BHK made tasty pizza for the in-laws and me tonight… mine had eggplant and garlic with ricotta, and the other was true pepperoni. good stuff.

Presenting a doodle for the coloring book done on the palm while on the subway, then fiddled with GIMP once back home. I was thinking about making him more beveled looking, but rather dig the 2D vs 3D vibe going there. I’d like to see the coloring book community revitalized again.

peradouro drops pictures in there now and then, but aside from that, it’s pretty quiet. Same for the Oekaki board in the scottobear toybox.

There were many meetings at work today… I think the bulk of them were solidly productive.

In Health news –

Started coughing this morning, and it continues into the night.

Rescheduled dentist, and am waiting to hear scheduling for the back guy. Trying to get an appointment for presiden’t day if I can, but if not, maybe on one side of the weekend or another for maximum comfort.

I still need to schedule allergist remeet. Maybe I can do a doctor hat trick!

The Hulkout list – all the reasons Banner turned into the hulk during the course of the tv series.

Personal faves, (Thankfully, none have ever happened to me):

8. Being mauled by a bear

34. Handcuffed to a woman who is falling over the cliff

36. Somehow running into a bear trap

56. Somehow getting himself into a belfry and then realizing that a bell is there, just as it strikes the hour

78. Being thrown under a New Orleans Mardi Gras parade float by a mean guy in a gorilla suit who gives David a few kicks for good measure

95. Falling out of a plane without a parachute, then being given a parachute (which causes the person who pushed him to be told “That guy has nine lives”, to which the mean person responds by pulling out a rifle and saying “Yeah, but I got ten rounds”), and then having the straps to his parachute shot off when he is still 30 feet above an empty house so that he falls through the roof and hurts himself

106. Being fed poisoned sushi

112. While paralyzed for the episode, somehow getting caught in the middle of a barroom brawl, and while trying to quietly wheel himself out of the room, being hit by a flying body and knocked down the stairs (what David is even doing in such a situation goes unexplained)

“‘The LEGO brick turned 50 at exactly 1:58pm today. This cool timeline shows these fifty years of building frenzy by happy kids and kids-at-heart, all the milestones from the Legoland themed sets to Technic and Mindstorms NXT, as well as all kind of weird curiosities about the most famous stud-and-tube couple system in the world.'” – Via Slashdot.

Busy month this go-round. I’ll be glad when the bulk of testing and error-correcting passes. It’s a pretty thick sheaf of issues to chop down in the next couple of weeks…I’ll be glad once the rollout for the new software is complete.

Why things suck – knees and backs. See.. I knew it was a bad idea to walk upright! – quoted below.

Shouldn’t evolution have taken care of our blown-out knees and aching backs? Instead, evolution may be to blame; chimps don’t tear menisci or herniate discs like we do. It could be that our knees and backs are such a pain because we insist on standing upright. When our ancestors stood up on two feet, they stumbled upon a much more efficient way of walking that uses 75 percent less energy than knuckle-dragging. Over the next several million years, natural selection refined the structural modifications that keep our torso centered over our lower half as we put one foot in front of the other: longer legs, knobby knees, an elongated spine. But those adaptations can be a bit of a kludge.

By stacking the thigh bone directly on top of the shin bone, we’ve saddled our knees with more weight than they can handle. Even when you’re just strolling down the street, the pressure exerted on your knees is three to five times your body weight. During more strenuous activity like running or climbing stairs, it can be double that. By the time you hit 30, the cartilage that distributes your weight across the joint has already begun to wear away. The tissue loss may eventually lead to osteoarthritis, and the shin and thigh bones will begin to rub against each other. This so-called wear-and-tear arthritis sends about 5.5 million people to doctors every year.

The same thing happens to our vertebrae, which weren’t designed to sit on top of each other in one weight-bearing column. With time, the cushions between the bones lose some of their spring, and then one day, as you lift a grocery bag or slump in your chair, a disc can bulge out of place. Pain, numbness, and spasms result because the disc is now pressing on a nerve that connects your spinal cord to the rest of your body. More than 80 percent of working Americans will suffer from back pain that’s severe enough to limit their activity at some point during their careers.

Surgery is just a temporary fix for our anatomical woes. After a decade, replacement cartilage can wear away, too. But we can’t blame all of our aches on design flaws. The fact that we spend so much time hunched over a keyboard — level 70 World of Warcraft players, are you listening? — can’t be good. It might help if we all got up off our highly evolved duffs more often.

Bill O’Reilly – You have no idea what you’re talking about. I’ve been homeless, and I can surely tell you that there *are* homeless vets out there. Talk to some of these guys.

BHK pointed this out to me… maybe I can get her to play counterstrike after all, if Hello Kitty is involved! I’ll have to remember to download and install it.

Dinner was pseudo-chicken and noodles in a cream sauce with peas and broccoli… nom nom nom.

Jamie sent us a few photos of the Lime-Vanilla Ice ring cast in wax…. it looks good!

Called in sick to work – made a trip to the dentist to deal with that cracked tooth.

Before my root canal, we stopped for stuffed crust pie at pizza hut – bhk and I didn’t figure I’d be in the mood to eat after having my choppers done… fate was not on my side.

Unfortunately, I ordered a quepapa appetizer – one of those little tater tot things got caught in my throat, and seared the back of my esophagus. Our server tried to administer the Heimlich maneuver by grabbing me around my neck… so while I was busy trying to expel the spud that had grafted itself to my windpipe, I got to fight off a caring, yet misguided attempt at stopping me from choking by strangulation.

Hit the dentist, and he had a lot of trouble.. abscess. I got a perscription for penecillin (I didn’t know that they still did that, rather than all the alternates these days…) and filled it a tthe local walgreens. BHK – not one to be outdone by my accident prone-ness, got her finger caught in a shiatzu machine there.. nothing broken, just a nasty pinch.

Bah, says we… she was fine, and we zipped past the ATW man (see below) on the way home.

got home, played a little HL2, and am now watching psych with BHK.

atw man took his tree down, and is just sort of taking in the stars tonight.

Hap-Pye New(t) Year’s Eve!

Last night, we played rousing games of Dicecapades, Easter Island, and Zombie Fluxx. BHK smooshed me at Dicecapades, but I took the crown in the other two (I suspect that she’ll start whupping me at EI. I was not expecting to have to do 20 sit-ups while playing a board game… figures that I’d roll a 20 on a d20, and it’s not D&D I’m playing. Hazienda and Wishes were fishes still remain unplayed, but tomorrow may fix that issue.

I’m loving Portal and Half-Life2 – Haven’t taken too much time to try Team Fortress2 yet, but that looks to be the keenest of them all. After I got through the regular way…. the first thing I’ll do is apply the portal gun hack to HL2. (video here ) Somebody let me know when you can do this in HL2:deathmatch… that’ll add some color. Funny that HL2 was relaesed back in ’04… I’d only ever played death match before Christmas this year. i’m really glad that BHK pointed Mom and Wilt to my Amazon wish list this year.

Still getting around to Mario Party 8, and Heatseeker – BHK and I have played Mario Galaxy before, but now we own it! We tried Wii Game party, (the reviews are rather harsh) but my skill set with the controls is pretty poor yet… practice makes perfect, no doubt!

Worked today, a regular shift. I got quite a lot done! There are benefits to coming into the office when most folks are on vacation.

My New Year’s Resolution this year is 1600 x 1050, thanks to my biggest prezzie, a 22″ wide screen monitor from BHK and the In-laws! The Web looks more than a little different through that window…. so many sites are hard-wired to a specific size, my homepage and lj, included. Time to develop a few more flexible layouts, methinks.

Other Resolutions include – Laptop (Circle)- 1024 x 768, TV 640 x 480, PDA (Point) 420 x 340.

Here’s the 2007 Zeitgeist from google… not too similar to my own. Second life is really the only thing there that I have an interest in, and my visits there have been far too brief this year. Here’s the archive from past years.

To any locals that may be reading this –

As we approach the end of 2007, what a better way to start off 2008 with a chilly dip in the Chesapeake Bay. Join us on Jan 1st sign up starts at 12:30 and the plunge will be at 1:00 p.m. After you have braved the cold water, grab a cup of chili and warm by the fire.

I seem to recall the plunge taking place earlier last year, but it’s actually about an hour earlier.

Hump-day. Somehow, I can’t get the mental picture of dozens of Käpylehmät out of my head. Cone-cows for everyone! Color me spoiled, but I’m glad I’ve got a Wii, a boatload of boardgames, and BHK to play them all with! Come to think of it, maybe she’d like a pine cone duck / llama / puggle for the holidays. This doesn’t look like any puggle I’ve seen.

That said, maybe Pye and Newt would like to play with a few pine cones…. I’ll see what I can round up.

Secret Santa Day at work! I got a $20 gamestop card, a gumdrop penguin, and a candy cane! Thanks, Mystery Kringle! I suspect that’ll be a hefty piece of Mario Galaxy or some other swell game.

BHK and I are just taking it easy tonight… hitting the sack early, too – just as soon as she’s done on the phone with Misti. Apparently Bugah has poor faith about Santa, but they don’t really talk about it. That’s a bummer… hopefully the holiday spirit will still prevail.

“The Tunguska event, an explosion on June 30, 1908, cleared an 800-sq.-mi. swath of Siberian forest. Was it a UFO crash? An alien weapons test? Now, Sandia National Laboratories has released its own explanation for the Tunguska event. Using supercomputers to create a 3D simulation of the explosion, the Department of Energy-funded nuke lab has determined that Tunguska was, indeed, the explosion of a relatively small asteroid. The simulation videos are well worth checking out — they show a fireball slamming into the earth from the asteroid’s air burst. The researchers caution that we should be keeping watch for many more small, potentially earth-impacting asteroids than we are currently tracking.”

Fuzzy look at the Christmas Tree through my weakening cell phone.

1217070540.jpg

Back to work: Today was a solid one; Lots of SQL, NF2.0/CMS and general purpose schuff on the brain. Only 4 more days until Christmas Break!

Rule of the day – The hardest part about solving a problem is defining it. Once everyone is on the same page, things go much more smoothly.

Kellie-bellie got a puggle… Spencer. Too cute!

Board game gifts for geeks, eh? What, no pyramid games?

Got Hey, That’s my Fish! from Danny, and I’ve been playing Pente-Go with BHK for an age.

Robo Rally has been on my list for ages. Never got around to getting it. (RAMbots seems similar though, and playable right now.)

Battle Lore – looks cool, but $70 seems spendy.

I suspect Fiji will appeal to BHK.

RA, Wits & Wagers, Settlers of Catan, Coloretto, Puerto Rico – 3+ players. hm. I prefer the option for 2 players, if possible. We may meet a few more boardgamers sometime, but we’ve already got witch trial and munchkin diriviatives for that.

BHK found some ed emberly books at the used bookstore (didn’t buy ’em, as they were *very* used)… serious flashbacks there.

Jumping Frenchmen of Maine. That’s a pretty interesting disorder… That and Latah. I wonder how much research has gone into it in order to reprodce the results?

The office Christmas party was fun – BHK came with me and together we won 2nd place in the “music, trivia, pictionary, and bingo combo” games. That equals a $100 gift card. Not bad at all… after work she and I went out to get coffee with our prize, and then picked up each other a present at the bookstore.

The food was good. The cheesecake was the clear winner for me, though the crab soup was nice as well. The bar was well-stocked, but I didn’t partake of any booze – diet pepsi is about my limit, especially in mixed company. BHK and I sat with Jim and his wife, Tom, Rip and Maggie. We made some assorted small talk – everything from adopting dogs to visiting nearby museums.

Pictionary went well… the center table did brilliantly.. speed was impressive at the solution for Polar Express. I guess some of the “Train on the Brain” paid off – they got it in 9 seconds. Our table got Mickey’s Christmas Carol in 24.

Word scramble we couldn’t work out was “fireplace”. Many of the rest were pretty easy, once you yanked the word snow out of them. snowshoes, snowmobile, etc.

We have about $45 left on the card for more Christmas “found money” funzies. That was surely a welcome addition to our coffers this year. We also got a Christmas Bonus, but that got piped right into savings.

Additional purchases: not as fun, but required for continued comfort – ordered 2 pairs of sneakers. I have to get some new dress shoes, too, as my black ones are beat and the brown ones will be on the way out, soon. A pity that crocs aren’t considered proper business attire. Or maybe it’s just as well… slippery slope and all.. don’t want folks coming to work in just thermal undies or some such comfort.

California Tortilla for dinner, and then back here to home…. discovered that my cell phone charger isn’t working consistently… I’ll have to hit Verizon and see if it’s the charger or the phone… I hope it’s the charger, because replacing phones has been a bit of a bugaboo this year.

Tomorrow is the Christmas party at work. I wonder what the following week before vacation is going to be like? I suspect it’ll mostly be business as usual.

Got BHK David DeBoy‘s Crabs for Christmas CD… gave it to her early… as a cd of christmas music on christmas day has a very limited shelf-life. (At least until next year) She was more than delighted – it really is pretty much “Our” holiday song, after all.

The other songs on the CD are pretty groovy, too. I was a little worried it might be a lot of filler, but the tunes are a lot of fun – especially if you’re a Marylander.

Found out how to add everyone on my lj friends page to an rss reader directly... That’s pretty dang handy.

Also, drawings of Bears in Ill-fitting hats.

via dcwmata –

“By an overwhelming majority Metro board members approved today the largest increases in subway fares and parking fees in the agency’s history after months of contentious debate among directors…

“The board members essentially approved a plan offered in recent days by Maryland members that lessens the impact on suburban and long-distance riders. That plan followed a public hearing that drew more than 400 comments from riders, many of whom said that proposed fare and fee hikes were too high and not merited by metro’s unreliable service.”

9093 – Wednesday

Downright warm today at 61F. I really didn’t even need to wear a jacket today.

I like the word folderol.

I still have a little trouble understanding how Aflac or similar programs could be beneficial to me over and above my other health insurance… it doesn’t seem like it’s of much utility to my situation, but perhaps I’m mistaken. I don’t know it it’s me, or if the folks explaining it sort of missed my personal buttons. (Most of the talk sounded a bit like standard insurance fear-mongering.) The whole medical / insurance system really gets my goat sometimes – there’s always a feel of a protection racket itching in the back of my skull.

Heard through the grapevine that my ex’s home went into foreclosure. I pity her, but I don’t know the whole situation. I hope that she and her family find a good place to crash and get cover… seems like a heck of a thing to happen at Christmas.

Thinking good thoughts about BHK today. She has been working very hard for quite some time on multiple difficult projects. Digging up old records is tough … the chain of information is full of weak links. I remember how annoying it was just to shift information between Comcast and Verizon – slip that same information between state and federal agencies, and it only adds to the mountain of paperwork, receipt of careless service and red tape.

I have the urge to map out my office building (at least the floor I’m on), our house in North Beach, and maybe some of WMATA in a fps engine like counterstrike or half-life, just to do it. Home wouldn’t be a huge undertaking, and I have the layout of the tower… but the subway might be tricky. Given the huge number of mods out there already, it wouldn’t surprise me if it already existed in some rippable form.

I wanted my own radio station when I was in High school… call letters WMBT – wombat radio.

After work, we visited the in-laws for a bit…. watched The Santa Clause. It’s sort of nice to have fun family nearby. Nobody else had seen the film, which was received well enough.

9091 – Monday

It started with a foggy Monday morning. (sakes, that’s even weaker than “It was a dark and stormy night.”) Sleepy start, but a little nap on the train into work gave me a little jump start. Warmer lately… upper 40s, with very little wind.

Work progressed evenly, though there is plenty to do. The holiday cookie competition was launched in the break room – 4 entries this year. A white chocolate / cranberry drop, pecan bar with milk chocolate, an oatmeal-type square, and a rum ball sort of cookie…. I’m torn, because they’re all good stuff. I think that I’ll end up voting for #2 or #3… another sampling tomorrow will help me to decide. 😉

Lunch was leftover ziti and veggies from last night’s din-din… it was yummy – garlic is a wonderful thing.

Heading home was a bit pokey, due to a delay on the green line… a person was hit by a train at Fort Meade, home of the NSA. My imagination makes me wonder if it’s a spy or dark ops guy running away from the men in black. Some mastermind making off with the keyword list from ECHELON, no doubt. We have a couple of those radomes in North Beach/Chesapeake Beach, come to think of it.

Why yes, I did run a little program on the above for wiki-links. That’s sort of distracting… I doubt that I’ll do that as regularly again. I’m a little goggle-eyed just looking at all of the possible snap link-bubbles there.

Got home, and snacked on Cheese crackers while watching Gossip Girl with BHK. I’m not sure when the episode was made, but it sure has a writer’s strike feel to it… Dixie from Brisco County has aged a lot better than Bruce Campbell. Then again, he’s ten years older than her. Speaking of which… I really dug Burn Notice – Fresher to me than House… presses all the right buttons for me.

After a snack, we finally got to see Transformers, despite all the warnings against it. I tend to agree, that it was really cornball and kind of dumb, but it had a couple of fun bits. I wouldn’t have walked out of the theater, but I might have complained about paying $10 to see it. Good for a no-brainer netflix night. Not worth seeing more than once. Speaking of flicks, I’m looking forward to seeing Machine Girl (note, blood-spray violence in the trailer – flying guillotine, drill bra, machine gun arm, and tempura / sushi trauma.)

BHK brought home two more game rentals… tried out one, Geometry Wars. Fun, but tough… very retro feel due to the vector graphics and asteroids / omega race vibe. Not a lot to it, but the controls are pretty nifty, and multi-player has some real bite to it.

Overall, we had a relaxing night – still no lights on the tree, but that’s where we were last year, too. Tomorrow, I think that there’s a strong possibility of putting a few more items up… our little outdoor teak tree has some all-weather lights on, and it looks terribly cute. Photos are going to have to follow soon.

As it is, I’m up too late! A quick link, and I’m off to bedski.

Cylinder Preservation and Digitization Project. It’s goatloads of old Edison cylinder recordings, some downloadable, plus a selection of them can be streamed while your browse. And yes, they have “Yes We Have No Bananas”, as recorded in 1923 by the Green Bros. Novelty Band. What more could one ask of any website?”

9068 – Tuesday

Got my last filling (and the broken filling repaired) last night – On our way home, The ATW man had shed his Spidey Costume, and is now preparing for winter! BHK thought he was killing a turkey, but it turns out that he’s just chopping some wood.

Full size is the best way to catch any detail. I rather like the amorphous white blob the light makes… I pretend it’s The Man’s alien friend, blinky.

1119072041.jpg

Since he didn’t numb me very effectively, the anesthetic wore off in under 20 minutes. I was able to enjoy a little stuffed crust pie… and a few quepapas (tasty glorified tater tots) for a lead-in.

I’m about done with Penguin Soccer… it just doesn’t stand up to 4-player, and 2-playerwise… I think that the novelty has worn off. Even with a few tweaks, it just needs more work. I’m leaning more towards Binary Homeworlds and Martian Chess as far as icehouse / pyramid games of choice stand out. A few games of Zamboni Wars might bump that into the running, too.

Game design on Pumpkin has come to a standstill… I need to pick up the pen and get back on working the crimps out of a few sticky elements. (Not to Mention Giants and Dwarfs / Brier Patch )

For a lot of Playable games (and more than a few not-so-playable ones) , icehouse.org is still pretty handy. I’m not doing the competition this winter, as I prefer to try and design a good game first, and then worry about what pieces are needed – rather than the other way around. Heck, you can play Martian chess with pennies, nickels and quarters if you wanted to.

Homeworlds seems a lot simpler to play in person than on superdupergames, but it is nice having the hard-coded rules keeping track of what can and can’t be done.

BHK made a tasty cake for the gang’s thanksgiving at work… orange cake with a cranberry drizzle on top. Yummy… vaguely reminded me of fruit loops.

Newton and Pyewacket are getting to be quite the little chums… perhaps it’s due to the colder weather, but they’re downright affectionate with one another these days. Newt lovingly headbutted Pye the other night – that’s something totally unanticipated.

Kindle looks nifty, but $400 is way too much to spend. I’d probably totally snag it for $200, so maybe next year. I’ll be very interested to see where the next version of the technology goes… but it’d be worth it for just free rss reading and wikipedia on the fly, along with whatever books I put on there myself. Throw in some basic PDA functionality, and you’ve got me, but good. EV-DO could work wonders, too. It reads prc files, so all of my palm ebooks would be just fine, too.

Two interesting links, especially for around thanksgiving – Sent to me by BHK Both give food to the needy by asking for a story from you or just improving your vocabulary.

From the office this morning – I thought I heard a bird hit the window…I’m on the 11th story, not used to outdoor noises, let alone a loud *SPACK* against the glass behind me. As always, clicks embiggen.

Not a bird.. the window washer guy rappelling down at great speed.

A quick peek of my office, taken with my phone’s camera this morning – not seen, the bright moon and Venus, first thing upon leaving the house this morning. Brilliant. Wave hi to DC!

1105071004.jpg

Lunch of leftover Chinese food was almost as good as lunch of leftover BHK casserole… but not quite. Dang tasty, anyhow.

Strange… we had trick or treaters the day after Halloween, and were only too happy to give our crusty old candies that didn’t make the grade the night prior. I thought it was a fairly unique situation, but it seems that it’s not an isolated incident. Note – we gave cute little kids the good stuff – chocolate, and smarties for Daniel (as he’s lactose intolerant), but any teens that came by without costumes got nasty stale necco wafers and clove candies that we hadn’t eaten in about a year.

Side note… do I really have to link to what trick or treaters or Halloween is? I doubt it.

We don’t have much candy left at the house, but gals at work still have huge bowls set out. It’s a real challenge not to grab a kit-kat when it’s right in my flight path.

I wonder how old is the “right” age to stop trick or treating… I always figured the cutoff was age 12, but maybe that was just me.

BHK had a meeting with the city, and afterward, we met at Thursday’s with the in-laws for a late supper.

Zombie Picture taken on the metro a few days back… good ol’ Halloween.

Considering that a Ford Model-T got as good or better mileage than most of today’s U.S. automobiles, I guess it’s not suprising that Henry Ford was, according to this 1934 profile, well ahead of the game in biofuels and bioplastics:

Science is discovering means of transforming products of the farm into materials for manufacture. Through his experimental farms, Henry Ford now successfully converts the common soy bean into automobile parts and an oil which makes up 30 per cent of the Ford car finish.

Mr. Ford declares that this plastic industry, this evolution of industrial agriculture, still is in its infancy and that its possibilities and opportunities are limitless. As an example, he points out that his laboratories have produced from the soy bean a tough, hard, yet inexpensive material which stands a pressure of 9,000 pounds without breaking… Ford and his chemists envision the time when automobile bodies, houses, skyscrapers and even great monuments may be fabricated from the soy bean.

Then again: maybe biofuels aren’t such a good idea, anyway.

working streaming music for wii – http://www.finetune.com (or better – http://www.finetune.com/wii/aboutwii.html )

We broke down and got the internet channel for the wii last night – looks good! Already bookmarked some news sites, newtcam and lj. it reads pretty well, especially in single column mode. unfortunately, pandora doesn’t stream audio to the tv, but youtube works well. I’m going got try to locate some good streaming audio sites that aren’t too memory intensive and use flash or java rather than a proprietary system… maybe live365? Next to try is surfing to an mp3 to play it.

The autumn leaves are really starting to pop… on our way this morning to work, BHK and I decided that we’re going to have to go on a photo-mission sometime this weekend.

Brought Doughnuts into the office via Dunkin’s – they seemed to go over well. I’m glad it’s friday and the weekend has begun!

LONDON (Reuters) – Elephants can literally smell danger, according to a study on Thursday that shows the animals can sniff out whether humans are friends or foes. Continue reading 9029 – fri
