Moment of Lyric – Nelson Sings Nilsson

In 1969, Harry Nilsson and Randy Newman joined forces to record”Nilsson Sings Newman,” a gorgeous, minimalist collection of Newman songs sung by Nilsson (obviously).

In 2001, as his band, Harvey Danger, broke up, Sean Nelson became deeply enamored of “Nilsson Sings Newman,” and considered that “nelson sings Nilsson” would be a funny title for a record.

Bro woke me up last night, right as I’d hunkered in for sleep. I wished him a happy birthday, and he tried to get me to buy pizza or chinese for his whole crew at the hotel he’s staying. I declined, and suggested some other options. He’s back with Shannon, and thinks that she is probably pregnant. A bad idea, as neither he nor she is able to raise a child in their current mental, physical and financial situation. He turned 34 yesterday, and is still living moment to moment, catching a hotel room here or sleeping in his truck there.

He adds a bitter flavor to the bulk sweetness in my life right now. It figures he’d wake me up on a night that I was trying to get some extra snoozles.

Went with some work crew to outback for feed – it was yummy, as usual… pasta and a bloomin’ onion. Work was discussed only minimally, which is nice.

Heard from Vicki last night – getting together with her and some of the old gang a week from tomorrow for a little supper. Apparently, most have gone on to other non-profits: Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, American Lung Association, Kids in Distress, and Boys & Girls Clubs. Nice to see good folks working to help make the world a better place.

8330 – Guten Drudennacht! Time for der Hexen-Orgie!

We’re directly opposite of Halloween at this point. The season started with Candlemas / Groundhog’s Day has come to an end.

May 1 marks the final victory of Spring over Winter, but before departing, the witches and their cohorts have one last fling. The night from April 30 to May 1 is called “Walpurgisnacht”, the night of Walpurgis or Walpurga. The festival is marked by numerous rituals to ward off evil. Legend has it that on Walpurgisnacht the witches would gather on the Brocken, the highest peak in the Harz Mountains. Because of the Walpurgisnacht scene in Goethe’s Faust, in which Mephistopheles takes Faust to the Brocken and has him revel with the witches, the witches gathering became widely known.

Under Christian influence Walpurgisnacht became a fest to drive out evil spirits. Walpurgis derives its name from Walpurga or Walburga. Walburga, Abbess of Heidenheim near Eichstätt, a Catholic Saint, was known as the protectoress against witchcraft and sorcery. On the Eve of May 1, bells may toll in some areas and prayers may be said; there may be blessings with holy-water and blessed sprigs can be found in homes and barns. The most widespread remedy against evil spirits during Walpurgisnacht is noise. As soon as the sun sets, boys of all ages may make noise. Their equipment ranges from boards to beat onto the ground to pistols for firing shots.

In Bavaria the night from April 30 to May 1 is called a Freinacht or Drudennacht. For youth it is an opportunity to play tricks. They may stroll in groups through the streets and wind toilet-paper around cars, smear door-handles with tooth-paste, unhinge garden doors and carry them a few meters away, and they may displace shoe scrapers. It is said that at one time boys took a sparred-frame cart to pieces and reassembled it on the roof of the house of the owner.

May 1st marks the victory of Spring over Winter, but before departing the Hexen have one last fling and make an attempt to assert their power on Walpurgisnacht. This Hexennacht is the best known in the seasonal cycle. The roots for this fest extend back to a pre-Christian Frühjahrsfest, which was perhaps celebrated in an even more rowdy fashion, as the Valborgs maessafton is still celebrated today in Sweden, Thueringen and elsewhere. Under Christian influence it was probably transformed into a fest to drive out the Hexen. The festival became widely known outside Germany due to Goethe’s use of this theme in Faust.

The festival is marked by numerous rituals to ward off evil. On the eve of May 1st the bells toll in Luxembourg and many prayers are said, there are blessings with holy-water and blessed-palms in the homes and barns. In Schmalkalden in Thueringen the little girls, dressed as Hexen themselves, chase out the Walpermännchen. They wear paper hats and sometimes carry sticks in their hands. Similarly, in the south Harz region, the young boys ride stick-horses and chase the Hexen out of the fields. The most widespread remedy against evil spirits during Walpurgisnacht is noise. The boys begin making noise as soon as the sun sets. In Bohemia boards are beaten onto the ground in front of the houses, accompanied by this chant: “Hex geh raus, ‘s brennt dei Haus.” Whoever hears a pistol shot on that evening is supposed to say, “Schiess mei Hex a mit!” In Lippe the noise is referred to as “Maiklappen.” A lot of noise is especially made in front of the houses of married couples who are childless, because it is believed that it is necessary to “further the blessings.” In the Berner Jura the shepherd boys, on the eve of May 1, stand atop the manure-piles and crack whips in order to drive away wolves. The wolf is the incarnation of evil, and symbolizes the departure of winter. The manure-pile symbolizes fertility of the fields and gardens, and therefore is often the locale where prayers are said. Farmers who don’t have as many cattle help each other out in the summer. They make a pledge-group, which takes this form in Donaueschingen: they go to a nearby chapel and pray, then they climb together onto a manure-pile, hold hands, and say “Mir (=wir) gmaren miteinand,” which means “we are helping each other to bring home hay and grain with our cattle.” [i.e. they are sharing each other’s manure-piles, which is sprayed onto the fields as fertilizer].

So, folks, there is a parable here — when we lapse into slinging mud at each other, we should look at it from a higher perspective — we are really fertilizing each other’s fields!Geotarget

8123 – Beware the Ghost who walks

NEW DELHI (Reuters) – An Indian man who was believed dead caused panic when he returned, causing villagers to think he had come back as a ghost, the Times of India reported Monday.

Children screamed “Ghost! Ghost!” and villagers locked their doors when Raju Raghuvanshi returned from jail earlier this month to his village in Mandla district in the central state of Madhya Pradesh.

Raghuvanshi’s brothers, who had shaved their heads to mourn his death in line with Hindu tradition, fled when he appeared, the paper reported.

Villagers and family members have ostracized him, forcing Raghuvanshi to file a complaint with local police. The village council has demanded he prove he is not a ghost, but the paper did not say what kind of proof the elders wanted.

Raghuvanshi’s troubles arose after he was jailed last year. In prison, he was admitted to hospital with a stomach ailment from which he recovered but a distant relative told his family he had died.

Moment of Lyric (swf video)

Lying in the corner of a room with a stick in my hand
I’m pointing my stick at a far away land
My stick it has no leaves it grieves me to say
I’m gonna find a new stick then I’ll be, I’ll be on my way

I want to row you across the ocean so blue
Till we find the man
Who kissed all the women in Japan

Old women with no face trying to call out my name
Screaming she’s just been stabbed by a
Chargrilled accountant from Spain
Would you like to dance with me
She whispers from three miles away
We could dance the tango the I’ll be,
Oh I will be on my way

I want to row you across the ocean so blue
Until we find the man
Who drowned all the children in Iran

Walkabout was nice.. I got some needed chores done, and eyeballed some notebooks, as lappie’s feeling his age. 256 meg is lappie’s max, and the OS is getting too fat, and the HD too small.

I may get myself an early Christmas present sometime in the next month or so. The Averatec 3500 is looking like a winner. I’d prefer the pen to be mounted in a silo, rather than just on the side of the screen, but that’s a trivial concern next to it being a tablet-notebook that’s under $1000 after rebate.

I’ll see how I feel in a week or two.

Do any new cars have that little triangular window in the door? Strange nostalgia, seeing one recently.

Best line I’ve heard lately…

“A SUV with an American flag on it is like a whore wearing a rosary.”

Random scotto factoid: Lately, when I say the word nice, is sounds to me like “noice”.

6943 – Hey, Kool-Aid!

Hey, Kool-aid!

Seeing this icon reminded me of on of my favorite character ideas of Danny’s from games past.

Dan had a character Best Suited for his personality – “Man of Iron“, but one of his other planned supers was Kool-Aid Man. Child-actor who actually was Kool-Aid man.. became disenfranchised later in life when nobody took him seriously, and began using his “giant pitcher of red fluid”-powers to commit crimes. It didn’t take long to catch him… and now he goes on special missions with Z-squad. (Or… would, if he wasn’t asked to come up with something else. He ended up playing a tunneling Joe Pesci slimeball named the Weasel… a precursor to his current character in the D20 D&D game his students are running at the school.)

Watched Silent Running this morning. With the exception of the “message music” that seems to be in all movies in or around the early 70s, it is a really good film. I of course sympathize more with the murderous space-hippie than the corporate drones.

Lappie’s battery charge no longer detects properly… I suspect it’s on the way out. I wonder if I can locate an inexpensive replacement? He’s been a durable little bugger since the mack’s groves gig, years ago. The only add-ons I’ve ever done to him are memory and a wireless card (and reformatted from Windows Me(h) to 2000) … he’s served me well both as a primary and a backup machine for quite a span… aside from games that require heavy-duty graphics, it’s still a fine little workhorse.

Well, the rainy season is officially over… how come the hurricane season still extends into and through November?

The weather is lovely outside.. highs in the 80s at noontime, lows in the 60s at night. *This* is the reason my folks moved to the south in the first place.

I’ve got the urge to do some silly video-editing/movie making. Maybe next walkabout, I’ll get some good footage to fool with.

Another view of the soul – Egyptian

The ancient Egyptians named at least four components of the soul: the ka was the vital life force, and dwelt within the corpse after death; the ba was the soul proper, and the part that actually went on to the underworld; the khu represented spiritual intelligence, and the ren was one’s name. Two other concepts may have been related to the soul: the sekhem, an embodiment of one’s power, and the khaibit, one’s shadow. It’s definitely the ka that would animate an undead mummy, but khaibit seems like a prime candidate for manipulation by evil necromancy.

6895 – Equinox Is Here.

Good morning, and welcome to Autumn, at last! Traditionally a time for change, Autumn has always signaled the beginning of a renewal of life to me.

Though I live in a land where seasons are divided by how moist things are; a place where you can find seas of both brine and concrete, my heart resides elsewhere. Wide open spaces, with tame deer that like to nibble on rosebushes and enjoy a nice salt lick. Trees colored with every warm hue possible… golds, oranges and deep rust-reds. Someday I’ll be there, content in a room lit by purest moonlight, the sounds of acorns tapping the roof, randomly.

Here’s hoping that everyone enjoys the coming season, the changing of colors, Hallowe’en, new scents and the cooling, snuggly times ahead.

The last night of summer was a nearly perfect one for a walk. The 7-11 had the Diet Pepsi Slushie machine working just right, and the air was balmy, but not hot. It could be my mind playing tricks, but Autumn is on its way, for honest and true. I sat by the new river for a few, and looked into the water, just thinking… it amazes me that there are so many quiet, natural places in the city. Things laid out in strips and pieces.. it didn’t feel landscaped at all, but very natural. I think that I prefer to visit the river over the ocean, for whatever reason, despite the sea’s wonderful breezes. The river is more serene, relaxed.

Today’s Moment of Voodoo: The Soul.

In the Voudoun religion of Haiti, one’s existence is made up of five parts: n’ame, the spirit of the flesh; z’etoile, the star of destiny; corps cadavre, the mortal flesh; gros bon ange, a general life force that is recycled and not unique to each person, and ti bon ange (or petit bon ange), one’s personal essence and the source of one’s aura. Only the gros bon ange and ti bon ange are seen as being part of the soul, but all five parts are regarded as important in both life and death, so the distinction is somewhat blurred. The corps cadavre can be made into a zombi (zombie), while the ti bon ange can be captured to create a kind of spectral undead called a zombi astral (spirit zombie).

The CDC reports on who died of what during Hurricane Charley. A total of 31 deaths of which 17 “involved blunt trauma caused by injuries from falling trees, flying debris, and destroyed physical structures” and one drowning.

If you wish, please reply to this post and write something you would like to do with me someday.

Then post this in your journal to find out what people want to do with you.

September is going to bring a lot of things, I think. Bro’s Birthday coming up, as well.

I feel isolated and a little out of whack today. A few possible remedies, though I suspect the most likely one is tincture of time. Autumn is nearly here, and I hope that the recharge it brings will bring more light, less glare. Drugstores are doing the Halloween thing, already. Part of it is probably due to the number of cases last night.. the most recent was at 3:30 am.

I’m mildly peeved that I had much of the weekend off, but still just spent it inside, reading. I probably could’ve done more, but really wasn’t too motivated. Got the basics covered.

Come to think of it… a good case against Voodoo actually working is Papa & Baby Doc’s long-term existence.

I miss arcades… back when there was a big room full of pac man and centipede-type games.
