you ever ridden in a taxi?
Many times. I prefer the water taxi to any on land.

36) What is the last alcoholic drink you had?
A pair of raspberry ciders last weekend, with the dagwood sammich Yummy!

37) Did you do anything special last night?
Spent time home alone with BHK at dinner and watched Middleman… doesn’t get much better than that!

38) What is your very favorite food?
Heck if I know! I’m currently in the mood for Joss sushi, just because I’ve not had it in a long while. I lean towards Americanised “Fusion” versions of Mexican, Thai Curry or Japanese food. If I had my druthers, I’d go for a tempura veggie roll with some peanut sauce tossed on right now.

Another week draws to a close. I forgot to mention yesterday that we went to the Octagon on the way home from work to pick up an egg roll for bhk (and spring rolls for non-pork me) – I don’t know why folks are so leery of the place – it’s as clean as anywhere else – much better than mall chinese food.

I do like that it’s a “Fried Chicken / Chinese Food / Liquor Store”. (note to self- add it to yelp)

Sometimes I catch myself, looking at some folks I’ve tripped over on the internet, and want to tell ’em to stop being creeps. But for them, that’s why there is an internet… because if they acted like that in the flesh, they’d be in an ICU somewhere, or worse.

It seems that now that Obama has the nomination from the Left, he can pretty much as Right as he wants, as long as he’s not quite as far Right as McCain.

I read this blog post, and I think it sums things up. Also, I just read that Obama voted in favor of a wiretapping bill.

Say what I may about Hillary, but at least she stood up for our civil liberties in that vote. Barack Obama did not, after promising us that he would. I am very disappointed in him right now.

Seeya, 4th amendment.. it’s like I hardly knew ye.

The odd thing to me is that McCain abstained from voting on it at all. I wonder why he didn’t go one way or the other?

So, do I want kind-of right wing, or full-bore? As always, I don’t want any of the candidates.

Watched Be Kind Rewind tonight. It was a little ragged around the edges, but we both really liked it a lot. It reminded me a bit of the old movies that Steve Jacoby, Brent Ashland, Kevin Albury, Kevin Cummins, etc. and I made with Brent’s video camera… Raiders of the Lost Sock, the Arthurian Project, and so on.

We have so many leftovers in the fridge that it is potluck night in Casa de von Berg. I opted for a blend of baked ziti and veggie lasagna, while BHK had sausage and veggies. There was much nom nom nom’ing.

Rob Richards has made a great site where he restores old animation backgrounds.

I think I’m just jealous because she has almost no cavities (only one small tiny cavity that she just got recently—probably from kissing my sugary mouth)—I’ll make her a rot-mouth yet! In the first case to review the government’s secret evidence for holding a detainee at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, a federal appeals court found that accusations against a Muslim from western China held for more than six years were based on bare and unverifiable claims. The unclassified parts of the decision were released on Monday.

With some derision for the Bush administration’s arguments, a three-judge panel said the government contended that its accusations against the detainee should be accepted as true because they had been repeated in at least three secret documents.

The court compared that to the absurd declaration of a character in the Lewis Carroll poem “The Hunting of the Snark”: “I have said it thrice: What I tell you three times is true.”

So, how many human rights advocates are going to boycott all of the sponsors of the 2008 Summer olympics in Beijing ?

Numerous human rights violations have taken place in China because of the Olympics, according to an Amnesty International report. In 2006, Beijing implemented a detention without trial scheme called “Re-education Through Labor” which targets people who have committed minor offenses and are forced to work long hours and can be detained for 4 years. Concerns over the games also include the potential for boycotts from pro-Tibetan organizations such as Students for a Free Tibet as well as from organizations such as Amnesty International upset with China’s involvement in the crisis in Darfur.

Biggest tricks for me to avoid would be be –

Johnson and Johnson – very big company – not sure if we could dodge every tendril. I can rattle off at least 5 of those items in our home right now.

GE – everywhere, also owns a ton of stuff – (including TiVo, Universal Studios, and USA network, home of Psych)

Coca-cola – everywhere, but avoidable if you take note of what you’re drinking, including water.

Visa – well, that’s my bank’s debit card, and almost every place on the planet takes it… so, unless I want to live and trade with cash-only businesses, that’s a deal breaker. Too big to defeat.

Items of little to no difficulty –

McDonalds – not hard for me to miss out on – we only ever go for shamrock shakes or pumpkin at halloween. Easily avoided.

Samsung / Panasonic – easy peasy. I get 99% of my electronics from other sources, though our tv is a samsung right now.

VW? Awww… you guys let me down. Would I have to boycott playing punch-buggy?

Adidas – no problem missing out on them.

UPS – I do use them on occasion, but there are alternatives.

Snickers, Tsingtao, and Budwiser – I can do without all of those.

Kodak – plenty of other options there, too, but they’re in a lot of places. depending on the extremism, some might want to forego any book that used kodak photography or processes. Movies, etc. They are teamed with Motorola and Lexar, for that matter.

Who can say? I won’t be that extreme, but sometimes I feel that I should.

‘Zero’ chance lottery tickets stun some players – Through a request filed under the Freedom of Information Act, Fishwick’s firm was able to obtain records that showed the Virginia State Lottery sold $85 million in tickets for which no top prize was available.

9345 – Wednesday

I added a new video card to my amazon wish list – my old one is just that… getting old.

I still don’t know what to get BHK for her Birthday next month. Tricky when we’ve already got the bulk of our hubbub out of the way now – she doesn’t really want for furniture or jewelry or books…. I suspect I’ll have to take a slightly different tactic.

Folks in the lunchroom today were making claims that “USA torture isn’t as bad as foreign torture” – Isn’t that splitting hairs? Drowning to get info someone isn’t torture?

Light supper tonight – tube and cool dinner on the love couch. Some pre-emptive fireworks being launched by the neighbors.

DevilPlay.de is a free German online gaming site that features a handful of solitaire, arcade-style games as well as three multiplayer games. While two of those titles are Vier Gewinnt (Connect Four) and Revello (Othello), the other one is Ingo Althöfer’s fascinating EinStein würfelt nicht!.

Bonus mini-review – The goal of the basic two-player game is simple: Get one of your stones to the opposite corner or eliminate all of your opponent’s stones by landing on them. Your six stones are numbered 1-6, and on a turn you roll a six-sided die and move the stone with that number or the stone closest to that number. Movement is always toward the opponent’s goal.

More news from my neck of the woods –

PRINCE FREDERICK, MD – In the middle of the afternoon on Sunday, Police were called to the Rite Aid in Prince Frederick for a theft. According to a press release, at 3:45 p.m. an employee of the store called police to report that an unknown suspect stole more than $1100 worth of electric toothbrushes from the store.
The employee described the thief as a medium build white male. The reports states that the man filled two baskets with the items and then fled the store. His getaway was achieved with a green Ford Thunderbird, however, the store’s surveillance video was able to record the suspect during the broad daylight theft.
Deputy Seth Mitchell is continuing the investigation.

We have blooms on our rose bushes – it appears that we have tea roses instead of the regular large sized ones… but BHK seems to be ok with that.

If being captured and tortured makes you ready to be president, there’s a whole Guantanamo full of candidates the Republicans haven’t even considered.

I’m actually a bit fearful of McCain winning. I shouldn’t be, but I was burned by Kerry and Gore, both of which I’d have thought had it in the bag.

Dave’s trying to put me at ease – I hope he’s right. (Though I am annoyed about Obama’s recent campaign actions, too – the aforementioned Supreme Court tossing the D.C. gun ban / Obama’s faith based initiatives / pandering like flags on lapels and “values” as part of a campaign ads.)

Ray Harryhausen turned 88 a couple of days ago – I thought he had passed on. I’m glad I was wrong.

Looks like our condo issues are about up, now. The new management company has contacted us, our bill to be paid actually has an itemized list we can agree with, and it should be smoother sailing as far as that building is concerned.

I’m often surprised when I meet people who are… well, to put it in gaming terms, “built on a lot more or a good deal fewer points” than me. I keep myself in the thought of “everyone is created equal”, but it’s really just not true. I’ve met a couple of people that are practically super-heroes, and pulp-style doc savage types, at that. (I worked with his opposite number at the library, years ago, too) Here and there I come across a person who is amazingly put together – talented, good-natured, physically, socially and mentally fit. Granted, it’s not often that this happens – I figure most people have at least one or two attributes that are at least along the mean, if not sub-par. Then there’s the other side of things… someone who is neither kind to the eyes, particularly intelligent, healthy or easy to get along with. How did they get such a short end of the stick?

I know it’s a pipe dream, but shouldn’t everyone be beautiful and ugly somewhere obvious after talking to them for a moment or thirty? When I get blindsided by folks falling on one side of the bell curve or the other, I have this need to find something contrary to the rest of the model… and I get a little distressed if I can’t spot the hidden flaw or silver lining of the cloud. I know it won’t always be obvious, like Hawking’s mind trapped in his body (or Anna Nicole Smith’s Body [at prime] trapped containing its brain.) Those two aren’t the best examples as I’ve never met either before, but I suspect that they’re fair ones.

I think that the first thing most gamers do when given a system of measuring certain skills and abilities is to build themselves, just to see where they stand. (or, if you’re extra goofy like I am, you’ll do your whole game group, and then compare notes.)

Last night, while watching Astronaut Farmer – Chris asked if the main character was going to die. My answer of “yes, eventually” was not well received.

Ten original designs have been submitted in the 8th Icehouse Game Design Competition, and anyone willing to rank at least two of the ten designs is welcome to serve as a judge. The deadline for judging is July 18th. For details on judging, as well as links to all of the designs, head to the Icehouse Game Design page. (I don’t have any entries this time, but Logger looks fun, at least in theory, as does Ambush.)

I most certainly prefer German-type boardgames (somewhat abstract, largely non-confrontational, and relatively short in playing time), rather than American-style (games that are heavy in theme, aggressive, and requiring an entire evening to play.)

That said, I think we’re going to slow down on our game purchases now – our closet is pretty full. I’d like to trot out a few games for the 3-4th of July time off, especially since we’ll have Alan, Jesus, The Mama, Chris, Larry, BHK and me available to play, plus the possibility of Tina and Matt. I suspect it’ll turn into Apples to Apples fest, but I’d like a few other 3+ player games to get a workout then too… maybe Witch Trial or Super Munchkin would be fun and easy enough for a bigger crew… I’d even like to see a mob-sized Carcassone H&G game.

Other Possibilities are Clue, Aquarius, and Fluxx (Zombie, eco, family or regular… or a mix!)

I doubt we could get ’em to do Chrononauts. That’ll be for when Amy comes over. BHK and I love it, but the gang might not be into the learning part. (same for Crime Lords or Arkham Horror )

We could play Werewolf if we get at least 8 people that want to play. It’d be better with 13… I wonder where Adam, Eric, Jimmy and Joe will be this weekend?)

Speaking of Gaming –
Game Table Online is moving from subscription-based play to free, open gaming for all users as of July 1. (Lord of The Fries ! Kill Dr. Lucky !

“…even if tomorrow we opened up every square mile of the outer Continental Shelf to offshore rigs, even if we drilled the entire state of Alaska and pulled new refineries out of thin air, the impact on gas prices would be minimal and delayed at best. A 2004 study by the government’s Energy Information Administration (EIA) found that drilling in ANWR would trim the price of gas by 3.5 cents a gallon by 2027.”

That Meme –

Post 3 things you’ve done in your lifetime that you don’t think anybody else on your friends list has done. See if anybody else responds with “I’ve done that.” If they have, you need to add another. Have your friends cut & paste this into their journal to see what unique things they’ve done in their life.

1.  met my wife as a result of livejournal. (and honeymooned by visiting a whole mess of the ripley’s believe it or not museums up and down the east coast – from St. Augustine, FL  to Myrtle Beach, SC)

1. became a vegetarian on the 5th of july, 1990. (still do dairy and eggs – now crustaceans, too. )

2. discovered (after we broke up) that one of my ex-girlfriends was married and had kids the entire time we were romantically entangled.

3.adopted 2 cats, despite a strong allergy to them. (Fortunately, I’m used to Newt and Pye now!)
3. Helped recover hundreds of missing kids and elderly/confused adults (most just wander-offs, but at least six real kidnappings) over the course of three and some years.

Students studying computing in the UK and US are outsourcing their university coursework to graduates in India and Romania. Work is being contracted out for as little as £5 on contract coding websites usually used by businesses. Students are outsourcing everything from simple coursework to full blown final year dissertations. It’s causing a major headache for lecturers who say it is almost impossible to detect.

The irony of course is that if they actually get jobs in the sector, this will be how they actually work anyway.

Another Mummy movie coming out, in two months? I didn’t even know it was being filmed! Looks like no Rachel Weisz though. That’s not really a big loss – I liked her in the first film, but she sort of bleemed out on the sequel for me.

That, and I didn’t hear about the new Blood Bowl game. I’m really out of the entertainment loop lately! At least I can have a good violent Dwarfs vs Lizardmen football combat game before end of year.

Could someone explain to me how Obama not taking public campaign funds “ruins his credibility”?

Let’s see— today –

Shots! Quick and Easy.

Didn’t get to Aardvark for replacement for Catan Dice, and pick up Illuminati: Crime Lords – probably tomorrow.

Went to Annapolis to go see Zohan – I didn’t realize he was going to be some sort of superhero – more fun than I’d thought- had the requisite Sandler dumbness, but it was pretty cute. A few running gags ran overlong, but it was better than I’d expected. The beginning sort of put me in the mood to see Hancock.

I’m rather saddened to hear that Get Smart is poorly rated (almost as bad as the love guru? Seriously? That bad? I haven’t seen, but can only assume the words fro Guru.) – I hope that Wall-E and Hancock bring something more fun to this summer’s movies. I haven’t seen Indy 4 yet either, but I hope it’s better than the reviews make it out to be.

Pizza at the New Pizza Hut by ATW man – not the best – I think it made BHK sick.

Picked up the mail, and noticed our screener of Swarm of the Snakehead came in! (official site)

BHK and I went down for a nap, she is sleeping heavily. (Still wasn’t feeling well) – I got up after an hour, and did some work on the computer for about an hour, and then played video games for about 3 hours – (Portal, HL2, and some game modsPirates, Vikings and Knights II and Zombie Panic.) Tossed a little Bioshock in for good measure.

I still feel pretty-lousy, but went in to work – too much needs to be hands-on today – meetings, etc.

My shoulder muscles and ribs / stomach are all especially tender from the coughing. I’m being extra lazy with my entries until I feel more up to speed.

BHK made pizza tonight… I had two slices of green pepper and cheese. First real food eaten since Sunday. It was delicous, but I couldn’t consume more than that… or any pie for fear of retribution.

I can’t imagine a homemade blueberry pie lasting a week in my house. I must’ve been terribly sick, indeed.

Three stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame have gone to the dogs, so why can’t Cheeta the chimp get some love? The animal actor, whose credits include the 1967 comedy “Dr. Doolittle” and the “Tarzan” movies, is trying for the seventh time to get a sidewalk star and become the first monkey to get the honor. His handlers have launched an online petition to get supporters to urge the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce to give him a star in 2009.

The 76-year-old chimp, who the Guinness World Records has called the oldest living, non-human primate, is retired and lives in Palm Springs. Cheeta also has a MySpace page. (see also – http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/GoCheeta/ )
