9662 – Friday!

No Franklin this morning, but his opposite number, (a skittish and dirty gray tabby with white socks) said hello from a distance… ran when I greeted her, but I put some treats down in the field where she was hanging out. Hopefully she’ll have a little snack later.

Set up my bookmooch account – I’m scottobear there , (avonberg is also there, far more active!)

buffalo shrimp salads with the in-laws tonight – postponed – in-laws were busy, so we did buffalo-pseudo-chicken-patty salads, instead.

Playing hangman with BHK earlier. Occupation: –DD-NG M-N-STER

My bad, I thought it was Pudding Monster. BHK got it right with Wedding Minister. I would love to have a job as a pudding monster, at least for a bit.

9661 – Thursday

Newton and Pyewacket were especially resistant to my heading out this morning. Good Snuggle and nap weather.

No Franklin – also due to rainy day.

Came home, dinner of pigs in blankets, and mac & cheese. The boys were happy to see me.

BHK got goodies for the garden and the yard! So far, she’s picked up  Brussel sprouts, cauliflower, cabbage, sugar peas, tulips, radishes, spinach and something else that doesn’t leap immediately to mind. Broccoli will be coming later.

I’m glad BHK has such sharp cooking cred – I’m still not sure how I feel about baby stinkhead sprouts, but I’m sure she’ll make ’em great. (I also used to dislike zucchini, so what do I know?)

Some fires to put out at work, went quickly enough.

BHK fell asleep next to me while watching last restaurant standing. Making an early night of it again – maybe we’ll catch the office tomorrow.

kottke pointed me to this re: Some answers to the disappearing honeybee problem

In an article for Scientific American, two scientists who are working on the causes of colony collapse disorder (CCD) say that they and other researchers have made some progress in determining what’s killing all of those bees.

The growing consensus among researchers is that multiple factors such as poor nutrition and exposure to pesticides can interact to weaken colonies and make them susceptible to a virus-mediated collapse. In the case of our experiments in greenhouses, the stress of being confined to a relatively small space could have been enough to make colonies succumb to IAPV and die with CCD-like symptoms.

It’s like AIDS for bees…the lowered immunity doesn’t kill directly but makes the bees more susceptible to other illness. One the techniques researchers used in investigating CDD is metagenomics. Instead of singling out an organism for analysis, they essentially mixed together a bunch of genetic material found in the bees (including any bacteria, viruses, parasites, etc.) and sliced it up into small pieces that were individually deciphered. They went through those pieces one by one and assigned them to known organisms until they ran across something unusual.

The CSI-style investigation greatly expanded our general knowledge of honeybees. First, it showed that all samples (CCD and healthy) had eight different bacteria that had been described in two previous studies from other parts of the world. These findings strongly suggest that those bacteria may be symbionts, perhaps serving an essential role in bee biology such as aiding in digestion. We also found two nosema species, two other fungi and several bee viruses. But one bee virus stood out, as it had never been identified in the U.S.: the Israeli acute paralysis virus, or IAPV.

Franklin was back – and happy to have a little nibble for breakfast. I ate my bagel and gave him treats and pets for breakkies.

speaking of critters –  BHK master list of things for us to adopt –

  1. duck
  2. llama
  3. alpaca
  4. puggle
  5. griffon (spunky one)
  6. pig
  7. baby otter (preferably 2 )

Comcast came back – apparently they didn’t complete the disconnect from the "walled garden". Fortunately, BHK was savvy enough to tell them that our equipment wasn’t bad – told them to get one off the truck, and test – failed, and that led them to call and fix earlier.

They reset the router though – I’m going to have to rename and reset some security. (not crazy about having it called "linksys" or "default" when "mr meaty" or "salmagundia" will do better.

Let’s see how well this stays together.

Fooling around near the bus stop, while waiting for BHK to come get me – it’s pretty gray outside for springtime, yet, and plenty cool.

lapcam

After work tonight, BHK picked me up, an we went to Pizza Hut with Adam. Brought him back his hoodie and power cable left behind the other night he slept over, as well as some little treats picked up for him at 7-11 (chips, gummis, soda)

Adam is still not interested in getting BHK a Llama via his rental company, and we were all too tired to do candlepin bowling.

Dropped him off, saw a cd/video game exchange place… swung in for a moment – not a bad collection of stuff, and the prices look right. I’ll be back.

We got home, and now are heading to bed… early, but both of us are bushed!

Again slow to rise this morning – I need to hit the sack earlier during the week.

I brought some snacks for Franklin, but he was nowhere to be found this morning.

Open BVE Train sim!  – probably only interesting to me and Larry, dear journal.

European researchers have discovered that chimpanzees have a built-in mental GPS, keeping ‘a geometric mental map of their home range, moving from point to point in nearly straight lines.’ Using GPS, two primatologists followed 15 chimpanzees for 217 days, and determined that the apes were ‘using a mental map built around geometric coordinates.’ They’re not just identifying landmarks in their surroundings, and in fact, even when swinging through trees, the chimps planned out their route several trees in advance. Here’s the paper in the journal Animal Behavior.

Comcast was difficult again this evening, but I called and they reset the modem – hopefully it’ll be smooth sailing, now. BHK made tasty pretend chicken and creamy noodles with peas for supper.. until later!

9658 – Monday

Slow to get up – Aiee monday, indeed. It took me a good hour or two to shake off the morning sleepies.

Made it to work with time to spare, I was welcomed by Franklin-cat – I’m going to get treats for him later.

Batman Brave & the Bold continues to be exceptional  – I really liked the recent Joker’s 50’s design is … also "brake, choke, throttle, " my kind of car! comment was perfect.

Speaking of Throttle – Comcast returned – didn’t call BHK to let her know they had come by – seems they had throttled down our connection because they couldn’t figure out how to properly bill us? What? Anyhow, it is  back up to speed now. Just as well – Verison’s service isn’t in our area – our only other alternative is satellite-type stuff – Hughes net. That’s the price we pay for living in a rural-ish area, I guess!

Grabbed subs, did $2 worth of scratch-off tickets (and won$2! – broke even), and headed home to watch Hancock  tonight – I thought it was pretty enjoyable, all told. I think the thing was to not expect "meteor man – drunk hero" throughout the whole film. I do have to wonder about the other super though… why was Hancock the only person being a hero? Just seeing the movie made me wonder if a Damage Control film was a viable thing – a ton of collateral damage.

I just figured out the cartoon I was whistling the song to earlier (singing to pyewacket and newt) – An Itch in Time – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I-zA16E-_NY about 1:30 into the video

9657 – Sunday –

Lazy day today, to make up for yesterday’s jaunt. We had a leisurely morning at home – woke up slowly and got ready to head out for the day.

After BHK got out of the shower, we took another nap… so walkies were out.

Via DCist

This morning the National Park Service announced it has revised the peak bloom dates for D.C.’s famed cherry blossoms, to April 1-4. They’ve also added on an overall "Blooming Period," from March 28-April 11, which nicely overlaps the dates of the National Cherry Blossom Festival (March 28-April 12).

The Chesapeake Bay’s health isn’t looking so hot these days.

Totday, we hung back – got up, showered, had a nibble, rested, opted out of boardwalking and watchmen

instead, we went with the in-laws to outback, shopped for groceries, and I was frightened by the evil bunny pigs.

9656 – Saturday –

Cable guy came by this morning to evaluate our Internet – he replaced the line from the pole to our house, and the box on the pole – looks better, but they’re sending out another truck on Monday to evaluate some more. I’m just glad it’s not an "inside the house" issue. I suspect with so many folks using Verizon around here, we may be the only Comcast people using that particular line. (side edit, spellchecker wanted to change "Comcast" to "compost". I feel the same way. )

While waiting for the cable guy, BHK tuned in to Twilight and I watched it with her.  It was about what I expected. The lead characters didn’t do much for me – I saw no "sizzle" and they weren’t particularly attractive. There was certainly a powerful Mary Sue vibe going on. I’d say I liked the wolf tribe folks most of the lot of ’em, and I think BHK liked the little emo-haircut news-kid.

After the pole-climber was done, we headed out for the day – First got my shots in record time – (BHK and Kendall’s Mom chatted, so it seemed more quickly that I thought) – Instead of our usual walk around town, I thought it’d be nice to take BHK to Annapolis and just hoof it there for a bit.

Did a lot of window shopping and people-watching. Rather than getting lunch, we just sort of nibbled at the assorted stops along the way. Split a bagel here, a cookie there, a coffee somewhere else.

Stopped off at third eye comics – picked up vol 1 of Planetary and the Essential Dr. Strange . (BHK grabbed The New York Four – being an NYU grad and all) They guys at Third Eye are always willing to lend a hand, and can recommend stuff that they think I’ll like – so far, so good! I’m not a huge Warren Ellis fan, but planetary has a lot of good stuff in it – and I’ve always dug Dr. Strange.

Passed by an estate sale – lots of nifty antiques – I think it gave BHK the idea to do a distressed dresser in the bedroom.

K-mart of the walking dead – Got some solar-charged tiki lights for the porch walkway. The employees and customers were more than a little frightening – red-eyed and many doing the thorozine shuffle. Contemplated lawn furniture for spring, and decided against it, as it was too rickety for me to be sitting on for any extended period.

Visited the local hardware store to look for a bracket to hang the bell from my dad’s boat up – may return there next week.

Paused at a school yard sale (raising money for the band to go to Canada) – we got some baked goods – a crazy-colored cupcake (see below), and a brownie…  BHK also snagged a hot dog, and bought her mom some orange glasses – perfect for a margarita sometime. I obtained another webcam – this one was only $1 after BHK haggled it down from $2. We’ll see if it works later this month.  Also seen below are the ATW man playing ping pong, a found travel bug (trailer on the bio lab at the same yard sale) and an advertisement that stopped BHK in her tracks. PUPPIES IN BABY CRIBS.

BHK loved the Puggle , but I was a bigger fan of the Brussels Griffon not as cute, but it had a fantastic and playful personality – a little "tough guy". It’s a good thing I’m still very allergic to the critters, or something probably would’ve come home with us.

0321092044.jpg.0321091910.jpg.0321091155a.jpg.0321091155.jpg.0321091135.jpg

The in-laws met with us later on, and we did supper at Adam’s Ribs – a onion loaf was bit greasy, but the veggies were good, and the service excellent.

Finished up Twilight when we got home… a lovely full day.

9655 – Friday

At last!

Springtime… the weekend!

I’d like to take BHK to Annapolis this weekend, do a little walkies and just enjoy each others company. That’s the plan, anyhow!

BHK got this recently, regarding Prince George’s County SWAT issue back in August. I feel that it’s worth sharing, dear journal.

I write these many months later to thank you for reaching out to comfort my family and I after last summer’s terrifying SWAT attack of our home.  The tremendous outpouring of support that we received from our friends, neighbors, and so many complete strangers sustained us through the worst of it, and I continued to find comfort in the kind words as I read the emails well into the fall.

Trinity and I continue to heal, and we always will miss Payton and Chase terribly.  One thing that has helped is that we’ve adopted another black Labrador, Marshall.  As you can see from the picture, Marshall has brought incredible joy to our lives.

After the incident drew international attention and outrage, Prince George’s County police finally exonerated my family and me of any wrong doing.  However, they have refused to apologize and continue to defend their actions in my case.

Over the last several months, I have undergone a personal journey to try to understand how this terrible incident could happen.  My initial reaction was that it was a terrible mistake.  However, as I have learned more, I have come to understand that what my family and I experienced is part of a growing and troubling trend where law enforcement is relying on SWAT teams to perform duties once handled by ordinary police officers.

In our case, the police deployed a SWAT team without performing basic investigatory work and apparently without considering more measured approaches.  Prince George’s County recently has acknowledged that it indiscriminately deploys SWAT teams to serve drug warrants.  Preliminary estimates suggest that the county deployed SWAT teams as many as 700 times a year – that is twice a day!  Other counties in Maryland also report hundreds of SWAT team deployments a year, and we have uncovered numerous other stories of botched and inappropriate raids, innocent families terrorized, and family dogs killed.

In fact, the inappropriate use of SWAT teams seems to be a national problem.  The number of SWAT team deployments nationwide has grown exponentially from about 2,500 per year in the early 1980s to over 50,000 in 2005.  SWAT teams used to be reserved for unusually dangerous situations such as the arrest of major criminals known to have hig h-powered weapons or hostage situations.  However, many police forces are using them today against people they suspect of recreational drug use and other much smaller crimes.

The more I have learned, the more I feel obligated to do everything I can to rein in over-aggressive policing.  I am working with Maryland lawmakers to pass legislation requiring the number of SWAT deployments and their outcomes to be regularly reported to civilian authorities.  By shining a light on paramilitary police activities, law enforcement agencies should find it in their best interests to change their practices and limit the use of SWAT teams to situations where the charges are grave and a violent response can be reasonably anticipated.  The Senate passed SB 447 unanimously yesterday, but we expect to run into more resistance in the House of Delegates.  As soon as we enact this legislation in Maryland, I intend to work with lawmakers in other states to pass similar legislation. We are also considering actions that can be taken on a federal level.

To help in this effort, we have created a web site, www.protectourliberties.com, which tells the stories of a number of innocent victims of traumatizing SWAT raids.  It also contains media clips of the coverage we’ve received and information about our legislative work.  If you are interested in staying informed about this issue, please sign up for updates that I’ll send every month or so.  Also, if you could volunteer for citizen advocacy or policy development work, I would really appreciate your help.  Our next citizen advocacy project is a Lobby Night on Monday, March 23rd at the Maryland Capital.

Thank you, again, for your support and encouragement!
Warm regards,
Cheye

Franklin (the outdoor cat who lives near my office) followed me a bit this morning to work, I stopped to give him some love – he’s a sweetheart. I made sure to wash my hands very carefully – don’t want to allergy myself too much, or possibly bring back feline leukemia to the boys at home. I should start bringing Franklin a little treat or something.

If I’m not careful, BHK is going to make me adopt him and bring him home. Plenty of little hellcats at the house already, but I’m a soft touch.

Though I am of no particular religious faith of my own, I don’t mind when others express belief… to a degree. Riding the green line into work this morning, a wall-eyed lady was shrieking out hosannas and praise the lords intermixed with some tuneless chant-like singing. she had headphones on, but I suspect that they were just props so she could ramble loudly.

I’ve seen this from assorted people, numerous times – usually on the bus, but the train here and the tri-rail back in Fort Lauderdale.  Why are folks permitted to holler at the top of their lungs while I’m confined to the same space as they are? I think that the train is better for just making a lot of noise without repercussions, because it’s less likely that it’ll stop and eject the person.

(They won’t shut up – all I want to do is nap)

I’ve been "witnessed" to at least 4 times, maybe more while on the bus. I’ve noticed that the best thing to do is just be quiet and let it pass, because the folks doing it are generally more than a little unhinged already – I don’t want someone flipping out too much.. it seems like they run out of gas after about 15 minutes (which seems like an hour) and then start again maybe 5 minutes after that.

There needs to be some sort of code of ethics – if I’m trapped with a person that is at the minimum causing sound pollution that I don’t want, or at maximum is a foamy-mouthed looney, I get upset. I was fantasizing about picking up a tranquilizer dart gun somewhere for the bulk of the noise.

In a similar vein, I don’t mind being trapped on a bus with folks talking a little loudly on the phone if it’s a language I don’t know… if it’s English, it bugs me, but if it’s something very exotic (something Asian or African – not too uncommon in DC area) I don’t mind nearly so much. German, French, Creole and Spanish is fairly annoying too, for some reason. (if I’m in a movie theater, however, it’s easy for me to leave and get an attendant.)

The ride home on the train was easier on my ears.

Called Comcast about some service – if they slack on me too much, I think we’ll just cut that internet cord, and go to hughes-net or some other provider.

Tasty buffalo "chicken" salad for dinner tonight – and I had the rare beer – (Michelob Lime/cactus – good, light fare).

BHK and I are giving up on Castle, I think – 2 episodes, and neither had the grabbing power. Going to give Better Off Ted another chance, but I suspect the quirkyness is already too stiff for real fun, and it’ll get switched off, too.

Our netflix came in, in time for the weekend – Hancock and Run, Fat Boy, Run . My hopes aren’t too high – If I’m entertained, that’ll do the trick.

Bro’s girlfriend / possible mother to his kid Shannon has been found, and she and her baby are doing OK – Momster is distancing herself from the situation – and I think that’s a good thing.

Google voice – free phone goodies –

http://www.google.com/support/voice/bin/answer.py?answer=142423 – That sounds amazing… google… I hope you don’t turn too evil on me!

Ran a query to update about 20000 drivers for a client – amazing what a little snippet of code in the right place at the right time will do.

update driver_details set timestamp=’2009-03-18 20:10:00′

WHERE

driver_details.MC_ACCT_NO =  ‘**account number**’ AND

driver_details.DRV_TERMINATED_DT is null

That’ll earmark all the active users for that group and send an update file to everybody. Hooray for Triggers !

Chasing potential errors after, now. Seems to be working within parameters, save for one not splitting properly.

Chinese food from the Octagon tonight – this was try #2 – I suspect BHK’ll be leery of a third try, unless Little Panda or Grace’s are closed.

Happy St. Patty’s, All you Irish!
(And I think everyone is Irish today.)

In-laws and Adam came over tonight – BHK made wonderful Thai Curry soup, and it was a meal fit for a king!

Added Bonus of the day – she got a food processor for $13 – price must’ve been marked wrong, as it said $26 (on sale from $40ish)

It’s a school night – just enough time to fix Adam’s mac and hit the sack! G’nite, dear journal!

I’m a little out of whack today – hopefully tomorrow will be better.

Quiz-meme –

With technology on our doorstep and it’s affect on daily living, how concerned are you?
Tag your friends and see what they think. Cut and paste the questions and replace my answers with your own.

1. Do you see currency being replaced entirely by debit accounts and wired transactions by 2050?
No. I think that there will always be a desire for a harder to track form of currency, especially for consensual crime.

2. Do you feel intrusions into our very thoughts by technology in the next 10 years?
Facebook and Livejournal are already here!

3. If transactions become entirely electronic, do you feel that every thing you buy, sell or earn will be recorded?
Absolutely.

4.Of the 3 questions above, do you feel this data will be accessible by government and industry?
Yes.

5. Do you think this information could be used to control you in any way? Mishandled?
Certainly, which is why I suspect currency will not die.

6. Are you aware that scanning devices are now capable of translating our thoughts?
To a degree.

7. Are you aware that devices are becoming so small and integrated that they could be as small as a cell phone, and perform all of the actions exampled above including what cell phones already do now?
yes

8. After viewing this link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nZ-VjUKAsao and reading this article http://www.newscientist.com/article/dn16751-brain-scan-reveals-memories-of-where-youve-been.html
Do you still doubt the future possibility of technology?
Nope

9. would you like to play a game of poker wearing such a device if no one realized your ability?
nah

10. Do you think others would?
yes

Yikes, it’s the Ides of March! Sorry, Ceasar! Reminds me that it’s Dave’s Birthday yesterday.. I wonder how old he is now?

Sleepy day today – no walkies, too rainy. did some chores and took a midday nap upstairs. Lunch was pretzels and TV – last of alien in america – I’m kind of glad to see it go out on top, rather than fizzling.

We meandered downstairs, did some more chores, and then watched the pilot for  Castle (has potential, but suffered from "pilot-itis) and caught up with Ugly Betty and House.

Note – Dutch from the Shield Showing up all over the place – Burn notice, CSI and House, most recently – And this guy who was on House, CSI, and Psych all in the same week. (The in-laws do the CSI thing) – They must have good managers!

Supper was what we meant to have yesterday – spaghetti and meatballs – pasta was good, but the sauce was just ok – not worth $6… can get better or at least similar for less than half that at safeway.

We didn’t leave the house all day… rather a blessing.

Tasty Salad at lunch, with lots of work on either side of it.

Made a date with BHK to see the Pietasters in May! A little Ska never hurts! Also made plans to go get some pancakes with Duncan, J, and Sean this weekend!

Bloody Fun Day is a strategic arcade game where players control the Reaper as he plows his way through little critters. Every time Death sticks his scythe into one of the creatures, he gains points but loses health. Destroying red creatures will bring his life back up.

Each set of creatures killed leave behind eggs which need to be left alone to hatch into even more critters. Building up points also gives Death special abilities which can be activated in order to grab even more points. It’s all about bagging as many points as possible before you run out of life.

The game mechanics work really well and it’s a very nice concept. There’s a tutorial to get you going and a couple of game modes to choose from. Play it over at Kongregate. (via indiegames.com)
